A Dramatic Porch Renovation

Welcome to the 180th Metamorphosis Monday!

Greetings!  I hope you came through this scorcher of a weekend okay.  The temps reached 108 in Atlanta!  Going outside felt just like stepping into an oven.

Let’s distract ourselves from this unbelievably hot weather with a wonderful porch renovation.  Michael, author of several books including  A Teeny Bit of Trouble, blogs at Rattlebridge Farm.  When not writing, she has been renovating a wonderful home she bought recently.  I’ll be sharing the inside renovations sometime in the future but for today were focusing on the progress that’s been made with the front porch.

Here’s how the house looked originally.

Front Porch Renovation (2)

This is Michael’s inspiration home!  Beautiful!

Front Porch Renovation (1)

The existing brick porch felt heavy and overwhelmed the entrance.  It gave the entry a bit of a tunnel-like feel.   The old porch was removed and a new one got underway.

Front Porch Renovation (2)

The removal of the old porch also opened up the space above the front door, allowing room for a new window that brings lots of great light into the foyer.  Michael is trying out different mullions in the window, so the ones you see here will probably not remain.

The columns are being in added in the photo below.

A small railing/balcony has been added around the top.  The front porch is beginning to look a lot like the inspiration home.

Michael will be making a decision on the front door and trim color soon.

A Porch Renovation

Love the herringbone pattern of the brick porch floor.  That’s a new addition to the porch, as well.

A Porch Renovation

It won’t be long before the painting of the brick is complete.  You can see it has gotten underway in this photo of one side of the home.

This side has already been painted.  The color Michael has chosen is Sherwin Williams, Tennessee Limestone.    The white trim looks great with this color!  Just the right amount of contrast.

Painting brick

Here’s how the back looks painted.   The front of the home will be painted today or tomorrow.

Painting brick

Here’s a side-by-side comparison of the “Before and After.”   I really love the open, elegant feel of the new front porch.  Can’t wait to see it fully painted.  The inspiration home is stunning so I know it’s going to be wonderful!

I’ll keep you posted and will share more pics as this renovation continues.  Can’t wait to share the inside renovations, too!

  13. Hi Susan! I’m back! My Christmas break turned into a winter-into-spring break! 🙂 I love what he’s doing to the house! I’m not sure about the color of the front door – I’d say do red and see how it sits for a while then he can always re-paint it black. Easier to go from red to black than black to red. ?? As always, thanks for hosting! Nan

  29. -Brenda- (aka mrsben) says

Love, love the addition of the pillars. IMHO, it gives the home a Twelve Oaks charm. I envy Michael that she can even paint the bricks as in our climate to do so is very risky. (Snow belt region in Canada where painted brick is not recommended.) Thanks for sharing ladies and happy renos to Michael. 🙂 I am sure it is going to be just beautiful. -Brenda-

  30. What a great metamorphosis! Thanks for hosting Susan.

    Hugs,
    Susan and Bentley

  37. Hi Susan,
Thanks for hosting this week. I so love porches, the bigger the better. I wish they had blogging when I took the back patio of my stuccoed duplex and turned it into a porch for a country cottage! You couldn’t even see the stucco and with my bil helping, we even had a planked roof. LOL! I’m going to see if I can find a picture of it. It’s been over 20yrs ago so hopefully it hasn’t gotten lost in the many moves. Thanks for sharing.
