A Little Fall & Christmas Preview

Welcome to the 311th Tablescape Thursday!

I was working on a table to share this week, but the new screens arrived for the porch and by the time they were done installing them, it was too late in the day to finish the table and take photos. So I’ll share it next week.

In the meantime, I snapped a few pics when I was last in Pottery Barn. I always love to stop in to just see what they are doing for the upcoming holidays and fall season. The store near me is all torn up because it’s in the process of being expanded. So, they didn’t have as many displays of their new dishware as they normally would.

They did have one fall table setting put together.

Fall Autumn Table Setting

I wish I had thought to move the napkins over so we could see the salad plates. I’m pretty sure they were the same as those we see standing up on the table. I liked the clear, glass pumpkin.

Over on a sideboard, they had a funny Halloween display.

Check out the skeleton serving bowl. Imagine serving salad from that bowl! 🙂

The bat wine glasses cracked me up!  Do you see the bat wings spread out under each wine glass. Too funny!

How about a vulture leg martini or champagne glass? Or is that a bat leg?  Either way, they are a riot!

Switching gears or rather, switching holidays, remember the 4 Christmas tables I put together last Christmas with the Better Homes & Garden dishware? (Table below can be viewed here: Christmas Table Setting)

I have reason to believe that B H & G is bringing that dishware back again this Christmas!

Don’t quote me on that, but I’m pretty sure it will be in the stores again. I know many folks wanted to collect some but didn’t get a chance before it sold out. (Table below can be viewed here: Christmas Tablescape )

Last year Wal-Mart carried it and it was really affordable! I think the salad plates were $3 each if I’m remembering correctly, and the matching dinner plates (not the plaid one shown here) weren’t much more.

So, start checking Wally World as it gets a bit closer to Christmas if you were one of the folks who wanted this dishware but didn’t get it before it was gone. It came in 4 different patterns and they were all super cute!

Looking forward to all the beautiful tablescapes posted for this week’s Tablescape Thursday!

If you are participating in Tablescape Thursday, please be sure to add your permalink below, and not your general blog address. To get your permalink, click on your post name, then copy and paste the address showing in the address bar, into the “url” box when you link up.

You’ll need to include a link in your post back to the party in order to link up and participate. That’s so visitors to your blog will be able to find the party and the other Tablescape Thursday participants. Requiring a link back also prevents businesses from linking up to sell their products. (Yep, that really happens, unfortunately.)

If you would like to use the Tablescape Thursday logo button in your post, just copy and paste it to your computer and upload it to your post as you would any photo.

Please, don’t add your post name/blog name ALL IN CAPS…it tends to create big spaces between the rows of links.

  1. Susan, I’m over due a trip to Pottery Barn, thanks for the sneak peak! Thanks also for sharing your BH&G dish find at Walmart last year! I made a mad dash and was lucky to pick of set of 4 adorable salad plates. Wishing you a Happy Labor Day 🙂

  2. Hi Susan,
I love those dishes from Walmart……thanks for the info.

    Thanks also for hosting,
    Carolyn

  3. Linda Page says

I am so envious that you have a Pottery Barn close to you. I know I can shop online but there is nothing like seeing and touching stuff for real. Looking at it online just isn’t the same. Love the Halloween stuff. What a hoot. Ok, now I am getting in the mood for the holiday season. I am already designing cards for my Christmas Card Stamp-a-Stack. Love this time of year. Thanks for the great post.

  4. I always enjoy browsing through Pottery Barn’s holiday tables, Susan. I will have to watch out for those Christmas plates from Walmart……Christine

  5. As much as I like fall and seasonal decor, I can barely bear to think about it now. Summer is such a short season in Maine and I want to hang on to every minute before moving on.

    • I so agree, Linda! I was thinking today how much I love spring and summer and how winter seems to last forever. I start dreading it before fall has even started. I’m just not a cold weather person. That’s a bad attitude on my part, I guess. I can’t stop it so I guess I better try to think of what I do like about it, which isn’t a lot. lol

  6. Well, now I’m nervous! The holidays are coming up and I haven’t given the first thought to them! I sure would love to have those PB pumpkin plates, they would be great from Sept to Dec…thanks for the party, the preview and gentle reminder that summer is almost over 🙁

  7. The fall PB table is stunning! Your Christmas tablescape last year w/the BH&G salad plates had me running from store to store not only to buy for myself, but as gifts for my sisters! The pattern is oh-so-classic and the price, far better than you’ll ever find at PB!

    • You are soooo right! The quality was so nice…and that price was unbelievable! I love the BH & G china Wally World carries for all the holidays each year. Glad you got some last year!

  8. Susan,

Your Pier One does super cute tablescapes, and I want those little pumpkin plates. So cute! While I am not much on Halloween, I have to admit those skeleton serving pieces are a hoot. They would be fun for an orthopedic doctor! We have one in the family.

I have been MIA for what seems like eternity, but I have good reasons. But I thought I had best jump back in the blogging pool before summer was gone. As I told Pat earlier,, gonna see how my hand holds up to my rigorous blogging. I can’t just say a word or two. I’m Southern! 😉

Thanks for hosting, but I can’t believe you tempted me with yet more cute Christmas dishes. Better Homes rocked it with these. So cute! They do nice things.

    xo

  9. Whoa Susan, that Halloween sideboard is pretty bizarre!! 😀 The Thanksgiving table, however, is very pretty. I’m so glad you told us about the BH & G Christmas plates, because I thought yours were so pretty last year! They have such charming scenes, and I love how nature is woven into each one with greenery and animals. I might have to start looking at our WalMart soon. 😉

Thank you for hosting the party and have a great day!

    Hugs,

    Denise

  10. Given I’m a Fall/Christmas FREAK, this post made me explode. SOOO much awesome!!! I’m excited! 🙂

  11. Susan, When I added my link my photo didn’t show up on your blog. I tried to redo it but the link area wouldn’t allow it. I haven’t posted for many months because of computer issues and this was my attempt at a first post. Any suggestions?

    Carolyn

  12. just took out one of the WalMart plates from last year to remind myself to keep checking my local store. My best find was the large tray.

    • Anne, I sure hope it does come in. I was reading a blog recently and that blogger had actually visited Better Homes and Gardens. She showed some pics of some items they had on display and said it was a preview of what would be available for the upcoming season…and one of the things I just caught a glimpse of was our fave Christmas china. So, let’s hope that was for real! I know a lot of folks wanted it last year but the stores sold out quickly.

  13. Love those darling BH&G salad plates! They are really sweet. I don’t shop at Walmart very often, but from time to time have found some really fun things there at a great price. I think it’s time for me to head back. Thank you for the party and I hope you have a lovely Labor Day weekend!

    Big Texas Hugs,
    Susan and Bentley

  14. I have Pfaltzgraff Winterberry salad plates and serving pieces but never got around to getting enough dinner plates. Those BHG plaid dinner plates would be a cute complement to freshen my set up a bit. Thanks for sharing!

    • Hi Jana, unfortunately the plaid ones are from another set. I think they were from Pottery Barn if I’m remembering correctly now. The dinner plate that’s part of the B H & G set is a similar pattern to the salad plate. Hopefully someone will make plaid dinner plates again this year, too!

  15. I need to improve in the Tablescape arena. You inspire me!

  16. I look forward to PB’s decorating every year. Thanks for the heads up about the BHG plates, too. I was too late last year and I’d love to get a few plates!

  17. Susan Jones says

Ooooohhhh just saw your response to Anne about the BH&G plates. I was wondering how you had heard they were going to be out again! PLEASE let us know as soon as you start seeing them! I tried getting them last year but could not ever find the ones with the tree on them to complete my collection. Will go ahead and start checking the Walmarts around me! Thanks so much for the heads up!!

  18. Those skeletons are so funny! I’m going to have to stalk WM for those plates. I know you’re glad to get everything finished on the porch. It’s always a little stressful to have people working at your house all of the time. Thank you for hosting the linky. laurie

  19. I saw those Pottery Barn dishes yesterday. I love them too!!

  20. I love going into a PB store. I have to travel quite a distance but I always try to get in there and see the merchandise in person. I already got those pumpkin plates because of a discount a few weeks back. I noticed this year there is more emphasis on green with the orange in the stores. That would be pretty cool if BH&G brought back the dishes. It’s nice to know some companies listen to the public!

  21. There’s a theme going here – both your porch and PB have been undergoing freshening up (aka torn up!). I am so glad to hear the Christmas dishes are coming back, I bought a few last year and would love more. I’ll be watching for them – thanks for the heads up!

  22. PB sure does it well. I love their fall table! Thanks for sharing. We have a nice PB in the mall near me but I only shop online so I need to get to those sites and do some planning and drooling!

LOVED your pretty winterscape with the bunny plates – so good to know they may be available again. I would love to get some. That table of yours was/is awesome.

    Thanks for hosting! Hugs!

  23. Thanks for hosting – I’m loving the pottery barn table! Hope you stay cool and enjoy the Labor Day weekend – Jennifer

  24. Thank you so much Susan. BTW, LOVED your post, now I think I may head over to PB and purchase some of those salad plates. They are calling my name.

    Carolyn

  25. Blogger is making me crazy the past 3 days, UGH! It won’t let me link a picture from the table….again! Thanks for hosting and I am glad to hear they may have those plates again. I only got a few. Have a great weekend. XO

  26. Well now you have done it Susan!! Here I was blithely enjoying Summer and you bring out my worst holiday of the year!! No, it was not bat legs under that glass, it was my nemesis, that horrible eight legged creature, from whom I shrink each year!! I do love the Christmas plates though!!

  27. Wonderful Fall tablescape Susan…but!, I’m not ready for Halloween and worst C’mas, although your table is stunning and inspiring!
Thank you so much for hosting sweet lady.
Have a great summer rest of the week and weekend too!
    FABBY

  28. Oh, goodness, I had better be off to Pottery Barn! I had just looked on their website last week for Halloween and they had nothing up yet! Fun, fun, fun!

  29. SharonFromMichigan says

The little witch hats on the wine bottles are adorable. I bet those would be easy to make from black felt. I visited my local Homegoods earlier this week and they have my turkey Thanksgiving dishes again this year. I purchased my dishes closer to Thanksgiving last year and I thought all they had were the dinner dishes, but this year they have coffee cups, bowls and desert plates. I wonder if the stores are bringing back the popular items again this season?

  30. We don’t have a Pottery Barn nearby, so I really love the peek at that first table. Gorgeous! As for the heads-up about the BH&G plates… I may have to take a break from downsizing if I see those! (Enjoy your new screens!)

  31. After spending the last 2 hours in the 98 degree heat outside and feeling like I am going to pass out from the heat, I was so excited to see some Fall! Last year recently after you posted a tablescape with the BH&G plates one of the Home Inspectors I use brought me a Christmas gift of cookies wrapped up so pretty on a BH&G plate! I was more excited for the plate! Now, I will check often at Wally World to get some more, they are just so cute!

  32. Nice table setting. Like how green is dominant over orange. Do you know if that witch’s hat is just sitting on the wine bottle in the background, or is it actual wine stopper?
And love the layered runner, especially for autumn and winter. Am I the last to know about doing this?
Have not seen the large bunny in awhile. He looks right at home with poinsettias. Would not have thought to use him other than Easter, and I remember you did in other times, and quite well.

    • Mia, it was just the hat…no stopper. I thought those were so cute. They also had little Dracula capes that were wine bottle decorations.
lol, I know…I didn’t expect to use Mr. Bunny at Christmas either. I got the idea from the cute bunny on the BH&G plates. I ended up using him in 4 tables last year. 🙂

  33. Thanks for hosting Susan. Have a great weekend!

  34. Susan, Thanks for the PB preview and tip about the Bhg dishes. Loved the stroll through some of your back posts using Mr. Bunny for different seasons and how cleverly you wove the story to the pic of the last plate scene with a bunny no less!

Thanks for hosting the party. Hope the screen installation went well.

  35. Well I was lucky to score some last year, but will keep my eyes open for a few back-ups in case of accidents. They are so beautiful and again, I firmly believe YOU are responsible for their huge popularity. 🙂

    • lol You may be right, Debbie. 🙂 It’s not often something so cute is also sooo affordable! I still love them as much this year as I did last year. They are like a Currier and Ives painting.

  36. Love all of these and hope you are right about the BHG dishes. Love all those Pottery Barn pumpkin plates.

  37. Thank you for allowing me to link. I’ve enjoyed your beautiful site for so long and you have inspired me to start photographing my own tables.

  38. pam ~ crumpety cottage says

This is my favorite time of year, going in to “The Holidays.” 😀 Hee. But I must admit, this is probably the first summer since I was a school kid that I am not anxious to see come to an end. Usually, I am miserable due to the heat and humidity, but now that we have a pool, I want it to last as long as possible, lol. Still, it’s so much fun to get a ‘sneak peek’ at what is ahead.

Susan, I’m so glad you mentioned those B & H plates. You know, I was over browsing around on ebay and someone has 4 of those plates up with a STARTING bid at $59.95 with another $13.00 for shipping. Errrggh!! Greed makes me so mad. You said they were $3.00 apiece and this person wants $15 + a piece. It makes me want to pinch them.

Anyway, thanks for the fun trip. My closest Pottery Barn is full of snooty workers so I hardly ever go there. Might do a bit of window shopping next time I’m at the mall though. Take care.

  39. Thanks for the pics of what’s new at Pottery Barn! I don’t have one close to us, so don’t get to see what’s there. I used to get a catalog, but not anymore 🙁

    Thanks for hosting!

    Katherine

  40. Susan, thanks for a taste of what Pottery Barn is offering. I try to only visit twice a year (LOL), and will be going Columbus Day weekend when family visits. Thanks also for sharing your BH&G dish find at Walmart last year. I’ll be on the lookout this year since I missed out last year.

  41. Linda Mazzei says

Hi Susan, I love those BHG plates last year. I bought, I think, 4 of each. I searched high and low last year for plaid plates, with no luck. This month (in August, can you believe) I found 4 plaid dinner plates at Cracker Barrel, they are perfect for the BHG salad plates, they are thick and have a scalloped edge like the BHG plates for $9.99. On the hunt for 4 more, I know I will use them for years to come. I have be hunting 3 years for 2 big deer to go on the top of my bookcase/entertainment center in the family room. I found some at Tuesday Morning a little more than what I wanted to pay, but again I will use them for years. Thanks for the reminder of that lovely table, I had so much fun recreating it! Looking forward to your next tablescape.

    • Oooh, Linda…I’m checking Cracker Barrel tomorrow! One can never have too many plaid plates! 🙂 Glad you found your deer! I do that…get something in my mind and then spend a long time finding it. Worth it once you do, though. 🙂 Thanks, Linda! XO

  42. Linda Louise S. says

    Hi Susan,

I love the Better Homes and Garden holiday dishware but my Walmart doesn’t carry it. I even tried going on their website but no luck. Any ideas?

    • Linda, they had it around Christmastime last year and it all sold out. I’m not sure when they start getting Christmas stuff in, but it probably won’t be too much longer. I hope they do have it again this year!

      • Linda Louise S. says

Good news. They recently renovated my Walmart and now it seems they are carrying the holiday dishes. Yesterday I purchased the squirrel salt and pepper shakers. So cute. Now I am on the lookout for the Christmas dishes.
Guess I’ll have to go there every week just to make sure I don’t miss them. On the hunt!!!

  43. I will have to make a note to go to “Wally-World” to check on their Christmas plates this year!….

  44. Christina McCall says

Susan, I did get the large BH&G platter and never thought about the plates until I became in love with your blogs. Now I am going to be hitting the Walmart definitely for some fall and holiday ideas. First on my list is to make a wreath for every window. Hobby Lobby has them out and if you get one or two every week using a 40% off coupon is definitely the way to go. Dollar Tree has the red bows. I think from all of the comments I read last year I need to go to Lowes for the light in the center of the wreath??? Also a timer??? Anyway let me know via my e-mail. I really wanted to ask you where you got those plaid plates and specifically the wicker chargers. Please let me know and keep your awesome ideas coming. Thanks 🙂

    • Christina, that sounds like a good way to collect the wreaths. It’s been so long since I purchased mine, I’m not sure I remember where I bought them. I know I found the bows already made at Michaels. Be sure and get the bows that are for outdoor use and stand up to weather. They last forever if you get that kind. I remember some folks recommended JoAnns for the window candles…I remember seeing them in Walmart, too. The ones that run on battery are usually a little dimmer than the electric but if you have a lot of windows, it’s a paint to have to plug them all in at night. They may make electric ones that are light sensitive and come on when it’s dark. I know you can find timers at Walmart, HomeDepot and Lowes. I found the plaid plates at Pottery Barn a few years back. I’m not sure if they will have them this year. Hopefully someone will have plaid plates this year. I’m pretty crazy about plaid plates…love plaid anything! 🙂
Regarding the chargers, do you mean the ones visible in this post under the plaid plates. Those are actually ceramic, although they kind of have that wicker look since they are pierced. Those came from Horchow in February 2008 before I ever started blogging. I’ve never seen them on their site again, but I rarely visit it. If you google “Pierced Charger Plates” you may find something very similar available somewhere else.
Hope that info helps. Your house is going to be gorgeous this Christmas!

    • Christina, I just realized, you may talking about the brown woven chargers higher up in this post. Those came from Pier 1. They occasionally put them on sale. I think they still carry them. I waited until they were on sale since they can be a little pricey. Seems like I’ve seen something very similar in Walmart, too…so check there as well.

  45. Hmmmm….seems to me that I never read about “big company” set designers…what these folks do to entice (me) is really intriguing. Works many times! 🙂 franki
