A Paint Panic Attack

Update: Home Depot has changed the paint formulas again so ignore the formula further down in this post: You’ll find the correct formulas in this post now:  My Fave Yellow Paint Colors: Duron Sugar Cookie & Duron Tea Biscuit

Does this ever happen to you? You finally decide on a paint color, go to the paint store, buy the paint, come home, start painting and then, PANIC! It happens to me every. single. time. When the paint first goes up, it never, ever looks right. As I began painting on Friday, I kept reminding myself of this as I painted and panicked.

After much deliberation and brainstorming of all the possible colors in the rainbow I could paint the walls of my home office, I settled on a color that’s been my favorite since I first came across it in the home of a friend 15 years ago: Duron, Sugar Cookie.

Here’s how it looked when I began cutting it in. Awful, isn’t it? As I was painting I alternated between thinking the guy at Home Depot who mixed it must have really goofed and reminding myself that each time I paint, I always think it looks terrible and too dark in the beginning. Even Max appears to be saying, “WHAT is this woman thinking?”

Below is how Sugar Cookie is supposed to look. Does the pic above look anything like the entry below? Scary.

Or, like this bedroom? Nope.

Yep, panic time. Just look at how dark it looks against the white primer. Yikes!

Once the “cutting in” part was done and I began rolling on the paint, I began to feel a little better.

I applied a second coat of paint this morning and here’s how it looked late this afternoon after it was completely dry. Much, much better.

I have a long, sordid history with yellow paint. Twenty years ago when we bought this house, we had been “trying out houses” for quite a while. That was the term our son who was seven at the time, dubbed our weekend house-hunting excursions. During the “trying out” phase, we decided when we finally settled into a new home, we would paint the walls a soft yellow.

After buying this house and moving in, we could never find the right shade of yellow. All the samples we brought home looked limey once they were tested on the wall. We ended up settling on a really soft shade of pink for the walls. I know that sounds weird but it was very subtle and looked really pretty.

Several years later I met a friend who was married to a man who was a professional football coach. They tended to move a good bit with his career and she never knew when they might have to move again. She had discovered over the years that Sugar Cookie worked in any house and always went well with the fabrics/colors she always chose to decorate with each time they moved.

Our decorating styles were very similar. When I entered her home, it was love at first sight. I loved the color of her walls so I knew I had finally found my yellow paint. She told me Sugar Cookie would work with any fabric color (red, green, blue etc) and it looked great with antiques, new furniture, painted furniture…really anything. Over the years I’ve definitely found this to be true.

So, the walls are finally painted. Now I’m just waiting to hear if I will be getting the chandelier I found on eBay or if the original buyer will still be getting it. It’s a long story, one I’ll share soon.   Update:  You’ll find the post about the chandelier I hoped to get, HERE.

Once I have a light fixture, I will have it and the crown molding installed. The same person will be installing both so I need to wait until I have the fixture.

Remember when the walls looked like this?

And this? I learned a new skill creating this home office…the art of repairing walls damaged by wallpaper removal. Wallboard joint compound is good stuff.  Messy, but good.

Here’s the paint formula in case you’re interested in having some mixed up.  The Home Depot guy printed this out for me so I’d always have the actual formula. He said all they need in order to mix it is this bar code. So I guess you could just print out this picture and take it to any Home Depot. Oh, for some crazy reason, in their computer it is listed as Duron, Sugar Cook. So he looked it up on their little paint fan-deck thingy to verify that Sugar Cook is really Sugar Cookie.

September 23, 2012 Update:  Apparently, Home Depot changes the formula numbers in their system every so often.  Boo, hiss!  So, I’ve been told the above formula doesn’t work anymore to mix Sugar Cookie.  I stopped by Home Depot today and they pulled out the old fan deck they saved and “color-matched” the sugar cookie chip on the fan deck to come up with the current formula/label you would need to present to have Sugar Cookie mixed up at Home Depot.   It’s the label shown below.  Thank goodness the Home Depot near my home keeps their old fan decks.  I hope they do that forever so this “Sugar Cookie” obsessed woman can always get her fave paint.

We’ve come a long way.  Next up…painting the trim and the closet. I’m so ready to get the furniture back against the wall and in position as it really goes. We’re getting closer, finally getting closer now.

  4. LindaSonia says

That color is really pretty. We don't have Duron paint where I live in the Midwest. Would you consider sending me a paint chip sample if I sent you a self-addressed envelope? email me at [email protected]

  5. So grateful for the tip on yellow paint. I'm not a Duron fan but I'll go to HD and get Sugar Cookie based on your recommendation. I have a lovely porch that I just couldn't seem to make "work" until my "duh" moment…the whole bloody thing was boring brown! Ugh. I'm going with this yellow and crisp white trim. Thanks again for an excellent blog.

  6. What a gorgeous color! I think it's going to look fabulous when it's all completed. I can't wait to see it. Every room in your house is totally amazing!! You never cease to inspire me. 🙂

  7. Pine Tree Home says

I am a huge fan of yellow and have used it in most of the rooms of my home. I decided to switch things up a bit few years back when we remodeled and picked a beige color that has yellow undertones. Something about that yellow that = smile. Your room is looking lovely.

  8. Kathy's Red Door Welcome says

Thank you for sharing! Your room looks great!

  11. Miss Char says

Susan, I feel your pain. Several years ago I remember rolling on the first coat of Martha Stewart yellow paint ( I can't remember the name of it) in a guest room closet and calling my girl friend to tell her the color was awful and I'd use the gallon for a primer and go back and try another yellow. Well after two coats on the whole room I decided I liked it after all. It's still there.

I can't wait to see the room finished I'm in love with your PB office already.

  12. The Mac's House says

Yeah! Thanks you just helped solve a paint color problem for me. Deciding on a yellow has been the toughest decision for me. I love the looks of this one.

    Thanks! Great job!

  13. Kathy @ Creative Home Expressions says

Isn't it funny when that happens? Then when you did the rest of the wall, it didn't look as dark. I guess it is seeing it against the white primer. It looks like a great color, too, Susan!

  14. On Crooked Creek says

    Susan,
Yes, dear, I go through that same panic everytime we paint! What is it??? Luckily…"Mr. Ed" is a very patient man! Your Sugar cookie paint goes very well with MAX, too! HA! You have done an amazing job. I'm so thrilled you're getting close to the part where you can begin to enjoy the fruits of your labors!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  15. Holly @ Roller Coaster Life says

Yikes I would have been freaking out too it looks much darker! But it looks beautiful finished! What a nice color!!

And I LOOOVE that green damask print chair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want it!

  16. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

I just bought that at Pier 1 about a month ago…so they probably still have them. 🙂

  17. Cote de Texas says

i just went through this with a client and she would NOT believe me when I said the sample just looked weird next to the primer. she changed colors and now her room is so white instead of soft gray. her loss.

your color looks beautiful. glad you stuck with it. i know it's hard to believe when you see it next to the primer, but it really came out beautiful so soft!!

  18. This has happened to me to many times- even had a few palpitations when I've seen them mix up the paint and what colors go into the mix the room looks very nice

  19. Nancy Holte says

Wow, Susan! It looks great! Glad to hear about the color. Yellow is my favorite color for walls and it's so hard to get just the right shade. Thanks for sharing!

  20. southerninspiration says

I'm hardly ever drawn to yellow, but that one is very nice!! Good job!
    Suzanne

  21. The Sewing Loft says

Oh I know exactly how you feel when you panic about paint color. I am still trying to chooose color for my downstairs, and every time I choose a color chip, I go look again in a few days and pick something a little different! It is driving me nuts. I have not even gotten past the color samples. Your yellow is beautiful, everything will be just fine. 🙂 Thanks for sharing.

    Barb

  22. Yep!!! It happens to me every time, in fact I am going through it right now. LOL!!! It's so nice to know I am not the only one that goes through this too!
I love the way your room turned out the colour is beautiful!!!
    oxo

  23. Smocking with Gwen says

    Susan,
Love Sugar Cookies….oh, and the paint too! I've been thinking of using creamy yellow as a neutral in my basement sewing room just to make it brighter! Love it! I've always loved yellow but years ago I read that if you prefer yellow, you are a "nervous" person. So, I steered away from it…now I know better! Poppycock!

  24. Such a pretty soft colour. I will have to keep this colour in mind 🙂

  25. I am not a yellow girl, except in flowers, but do like this one, very soft and inviting. I have only one thing that is yellow, a picture with a yellow frame that was a gift, and I do love it.
Congrats on getting your office painted.
    Gail

  26. dale's dreams says

What a lovely shade and it's looking so good. I'm sure you will be quite pleased when it is all finished. 🙂

  27. Love it!!!

  28. Susan, the dreaded yellow stories. Most people have a hard time with that color and I have found you are either a yellow girl or you are not. I am just like you, I am married to the yellows I live with in my home. I have always used yellow and probably always will, but it has to be on the gold or butter side for me and I can tell that your sugar cookie is in that family. It looks wonderful!!! Love it,Kathysue

  29. I love the walls, Susan. Sugar Cookie is good to eat and to look at!
    Be a sweetie,
    shelia 😉

  30. I have sugar cookie in my very bright entry way!! Love it!

  31. Hi Susan…I LOVE the "sugar cookie" walls. Love that shade. We have a beautiful shade of yellow in our kitchen, too, called "morning sunshine." I love that, too. GRRRRREAT job! Susan

  32. claudia b says

I love that color! Looks very similar to what I have in my living room. It's very bright and pretty – but yeah when we first rolled it on I was freaking out, too!

  33. What a great color! I, too have had trouble with yellow paint. I will definately try this the next time I need paint.
I love your blog, it is the frist thing I open when I go on my computer daily. Thanks for sharing

  34. Wow, it looks fantastic, Susan. What a cheerful place to work. Love the color. ~ sarah

  35. Chandeen @ Designed by Chance says

I love your office, it is almost exactly how i would do mine. Can't wait to see it all done.

  36. Love the colour. Love the chair. Can't buy it here in Canada. Boohoo. Can't wait to see this room done. Now I need to start on my office. You have given me inspiration.

  37. If you don't have Duron paint, Benjamin Moore's Cornsilk is pretty close. That's the color of the walls in our house, and they are very close to Susan's Sugar Cookie walls which I know well.

  38. Momma Button says

I love this color!! I think that I've finally found the color that I want to paint my kitchen. BTW, love the office and can't wait to see it finished. I'm so excited for you.

  39. Pam @ Our Adventures in Home Improvement says

It looks absolutely beautiful Susan! I love the color and love how it looks with your new furniture and your beautiful new floors. Thanks for posting the information on it. I will print that out and take it to Depot when I'm ready to repaint.

    Thanks for sharing!
    Pam

  40. It looks lovely Susan. I have a similar yellow in my bedroom, have used it in two houses.
    You are almost there!!

  41. Anonymous says

    Susan,

Oh – can I relate. Every single paint I choose – I have learned to go with the lightest on the sample strip. Is Sugar Cookie also in your kitchen. Love it!

    Betsy

  42. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

Betsy: Yep, that's Sugar Cookie in the kitchen, too. Good eye!

  43. Susan, your office looks fabulous and the yellow walls are beautiful. I had my share of nightmares when I was trying to paint a guest room a pale yellow. OMG, I don't know how many samples I tried until finally the guy at BM store took pity on me and recommended a color called Rich Creme, which is a very pale yellow. I could tell by his expression when he recommended it to me he had a lot of experience with people having trouble finding that perfect yellow. I now have that color in the great room, hall, laundry and pantry and somtimes wish I had put it throughout the house, but then I might have become bored with the same color in all the rooms. It's a wonderfully soothing color like your Sugar Cookie color.

  44. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

Patsy, Thanks! Rich Creame sounds like a wonderful color. Just the name sounds delicious.

  45. Graceful Moments says

Duron Sugar Cookie is one of my all time favorites as well! I used it as a base coat for several faux finish wall in the 90s, a cabinet a few years ago and have been thinking of using it for my master bath redo.

Your office is looking so much better now that the walls are painted. Your patience and planning are paying off and are an inspiration to me!!!

  46. Hello Susan,
yes, I know this panic attacs very well when painting a room. But in the end your room looks perfect. When I am painting, the wet color always looks very different to the dry one. And eaven when the colors turs out the very same, the look can be different. The illumination can change the look as much as the reflection from the other walls. So it makes a big difference to have a small or a big room in that color. And at the end the floor and the furniture influences the perception.
But I am sure, because your kittycat was watching every step, there could not happen a desaster. 🙂

    Best greetings, Johanna

  47. Dana @ Cooking At Cafe D says

    Wow, nice transformation!

And, yes, I was with Max – wondering if I would have even continued after cutting in. So many times I've tried paint only to find it either wasn't bold enough. Or, I had gone too dark. (My "strawberry ice cream" bedroom years ago – when I was shooting for "a light hint of pink blush" is an excellent example.

Now, I grab 2 or 9 paint chip samples FOE EACH COLOR I'm considering, cut them up, tape them together on the back, and hang them in the room. Then one by one I pull them off during different times of day – if I hate them. "This one looks like mud during the day – that would drive me batty on the weekends" – into the trash it goes.

When I'm left with a paint color I love – I buy it. And, I have a new rule for myself. NEVER just buy a color in the store. I NEED to go through the above process. Otherwise, I'll end up re-painting my kitchen like I did recently (thank you to my husband for encouraging my to re-paint it when I could tell I wasn't happy.) Or, I'll end up living with a "Strawberry Ice Cream" bedroom – like I did for…10 years. Ack!

  48. The Toll House Cookie says

I've had a similar sordid history with yellow. I wanted my kitchen to be that primitive gold color and when I thought I found the color swatch that would bring me that color, I painted my entire 25 X 12 kitchen in this horrid mango gold. I was so disappointed and people would be horrified that my kitchen was so bright and bold, but I just sucked it up and kept it (never sharing how much I hated it as well!!!). Last year I finally went back to the paint store–explained my issues to the designer and she picked colors for me….not in the yellow, but more neutral family. Now when walking into my kitchen, everyone raves about the color scheme….and I'm pleased that it's so neutral that even I can be happy with it. I do like your Sugar Cookie color, though–wish I had this post to go by 5 years ago!!! 😉

  49. Things That Inspire says

I am going through the paint angst (I have been to the paint store 10 times over the past week) – so I know how you feel! I am selecting colors for the brick and trim on the exterior of my house, and it is so important to get it right. It is amazing how differently a color dries from the first application!

Sugar cookie looks wonderful in your room. Thanks for giving us a behind the scenes look at the process!

  50. Luncheons at the Junction says

Susan, I feel your pain. I too wanted a soft yellow that could be used throughout my home and it took many tries before I finally found one. Mine is Bavarian Creme. Love how this office space is evolving. Can't wait to see the chandy! I'm sure it will be a perfect addition.

  51. ⚜ ↁℯℬℬᴵℰ⚜ says

Love the color Susan. I am a big yellow fan anyhow, this is soft and very pretty. Can't wait till it all comes together.

  52. Love this color, your office is really coming along. I love the soft yellow with the white trim. I hate that first jolt when you apply a new paint color, because it never looks right. Just redid Cait's old room, and I found the perfect blue. When I changed to fluorescent light bulbs in an attempt to be more earth conscious, the walls turned lavender! Yikes! So back to old fashioned bulbs for that room, I'll just recycle more LOL Kat

  53. Edie Marie's Attic says

Oh THANK YOU Susan!! We've been searching for the perfect paint color to paint our condo and I think this is it!! We had a soft yellow family room in our family home that we moved from and we loved it. I can see this shade of "yellow" in all of our rooms!! And thank you to your friend for the original discovery too. You've made me a happy camper today girl!!

    many hugs, Sherry

PS Your room looks fabulous and I can hardly wait to see the evolution of it!

  54. I share your paint panic, as it has happened to me on many occasions! When I painted my office, I actually REPAINTED it a different color because I just wasn't feelin' it. Yellows can be tricky though, so I think your panic was warranted. 😉 Love how it came out though!!

  55. Your new office looks absolutely devine. Love the color of the walls. Good job.
    Linda

  56. Martina @ Northern Nesting says

Oh Susan I LOVE the color you chose, your room looks so bright!! And I know I told you before but I LOVE that new chair you bought at Pier 1!! The room looks great already I can't wait to see the finishing touches! Martina

  57. You've come a LONG WAY!! It looks so fresh and wonderful! Nice going! franki

  58. laxsupermom says

Love the color! You're right yellow can be scary. I pored over swatches and picked the perfect creamy buttery yellow to paint my kitchen walls, had it mixed up, and began painting. The walls were screamingly bright eye-bleed yellow. I thought maybe it was just the contrast with the primer, so I continued to paint. 3 walls later, and my retinas were close to detaching. Not good. I went back to the paint counter, and asked the guy for help. He gave me the perfect creamy, buttery yellow. So much better. Looks like yours was a home run the first time. Thanks for sharing.

  59. Boy I know exactly what you mean about that panic feeling! It's happened to me several times! You do have to finish it before you really know. I love how it turned out. I have a color that feels real similar to that by Pratt & Lambert called Italian Straw. I hope you get your chandelier!

  60. Shalon of Love, Shalon says

Forgive me if this was already mentioned. I heard once from an interior designer the trick to any yellow you use is to have them mix a little black paint with it. I have no idea how this helps and I have no idea if this works. Good job on the painting.

  61. I love the color! It feels comfy.

  62. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who panics when I paint. I have never painted and NOT freaked out afterward. Your sugar cook(ie) sure calmed down after it dried. Looks like a great color. Your in the home stretch now.

  63. Your room is really looking good. I've been going through that paint panic for the last four months! I'm redoing my house room by room to fit me now. After my husband died I painted everything dark colors. Too depressing. Now my colors are Canyon Cloud, Full Moon and Utah Sky. My house is bright and welcoming and I've fallen in love with it all over again.

Im also redoing my office now and getting rid of that horrid Sugar Maple color that was in there.

Anyway, I am really looking forward to seeing your office finished. You have great taste and style! Jo

  64. I have copied your paint color info to my computer desktop. I know I will want to use it. Gorgeous and yes it really didn't look right when you first started. I was sure you were going to tell a tale of retuning it to the store.

  65. tammylovesdishes says

Susan, your room is really coming along. I can't wait for the final reveal!
Thank you so much for sharing the paint color and specifics. I am one who gets paralyzed with the fear of decision and thus just put off making any changes. Armed with this beautiful color, I feel I can make a step forward in bringing my very retro house into this century!
    Tammy

  66. It looks BEAUTIFUL, Susan! That's the color that was in my DD's new home in Hilton Head & I loved it!!! My own colors are similar but not quite as pretty as yours.

You sure are working hard on this room. I can't wait for it to be finished so you can enjoy it.

    Hugs,
    Rett

  67. That is a beautiful color. I may just be having some Sugar Cookie in my new house.

And I always always always feel that way when I first start to paint a room! That sinking feeling of, oh no, this is the wrong color!!

  69. I love the yellow! It's a beautiful color.

    Dee

  70. Oh I do love the color of your room!

  71. Susan, I sympathize completely and am sharing that with Jeff, my husband. He calls me 3Try-Di (Dianna) because EVERYTIME no matter how careful, it takes me 3 times :(.Yellow, also my fave, but tough to get right..seems we hope for a butter cream and never find it. That first pic looks like Honey Dijon, not Sugar Cookie! In the end , your paint color is a success. Love your inspirational Blog. You have been my biggest inspiration to blog. One day I will drive down to your gorgeous State and have breakfast on that fabulous porch that started this addiction for me. xo Sunny109

  72. Susan, a funny thing happened as I scrolled down the page. I recognized something in one of your pics and realized I have that same exact blanket (the one you're using to drape over the furniture). I have no idea where I got it; I think it belonged to my grandmother. What are the chances?

  73. That sugar cookie sure is a feel good kind of a color. It would be hard to be depressed in such a bright, airy room, wouldn't it? I just love the way your room is evolving and can't wait to see it in its finished state.

  74. Sunny Simple Life says

Oh I have had one of these attacks. But I love your rooster post. Love it!!

  75. Barb@curlywillowdiy says

Oh good, you've saved me a lot of time and energy! I'm going straight for the Sugar Cookie next time I need this soft yellow color. Thanks!

  76. The Kramer Angle says

You're right, yellow is really hard to get right! Thanks for the Sugar Cookie tip, now, where's a cup of tea to go with that?

Boy that was dorky, wasn't it? ha, ha!

  77. A Garden of Threads says

    Cheers

  79. Handy Man, Crafty Woman says

Oh yes, paint panic. I know it well!!! You'd think that after 3 houses, I'd know better, but I still panic!

LOVE that color! I painted one of our rooms a light yellow, and it's an ok yellow, but I think it's too yellow-y. I like this better. But now I'd have to convince hubby to repaint it (it's a pain, since the room has cathedral ceilings!!) lol

Duron, is that the paint brand?

  80. Ever - The red house by the lake says

    Definitely know that feeling. 😉

And I think I am in love with your cat. He is just adorable (and reminds me so much of my cat that I lost).

  81. FABBY'S LIVING says

Yeah…to get the right color is always like that, but! that is a beautiful yellow, I have something very similar in my house and it's so lovely, specially when the sun hits the walls coming from the window. Love that color! Very nice.
    FABBY

  82. Designs By Pinky says

I am so late seeing this cause we had a VERY busy weekend! I love this color, it looks beautiful! Can't wait to see the office all done….and I am sure you can't either!:) XO, Pinky

  83. Love the color…great choice….
Were your professional coach friends either Skip & Virginia Hall or Jerry & Sharon Rhome?
It's a small world, you never know.

  84. Love the color choice!!

Were your professional coach friends either Skip & Virginia Hall or Jerry & Sharon Rhome?

  85. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

KLW, nope, wasn't either of those. 🙂

  86. I'm getting ready to scrape the popcorn texture off the rest of the ceilings in my house, and then repaint at least half the house. I like my yellow walls, but I was intrigued by your yellow. So after reading this, I went straight to Home Depot to see the swatch in the Duron paint fan thingie. But they didn't have it indexed under "Sugar Cookie" or "Sugar Cook". Do you by chance know which Duron paint fan they looked in? Each fan has a different name.
(I was at the Marietta HD on Shallowford and Sandy Plains.)

  87. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

    AD,
Email me at [email protected] and I'll give you all the info on where I bought my paint. I tried hitting reply but I don't think you have an email associated with your blog since it didn't pop up.
    Susan

  88. Just beautiful. I have a friend that painted a little, outdated lake cottage in Sugar Cookie years ago. It was just perfect to brighten it up. Good to see that it's still around in case I ever get back to my yellow phase!

  89. OMG that is the absolutely perfect yellow that I have been looking for for years! I can't thank you enough for posting this… I am in yellow heaven!
    Hugs,
    Beth P

  90. this is gorgeous! thanks for sharing the color. i came upon your blog & much say i LOVE your style. this room is just beyond… and your cat – he is so lovely. love the green printed chair too! awesome.

  91. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Thanks so much! Appreciate those sweet words.

  92. I have Duron TEA BISCUIT on my livingroom and dining room walls. these rooms are separated by an entry foyer. I am looking for a paint color for my foyer. Any suggestions?

  93. Tamra Migonis says

I loved seeing the process of the transformation! Thank you for sharing it with us. Totally unrelated to the paint color, you have a blanket in your pics covering some of your belongings. I had that very same blanket as a little girl and I totally adored it! May I be so bold as to ask where you got it? I’d do just about anything to have my old blanky friend again! I love all that you share!

    • Tamra, I don’t remember now where I bought it because it was so many years ago, probably 18-20 years ago. I’d be happy to send it to you. It’s been through the wash many times of the years so it’s a little nubby…the way blankets get after several washings, but you are welcome to it. Just email me at betweennapsontheporchatgmaildotcom and I’ll put it in the mail to you. I know how that can be, especially with a special blanket or something from your childhood.

  94. Thank you so much for the top of the paint can of your “sugar cookie”! We are moving, and I wanted a stronger yellow in the new house, but Duron nor Home Depot could help this weekend. Your posts are always inspiring and your sense of humor is only topped by your designer’s eye for details! Happy Thanksgiving! Trena

Hi, Susan! Just wanted to say that I love everything that you do! So many wonderful ideas. I took your Home Depot revised formula for Sugar Cookie to our local Home Depot in Charlotte yesterday. They couldn’t find it in the system! Luckily the nice lady helping me knew her stuff! She used yours and tweaked it abit to get the right color and also since I wanted an eggshell finish. We’re planning to paint our kitchen walls, and I’ll let you know if the color comes out right. She even labeled it Sugar Cookie in their system. So…cross our fingers, and I’ll keep you posted! 🙂

  96. Hi, Susan!

I sure have missed Tablescape Thursday, but I’m still computerless and also sans my camera. I’m on this IPAD thingy (borrowed) and hope to be back to posting posts with pics after the New Year. Santa is getting me a computer for Christmas! He’s not just getting cookies, but a whole cake for that!

Okay, that being said, do you think this color would work well with deep pinks and sort of bright green (like the color of the gingham check kids sheets in the Company Store Catalog? I am doing something to a bedroom at home, and it is yellow… but such a pale, sickly yellow that I am thinking I need to intensify a bit. I wish I had one of the shames to send you so you could hold it up with your Sugar Cookie, but they are in storage. Long story. Anyhow, I am also thinking of repainting the colors in the St. Augustine house. I do not like Dunmore Cream in that house. It doesn’t work for me, and I can’t believe I let someone talk me into it. It was a moment of weakness. What can I say? You and I like the same things… traditional, pretty rooms… and though it may be “in” according to the person who picked it, it simply does not work with what I have. Even Missy said, I can’t believe YOU have a cream room. I can’t believe it either. LOL Or at least a cream room that has sort of a green tint. I just hate that color in that space with those things. So after the New Year, I’m going to be paint shopping, and I can see going for this. And in terms of the bedroom, I was wondering about the pink with it. I love “clean” colors, and Dunmore is just muddy. This looks clean with the colors you are using.

I have been away from my other mailbox due to someone trying to send me a virus and hack it. So I have a different address not attached to the blog. Please email me here so we can chat. I miss you!!!. Now, that being said, I had a couple of bloggers say that they tried and got some weird religious ad (not even sure of what religion), but others seem to get there fine. LOL Since I don’t have advertisers, I’m not sure what that is about, but I have not taken up with any cults and am not serving any special kool-aid. 😉 Nope, still, just me. A little ole Southern, Christian girl who loves dishes and decorating with colors other than Dunmore Cream.. And besides, you know good and well I would serve iced tea, sweet! 🙂

    Miss you…

    XO,

    Sheila

  97. Just a heads up for everyone. Benjamin Moore has great quality Sugar Cookie paint. It makes the room look rich, fresh, and new!! Try Benjamin Moore

  98. Love your office! I’m trying to do something similar in my master bedroom since all my kids haven’t moved out and left me an extra room yet! I ‘m ready to paint and went to HD but they couldn’t use the new number either. The gal used the color info and made up a small jar but its not yellow at all, just a creamy beige. I went back and tried the suggustion someone else made of Benjamin Moore cornsilk but it seems kinda too yellow. I hate the thought of painting this whole room and not loving the color!! Is there a current Behr paint color card number or name that’s similar to your beloved sugar cookie that I could compare with to see if cornsilk is a close second? Thanks!

    • Hi Sue, Well, dang. That last label is supposed to be current since it was just Sept. 2012. All Home Depot paint departments are not created equal. The one at my HD is pretty awesome. Here’s what I’d do. Call my location (770-977-9700) ask for the paint department and tell them what’s going on. Ask them to color match to the Duron Sugar Cookie on the old fan deck they have. If they try to tell you they don’t have it, tell them, “Yes, you do because my crazy friend, Susan, just had you mix it for her.” Tell them the fan deck is down under the counter. It may not be in their system anymore BUT they can match to it with their fancy, dancy system/computers and then they can call it or email it to YOUR Home Depot location. If they sound extremely busy (since it’s Saturday) you may want to call back on Monday. Often it seems the best folks (for any business) work Monday through Friday and sometimes you get the new guys on weekends. Also, ask to speak to the store manager if you aren’t getting anywhere. They do have the fan deck and they can do this for you.

      • Thanks, I’ll try that Monday morning. I just keep staring at the huge squares of cornsilk and the color that’s supposed to be like yours on my walls. I can’t decide if its my imagination or if the paint made from your numbers, that has absolutely no yellow to it in jar (it’s a creamy beige) actually looks light yellow on the wall. Does your sugar cookie appear to be yellow in the can?
Goodness, who would have ever thunk paint colors could be so difficult!!
        Thanks for your help, Sue

        • I don’t remember that well now how it looked in the can, but I don’t think it looks really yellow. So they were able to mix it for you?

          • Yes, I took a picture on my phone of the paint stickers on your blog and the guy at Home Depot mixed up an 8 oz jar using the numbers in the little boxes. The scan code and the 11 digit number under it didn’t work. There were several people at the counter trying to help and everyone agreed that the sample didn’t look yellow at all, just a creamy beige. It certainly wasn’t a color that you would put on the wall and be scared that it was ” too” yellow! I’ll call your HD Monday morning and hopefully the mystery will be solved.
            Thanks again, Sue

            • That last sticker/formula was where they matched to the fan deck last September 2012, and then printed the formula out. I haven’t had paint mixed up with it but it was supposed to be the correct formula. Hopefully they can get it figured out for you on Monday. Let me know what happens. If they give you a new sticker/formula, let me know and I’ll put it in the post. Looking forward to hearing what you find out.

Hi Susan, Any updates on the yellow paint formula? I was so excited to find this perfect creamy yellow paint, after trying at least 10 sample pots of other yellows & creams my walls. Printed it out the formula ready to go to HD this weekend & get the sample made up. So I am so disappointed to read further that the formula won”t work! Has anyone had success? Thanks!

                • Ginger…does that last formula not work?

I am going by what Sue said in the previous comment.

That was the last we heard. So I don’t think my local HD will have a clue!

  99. LOVE your office…your entire home for that matter. Such talent you have. I am trying to find out where you got that chest next to the green chair. The link didn’t take me to any info on the chest. Thanks so much and Happy Thanksgiving.

  100. great story! I have the same exact experience with paint colors too, except I end up changing my mind mid wall and have switched colors too soon to tell the outcome. I need to stay the course!
Ive tried so many yellows that look totally different during day /night and the sugar cookie looks absolutely dreamy and calm.

  101. …and dont tell me that pretty quilt acted as a paint cover.

  102. I took you Sugar Cookie formula to HD today and they mixed it right up! I’m so excited to start painting my kitchen!!
