A Shell Wreath for the Summer Porch

Welcome to the 177th Metamorphosis Monday!

Greetings!   I’m excited to share a small change on the porch for this Metamorphosis Monday.  Recently, while shopping in HomeGoods I came across a wreath I have been hoping to make for a couple of years now.

Shell Wreath for the Summer Porch

It all started when I saw this shell wreath online a couple of summers ago.   I really wanted to make one since I have lots of nice, big shells, but after an extensive search  I was never able to find the grasses mentioned in the description online.   The one online is made from “natural green caspia, sea grass, avena and white glove with olive green silk hydrangea.”   I hadn’t plan to use any silk flowers…just wanted to go with all natural elements.  Unfortunately, I was never able to make the wreath since I couldn’t find the elements I needed.  The online wreath is 16″ wide and is $44.95.

Image above is from Plow and Hearth

So glad now I never bought the one online because I lucked out this summer and found one that’s almost identical to the one I loved online. Actually, the one I found locally at HomeGoods is better suited for my needs because it measures around 22-23 inches wide, about 6-7 inches wider than the one online.  It’s a great fit for this porch door.

Shell Wreath

My pictures aren’t quite as bright as the inspiration wreath, but you can see how very similar they are.  In addition to being a good bit bigger, this one actually cost less at just $39.99…and no shipping costs.   So, bigger wreath, cost less and no shipping expense…definitely a better deal than if I had purchased it online.

Does anyone know where you can buy grasses like these in this wreath and those used in the wreath online?  Maybe there’s a place they can be ordered online.

I’d love to make one of these for a friend of a mine.

To give you a little perspective on where this door is in relation to the interior rooms, it’s the door leading out from the family room onto the porch.

Family Room

You can see in this old post, there’s normally a basket of daisies on this door for summertime.  The daisies are all faded from years on the porch, so it was definitely time for a little update. (See more of the family room in this post: Reforming my Faux Ways)

It’s  beginning to feel more like summer on the porch with each passing day.

Love this time of year!  Can’t wait to see how you’re adding some summer to your home!

  17. Laurie Carlton says

Congratulations on your new wreath. It’s always great to find what we want, better and at a bargain. You are so patient to have waited so long. I spent about 2 hours on here last night reading various posts you have made, inspired by the attitude to stick to what you really want and not to settle for less. As for the grasses, I’ve seen those growing often down here in this part of Texas, however I don’t know the name of them. I usually have lived in apartments, but the few times I’ve lived in a house and had a yard, the most fun to do was to take a section of the yard and refuse to cut it, and just see what would come up out of the ground if it was allowed to grow freely and not be mowed down. Wild grasses are abundant – out of the city, in a field that does not get mowed down for hay etc. And I’ve had some wonderous plants come up just from bird seeds as well. It’s fun to just watch things grow and discover the mystery of what they will become. I bet if you took an adventure drive into the countryside you’d find what you are looking for. Just watch out for ant beds and other critters. Have you googled ‘dried grasses for sale’ … seems just about anything can be found somewhere online. Good luck finding the materials you want! And congratulations on your new ‘home’ here.

    • That’s a good idea, Laurie…I’ll try that. I hope this wreath holds up well after all this time wanting one. lol At least it’s in a protected area…so hopefully it will last for a while. I noticed the Plow and Hearth wreath is made with Sea Grass…same thing they make the rugs we see.

  18. Susan,
Gotta love Home Goods! I just wish mine was closer.

    Thanks for hosting!
    Laura

  19. Good Morning Susan,
I love your sea shell wreath, I have been looking at them also and found them a bit pricey too. What a wonderful find..I am going to try to make one I have a lot of sea shell and a wreath so all I need is the greenry and some dry wheat stocks. I will post about it when its done.
I have been away from my blog for the last month, its always a joy to be able to read your posts and join in on Metamorphosis Monday.
    Have a sweet day, Elizabeth

    • Elizabeth, please do! Take pics to share with us. Let me know where you find the straw/grasses and such. Michaels didn’t have anything appropriate when I looked but there must be some place to buy it…probably online.

  20. That is such a pretty wreath, and so different from every shell wreath I’ve ever seen. Love it! It pays to be patient, huh? 🙂 I’m so excited for summer too! yahoo! Have a great week, and thank you for hosting!

  21. What a fabulous wreath and a great buy! I have seen similar and they are always so expensive. Have to love that Home Goods! Thanks too for hosting the always fun Met Monday – I swear the inspiration is greater every single week. Jane

  22. I love the shell wreath, soooo pretty! Thank you for hosting a fantastic party each as well, you are appreciated 🙂

    Hugs, Tanya

  23. A beautiful wreath and a beautiful addition to your porch! Thanks for the party.

  24. Stunning!! Sea shells are one of the best things to decorate with. I absolutely love a nautical look.

  25. Wow, your wreath turned out beautiful… might
just get me up and moving to make one for my
    front door…
Thanks so much for hosting once again!
    very nice
    Sandy

  26. It’s a beautiful wreath, Susan…and so nice that you finally got it! The grasses look like sea oats which, of course, it’s illegal to pick! lol Good luck on finding what you need! Thanks for hosting!…hugs…Debbie

    • Debbie, no need to worry, they aren’t sea oats. The description says sea grass, like they use to make the rugs. 🙂 Yep, very illegal to pick sea oats since they prevent erosion of the sand/beaches.

  27. I follow your blog for home decor and decorating as I’m in the process of decorating my new condo. I have a photography blog mostly nature and travel if you wish to check it out.

I’m writing as you were wondering about sources for materials for wreaths. I found a website a while back that I saved the address of for future reference. It’s called Save on Crafts. Check it out. It might help.

    Carol

  28. While I’m sad to see the basket of daisies go, (I am a Huge fan of daisies)your wreath looks awesome on your door.I also love your new blog, it is wonderful and so easy to maneuver around.I have been a fan of yours since moonlight and magnolias-rate your space.I am also looking forward to see your someday library room come to life. Have a fabulous week.

    • Wow, Jeanie, that’s a long time! Thanks so much for hanging in there so long. 🙂 Wish I could do that room, now. Things always seem to take precedent. Next up, gotta do something with my landscaping. The trees have shaded everything out and my yard needs some major, expensive work done, I’m afraid. Would rather play in the “library” though.

  29. Your wreath (and the inspiration) are so pretty and natural. I have purchased almost all of the naturally dried materials from http://www.nettletonhollow.com. Their materials are superb, and long-lasting, since they are so well-preserved. I think you’ll enjoy the site. I have been pleased every purchase from them!

  30. Great wreath, and I like it better than the first one. I found one at HG, too, a couple of years ago, which I have had hanging over my bed. I am thinking I am going to move it to the powder room for summer, since I am about to make some changes in the BR. I don’t know where to find those grasses, but my best suggestion might be a good floral designer.

  31. Ann s Mindicino says

Beautiful wreath. I wonder what do you do with all your creations? Even more, all the wonderful pieces that you post of Tablescape Thursdays? I don’t entertain a lot and have quite a bit of china and sterling from my mom & various sources. So, do you store everything neatly in some way or what? Have you ever done a blog about how to design a china cabinet propertly? Mine has beautiful pieces in it but it’s pretty messy and therefore doesn’t show off mine treasures as well as it should. I’ll search your blog especially now that searching is easier. I would love to see a blog about this. Thanks. ann

    • Ann, just click on the heading DIY/Tabletop/China Storage and under closets you’ll find a closet I turned into china storage. I think that post is also linked under Before & After/Pantry-Closets. Also, check the FAQ at the top of right sidebar. I answer that question in a lot more depth there. 🙂
As for wreaths and decorative items, I store them in closets, garage and occasionally the basement. Mostly just in closets. This house has a lot of closet space and eve storage, which was one of the things that drew us to it. You can see some of it in this post: https://betweennapsontheporch.net/pre-christmas-preparations/ Thanks for the great questions!

  32. Your shell wreath is just gorgeous!
    Thanks for hosting again.
    Have a great week!

  33. I love the wreath. It really adds a nice touch of summer to your porch!

  34. That is one fabulous wreath, indeed! It would look so perfect on our front door.
Happy to join your linky party this week, and plan to be a regular! Your blog link has a sweet home under Monday, right in my big cheery pink footer. : ) Thanks for hosting!

  35. Your wreath is just beautiful! Thank you so much for hosting this party each week!

  36. I love your new wreath! OK, I’ve stared and stared at the photographs…how do you hang your wreath on the door so that no hook shows? Command hooks? I’ve only seen over the door hooks, but then I’m decoratively-challenged!

    • Well, that door is as old as the house, which is 30 years old…so the mullions are wood. I just put a teeny, skinny nail in one of the mullions. The other door from the kitchen is a newer door I added when I added on the porch so it’s a metal/insulated French door. On that one I used one of those things you hang over the door, although they make those super, dooper strong magnetic hook things you can use on storm doors and French doors.

  37. Your seashell wreath looks great! I totally need to make a wreath like this for my front door. I already have a nice collection of shells, just need to find the right wreath. Thanks for the inspiration 🙂

  38. Hi Susan! Love your new wreath, but unfortunately I don’t have any online sources for grasses. Thanks for hosting!

    Hugs,
    Susan and Bentley

  39. Wow! Have you seen some of the cool stuff on the party this week?? Awesome!

  40. Lovely wreath! Happy Summer decorating! Thanks for hosting…

    xo Lynda

  41. Thanks for hosting!

  42. Once again you have got me off and stalking the Home Goods stores. Thankfully, after several attempts I snagged a garden stool in early May. I saw a similar wreath in the LL Bean catalogue for $59, so I’d love to find one at a Home Goods price.

  43. Once again, my thanks for throwing a party for us. The idea for the coastal wreath is so fun and especially doable here where I live. Easy to come by the items and it would really add a lot to the front door here and fit in all year really.

    Thanks!
    Liz

    • Hey Susan!
I’m late to the party but I came!! LOL
I love your wreath- and what a great value! Sometimes it does pay to have patience! I have seen some grasses and wheat at Michaels in a section where they have natural dried products. They are usually wrapped with some cellophane.

  44. Your wreath looks wonderful! Love coastal changes for summer.
    Sherry

  45. Susan,

Thanks for hosting a fabulous party! I wish to have as much style as you one day ~ You continue to amaze me!

  47. Susan,
Your wreath is so pretty.Love all those shells.I wish I could have a wreath like that on my front door. But we have too many birds. They would tear it apart to make a nest.Thank you for hosting.

  51. Hi Susan! I love your wreath and the one you bought is the prettiest! Love it and it looks wonderful on your door. Thanks for popping in to see me. I’m running a tad behind as we’ve been gone the last five days.
    Be a sweetie,
    shelia 😉

  52. Your wreath is spectacular. What a great find and worth the wait. Thank you for hosting.

    Mary

  53. Your wreath is amazing!
Love all the layers and details.
    Just gorgeous!

  54. That wreath is perfect next to your green hutch!! I would love to have a porch like yours!!

  55. Hi Susan- no Homegoods here so I will have to make my own sea side wreath- I will have to collect the shells and grasses first!! Thank you for the inspiration, it’s lovely!!

  56. Ooo…love, love, love your wreath! Saveoncrafts has several grasses. http://www.save-on-crafts.com/siandpvcgr.html To make or to buy one? Hmmm…

  57. I’m impressed with your wreath. You amaze me making this wreath, all the shell chargers, a wedding, changing your blog server and not to mention all the blog posts in between! I would still be working on the first shell charger!!! I need to be a fly on the wall and see HOW you get it all done!

    • Hi Bonnie, Thanks! Well, I can’t take credit for the wreath…that was a HomeGoods find. I need to finish up those chargers…itching to use those in a table setting sometime soon. 🙂

  58. Susan, Luck was on your side at HG. I find HG is hit or miss! When hit, you better buy or else the next time it is a miss! Love it on your door but I also liked the daisis in the basket too!

  59. Thank you again for hosting this link party. It’s really great when the more established blogs give us newbies a chance to shine 🙂

Honestly…I like your wreath even better than the one in the inspiration photo. Yours is a little more subtle and very elegant. Very petty 🙂

  60. I meant “pretty”!!! Sheesh.

  61. I bought grasses like these last year for a bridal shower with a beach wedding. I found them at Joann Fabrics.

  62. Susan I actually bought the wreath from Plow and Hearth a couple of years ago and I’ve used it in several places in my home. Currently it resides in my gazebo because it sheds little green things if its touched, brushed up against, or even the breeze from someone walking by it causes little pieces or grass or green fluff to fall to the floor. I’m not very crafty but its lucky you held off and made your own!!! It looks very nice!

  63. What a beautiful wreath!

  64. The Shopping Tooth fairy says

Hi Susan, I am new to your post and I must say I Love Love Love all of your Ideas and Tablescapes. I decorate for every season and for every holiday inside my home and the outside of my home. All of my friends and neighbors get a big kick out of my decorations and can’t wait for the next holiday to roll around to see what ideas I come up with. I just love your beautiful wreath. I have been searching for one just like that so thank you for your post. Have you looked at Michael’s for the grasses?? Here in California our Michael’s has all kinds of materials like that. Also check out a floral supply they may have grasses if not they could steer you in the right direction. I have been thinking about blogging but do no know where to start. I have been posting my Tablescapes and outside decorations on Facebook for all my long distance friends to enjoy. Happy Flag Day!!!!!

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
