A Something’s Gotta Give Table

Not so very long ago, I was a woman on a mission.  My sewing room/craft room/office  was gradually moving closer to being completed.

But I still needed a small chest to go along side the chair in my little reading corner.

I searched through every thrift/antique store in my area and when I couldn’t find the chest I had envisioned in my head, (why do I do that to myself?!) I gave up and began looking for a round table, instead.

Once I gave up the dream of a chest and decided to just go with a table, by golly I wanted that table to be special.  I found my inspiration in the movie, Something’s Gotta Give.   Do you remember seeing this cute table in the bedroom of the main character, Erica Barry, when I shared a tour of this wonderful movie house, Here:  Tour the Home in Something’s Gotta Give?   The whimsical design and the tassel apron caught my eye.

Rose Tarlow Table in Something's Gotta Give Movie_wm

After searching online A LOT, I was never able to find the exact table seen in Erica’s bedroom.  However, I did find several tables with the same fanciful spirit.  They were all priced a bit higher than my office budget allowed, but I thought it would be fun to share all the ones I bookmarked with you.  Maybe one will steal your heart.

This table probably comes the closest in style to the Something’s Gotta Give table. Unfortunately, I can’t remember where I spotted it online.  If someone knows, let me know and I’ll add it to the post.  I don’t think it’s the exact same table, but it’s pretty close, isn’t it?  I’m not too crazy about the tassels on the center column/pedestal.  I don’t believe the Something’s Gotta Givetable has those.

The “French Fleur Table” from Cottage Chic also reminded me of the table in Erica’s bedroom.   Cute table!

Loved the apron on this Cottage Table from Carolina Accents.  Don’t these tables make you never want a plain, round, boring table ever again?  Or, is it just me and I’m weird?  On second thought…don’t answer that!

The Mendocino Nightstand from Cottage Chic had the right vibe with its whimsical-styled apron, but the shape and height wasn’t quite right for my reading corner.  I do love the style of this table, though, especially the legs and the apron.  It almost looks like it belongs in the Alice in Wonderland movie, doesn’t it? 🙂

Though this one didn’t quite have the Something’s Gotta Give look, it was still a cutie I considered:

Foyer Table in Distressed Cottage White from Butler on Amazon

And finally, this metal table caught my eye with its scalloped apron:

“Metal Table with Scalloped Apron Edge & Scrolled Trestle Legs” from Vintage Accents:

What did I choose?  If you’ve been reading BNOTP for very long, you already know the answer and can skip the next part of this post. 🙂  I eventually ordered this table in white from Pottery Barn Teen.  It had the whimsy factor going on and the price was definitely right at only $99.

Here’s how it looked beside my chair the day it arrived.  Try to imagine it with a cute lamp and a few books:  Not bad, huh?  But guess what?

The day after the Pottery Barn table arrived, I found the chest I had so long been seeking on a trip to Pier 1 for napkin rings. 🙂  Figures.   Murphy’s Law is always at work in this house!

After carrying the cute Pottery Barn table from room to room to porch to room, I finally had to face the fact, I just didn’t need it despite how cute it was. So I sadly returned it. Hope I don’t regret that one day.

Here’s a more recent pic with the dress form in this room.

Have you ever had that happen…search high and low for something, give up, buy something else and then find what you really wanted a day or two later?

So, what did you think about the tables in this post?  That first one really looks a lot like the table in Something’s Gotta Give, doesn’t it?

Update:  Joni (Cote de Texas) knew where to find the table.  It’s online at Rose Tarlow.  It’s the Nantucket Side Table.  Thanks, Joni!

your office is sooo cute! that table is from Rose Tarlow. I have seen a really good copy but now can't remember where? Design Guild? I have to look for it. Still, your chest looks good – like it better than the table!

  2. The Real Me! says:

I think you should put your bottle tree in there, I'm just sayin'!

    Have a great weekend.

Loved the movie and I think I loved the house and its furnishings most. I do remember that table, it was a beautiful piece. Your new chest with the pullout shelf looks fabulous and goes well with your PB pieces.

  4. Janette - The2Seasons says:

I thought every single one of those tables was adorable, but your little chest with the pull-out tray seems to fit the space perfectly.

Hi – You made the right decision – the weight of the final table balances the weight of the chair – thanks for sharing your decision process with us! Also – love your SGG house tour!

    Happy Weekend-

Hi, Susan! Wow…that 1st one is pretty close. If not for the difference in the body, I'd say it was THE one. I actually have that Foyer Table in Distressed Cottage White! Great table! I am in love with the one that looks like it belongs in an "Alice In Wonderland" movie! Very whimsical. So glad you were able to find the chest you initially longed for. It all worked out in the end! Have a great weekend!

I recently discovered your post – quite by accident and now I'm addicted! You've opened a whole new world for me and for that I say "Thank You". This is my first comment but I'm sure it won't be my last :0) I loved the movie SGTG and that table (though I missed it in the movie) is absolutely divine. Thanks for sharing!

Your room is looking beautiful. Sometimes it is the hunt for an item that is so much fun but heart breaking at the same time. I know that I grow impatient very quickly.

  10. Mid-Atlantic Martha says:

Love your little round table — but I would go with the chest too — a gal just can't have too many drawers in her life.

  11. Anonymous says:

The chest is my favorite as well. Are those bun feet on it removable? It looks like a matching piece to your desk if the feet were removed.

  12. Debbie B says:

Love the inspiration of your new Sewcroff. I am remaking our former 'living room' into my new sewing studio as we speak. Today's project is to load up all the shelves so our 2 year old grandgirl won't have plenty of 'stuff' to get into!
I am thinking that I need one of those pottery barn tables by my chair in our den – if it comes in red! Would probably look better than the tv tray I'm using now!
I have a lovely french provincial leather topped table that my mom let me take with me when I got married 35 years ago. It's still one of my favorite pieces of furniture, but it sits by hubby's chair, not mine.

  13. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says:

Joni, Thanks! I should have come ask you…why didn't think of that?! I'll add the pic and link to the post. 🙂

I did a post on the Rose Tarlow table (including sources)and a little something extra that I am still proud of a year later.

  15. I have so enjoyed watching your Sewcroff come together. It is beautiful! Now you have me on a new obsession…the Rose Tarlow table. That would be so perfect in my mst bedroom!

  16. Jeannine says:

As cute as the tables are, I think the chest is so much better in your space. Often I give up a search and then find exactly what I was looking for.

  17. Jane @ Jane's Junk and Treasures says:

    The chest looks great!
And you crack me up, spotting that table!!! Too funny!

  18. Sewconsult says:

Chest! It gives more weight/balance to that side of the room It might have been the perspective, but the table looked a bit high for the chair. I have a similar chair in a guest room and it sits lower.

  19. Marcia (One Heart) says:

I think I'm gonna watch that movie again tonight. I've been seeing the title everywhere across blogland these days and I do love it.

The chest looks so much better than any of the tables, and my favorite table is the Mendocino Nightstand.

    Your room is looking gorgeous.

  20. Phil and Darby Hawley says:

This office is becoming more and more beautiful 🙂

  21. FABBY'S LIVING says:

Thank you so much I hope it's not too odd to ask! Ilove your blog!

  25. Susan, your office turned out AWESOME! I've been watching the progression. You must be thrilled with the results. The Pier 1 chest is perfect next to the chair, too. There's nothing like having your own space.

  26. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says:

Thanks, Jilly! Actually that's not a strange question at all. 🙂 It's 13 1/2 feet x 11 1/2 feet. The 13 1/2 is from the wall where the chair is to the windows and the 11 1/2 is the width across. Hope that helps!

  27. Hollace says:

I like the base of the Rose Tarlow table much better that the heavier looking base with tassels. Plus, it has the name "Nantucket". What's not to love? I wonder how you notice all these furniture details while you're watching a movie….

and, thanks for your answer on the bottle tree question. I didn't know about where to find the colored bottles. I'll keep my eyes open.

I would have voted for # 1, lots of character. But I like the one you purchased too. Sometimes, you gotta'just buy what you like, you'll never find it again.

love this space you have here. i'd love to hang out in that office all day long.

  31. That little chest is just the perfect addition to your cute reading nook. Love the dress form, too!

    Hi Susan,
The table was cute, but doesn't hold a candle to that great chest.
So glad you found what you really were looking for otherwise, you might have regretted it later. Any time,
I wind up settling I usually regret it later!! lol
Hope all is well with you hon,

  36. Thank you Susan, my Hubby and I are looking at moving and rebuilding in the country soon. I asked him for a craft room which he was more than happy to say yes too.
On our plans it comes out the same size as yours. Do you find that space big enough?
    Thanks for your help!!!

The Rose Tarlow table really is special…I do think that you'll end up loving your chest even better because it will provide. additional. storage! Cherry Kay

  38. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says:

Well, if you were thinking of using this exact furniture/layout, I would encourage you to make it a bit bigger. I could really use another foot or so because the desk is right up to the window. If you want to put a big island in the center, a bigger space would be better, also. I definitely wouldn't go smaller.
Check out Bonnie's wondeful craft room that I blogged about here…seriously drool worthy. 🙂

You have created such a beautiful space to spend time. Love it!

  45. Atticmag says:

I fell for the same table when I saw it at Holly Hunt a while back. It's even better in person.

  46. Hi! I just found your blog and love this room! It is just beautiful! I wonder if you might remember where you purchased the gift wrapping station you have on the wall. I saw a beautiful gift wrapping station yearts ago in the Ballard Designs catalog but never bought it…the one you have is just as sweet! Thanks in advance!

  47. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says:

Thanks so much! The wrapping paper station/organizer is from Pottery Barn. I bought it this past summer. They removed it from site just a couple of weeks after I purchased mine but it was pretty popular, so I bet they will bring it back, if they haven't already. Hope you are able to locate one!

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
