Goodbye Squirrel Highway

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on whether I should move the Savannah Holly I planted recently back a little toward the house, or leave it where I had planted it. In case you missed that post, I planted a Savannah Holly tree at the right corner of my home as kind of an anchor plant for that end of the house. The landscape plan created by a landscape designer last year indicated the tree should be … [Read more...]

The Landscape Plan

Last September, after a summer spent reclaiming my front yard from the overgrown jungle it had become, I consulted the services of a local garden nursery and had a landscape plan created. I thought you might enjoy seeing it so I'm sharing it in today's post. To get a closer look, press CTRL + a few times on your keyboard. Once you're done viewing the plan, press CTRL 0 (zero) to return to normal. When … [Read more...]

Need Your Opinion: 8 Feet vs 10 Feet

Welcome to the 297th Metamorphosis Monday! Greetings! How was your weekend? This weekend was a productive one around here. I was able to get all the Savannah Holly trees in, although one may need to be moved. I need your help to decide. I hired someone to help me get all the trees planted and I worked alongside him digging the holes and helping the entire time. I'm sore today, but it's a good … [Read more...]

Welcome to the 288th Metamorphosis Monday! Bob Clark, the Director and a co-writer of the movie, A Christmas Story, had trouble finding funding for this now iconic Christmas movie when he first set out to make it. He had an extensive history of making horror films so none of the production companies felt comfortable funding him in the making of a comedy/family oriented movie. His next movie was Porky's … [Read more...]

In The BNOTP Library: French Influences

It's been a few days since I shared a book from my Decor*Gardening*Entertaining library. I've been working on something and it should be ready real soon. I know some Between Naps On The Porch readers enjoy getting an email when a new post is up at BNOTP but I'm guessing not everyone who reads BNTOP may be interested in the book review posts. I haven't had any complaints but just to make sure you aren't … [Read more...]

In The BNOTP Library: Perfect Porches by Paula S. Wallace

After seeing all those fabulous porches earlier this morning in our tour of a wonderful lake home and guest cottage on The Ford Plantation, I knew just the book to share with you this evening. I figure with a blog titled Between Naps on the Porch, it's  my solemn duty to sample and road test all the available porch books to be found! :)   In the BNOTP Library: Perfect Porches: Designing … [Read more...]

Screened-in Porch Freshened Up With Paint

Welcome to the 287th Metamorphosis Monday! Happy Monday! Hope you had an awesome summer weekend! I was fretting a bit over mine, wondering how I would be getting a post ready for Met Monday since I dropped my computer off for repairs early on Friday and when last I checked on Saturday, they still haven't gotten around to working on it. I was 4th in line, now 2nd, so hopefully they will be repairing it … [Read more...]

In The BNOTP Library: Nicky Haslam’s Folly De Grandeur

My main computer, the one where I store all my photos, is at the computer doctor getting worked on. It feels like I'm missing my right arm. Hopefully I will have it back in the next day or two. In the meantime, I thought I'd share a beautiful book from my decor library. If you're new to this series I started a while back, you'll find all the books I've shared on the topics of Decorating, Gardening and … [Read more...]

Inside The Kitchen of “A Christmas Story” Movie House

Welcome to the 306th Tablescape Thursday! A visit to the 19th-century Victorian home used in all the exterior scenes of the movie, A Christmas Story, is an interactive one. As we stepped inside the front door for the tour, our guide immediately invited us to have a seat in the living room. Whaaat? That's not something you normally get to do while touring a home! I knew right then this wasn't going to be … [Read more...]

Tour A Christmas Story Movie House: The House & Neighborhood

Recently I took a trip to Ohio to visit family and while there I decided to do something I've been wanting to do for ages. I hopped in the car one morning and struck out for Cleveland to tour the home featured in the movie, A Christmas Story.   This wonderful old Victorian home located at 3159 W. 11th Street in Cleveland Ohio, was used for all the exterior shots of the … [Read more...]

Having just featured a book depicting lots of wonderful rooms decorated in English style, I couldn't resist sharing another one of my favorite English design books. A Garden Update

Welcome to the 286th Metamorphosis Monday! We've been having spring-like weather all this week, crazy weather for the middle of July. The cooler temps have been a nice respite from the heat. The garden I put in around the mailbox several months ago has been thriving in the milder temps.   I thought for this Met Monday I'd share a how's it changed over the past six weeks. Here's how it … [Read more...]

In The BNOTP Library: English Decoration

I love English design! Long before I even knew what "style" or "look" fell under the moniker of English Design, I accidentally decorated my living room in an English/Hunt vibe. I decorated that room just buying what I loved, never thinking about a particular style or design.   It was actually a dearheart on Rate My Space (remember that site) who awoke me to the idea that my living room had … [Read more...]

In The BNOTP Library: The Birding Life

This morning's post about the lovely bluebirds who visit my feeder for mealworms reminded me of a book I've been wanting to share for a while. Remember when I shared the book, Living With Dogs by Laurence Sheehan? A short time later I shared another one of his great books, The Gardener's Life. I've quickly become a Sheehan fan and if there's one thing I've learned, it's that his books are not only about … [Read more...]

Beautiful Bluebirds Gathering Mealworms For Their Babies

Bluebirds, love them so much! Each year they nest several times in the dovecote in my perennial garden.   I'm not sure now if it's the same pair returning or if maybe their children are coming back here to nest.   Even though a woodpecker put a big hole in the dovecote this past winter, they still nested in the dovecote once more. I started to take it down to try to repair it … [Read more...]

The Lost Dreams & Ghosts of Longwood Plantation

No matter how much you hear about Longwood Plantation before you actually visit for a tour, nothing can really prepare you for what you find inside. This six-story, 30,000 square foot mansion was designed by Samuel Sloan, a well-known architect from Philadelphia for cotton baron Haller Nutt and his wife, Julia. Construction on Longwood began in 1859. It came to an abrupt halt in 1861 when word reached … [Read more...]

Has To Get Worse Before It Gets Better

That woman you see, the one walking around muttering and looking distracted...yeah, that's me. I know it has to get worse before it gets better but I still don't especially like it. The porch that normally looks like this...   ...currently looks like this. I just keep reminding myself, chaos is a sign progress is being made. I almost forgot to share a book from my decor library this evening. What’s Your Style? Take The Quiz!

Recently, I came across a blog called, Nautical by Nature, written by Kate. On her "About" page, Kate has a fun style quiz. I loved reading her responses so I thought it would be fun if we took the quiz, too. I added four questions of my own about books, movies, plays, etc...  to the quiz. Choosing The Right Furniture For A Room

When I moved into my current home around 23 years ago, I knew almost nothing about decorating or furnishing a home. When first moving into a home, it can feel overwhelming and even a little intimidating trying to decide how to decorate all those empty or half-empty rooms. The room that challenged me and perhaps taught me the most about decorating was my family room. I had never bought furniture for a … [Read more...]

Pickiest Lamp Person In The World

In The BNOTP Library: A Field Guide To American Houses

I used to get so frustrated when I'd see a house and couldn't figure out its architectural style or design. Some homes are pretty obvious, I can spot a Greek Revival a mile away and I bet you can, too. But some are a blend of architectural styles and can be difficult to pin down. This is one of those books you'll find yourself using again and again. I keep mine about two feet from me here on my desk. … [Read more...]
