Between Naps on the Porch is Moving!

Have you ever looked forward to something and dreaded it at the same time?  Mixed feelings.  Yep, I definitely have mixed feelings today.  Between Naps on the Porch is moving…moving to Word Press.

(Image from Google Images, Pinterest and a bunch more places)

If everything goes as planned, you’ll hardly notice a thing.  If you read BNOTP via an RSS feeder or email, you should still receive it without any issues.  If you read online, you’ll automatically be routed to BNOTP’s new home.  The move should take place sometime in the next few days.

As with any move, there will be some “unpacking” time.  But shortly you’ll find a much more organized, better designed BNOTP when you visit.  There will be category headers with drop-down menus which will allow you to quickly find the information or post you seek.

It will take me a little while to get all those posts tagged and in place under the categories and there will be a slight delay due to a special wedding that’s scheduled this Sunday :) but hopefully I’ll get those categories filled in quickly.  I’m trying to be optimistic about that part.  I see some late nights ahead of me.

Why is Between Naps on the Porch moving?
Well, there are lots of little reasons but the main reasons are:
1. When you blog on the Blogger platform, you’re blogging for free.  You’re using Blogger’s resources.  Some folks say you don’t really own your blog, although Blogger says that isn’t true.  But what is true is if at some point Blogger’s system mistakenly thinks BNOTP is a spam type blog, it can make it disappear.

The thought of losing 3 1/2 years worth of work is unthinkable.  I’ve heard of it happening and I know many of you know someone who has had it happen to them.  Blogger does have some options for trying to get your blog back if it’s deleted in error, or so I’ve read.  I just don’t want to have to worry about possibly having to deal with this one day.

2.  Blogger has made lots and lots of really great improvements in the Blogger platform over the past year or so.  They’ve added threaded comments and they’ve improved SEO by letting us title and add alt tags to our photos.  But, Blogger templates are still very limited.

A Word Press blog can be designed however you wish.  There are talented designers out there working every day to create new “plug-ins” for WP blogs.  Plug-ins are sort of like gadgets in Blogger or apps for the iPad.  They let you add cool functionality to your blog.

What are the negatives of moving?  Well, you have to pay hosting fees and as your blog grows, those can really add up.  If something breaks, you’re on your own or you have to find someone who can fix it.   You’re also responsible for keeping everything updated so your blog stays protected and functioning.

Another negative (but not really) is the horizontal pictures you see here at BNOTP are going to be a little smaller.  This shouldn’t really be a problem, though, because anytime you’re reading any blog or site and you want to see bigger pictures, simply hit Ctrl + on your keyboard a couple of times.  Hit the + button as many times as you like while holding down the Ctrl button and you can make those pictures as large as you want.  You can make them fill up your whole screen, if you like.

Once you hit Ctrl +, all the pictures in the post will be equally large.  Once you’re done reading a post, hit “Ctrl, zero” to take things back to normal.  It will no longer be necessary to scroll from left to right to see the BNOTP sidebar after the move.

Tablescape Thursday:
I hope to have Tablescape Thursday up tomorrow morning, but if it’s running behind, I know you’ll understand. Timing is a bit rough for this change since my son is getting married on Sunday.  Lots going on around here.  I still need to find a pair of shoes that are comfortable and I need to pick up a few more things to get ready for the big day.

Thanks for being patient during the transition.  You’ll have a new and improved BNOTP once all the dust settles!

  1. Hi! I will be moving my blog to WordPress as well soon…plus I am changing the name to The Colorful Bee (I hope that that doesn’t confuse too mnay people). I guess, like you – it’s a great idea to do a post noting the change and when – and what the differences and improvements will be. I didn’t know about the smaller photos – that’s a bummer. I always do the control plus thing but I don’t know how many people know about that (I’ve taught a lot of people so far!). I am a little frightened about changing but I know that the SEO will be better and that’s more important for me as a blogger. Are you finding a difference at all in creating your posts? How much of a learning curve?

Congratulations on your son’s wedding! I know it’s a big deal and a lot of work – we have had one wedding so far…and only 5 more to go! We only have one daughter living with us right now. She’s in a serious relationship so perhaps there will be wedding bells for her soon. And one other daughter is in a very commited relationship as well. Knoowing my luck there will be two wedding in the same year. YIKES!

I wanted you to know that you are on my top 5 list of bloggers I admire. I look up to you because you have a beautiful blog but it’s a great resource as well. I want to model my blog after yours (but use my own ideas and creative spark). Thanks for being out there for me to emulate!

    Linda

    • Thanks, Linda! I don’t like creating my posts in WP as much…it’s like the old interface in Blogger and not that user friendly. I will most likely end up using Live Writer to create posts, I think…if I can get it to work with WP okay. Blogger did have an awesome interface and post creation system.

  2. Terry @ La Bella Vie says:

My main objection with WordPress is having to fill in those blanks; name, blog name, email etc. I sure hope all goes well with the move, you have enough going on this weekend!
I wish you happiness and love throughout this beautiful time for you and your family! I know everything will be lovely!
    Hugs dear friend!
    ~Terry

  3. Linda @ bushel and a pickle says:

Would you mind sending me some of those sites? I am working on improvign my wordpress blog but and sadly lacking in tech saviness and skill. Thanks.
    Happy Memorial Weekend!

  4. Designs by Pinky says:

  6. Alycia Nichols says:

Moving…whether it’s a home or a blog…can be a traumatic thing. I hope your transition is smooth and trauma/drama-free! I was with Blogger for about 3 months when I first started blogging, but quickly switched over to Word Press and have stayed for the last 2 years. The switch was a lot easier than I anticipated, and I hope it is for you, too. If you ever need a quick question answered about it, just let me know and I’ll try to help. I might be able to answer it more quickly than the Support Staff or the Support Forums. Good luck!

  7. Barbara says:

Best wishes for your son’s wedding! I hope everything is just wonderful. Good luck with the move!

  8. Best wishes for your son’s wedding! My one and only child, my daughter, was married last Sunday, a mere four days ago. What a life changing experience!

  9. Congrats on taking the plunge and moving to WordPress! I know you have had many sleepless nights due to this decision. It a couple months, when everything is working smoothly, you will wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.

Have a blast at your son’s wedding!! Enjoy every minute – it will go so fast. See you soon!

    Missi

  10. Carolyn says:

Hopefully, you will get everything figured out and all I will have to do is wait for BNOTP to appear, as it does now! I have followed you and your wonderful talents for a good portion of the time that you have been blogging. There was a time that AOL did something and I couldn’t receive your blog. You suggested that I try a gmail address, which I did, but now you are back on AOL. It’s all a mystery to me!

Just curious, are you tablescaping or anything for your son’s wedding? We have three sons; two are married and I was a very active participant in decorating for their weddings! Such joy! Bless you!

  11. Jane@Cottage at the Crossroads says:

My gosh! You have a lot on your plate right now. First things first-GO FIND THOSE SHOES so you can enjoy every minute of this special weekend! I’ve had a WordPress blog since I started because my step-sons advised me to do so. So glad I listened to them!

  12. crystal woolever says:

My first blog was deleted by blogger because they thought it was spam, I switched to wordpress but could never get a grip on it. I eventually did end up on blogger again, it’s just easier for me to navigate. One thing though when blogger deleted my blog I was still able to retrieve the blog and switch it to WordPress. I do know how frustrating it is though. Good luck to you!!!

  13. Modern Country Lady says:

Wow! That’s a big decision- but I am sure for good reasons..and how super exciting your son’s getting married..you don’t actually look old enough to have a son of that age :-)))))

  14. casadeberry says:

Oh yay! I moved to WordPress last year and love it!!!

  15. The Dragonfly On Iron Gate says:

We still have that glow every time we think of their wonderful celebration of love! Of course we want details… & photos! Love and blessings to all…Susan from South of Macon
P.S. Good luck with the move to WordPress… we’ll see you there!

  17. Thank YOU! This post has been very enlightening..I too have been writing for a bit over 3 years and my primary motivation is the written material for my children to access..certainly don’t won[t to lose -will follow up on this..have a lovely happy happy wedding..YES THOSE SHOES ARE OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE..last Nov. I tossed aside a slinky new pair I loved..went for comfort..good choice.

  18. Marlene says:

  20. Madonna says:

I wondered why you were not at WordPress all along. I have been slowly starting a blog and through copious reading WordPress is the consensus. Are you building your site or do you have help? If you are doing it yourself I will email you some helpful sites that helped me. I still have not published because I am working on my photography which is slowing improving.

I hope all the best for the wedding day. Hope you will share with us.

BTW – I love the photo of the suitcases – it really is true, a picture is worth a thousand words.

  21. Nancy Holte says:

Here’s a tip from a mom who has been through three sons’ weddings. Buy TWO pairs of shoes then you’ll have a back up pair when the first pair is ready to send your feet over the edge. Enjoy your weekend!

  22. Bernadette says:

I hope I can find you. I’m not computer literate. I start each day reading your blog and it will not be the same if I can’t find you. Please keep your wonderful heading with the house, fence and precious cat.
    Congratulatory on your son’s wedding!
    Blessings,
    Bernadette

  23. Dorinda says:

Susan – Wishing you well with your blog moving and all the best with your son’s wedding. I hope it’s a beautiful day and can’t wait to see pics, etc. All the best to you, always…Hugs, Dorinda :)

  24. Hi Susan,
Best wishes for your son’s wedding on Sunday.
Hope WP works out for you. I don’t understand the ins and outs of blogging…..I just follow my sister Trish’s advice.
    Have a good week
    God Bless

  25. If I lose your blog I will be so upset. Sure hope that doesn’t happen.

  27. I have been considering moving over to wordpress as well but it seemed a little confusing. I’m sure you’ll share about wordpress as you figure it out! Hope the move goes well, can’t wait to follow you over there. Enjoy the wedding this weekend!

  28. Denise Adorian says:

Enjoy your weekend to the max.Hope to find you as soon as I can.-Denise from Coffeeberry Cottage

  29. Electically Vintage says:

You’ll love it but there is a learning curve. Have a great time at the wedding (wear a long dress and nobody will notice if you wear flip flops)!
    Kelly

  30. Good heavens I thought you were going to say your house was for sale! LOL

I am happy for you and your decision. I would have a complete break down if I lost three and a half years worth of work! I think the thing that bugs me about WordPress is finding Older posts on a blogger’s page. Maybe they have improved that and the two WP blogs I read haven’t updated.

Good luck with everything and especially your son’s wedding! I can’t wait to hear all the details! Best Wishes MOG! ;-)

  31. Anita @ Cedar Hill Ranch says:

I’ve dealt with the deleted blog, but it came back. I have my new wordpress site, but haven’t “moved” my blog there yet. Just putting it off, since I know it will be a bear from talking to Kristin. Hope it goes well, and you share your tips with us, so I can learn from your experience.

  32. Hi Susan! Good luck with the mood and hope all goes well. I would certainly hate to loose my blog but guess I’ll stay with Blogger.
I pray you find your shoes and best wishes for your son’s wedding! I saw at Rhoda’s blog where you and a few others were helping her out with painting. That was so nice considering all you have going on. You’re gonna need a vacation.
    Be a sweetie,
    shelia ;)

  33. Lizabeth says:

I wish you well with it. I know Debbie at Debbiedoo’s just did this not long ago and there were some issues with things not all transferring correctly or at all. My big objection to WordPress is having to fill in those blanks- name, blog name, email. I find it taxing to have to add more typing in when I’m moving around from blog to blog. That’s just my beef, but not a complaint!
I truly wish you well with it but most of all I wish you and your son a wonderful time at the wedding and that everything goes off beautifully!
    Take care,
    Liz

  34. Kelly Rowe says:

YAY and CONGRATS on your move! I just made the conversion a few weeks ago — you’ll LOVE IT!!! There is a learning curve, I even cried a few times, LOL. After all is said and done, it’s sooooo worth it.

Have fun, dance and laugh at the wedding… Hugs to you and Congratulations to your son :)

  35. Maria Elena says:

Oh, Susan, I know you have to be running like crazy! So much going on for you! Congratulations on your son’s wedding! What an exciting time! I am glad to hear you are making the move. Your blog is just too awesome to risk for anything to happen to it. It will all work out, you’ll see. Can’t wait to see the new look and features!

  36. ♥Sonny♥ says:

well I have to say I wish ya wouldnt but I understand. I just hope I can find you. I lost several of my favs to wordpress so they arent a pal of mine:)

  37. Kristin @ My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia says:

Good luck, you will love it althought the beginning is a little stressful, still trying to work out all my links. Can’t wait to hear how the move went. Good luck and have fun at the wedding
    XO
    Kristin

  38. Liz-Imageremix says:

Goodness, so much going on. Just enjoy the wedding. We’ll be waiting anxiously to see the new site when you get back!
    Liz

  39. I hope this is a good thing and that it will help some of the blogs that post on MM and tablescape open for me. I have tried everything I know to do and I have decided that it has to be where those blogs come from or blogger. I don’t know but I do hope this helps. Good luck.

  40. Big news indeed! Bless your week of preparation for the wedding!
The suitcases in the picture are the ones my mother had for years. So cool! Saw one in an antiques shop just this past weekend….

  41. Dear Susan, I’ve been gone this summer but I hope the move went well with as few hiccups as possible! I’m looking forward to playing catch-up and reading your posts that I’ve missed! Take care. xx

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
