You know you love books when you find yourself buying books about books. 🙂 I have quite a few books on the subject of collecting, storing and decorating with books and they are some of my absolute faves in my decor library.

- If I could only choose one thing to decorate with in my home, I would unequivocally choose books. The author of Books Make A Home apparently feels the same way because this book is filled with lots of wonderful pictures of books in living rooms, studies, kitchens, dining rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, stairways, halls, children’s room and yep, even in home libraries.
- This book is filled with book storage ideas for all styles of homes from modern to very traditional.
- Lots of unique ideas for ways to store and enjoy our books. I loved seeing all the creative places folks have found or created to squirrel away their books. I came away thinking we all have a lot more places to create storage for books in our home than we realize. A lot more! I especially loved some of the storage ideas for bedrooms.

I love books too, and I fear they are going the way of the horse and buggy. I hope not. I resisted buying a kindle for a long time because I just love the experience of feeling the book, turning the pages, even it’s ‘new book’ smell when curling up to read. I wonder what old J. Guttenburg would think of all these electronic devices. Well, he was an innovator in his day, so maybe he’d approve. As for me, give me a rainy day, a bookshelf full of my favorites and an endless supply of tea and I’m quite content. 🙂

I love books as well. There is nothing quite like the feel of a good book in your hand or the smell of the pages as they are turned. I have a Nook, but the only time I turn it on is to see if I have a new Sandra Lee magazine because it was cheaper to subscribe that way. In my mind, nothing can ever replace books. Plus, you can take a book anywhere, anytime and not worry about a low battery!
Debbie, I so agree! I love the feel of the pages as I turn them and love how they smell. I guess we love that smell because we associate it with memories of all the wonderful books we’re read. And no low battery…great point! Plus, you can’t break a book if you drop it. 🙂
A book about books–I started to chuckle but then realized, of course, that makes so much sense. The first to come up with that topic was probably long ago, but what is your oldest book on books? Especially regarding decorating.
Mia, I have a really fascinating book called “The Book On The Bookshelf” by Henry Petroski. It explains the history of books starting in early Roman days when they used scrolls, then moving on to the codex, which was the precursor to the book. It’s been several years since I read that book but it left a profound impact on me how rare and treasured books were at one time. They were hand scribed, no mass production so very few folks other than the super wealthy had books in those early days. We are sooo lucky today. I highly recommend that book if you love books and love learning about them. Doesn’t it make you wonder what we are doing/using today that will be ancient history in say 50 years. Wonder if one day folks will be saying, remember when folks sat and typed at computers. 🙂
Mia, I just googled what was the first decorating book and I’m not sure if this was the first one but The Decoration of Houses written by Edith Wharton in 1897 came up. Apparently she was NOT a fan of the Victorian style of interior design. 🙂
I so love books and just can’t imagine a world without them. Do you remember seeing the 1966 movie , Fahrenheit 451, where all books were outlawed? That would be terrible. I cherish my books; they are like old friends that I can visit whenever I wish, immerse myself in another time and place, or just look at beautiful pictures of places or decor (eye candy). Curled up with a good book, a cup of tea, and a roaring fire makes even the dreariest winter day delightful.
I never saw that movie, but I did hear about it. I can’t imagine such a world. There would be a revolt! I love the scene you painted, Bobbi!
Books do make a home. And NOT arranged by color. Or purchased by the lb for decor. You have them because you enjoy their contents. Over and over and over again.
