Note: This post would have been up yesterday but my blog had a bizarre hiccup and I lost over half the post after it was completely written. Argggh. I have the best hosting company, though and they did their best to help me retrieve the old post. We got back about half of it, so thankful for that. Tour Two Historical Homes & Guest Cottage oF a Beautiful Estate located on the Mobile Bay Alabama has … [Read more...]

Restored 1912 Cottage with Beadboard Walls and Gorgeous Lake Views

As I get ready for bed this evening, this is what the thermostat in the upstairs part of my home reads. That's a huge improvement over what it was all day yesterday and today, which was 90 degrees. It cooled down a bit after it rained today. Midday on Sunday, the upstairs A/C ceased to work, it just gave up the ghost! I called my heating and air company right away and the person who answered said the … [Read more...]

A Beautiful Beach House That Comes With Its Own Lighthouse!

Imagine buying a beach house and along with it you become part owner of your own lighthouse! See that little light house waaay out there, standing so bravely, a bright shining sentinel to all who sail by. Tour a Beautiful Victorian Home, Rebuilt After a Devastating Fire

Yesterday we toured the outside of this beautiful Victorian home belonging to Christy and Don. You may remember the original home was destroyed by fire after a lightning strike. It's really scary to think that lightning can cause such destruction, isn't it?   We'll start our tour here in the entry and a grand entry it is with a beautiful curving staircase. I think it may have been around … [Read more...]

A Beautiful Victorian Home Rises From The Ashes

Welcome to the 338th Metamorphosis Monday! In 2008, the unthinkable happened. A storm came and lightening reduced this beautiful Victorian home to charred rubble. The owners, Christy and Don, began a new, determined to rebuild their home following the design of the original house as their guide.   It took two full years to bring it back, but oh my gosh, is it wonderful!   I … [Read more...]

Like Living In a Novel

The listing described this home as "like living in a novel" and I couldn't agree more. It's over-the-top romantic and if it's this beautiful and enchanting in pictures, I can't imagine what it must be like in person. (Psst: Press Ctrl + 2-3 times on your keyboard to view the pictures in bigger form and Ctrl 0 (zero) once you're done.) Whoever built this home was definitely a romantic at heart to hang … [Read more...]

In The BNOTP Library: New Rooms for Old Houses

I must be an old soul because I've loved old homes for as long as I can remember. Historical homes are truly special and the author of this book, Frank Shirley, totally gets it. He speaks my language and I love the way he cares about the subject of renovating or adding on to an old home in a way that does no harm.   In the BNOTP Library: New Rooms for Old Houses: Beautiful Additions for the … [Read more...]

One Of My Favorite Homes Is No More

One of my favorite houses is this wonderful home that was once located on North Carolina's Inner Banks (River Dunes) in Oriental, North Carolina. It was designed by Historical Concepts, an Atlanta Architecture and Design firm, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Coastal Living magazine.   Historical Concepts was inspired by nineteenth century coastal design and envisioned a home that could … [Read more...]

In The BNOTP Library: Creating A New Old House

Old homes have so much character and charm. Unfortunately, they also require a lot of repairs and updating to make them comfortable for every day living. The book I'm featuring from my Decor library today offers an alternative for those of us who love old homes but not so much the expense of maintaining them.   In the BNOTP Library: Creating a New Old House: Yesterday's Character for Today's … [Read more...]

Is This Beach House New or Old?

This new "old" home idea is totally winning me over. I've always dreamed of living in an old home but sometimes while watching TV shows like This Old House, Rehab Addict and Love It or List It, I get a little nervous thinking about the upkeep and sometimes hidden problems found in old homes, things like knob and tube wiring and poor insulation. More and more I'm loving the idea of building a new "old" … [Read more...]

The House Behind The Beautiful Entrance

Wednesday it was 75° here, this morning I awoke to snow. Welcome to Georgia, a state where you can experience all four seasons in just 48 hours! As I type this, the snow covering the top of the screened porch this morning is long gone and we're back up to a balmy 47°. Remember this beautiful entry I shared a couple of days ago? It turns out, there's a gorgeous house attached to it. ;) I thought you might … [Read more...]

Tour Beautiful Westview, A Classic Greek Revival Designed For Today

Last night as I was working on this post, I kept thinking, "I know this house!" You know that feeling when you see someone in passing and you just know you've met them before. This morning as I continued working on this post, I decided to watch the video at the site where I found all the wonderful pictures I'm sharing today. … [Read more...]

In The BNOTP Library: The Great American House

Later today I'll be taking you on a tour of a beautiful "new" old house at Between Naps On The Porch. As I was working on that post last night, I kept thinking the house looked so familiar. Tour Sir John Richardson’s English Country House & Garden

Recently I stumbled across a short, little video online and I was smitten. It was an interview with Sir John Patrick Richardson, a British art historian who has written three serious tomes chronicling the life of Pablo Picasso whom he came to know very well when he moved to southern France (Provence) in 1952. At the age of 90, (WOW, 90!) he's currently working on his fourth and final Picasso biography. I'm … [Read more...]

Classic, Traditional Design…Greenwich Style

When you're standing in the grocery store or book store, flipping through all the latest decor/design magazines, do you sometimes wonder where they're hiding all the homes decorated in classic, traditional style? Shhh, don't tell anyone but just between you and me, I think I may know. They are hoarding them all up in Greenwich, Connecticut! They must be because I've discovered some real gems there in recent … [Read more...]

Beach Cottage Overflowing With Charm

Historical Concepts, an Atlanta Architecture and Design firm, designs homes that have the look and feel of an older or historic home but all their homes have the modern conveniences we need and love. In The BNOTP Library: Coming Home

For as long as I can remember, I've said to anyone who would listen, I'd love to live in an old house one day. I love the architecture and sometimes quirky personalities of older homes. I especially love their anything-but-cookie-cutter design. One friend used to always say to me, "Don't buy an old home, build one!" She would remind me if I built a new-old house, I could get all the features I wanted and … [Read more...]

In the BNOTP Library: Martha Stewart’s New Old House

Pssst: I've created a new category at the top of BNOTP called Library so if later you're trying to remember the name of a book I featured from my decor library, you'll be able to click on that category and find it there. I also dropped the rating scale because I realized that I'm only going to be sharing those books that I own and really like.  So if I'm sharing it here, you know it's one I … [Read more...]
