Christmas Table Setting with a Christmas Tree Theme

Welcome to the 275th Tablescape Thursday!

How’s your week going? Finishing up any last-minute Christmas shopping? I still have a little left to do so you know what I’ll be doing this weekend.

Next Week’s Tablescape Thursday:
Since next Thursday is the day after Christmas and a very busy time for all of us, if you don’t have a new table setting to link up, feel free to link up your favorite tablescape that you created during 2013. I know some folks will have new ones to share, but if you don’t go ahead and link up your fave that you created during the past year.

For this week’s Tablescape Thursday I set a table here in the breakfast room. It gets dark so early these days, it was already dark outside by the time I could take these photos. (Update,: Added in a couple of daylight pics today.)

I’m getting a lot of mileage out of my little Norfolk Pine. It was part of the centerpiece for last week’s table, it decorated the hutch on the porch for Met Monday’s Christmas Porch post and now it’s back as the centerpiece for this week’s table.

Christmas Table Setting

It was perfect for this week’s table because this table somehow ended up with a Christmas tree theme.

Christmas Table Setting with a Christmas Tree Napkin Fold

I’ve been hoping to use a Christmas Tree Napkin Fold in a table setting for several years now. This week I finally took time to learn how to make one.

Christmas Tablescape Table Setting with Plaid Dishware, Spode Christmas Tree Garland

I found a couple of YouTube tutorials online but I ended up kind of doing my own thing in order to get the look I wanted. One tutorial showed how to get a two-pattern look for your tree, but it required a napkin with a different pattern on each side. I didn’t have any napkins like that so I used two napkins in order to get both the solid red and the plaid showing in my fold.

Apparently, I changed something else too because in the folds I found online, the lower two sections of the tree ended up being the same color where my tree continued alternating the pattern all the way down, which I actually preferred.

Christmas Tree Napkin Fold

This fold will even stand up if you prefer to display it that way.  Update: You’ll find a tutorial for creating this Christmas tree napkin fold here: Make a Christmas Tree Napkin Fold for Your Christmas Table

Christmas Tree Napkin Fold for a Christmas Table Setting

I’m using my plaid dinner plates again this week but this week’s table is truly all about the Christmas tree. We have a Christmas tree centerpiece, a Christmas tree napkin fold and Christmas tree stemware, so what better salad plate to use than Spode, Christmas Tree Garland.

Christmas Table Setting Tablescape with Plaid Dishes and Spode Christmas Tree Garland

I love this pattern with the garland decorating the edges of the plate. This was another HomeGoods find this season. Unfortunately, I was only able to find 4 salad plates with the garland around the edge so I’m keeping my eye out for 4 more.

Spode Christmas Tree Garland in a Christmas Tablescape

I used two different patterns of stemware for this table setting. The iced beverage glass is Pfaltzgraff Winterberry and the wine glass is Spode, Christmas Tree.

A little candlelight…

The tree on the screened porch provided a nice bokeh effect for our background.

  1. Your Christmas table setting is gorgeous. I love the tree-shaped napkins and look forward to your tutorial on how to fold them. Today was a “wrapping” day for me but I hope to begin working on my Christmas table setting soon. Busy time of year for us all. Merry Christmas!
    Cheryl

  2. Susan, I adore your tree napkin! Looking forward to seeing your tutorial! Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas!

  3. Susan – you have designed something brilliant once again!! I love those tree napkin folds. Your table is wonderful. I am always a “sucker” for plaid. Spode Christmas Tree china is one of my obsessions and the pieces of Spode Christmas Garland that I own were always purchased at Macy’s. I am not sure, if Spode made it exclusively for them or not. I did not see any this year, so I checked on Replacements and they have plenty, but say that the pattern was discontinued in 2012. That explains why I did not see any this year, I guess! I hope you find more at Home Goods, but Replacements is always an option, if you do not. Merry Christmas and thank you for all of your wonderful and informative posts this year!! Diane

    • Yikes, I better get busy and find some soon then. Thanks for telling me, Diane! Yup, Replacements is a BNOTP Sponsor and def a great go-to source. Glad to know they have it! Merry Christmas to you and your family! XO

      • Susan, I am so glad to know that Replacements is your sponsor. I may be their very best customer – I have visited there twice and order from them all of the time! There are the very first “search” on my permanent search list – almost embarrassed to admit that – lol!!

      • Many years ago, I was looking around a thrift shop and found the Spode Christmas Tree two tiered cake stand….I paid $12!!! What a find.

  4. Your table is beautiful and I love a nicely folded napkin, so I can’t wait to give your tutorial a try.
    Merry Christmas

  5. I always love your tablescape posts, but I have a question. Do you remove your centerpiece when you have guests?

  6. Yes, PLEASE teach us how to make the Xmas tree napkins as you did it – they look adorable!

  7. WOW that is so cool! You always think of the neatest things! I love this table setting and have pinned it under my Christmas ideas board. Looking forward to the tutorial.

Have fun shopping. I am almost done too. Just a couple of small things left.

  8. LOVE LOVE your Christmas tree napkin fold and your decorated little Norfolk Island pine. Wishing you a wonderful Christmas.

  9. Love this, Susan! “Oh Christmas Tree” was the first theme I did in my daily Themes of Christmas series, and yours is the best interpretation I’ve seen! The folded napkin adds the perfect final touch. Nicely done! I, too, like the alternating patterns. 🙂 Best wishes to you and yours for a blessed and merry Christmas!

  10. Oh the napkin is simply wonderful!

  11. Susan,
Lovely as usual! I love the Christmas tree napkin fold. That one is new to me.
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
    Blessings

  12. The party is shaping up fast, can’t stop clicking my way into early pre-christmas inspiration!

  13. Your napkins couldn’t be cuter! They really are the icing on your sweet table! Next week sounds like fun, I am in the process of simplifying my to do list so I won’t be exhausted for the big day! Thanks for all the wonderful ideas, inspirations and posts throughout the year Susan, and have a very Merry Jolly Christmas!

  14. Have certainly picked up alot of creative ideas for the holidays from your blog. Look forward to each
and every post. Have a most blessed Christmas, and look forward to a wonderful 2014!

  15. Hi Susan! Another lovely table. We have a Norfolk Pine tree in our back yard and it’s taller than our 2 story house! 😉
Thank you so much for hosting your party all through these years. I remember your first tablescape on RMS and the word ‘tablescape’ ~ I’d never heard it until you used it. Merry Christmas, my friend.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia 😉

  16. Hi Susan,
Can you share where you found your utensils? My son is a red-lover and he would dig these year round — and we need new utensils!!
    Thanks,
    Alley

    • Hi Alley, I was just about to write that I can’t remember where I got it when it hit me, I found it in Pier 1 a few months ago. I never, ever think to look for flatware in there, usually end up buying it in Tuesday Morning or HomeGoods but they had it in early in the season, well before Thanksgiving. So you may still be able to locate some in a Pier 1. You can see that same pattern in a cream in this table setting: https://betweennapsontheporch.net/beach-tablescape-welcome-to-the-108th-tablescape-thursday/

      • Thanks Susan! I emailed my husband and asked him to pick up this flatware on his way home from work tonight. His response?

My concern is that getting replacements for the pattern will be impossible.
Plus long term the plastic handles are not going to survive the dishwasher.

Is he right? Are you handwashing this beautiful flatware? Will it last?

        Alley

        • I always hand-wash all my flatware except my stainless. I just don’t like putting it through the heat of the dishwasher. The twig flatware I purchased at the beginning of the year specifically states it should be hand-washed. So yeah, to keep the handles from cracking of fading, I think I would handwash it. An all stainless flatware works great for everyday use but the red is great for parties or dinners where you don’t mind doing a little hand-washing afterwards. That’s just my thoughts but maybe some of the readers who have this flatware will reply with how it’s held up for them.

  17. Another pretty table setting. I like the tree plates and the plaid together. But I just can’t get that plate with that bunny on it Out of my mind. Just tooooooo cute. Maybe next year sigh…… Thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas to you, your son, his lovely wife and that grand baby on the way.

    • Linda, I think that bunny plate captured more hearts than any china/dishware I have ever used in any table setting. 🙂 I hope Walmart brings them back again next year. Merry Christmas to you…thanks so much for those Christmas wishes. I’ll be seeing them soon…can’t wait!

  18. Your plaid plates are just to die for. I must add plaid to my collection 😉 Thank you for hosting all this inspiration. I will be enjoying all the links tonight with a glass of wine, after my wrapping.

  19. pam ~ crumety cottage says

Susan, you are so clever! I love that Christmas tree napkin fold! The way you managed to stagger the patterns like that is perfect. Can’t wait to see how you figured that one out! But if you’re too busy doing last minute shopping, don’t stress out over a tutorial. 🙂 And I also learned a new word today ~ bokeh. I always loved the bokeh effect, but didn’t even know it had it’s own name. Cool. B-)

Well, I don’t know how much posting you’ll have time to do over these next few days, so let me take the time now to wish you a very, Merry Christmas. 😀

  20. We must have been on the same wavelength because we both pulled out the tartan. Love yours and your chargers too. The napkins are wonderful! Thank you so much for hosting. I am always in awe of all the tablescapes you create.
    Big Texas Hugs,
    Susan and Bentley

  21. Another beautiful tablescape Susan. Whatever would we all do without your blog …..so many wonderful ideas. Thank you dear and have a blessed Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.

  22. What a casual & festive table setting! The folded napkin is certainly a conversation piece, not to mention adorable & I love the the snowflake bowl/pot the Xmas tree is in. Merry Christmas to you and yours!

  23. The Quintessential Magpie says

Susan, those trees are so cute. I love how you have the plaid juxtaposed with the red. I need to learn to do this!

I finally got my post linked up. Will try to do my visiting today. I have Charles coming to hang socks on my porches. It is going to look like NOLA out there with the bright colors, but that is the fun of this quirky house in St. Augustine. I can shake things up from my more traditional decorating.

Love you and hoping you have a by Merry Christmas!

  24. Susan,
I really love your table…and those napkins..wow You must have the patience of a saint.
We are having our family dinner this Sunday so I have a lot to do. enjoy your weekend and Merry Christmas…thanks for hosting..
    Love, Mona

  25. Susan, No thumbnail pic showed up for my link..I tried to do it again but I couldn’t..would like to delete it and link up again with a picture.. 🙁 how can I do that?
    Love, Mona

    • Hi Mona, I just went into InLinkz and added a photo from your post to your link. 🙂 When I set up InLinkz each week, I always check the little option in InLinkz that lets folks delete their own link if something doesn’t quite work right when you’re linking up. Do you by any chance see a little “x” by your link in the party? If so, you should be able to click that x (if you ever link up and something doesn’t quite go right) and the link should disappear so you can go back in an add it again. Only you can see the x beside your picture link so I can’t tell if it’s there. I hope InLinkz is working okay and that you can see the x beside your link. I’m glad you told me about the picture not showing because I can easily fix that anytime and it only takes me a second. If you don’t like the picture I chose, just look for the x beside your link (you probably have to be logged in to see it) and you can click it and re-add your link. Thanks!

  26. Susan, I love the way you folded the two napkins to make the Christmas tree. Those salad plates are beautiful, and they look great with the plaid plates. My table is also a Christmas tree theme. Thank you for hosting. laurie

  27. Susan, your table is beautiful, as always! I guess we were thinking alike with the tree napkin folds, and I promise I haven’t been spying into your windows and copying you! 😉 I love the two-tone napkins, too. Thanks for hosting, and Merry Christmas!

  28. Susan,
I love this table! Yes, your idea to use the little pine has been a good thing this season, it’s so versatile!!! It’s perfect for this table as well…your stemware and dishes are my favorite…oh and those napkins too…oh heck, it’s all my favorite!
As always, thanks so much for hosting!
    Merry Christmas!
    Sharlotte

  29. Susan, I am so glad that you FINALLY found time to learn how to make the tree napkin fold because it is adorable. You did marvelous, darling!!! You table settings are beautiful. FABBY

  35. What a bright and festive and cheerful tablescape. Thanks for hosting … all these years! It’s been awhile since I joined in on a Thursday. Have a wonderful Christmas!

  36. Hi there, Susan! I really love the mix of china patterns and how the napkin picks up the pattern of the dinner plate. This is a great tutorial for readers who feel a little uncomfortable with mixing and matching. Maybe now they will see that it’s not really that hard…you just have to eyeball it and feel it!

Brave you forging ahead with TWO napkins for the fold!!! Go on with your bad self!!! 🙂 It turned out great! And I for one could always use 2 napkins at dinner: one for my lap and one for my lips.

I hope that you have a wonderful Christmas. Enjoy!

  37. Week after week your tables are a delight, and I so appreciate the ideas you share. I’m crazy for napkin folds and can’t wait for your tutorial on this one. Somehow I think the little touches like napkins make any table special.

  38. Gorgeous table as always. I especially love the picture with the reflection of the Christmas tree! I will be on the lookout for that Christmas Tree Napkin Fold – love it!

  39. HOW CUTE IS THAT! I am going to give it a try and see what I come up with.

  40. Beautiful, Susan!!!

  41. I love the napkin fold, Susan. Beautiful table as usual. Have a Merry Christmas!….Christine

  42. Love this. I have so many family coming over this year, and this is a great idea. Love the different colors offsetting the background. Very nice!

  43. Oh Susan…those Christmas tree napkins are just delightful!! I was about to sew up some round shaped napkins so I could do that flip-flop fold to get the effect of a tree, but I like yours so much better.
The entire table is just delightful I hope you are able to find more of those pretty plates after the holiday.
Thank you for hosting TT again. I’m happy to be able to play with you, even if it is just a little spot of tea. What a crazy busy season!!

    • Thanks, Rett! Thanks for Christmas wishes, too! Hope you guys have a wonderful Christmas…bet you’ll be spending it with those sweet grandchildren. 🙂 I’ll try to get that tutorial up in the next few days. XO

  45. Hello Susan: Your tablescape is beautiful–what a pretty idea for the tree-shaped napkin fold. I also love the plaid plates as well. Thank you so much for hosting the party today.

  46. Hello dear Susan,
Holly Molly… the best ever Christmas setting you have had, as far as I remember. Just loving the very simple way on your table and that make sense and indeed up to be so much ELEGANT ever.

    Just loving it.

BTW, no… no shopping here and no Christmas gifts either. Big kiddo, don’t want have anything (he said) a dinner with us together will do and he work this Christmas eve (he is a chef of one of Sweden’s most well-known Bern’s Hotel). Lil kiddo is coming tomorrow from her Uni. dorm and she wishes to have an own design NIKE shoes (that’s cost fortune) but she is worth it and her wish come true.

I will have my shopping for Christmas food on Sunday. It is used that we always cook fresh. Swedish meatball and the Christmas ham are homemade with our rendition.

However, on New Year’s Eve it is my turn to gather my cousins and their respective family. We share every 4th year, in a way, we just can chillax and the inviters §:-) will work their butt’s off.

I will be coming back on Thursday and will show a bit off how D´Box celebrate its Christmas Eve (Swedish style).

Have an enjoyable day and weekend and Cyah soon.

    Hugs & greetings from D´Box.
    /CC girl

    • That’s sounds so yummy, CC! I can’t wait to see how you celebrate…be sure and send me a link or leave in a comment so I can find it! Merry Christmas to you and your dear family!

  47. Thanks again for hosting. I love your table and can’t wait for YOUR tutorial! I really like the Winterberry goblets, I will have to find some of them. I hope you find your dishes too. Wishing you and your family a very merry and blessed Christmas!!! XO

  49. Hi Susan,

with my one and only tablescape. Love your little tree, so precious all decorated.

able to put together with them. You have such great ideas!
    Have a great Christmas.
    Adam

Thank you for hosting! I am posting my outdoor tree you asked about this weekend, unless it blows down! 🙂
    Merry Christmas!

  52. What a beautiful table setting! Thank you for sharing. COuld you please tell me where you found those lovely tartan dinner plates? Or what the name is on the backside? I will try to find some-it’s a beautiful plaid!

    • Thanks, Pamela! I bought them online from Pottery Barn last year. The pattern was called Carson Plaid. They are probably hard to track down now but you may find them at some point on eBay or Replacements.com

  53. Wow, love that napkin fold Susan! Must try that. The tartan is lovely, my mother’s family tartan was Royal Stewart which looks very similar to your napkins.

  54. Esther George says

Hi Susan your table settings are always beautiful, thank you for sharing. I love the Norfolk Pine idea and the napkins….gorgeous. Wishing you a Very Merry Christmas. Regards Esther from Sydney.

  58. Juanita in OH says

God has definitely blessed us abundantly with all the cheer you send to us each day! You are an awesome and giving woman and I am profoundly happy that He sent me your way. Merry Christmas xoxoxoxo.

  59. Have you ever said where the rabbit you use on your table settings came from?

  60. Jeannine Tree says

I only discovered Pinterest and you this summer and have followed you ever since! But I hadn’t come across your O Christmas Tree table setting. Could you possibly say where you got the white china plate chargers with the cut-outs? I’ve been racking my brain (and google) to find those beauties!

    • Hi Jeannine! Thanks so much! Unfortunately, I don’t have great news about the chargers. I purchased those from Horchow in early 2008 (before I ever began blogging) to use for Christmas dinner parties and entertaining. In the years that followed, folks asked about those a good bit and periodically I would check Horchow to see if they had ever gotten them back in again…and they never did. I haven’t checked in years now, though. Since we are entering the holiday season, it might be a good time to check again. You may want to Google for “reticulated charger plates” or “pierced charger plates.” That’s probably the best phrases to find something similar. I wish Horchow would get them in again.

  61. Thanks so much for getting back to me. I really appreciate your thoroughness and professionalism. I was blown away by your blogs on building a screened porch. Everything detailed, sources, everything. Thanks again!
    Jeannine

  62. Roxanne Sauer says

    Hello:
I am having a major Christmas Party this year and was surfing and found your beautiful table settings. You talked about everything but the charger.. I fell in love.. That white (ceramic??) white weave charger is to die for.. I know this post was in 2013?? but do you know if they still make them? I will try and look on the internet – but I know I will not find them. If you have the store name? anything as to where I can get some for myself? I would be much beholding to you..
Thanks so much – Happy Holidays
    Roxanne Sauer
    Sandy, Utah

    • Unfortunately those chargers do not have a hallmark or brand name on them. I purchased them from Horchow online back in 2008 before I ever started blogging. I was entertaining a lot of back then. When they came, they were in plain boxes with no wording on them and I remember thinking at the time that they must have been made specifically for Horchow. I’m not sure where you would find them today, I’ve never seen them on Horchow again. I wish I had better news, Roxanne.

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
