In The BNOTP Library: English Decoration

I love English design! Long before I even knew what “style” or “look” fell under the moniker of English Design, I accidentally decorated my living room in an English/Hunt vibe. I decorated that room just buying what I loved, never thinking about a particular style or design.

It was actually a dearheart on Rate My Space (remember that site) who awoke me to the idea that my living room had somewhat of an English design look going on.

English Decoration by Ben Pentreath

3 Things I Like About This Book:

  • If you love English design, you’ll love this book. Pictures are beautiful and there are lots of them. The rooms are cozy and oh, so English!
  • This book is definitely not for the minimalist. The rooms are filled with interesting collections and the everyday “stuff” of life. In other words, they feel like real rooms where real people live…my favorite kind! I could just stare at the bookshelves/home libraries depicted throughout the book for hours…my favorite spaces for sure! There are plenty of lovely antiques all throughout, too!
  • Book is mainly composed of lots and lots of pictures of beautiful or intriguing spaces with detailed, personal descriptions of what we’re seeing in the rooms. So, there are no long wordy chapters, just tons of wonderful pictures with lengthy commentary.

  1. I love it too. You were very brave to submit to Rate My Space.

  2. Thanks for the tip! I love English country design. That has been the design path I have followed. It just exudes coziness to me.

  3. You are right Susan, your room is very English, besides the fact that you almost accidentally came up with that look! I too can relate to you, as I always liked the same style of décor and it turned out looking English, as our blog French friend, Martine Alyson says: Your house is very “BRITISH!” Thank you for the link, I will go there to visit too.
    Enjoy your weekend.

  4. Susan, this is a new book for me. I love the English look of your room, always have! I’m adding this title to my reading list. Thanks for the recommendation.

  5. I fell in love with Ben Pentreath and his blog about a year ago. If you like his book, do yourself a favor and read his blog…from the beginning. It’s wonderful!

  6. P.S. FYI, it appears you attribute authorship to Barbara B. Buchholz, not Ben Pentreath.

  7. Your room is lovely indeed! I have been in love with English design for as long as I can remember, and so I never mind a surfeit of excess:-)
I have ben’s book, and it is fabulous, I just leave it out so I can pick it up at odd moments if I need a ‘pick-me-up’
Ben also has a wonderful blog..

  8. It IS what WE LOVE!! franki
