The Holiday: Graham’s Charming Mill House

Four years ago I shared a tour of the adorable English cottage featured in the movie, The Holiday, starring Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Jack Black.

Rosehill Cottage stole the hearts of everyone who saw the movie. If you missed that tour, you’ll find it here: Tour Rosehill Cottage from the movie, The Holiday

Recently, a reader of BNOTP left this comment on The Holiday (Rosehill Cottage) tour post:

Dear Susan! I really adore this movie. I watch it every December. 🙂 Would you like to write a post about Graham’s Mill House from that movie? It would be interesting post! Greeting from Budapest, Hungary

Greetings to you, Imre and thanks so much for the suggestion!

Do you remember Graham’s (played by Jude Law) home, Mill House, in the movie? Have you ever wondered if it’s real and where it’s located? It is real and Mill House is located in Wonersh, a village in the Waverley district of Surrey, England. You can see pictures of the home here: Mill House Wonersh as seen in the movie, The Holiday. As with most movies, the interior scenes were filmed in a studio.

We get our first glimpse of Graham’s home when Amanda (played by Cameron Diaz) makes a surprise visit to see him. Charming and enchanting are two words that come to mind when we first see Graham’s home.

Amanda looks amazed as she enter’s Graham’s home for the first time. She’s thought all along that he was just a typical single guy and had no idea he was the father of two little girls, Sophie and Olivia.

Did Graham’s home surprise you, too? It really feels homey and cozy.

Since this movie takes place at Christmastime, there’s a Christmas tree here in the entrance.

As Amanda stands in the entry, she glances to her right and to her left where she catches glimpses of the kitchen…

…and the living room. You’ll notice Sophie and Olivia’s artwork throughout the home.

Toward the very end of the movie, Iris (played by Kate Winslet) and Miles (played by Jack Black) visit and we get a better view of the living room. There’s a little dining area in the corner.

The kitchen also has an old-fashioned kitchen table. Wonder what kind of stove that is…maybe an Aga?

I’m not showing the rooms in Graham’s home in the order we see them in the movie because I’m saving the cutest one for last.

At one point Amanda ends up in Graham’s study. It has a library feel with all the built-in bookshelves.  You can tell Graham is a devoted dad because his children’s art is everywhere, even here in his study.

Here’s a better view of the study, it feels masculine but still cozy.

The cutest room is the bedroom of Graham’s daughter’s, Sophie and Olivia. It’s a delightful surprise!

Sophie and Olivia can’t wait to show Amanda their room with its fairytale tent! The shape reminds me of Cinderella’s carriage. Does it make you think of a fairytale carriage, too?

The other side of the room looks just as you might expect the room of two little girls to look.

Let’s go inside the tent and check it out.

The movie ends and the credits begin to roll as we get once last glimpse of Graham’s home through the living room’s bay window. Such a nice way to end it. ~~~sigh~~~

  1. Yes, it’s an Aga. Beautiful things. I cuddle mine in the winter!
I love this film, the settings, and the two little girls are so adorable (‘You look like my Barbie’). I wouldn’t expect a man to think of putting swags on the staircase for Christmas. A tree and paper chains, but not swags. Luckily, although this film is set around Christmas, it’s not so Christmasy that we can’t watch it any other time. I love it and thank you for showing us around. xx

Every little girl should have such a room!!! Wouldn’t that be marvelous? My childhood room wasn’t anything like this room but it had a special feature that I loved and that was French doors that led to the front porch. The doors were rarely unlocked but I loved them and thought they were beautiful. Thanks for giving Mill House a second look. Loved it.

  3. I watch that movie and just wait for the faerytale tent scene. So magical and sweet.

  4. Thank-you so very much!
I loved waking up for the day to discover
this wonderful tour of Graham’s House!
    Again, Thanks so very much!
    🙂

  5. Yes, it’s an Aga! I stalk movies for Agas and could name most of them! It’s still on my dream wish but my sister got this same cream-colored one about 3 years ago so I can live vicariously.
Love this movie and love all the homes in it!

  6. Fabulous movie and enchanting homes and locations! Many of the movie locations and homes are real but the house in this post was replicated closer to where the movie shoot was. The original of this house was 4 and a half hours from London so it was too far for the cast and crew. So instead they built the exterior shell of this house on a lot near the town they were shooting other scenes in. The interiors of this house were all shot on sets in California. Google locations for this movie and you’ll find out the genius of these talented set decorators! They inspired all of us!! It felt so real! You want to believe it all! Still one of my favorite movies to watch!!

Hi Karen, Yes your absolutely right. I’ve just come across this page after watching the movie for the first time. My grandfather used to own the mill house and I had the privilege of spending weekends and summers there as a child. What you see in the film doesn’t do the property justice, it was out of this world. But to jump into your post you’re absolutely right all of the scenes that were shot inside of the mill house must have been shot elsewhere, the inside of the house was completely different. The entrance Cameron uses isn’t the front door, that entrance was never actually used and was just side entrance. If you walked through that door there would have been the side of an enormous fire place that was in the middle of the house. And to look left there wouldn’t have been a window there but a corridor to the office. Not to burst anybody’s bubble too much the property was exceptional and the kind of place childhood magic is made. From my grandad dressing up as the easter bunny and hiding chocolate bunnies in the garden. To playing hide and seek in the house to where you could not find each other!! Ever! Or picking fresh apples and pears form the orchard they had in the garden. Or the secret room that you’d never know was there. It was a pretty special place. I was very lucky. Thank you Susan for sharing this post, it brings back alot of memories 🙂 🙂

  7. That is my Favorite Movie. I love that you shared the tour today. There was not one part in it I would change. I can watch it anytime of the year. My Granddaughter has a copy. I must ask her to bring it. I fell in love with those
Two little angels . I loved their tent in the bedroom. I could listen to them talk all day. Yes, the house is gorgeous. I had no idea either it was so massive.
Now I want to watch it again soon. Thanks for sharing.
    Hugs Marg.

I LOVE the blue/white checkered plates and other pieces in the china cupboard. I was interested in the pieces she had on the shelves. What is that pattern? The English have a distinctive pattern called “Cornwall” which is blue and white stripe. Yet these are checkered. Any ideas? Thank you for the tour. I have never seen the movie. Guess I need to catch up after all your movie tours. Sherry

My comment comes from touring Rosehill, Amanda’s house…not Graham’s house.

Well Susan, you’ve worn me down. Just like with A Christmas Story, lol. I guess I’m now going to have to watch this movie. I’ve always resisted due to my dislike of 3 of the main actors, but you have featured Rose Cottage and now this house so much, I am just going to have to watch it! Haha.

And how wonderful your blog has even touched Imre in Budapest! (I have heard it’s pronounced, Buda-pesht.) I wonder if that’s true. Anyway, how exciting to have a blog that reaches people all around the world!

Alright, I’ve seen your pictures of Rose Cottage and now I’ve seen these pictures of Graham’s house … so on to my watch list it goes. 😀 Thanks.

Btw, I HAVE an Aga. And they are about the coziest, cutest stove/ovens out there. But oh my goodness, that thing is a pain in the aRse ( a nod to their British creation 😉 ) to clean. So anybody who covets one, please take comfort in that. 🙂 I wish I knew why they were so popular. Mine doesn’t have the big round things that seem to be standard over the pond. Mine had a gas top with 5 burners — 4 regular, plus a wok burner. Underneath it has a broiler on the upper left, under that, an oven that cooks either regularly or as convection. And on the right is a tall, narrow oven. I use that one most often. I call it the ‘bread oven,’ for some reason. 🙂 (Not that I cook a lot of bread in it.) I do like that one though because you can be cooking several things in it at the same time. All my Thanksgiving sides fit in there at once, if I want them too. Sweet potatoes, my extra dish of stuffing, green beans, and a dessert.

I would love it if AGA owners would chime in and tell us what they love about them so much. Maybe I’m missing something and I might learn to appreciate mine more. 😀

  12. My favourite movie. I have it saved on my pvr and watch it frequently, not just at Christmas. Of course, Jude Law has a lot to do with it!! 🙂
I think I know the script by heart. I can still hear the youngest girl’s sweet little voice with a lisp…”Amanda” as she asks her to go see their room. The tent is absolutely adorable and magical.
The house is homely and love the look of the AGA although I personally would be too scared to try it. My friend in England has one.

  13. The inside looks so warm & cozy…but the outside a little bleak. You wouldn’t know the inside was so bright & cheery. That’s not to say I don’t like outside, though! I’d love to live there, but then there are so many places you show here where I’d love to live! Thanks for sharing. 🙂

Hi Susan, I’m not a blogger, but have enjoyed your blog for quite a while not. In fact, you have been kind enough to answer my emails from time to time. I’m really confused now though because when I look for Monday or Thursday bloggers pictures and check out what they are doing, I don’t find them anymore. Just your info at the first of the blog and then when I scroll down everything has changed. What has changed? I so love seeing everything that everyone is doing on MM day and TT day, will they be back?
Wish I was more computer savvy, but you and the other ladies have made my weeks so much more enjoyable. Please let me know when you can.
    Thanks, Cherry Goodson, Texas

  15. I just love the homes in this movie . . . so charming and cozy. Are you aware that it was directed by Nancy Meyers who gave us the amazing beach home in Something’s Gotta Give? I would love to see what he real-life home looks like, wouldn’t you?

  16. I love English cottage decorating. Cozy rooms and of course books piled high. I do find Jude Law to be a hunk!

  17. Awwwwwwwww-one of my favs, too!! franki

  18. This is one of my all time favorite movies, I watch it often!! Love the actors in it, Cameron is one of my favs……….never cared for Jack Black much until this movie, he did an outstanding job!!!

All the homes are wonderful, esp. the cottage…….

  19. It is always so much fun going on home tours with you. Thank you for taking us along.

  20. Thank you, Susan! Such a good post! And thanks for the recipes, I’ll try them soon! Imre

  21. Nancy of Lake Stevens says

Susan, what a fun post. One thing struck me: did you notice the rolls of wrapping paper leaning into the corner in the picture looking into the kitchen? How real is that? Also, at the very end of the movie, when we are looking though the window watching everyone dance, if you listen very carefully you can hear Kate, I think, wishing all a Happy New Year.

  22. Hi again …my Granddaughter is getting ready to move into a new home and she was packing up their movies when she got my request …guess what? She packed a bunch for me. The Holiday was at the too. Yay! She knows how much I LoVe that movie…that being said….tonight in my house is Movie Night,,,yes, it’s coming on:)
