Kitchen Tweak: Updating my “It’s Complicated” Baking Center

Welcome to the 148th Metamorphosis Monday!

Hope you’ve been having a fabulous weekend!  Have you been shopping for groceries in preparation of Thanksgiving?  The stores have all been packed when I’ve been in.

I don’t have a big “Before and After” to share for this Met Monday–it’s more like a little tweak.  Last week I shared a change I made in my kitchen in this post: Baking Center in movie, It’s Complicated.  I loved the baking center/station we saw in our movie house tour of the house in the movie It’s Complicated.

Though I don’t have an area big enough to hold a whole bunch of glass canisters/jars like we saw in the movie…

…I did manage to squeeze in a couple over in one corner of the kitchen.

I wasn’t quite satisfied with the way that looked, so this week I changed things up a bit.  Do you see the difference?

I decided to add one more canister and I changed out the smaller one for a large one.  That’s sugar on the left, flour on the right and oatmeal in the center. These canisters are available for purchase here: Anchor Hocking Montana Jar

Baking Station in Kitchen

Now, I just needed three scoops.  I stopped by Williams-Sonoma, Bed, Bath and Beyond and several other stores near my home, but was unable to find what I needed.  I was searching for a 1-cup measuring “scoop” with graduated markings showing 1/4 cup, 1/3 cup, 3/4 cup and 1 cup, so whenever I scooped out sugar, flour or oatmeal, I could measure it at the same time.  I found plenty of measuring cups but they were all pretty large–a little too large to comfortably pull in and out of the canisters.

After searching pretty extensively online, I found the Nuscup, made in Switzerland.  Have you ever seen these?  It’s pretty cool.

They were a bit pricey at $12-14 each.  So I searched around online and found them at the Sierra Trading Post for only  $4.76 each.  On that site, they were available in three colors.  I went with the white accented with green.  Shipping was reasonable at $5.95 for all three scoops.  I hope they work as well as they appear to in the video.  You just slide the little button and the cup adjusts to hold the amount you need.

The newly added center canister holds my favorite brand of oatmeal.  Have you ever tried the Trader Joe’s brand?  It  is sooo good!  It’s 100% whole grain oats and is gluten, wheat and dairy free for those who need that.  Of course, it doesn’t have any artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.  It’s definitely the best tasting oatmeal I’ve ever eaten.  I add just a little touch of unsulfured blackstrap molasses. Molasses is really good for you because it’s a great source of iron, magnesium, calcium and potassium.  I love the way it tastes, too.

So, that’s my kitchen tweak.  Looking forward to all the fabulous Before and Afters for this Met Monday!

  11. Seeing the "It's Complicated" kitchen was a huge "OOOOOhhhhhh" and your kitchen, and home elicits the same response. Your new baking center promises delights and simply those promises are exciting. Suggestion: Why don't you host a conference for Between Naps followers so that we can meet one another face to face. This could be an annual event. Think about it! I'll help you organize if you want…. Happy, joyful Thanksgiving to you and family. I hope your table has many filled chairs. Joy! ~CJ

  12. The large ones together look more symmetrical. Although I'm not a stickler for symmetry, I do love the balanced look of the three canisters.

Susan, I quickly ran over to Sierra Trading Post's site and bought three of the scoops. Great Christmas gifts for my 2 daughters and one for me. Thanks for sharing.

  13. I love your canisters! I like the three larger canisters together like that. I think Bed Bath and Beyond has those kind of measuring cups you are looking for. Thanks for hosting!!

  14. I love your baking center now that you have three, same-size canisters. It looks fantastic!

I've linked a post about preparing for my husband's family – 43 members are coming to our house for Thanksgiving. We provide the turkey and drinks, they bring the rest of the food – and it's always delish!

    Hugs,
    Mary

Hi Donna, Glad you saw it! Please email me at betweennapsontheporchatgmaildotcom and I'll forward your email to The Charmed Life. Thanks!

  28. Susan ,forgive me for not focusing on your revised canister arrangement, which is lovely. I spotted the Spode turkey plate that appeared on the counter in the "before" picture and realized that we share still another "like". I have the Spode plates and love using them at Thanksgiving. In fact, I just finished washing them after a lovely family dinner. Last week it was the patchwork wreath, earlier it was the idea photo of pumpkin topiaries with lights inside, then it was the decoupage pumpkins, and now the Spode turkey plates. What fun. Thank you for sharing. MM

I do like the look of these canisters best. I looked at the canisters at Target, but they are a little too large for my kitchen. Love the idea of a baking center.

  48. Love these posts on the baking center redo.
You might consider putting the flour canister next to the stove instead of the sugar. Put the sugar by the mixer. Why? It’s because of the staircase graduating height pattern of decorating rules. You’ll likely always have more sugar in that jar and the least in the flour jar, so the tallest height by the mixer brings the eye UP the line from the lowest point of interest–the stove.
    Just a thought.
