A Pancake Breakfast On The Porch

Welcome to the 322nd Tablescape Thursday!

A couple of years ago I was in Marshall’s and came across these cute, little individual milk bottles for $3 each. An idea instantly popped into my head. Wouldn’t it be fun to use them in a breakfast table setting. I could fill each one with milk for cereal or with a preferred beverage then each person would feel extra spoiled having their own little milk bottle for refills during their meal.

There was just one problem, there were only three bottles. I purchased those three and then periodically checked on eBay hoping to find a few more. I eventually found one more on eBay, but I was really hoping to find enough for six place settings.

Earlier this summer I stopped by Marshalls and was surprised to find they had gotten three more in! Even though I just needed two to complete my six place settings, I purchased all three since it’s always good to have a spare for breakage.

Pancake Breakfast Table Setting, Autumn on the Porch

Do you remember Mr. Rooster? I purchased him a year or two ago and when he arrived, his tale was broken in several places. Unfortunately, the company where I purchased him didn’t have anymore. They didn’t want to pay to have Mr. Rooster shipped back. I hated to just toss him so I repaired his tale as best I could. You’ll find that repair post here: Best Way To Repair A Broken Ceramic Piece

The Tall Centerpiece Question
I always get questions whenever I use a tall centerpiece in a table setting, so I’ll go ahead and share what I’ve always done and what I’ve also read in design and table etiquette books. Basically, it goes like this: Use the biggest, hugest, tallest centerpiece in the whole wide world that you can possibly find, to your heart’s content. Once you and your guests start to sit down for the meal, move the centerpiece to a nearby sideboard or wherever you wish IF it will interfere with the conversation or view.

Don’t ever be afraid to set a beautiful table with a tall centerpiece. Your guests will love the impact and drama a tall centerpiece creates and it can always be moved if needed.

Fall Dining With Rooster Dishes and Rooster Centerpiece

Without napkins…

Breakfast Table Setting On The Porch

The dishware for this table setting is “Fall Rooster” by Maxcera, another Marshall’s find back in 2011 for just $2.00 a plate. They only had three of the rooster salad plates so I mixed in some of my sunflower plates, too. I love how they look with the dinner plate since it has sunflowers on it, as well.

Rooster Dishware For a Breakfast Tablescape

The milk bottles needed a little autumn dressing. I hot glued a piece of burlap ribbon around them, layering a piece of plaid ribbon in fall colors on top. The ribbon isn’t hot glued to the bottle, it’s just hot glued to itself. I put a drop of glue under the top ribbon and tucked a faux fall leaf underneath. Wouldn’t it be neat to tuck a real fall leaf in there if this table were actually being use…love that idea!

There are so many things one could do with these little milk bottles. Using chalkboard paint, a little area could be painted, then the name of each person could be written on the bottle at each meal. These would be so easy to dress up for any season or holiday by just tying a colorful ribbon around the top of the bottle.

Rooster Dishware Plates

Each place setting also has its own little maple leaf shaped bottle filled with maple syrup from Vermont. Yum! Since these little bottles are glass, it would be easy to wash them out once they are empty and refill them when a special breakfast is planned. I just realized I left off the napkins. Ha! It was starting to get dark even before I began taking pictures, so I guess I forgot in my rush. It gets dark so early now. I’ll try to add some napkins to this table today, take a picture and add it to the post.

Breakfast On The Porch

Okay, here’s our fall breakfast table with napkins. Much better. I’m messy, I need napkins! 🙂

The rooster glasses are from Old Time Pottery, 3-4 years ago. Flatware is from Pier 1 a year or so ago.

You’ll need to include a link in your post back to the party to link up and participate. That’s so visitors to your blog will be able to find the party and the other Tablescape Thursday participants. Requiring a link back also prevents businesses from linking up to sell their products. (Yep, that really happens, unfortunately.)

If you would like to use the Tablescape Thursday logo button in your post, just copy and paste it to your computer and upload it to your post as you would any photo.

Please, don’t add your post name/blog name ALL IN CAPS…it tends to create big spaces between the rows of links.

I’ve got the same rooster today on my blog and my table. I bought him in 2006 at a discount store and carried him home on my lap! I love your philosophy of tall centerpieces. Your mix of patterns is genius, and the milk bottles are adorable and so versatile. What a beautiful table!

    • I LOVE your rooster, Michael! He was the inspiration for when I purchased this one. He’s is stunning in the middle of your beautiful tables!

      • Rattlebridge Farm says

My husband bought me a smaller green-crackled rooster a few years ago, and I need to put him (the roo, not the dh, lol) in a tablescape soon.
        I love your milk cartons!

  2. Beautiful post! Love all your rooster plates! I haven’t been posting for awhile, life got in the way! Nice to be able to share again. Love that you do this Susan! Thank you!

  3. Enjoyed breakfast with you! Thank you for the party! Have a wonder-filled weekend! Blessings, Pam

  4. I love, love, love your beautiful rooster! He’s quite an eye-catcher. Thank you for hosting!

  5. This is such a great morning table Susan, your rooster is stunning! [naturally you fixed it 🙂 ] I agree with the tall centerpieces, go dramatic, and move for dining~ roosters/chics make such a happy statement on dishware and yours is so cute and bright. The milk bottles just make the whole thing, it’s so exciting to be on the hunt and find what you need! Thanks for the party, I guess we’ll be lighting fires in the south this weekend, brrrr…

  6. Love your “lo cal” pancake breakfast table! Mr. Rooster looks right in his element standing amont the sunflowers! Maxcera has some of the cutest designs don’t they! Love the milk bottles- thats’ so weird that you found more of them so many years later. I just found some small milk like bottles at Michaels but they are closer to the size that we had as kids in school (the good ‘ole days) LOL… I’m sure there are many that have no clue what I’m talking about!

  7. Great idea for the milk bottles! I like that you showed you can mix and match plates when you don’t have enough and the sunflower ones DO go perfectly with the rooster ones. Thanks for hosting!

    • Thanks, Lori! I think it actually looks a lot more interesting when we do mix and match. I used to never buy anything unless I could find a full set…now I don’t let that worry me since it’s so much fun to mix it all up. 🙂

  8. Hi, Susan. What a wonderful way this would be to start a day! This table is colorful, happy and welcoming!! I love all your patterns, and the roosters and milk bottles really do give that sense of a country breakfast. I’ll be right there………..Rosie

  9. Regality (aka The Quing) says

Great table. I collect rooster/chicken dishes, so I checked Replacements to see if they had any of your pattern. Turned out that there’s a total of one square plate, for $15.99! Er…no thanks! *L*

Love the milk bottles and the leaf bottles. Very clever.

  10. Beautiful table and I *love* those maple leaf syrup bottles. I’ll have to keep an eye out for those.

  11. This is so cute! I really like the milk bottles with the ribbon trim and leaf. You always come up with such unique things! Glad I’m not the only one who forgets things before I take the pictures! LOL!

    Thanks for hosting.

    Katherine

    • I’m bad to do that but I normally remember it at some point. Not this time! I must have liked those rooster plates a lot yesterday and didn’t want to cover them up. lol I think that was my last table on the porch…getting too cold now. Have a great weekend, Katherine…it’s almost here!

  12. What a cute idea Susan, love the bottles and the way you dressed them.
Hurry up with the pancakes, I have to go out and I am hungry!! 🙂
Thanks for hosting yet another creative tablescape!

  13. Oh Susan,
your Pancake breakfast with maple syrup sounds soooo “AMERICANO” to me, and I love, love, love it! 🙂
Also love those plates and glasses and those milk bottles!
I’ve never seen milk bottles made of (opaque) milk glass before! (That sounds a little weird, doesn’t it?) lol
And what to say about that Mr. Rooster’s imposing presence on your table? He is very impressive and beautiful! And those little leaf shaped bottles are sooo cute, I’d have them displayed all year in my kitchen hutch! 🙂
    ~Hugs to you~
    Cecilia

    • Those milk bottles are a little different, aren’t they. I think they’ll be pretty in a summer setting sometime since they’re white. Cecilia, if you get a chance to try real maple syrup, do it! I just started using it instead of the regular ol stuff from the store and it’s so much better!

  14. Oh Susan, I am pea green with envy for those rooster plates! The adorable milk bottles, the glasses, and the rooster & sunflower plates combine for a charming sunny breakfast table. Simply lovely! I will be looking for the Maxcera Fall rooster plates to add to my collection of rooster plates (oh my, more plates). Thank you for hosting, I hope to have a post later today.

  15. pam ~ crumpety cottage says

Speaking of pancakes, I recently discovered THE most delicious pancake mix in the world. Possibly the entire universe. Yeah, I’m pretty sure it is. It’s Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Pancake and Waffle Mix. O Mama is it good! I never would have guessed I could like pancakes that much. I hope you get to try it.

Susan, those plates are so pretty and ‘cheery’ looking. What a great table to wake up to! I love those little personal maple syrup bottles. Your milk bottles remind me of a recent trip to an Amish grocer where I got a bottle of fresh milk (clear though.) Yum. It made me long for the days when you could get your butter and milk delivered fresh. Sigh.

Now I’m craving orange juice … for some strange reason. 🙂

  16. Susan ~ That is too cute! But you have really blown my healthy eating for today. Just talking about the pancakes has me really wanting them! Maybe with a little bacon on the side.

  17. You did a really good job with repairing Mr. Rooster’s tail, because there are no “telltale” signs that it was ever broken! 🙂

You got a great deal on the plates. I don’t remember seeing those, and I’m sure I would have swooped ’em up if I had. They’re colorful and playful…just what we need to celebrate fall!

EXCELLENT find on the milk bottles! Congrats on that!!! I know you will find many, many uses for those in future posts and totally get your money’s worth. Those are the kinds of purchases I most treasure!

I have a single bottle of that maple syrup in the leaf bottle. I don’t know why we haven’t eaten it! I’m sure it’s got to taste better than the stuff I buy at Costco. (Sorry, Mrs. Butterworth!)

I’m really glad that you reiterated the point about using large, impactful centerpieces. I made that same point this past weekend in a tablescaping workshop I presented at a local fundraiser. You really want your guests to be wowed when they walk in or past the dining room! It can always be relocated once guests are about to be seated. My husband usually takes care of that toward the end of the cocktail hour. It’s all good!

Have a great weekend! I’m sure it’s MUCH warmer there than it is here. We have unseasonably frigid temps that have killed everything off for good…including my faith in 50 degree Novembers!

    • Thanks, Alycia! I tell ya, I was just out there taking some pics with napkins and it’s freezing out now. My outdoor thermostat says it’s 44 degrees which is way too cold for this girl. I’m so glad you agree on the centerpiece, too. Can you imagine if we limited ourselves always to short floral arrangements. That would be the pits wouldn’t it? Go big or go home, right? 😉

      • Amen, sister! Go big or go home is exactly right!!! And 44 degrees? C’mon…we’re still in shorts in 44 degree weather! 🙂 But I understand…we are much more acclimated. Actually, I’m still wearing summer pajamas despite it getting down into the low 20s at night!

        Have a great weekend!

  18. Such an inviting table for a weekend Fall breakfast. The milk bottles are sweet! I think I told you about a product called zap a crack. A blogger friend used it to reassemble a badly damaged bunny that got smashed in the mail.
    Thanks for hosting, Susan!

  19. Debbie Hanna says

I love all of it. The bottles are just adorable. I want some. lol You find the cutest things and at good prices.

  20. Since it is snowing here as I am linking up to your party, I find your porch so bright and cheery in wonderful fall color! I’m glad you found the rest of your milk bottles, it is always a funny feeling of euphoria when I find something I have been looking for!! It’s the little things in life we find fun!
    Thanks for hosting!

  21. I never thought to use those syrup bottles in this way Susan! Brilliant!! I see them all the time and in fact have purchased them in the past (I use maple syrup nearly every morning in my oatmeal) but always just throw them out when they’re empty. No more of that, I can assure you ;).

Thanks for hosting and enjoy your weekend! (I hear it’s getting chilly in Georgia)

  22. I love the roosters, Susan…so frenchy! Thanks for hosting! Have a great weekend!…hugs…Debbie

  23. Cock-a-doodle-doo! This is certainly a fun table for breakfast. I love the individual leaf shaped bottles of maple syrup. I’d get up early for breakfast of pancakes at this pretty table!

  24. Such a fun and beautiful table. Love your plates and rooster. Very cheery.

  25. Love, love that rooster. Oh, now I want some sort of statement centerpiece too. And one for the entry cabinet, and one for sofa table, and one for…
    Thanks, Susan.

  26. Susan, thanks for sharing a really pretty table. I love the dishes, and I love roosters. I always get great ideas from your blog. Have a great weekend.

  27. Linda Palmer says

Hi, Susan: I love roosters and chickens and this tablescape. The little bottles of maple syrup are a cute (and tasty!) touch BUT—I scrolled through all the pictures and never saw the pancakes. Where are they? I love pancakes, too! 🙂 Linda

  28. Well, I sure could go for a nice WARM pancake breakfast since it is snowing here!!! Good grief! But it won’t last, it’s just a tease. Love Mr. Roo and your dishes are great! I’m going to look for the maple leaf bottles of syrup, too cute!! Thanks for sharing all that you do, Susan. Wishing you a happy and blessed Thanksgiving. XO

  29. Those “little syrup bottles”…I do that TOO!! My hubby just asked, “but, does she heat them up…” 🙂 Just something I do………. 🙂 franki

    • Franki, I never thought of that…that’s a genius idea, though! How do you heat them? Do you place them in really hot water?

      • Why, yes I do…while the bacon is sizzlin, and flapjacks are flippin…cake pan in the oven on warm (to heat the pancake platter, etc.) with the syrup lids off… 🙂 fmp

  30. Very pretty and such a happy table Susan with such an adorable china.
I love those maple syrup bottles, they’re so cute to keep. If they are made of porcelain you can heat them even in the microwave, I know from hubby because he had a Ceramic factory. Really hot water may crack them.
Thank you for hosting Susan. Sorry I’m late. Have a great weekend.

  31. Lovely Mr Rooster and he looks very handsome with his tail complete, I love the little milk bottles, I have seen similar in the shops here and wondered about buying some for my Bed & Breakfast, I thought they would look cute along with the white dishes I use when guests are staying. And as for pancakes, yum, my granddaughters like me to make them when they visit,
    Hello from Ann in Scotland

  32. Love the autumnal colors and the sunflower plates with the rooster dinnerware. Those milk bottle are so cute and what a creative idea!

  33. Susan, the colors of the Pancake Breakfast are stunning and vibrant. The details add so much to the table and would add to the conversation of the guests. I do remember the cute little birdies! I have photos of your tables stored in my “Pictures”.
