Warm, Cozy Escapes

It’s cold out and I’m craving warmth. All I can think about these days are soft, merino-wool socks, cozy cable-knit sweaters, warm wool throws, libraries with fires blazing in the fireplace, flannel sheets, down duvets, hot chocolate by the fire and great books for reading on those way-too-cold nights.

When fall comes around, I want to spend my days in rooms like Ralph Lauren’s Bedford home library. I’m not sure anyone does cozy better than Ralph Lauren!

I love the velvet drapes and the beautiful antique Argand brass lamp. The pillows are all made from antique fabrics. Notice how well tartan goes with paisley. Filing that idea away as I work on my winter bedroom.

Even the billiard room in RL’s Bedford home feels warm and cozy with paneled walls, deep, blue-velvet sofa, Persian rug and Blackwatch tartan pillows and throw. Notice how the mix of velvet with well-worn leather pieces like the chairs. Love the contrast!

Another room that feels wonderfully cozy this time of year is the library in this New Orleans French Quarter home once belonging to General Kemper and Leila Williams. (Take the full tour of their home here: The French Quarter Home of General L. Kemper & Leila Williams )

Julio’s wonderful lodge on the Russian River would be the perfect spot to hibernate away for the winter.

I’m seriously crushing on the tartan draperies. I’m going to have to find a spot in my home for some tartan curtains. Maybe my den/living room would be a good spot. Tour Julio’s cozy cabin here: Cabin Renovation and Restoration

Remember Designer Gail Claridge’s beautiful Country Meadow equestrian ranch?

The bedrooms are so cozy with their paneled walls and beautiful bedding. Actually, Gail’s whole home is warm and inviting. Hard to believe it was once a barn! Tour Gail’s Claridge’s home here: Gail Claridge’s Country Meadow Equestrian Ranch

I usually think of gray as feeling cold but the camel-colored sofa really adds warmth to this comfy library.

After a day of skiing, this wonderful retreat located in the Adirondack Mountains would be a great place to warm up.

At the end of the day, I’m pretty happy just curling up with some hot tea or hot chocolate in front of the fire.

Did I miss your Master Bedroom reveal with your new Tartan coverlet? I am sure it will be lovely for the Winter season.
Love seeing all of your projects and home decor pics. Thanks for sharing.

    • Thanks, Carolyn! No, it’s not quite ready yet. I’m getting estimates right now for the bedskirt. I’m looking forward to sharing it, though…may be December though before it’s ready.

  2. Susan, I would love to have a room just like the RL home library. I would edit out some things, but love the look of the sofa and pillows. I added two RL tartan pillows to our leather wing back chairs in our living room. Not 100% sure they work in our living room, but trying them out. Let me know your thoughts. There is a photo posted on my current post.
Thanks for sharing the cozy inspiration.

    • Love your pillows, Sarah! You can never got wrong with RL, can you? 🙂

      • Thanks, Susan. I appreciate you taking a look and offering feedback. I couldn’t get a good photo of the room. Need to work on the lighting in the room. It’s on our list. ‘-)
Cold and wet here so I’m cozied up by the fire.
        Happy Weekend!

  3. I would love to be in Ralph Lauren’s library at the moment, it is at freezing level here and two days ago, it went down to 5 below.
I also notice in that room, two of my favourite actor/dancers, dancing *cheek to cheek* on the t.v. You have to love Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers!!
Why am I craving hot chocolate 🙂

    • Fred and Ginger are definitely a classic. I love that they chose to put one of their old movies on for the picture of that beautiful room. I hope you got your hot chocolate, Megan!

  4. Yes! Those blue velvet sofas are heavenly! And the bookcases actually hold books instead of ‘stuff’! I am a Lauren lover too.

Ralph Lauren certainly knows his way around cozy. *sigh* And so does Julio! Love his place as well. AND Gail Claridge’s bedrooms are magnificently cozy. I can just imagine getting out of bed on a frosty morning in one of her pretty bedrooms.

Susan, I like the idea of the Tartan curtains for your living room!! That might be just the ticket. You’ve been wanting curtains in there anyway and that room is so cozy and it seems they would feel right at home there.

Oh gosh, speaking of cozy, I was out wandering some shops today and found the coziest country estate dinnerware. It’s by Juliska, and it’s called Country Estate, lol. It comes in different colors but I like the red on white for Christmas. Look it up on the Juliska website and see what you think. I was thinking about getting a silver Wassail bowl and when I saw the large punch bowl in this pattern I thought, that would work! Unfortunately, it was $400. Yikes.

Hee .. cozy posts, cozy pictures, cozy Christmas projects. 😀 Yay.

    • Thanks, Pam! Yeah, I’m thinking about the tartan for that room. I think it would look great with the paneling. It’s so cold her right now…hope you are staying warm!

  6. Charles Faudree always did wonderfully cozy room, as well. I seem to recall either his study or Master Bedroom being plaid-ish, with a Napoleon Bonaprte themed bathroom!

Raloh Lauren really has the English Country look down pat, and I could move right in to any one of those rooms!

    • Oh, Tammy…I should have included one of his wonderful rooms. Do you remember his cabin that was featured in Traditional Home Magazine? I love that feature! I still have all those old magazine and still love looking through them, especially the issues that featured his beautiful work and his beautiful home.

  7. OK, I have just about everything on your list: cold (30 degrees) weather, warm socks, sweater, and throw, some hot chocolate by the fire, duvet…
I just needed a bunch of cozy rooms to savor, so thanks for collecting them and sharing, especially tonight!

  8. I am having serious envy pangs over these beautiful red rooms. So warm and cozy!

  9. Thanks for sharing these wonderful glimpses of RL’s perfect style. He is a classic and though he makes changes, he never strays from that ever lasting appeal.

  10. My favorite cozy spot is right where I am now..in my warm, wondergul bed! And I’ve got some hot chocolate here too! Mmmmm. Comfort! Love this post!

Boy, I just woke and the weather has really turned cold. We even got a light dusting of snow yesterday which is so early in the season for us…think we’re in for a cold one this winter. Br-r-r-r! Looking at the rooms made me feel so warm ans relaxed because that is the style I love the most. The RL library, Julio’s cabin, and Gail Claridge barn- turned- gorgeous- home are my favorites. I’ll think on them while I’m out shopping on this cold day. Have a good one.

  12. It’s very cold in New Jersey this morning so this is the perfect post for me to read today! Those rooms are so inviting and you’re right, no one does warm and cozy like Ralph Lauren!

  13. Beautiful rooms! I agree, nobody does it like Ralph! The Beaux Mondes room is fantastic! Thank you for sharing….lovely tea too.

If someone told me that I had only one style from which to choose, and I had to live with it for the rest of my life, it would be this. I have loved RLL forever, in interior design and in the way I dress. To me, he’s perfect; always in exquisite taste. Thanks once again, Susan, for a beautiful post.

  15. Not that I’m bragging, but I’m having a cold Coke while reading your blog.
Life is good here in sunny Baja, Mexico. Even though we need rain badly, it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen soon. I love your beautiful room, those tartans, those colors! And I am so happy with your decision.

    • Bertha, send some sunny weather here, please!!! 🙂 Thanks…I love how it’s looking so far. I can’t wait to share it once I have a bedskirt.

  16. Ralph Lauren…simply, the master. franki
