A Screened Porch For Ocean Breezes

What better place to have a screened-in porch than at the beach! When Carla and her hubby were building their beach home, Carla came across BNOTP. Carla said, “We just finished our house at the beach last summer. While we were building, I found your blog, and you convinced me that we needed to make our back porch bigger. I am SO glad we did!”

Screened Porch Addition

I asked Carla for a tour of her wonderful screened porch and she graciously shared the following details:

“We decided on a screened porch for several reasons. We have another home with a screened porch that we really enjoy. This porch at the beach allows us to spend time outdoors in a coastal environment without having to deal with the gnats, mosquitos, and other creatures that inhabit South Georgia.

We were planning a porch about 8 ft. deep but then I ran across one of your blog posts that recommended making a screened porch as deep as possible. The result is that our porch is 12 ft. deep, and would have been even a little deeper if not for our limited lot size.”

“For the porch floor we chose Tigerwood, which is a very hard wood from a renewable source in Brazil. The fireplace and the daybed swing are my favorite things about this porch.”

Brick Fireplace for Screened Porch

“The fireplace is made from antique bricks ( circa late 1800s) from an old textile mill in Valdosta. We plan on spending some chilly evenings in front of it this winter!”

“The swing is a great place to sit and read or take a nap on a lazy afternoon.”

Dining Area on Screened Porch

“We found the old locker at a consignment shop in Savannah. We plan to use it to store beach essentials like sunscreen, beach toys for the grandchildren, etc…”

Storage on Screened Porch

“I found the old 1950s vintage washtub on Etsy, and we drop our sandy flip-flops in there before entering the house.”

Remove Your Shoes Sign

Carla, thanks so much for this wonderful tour. I think I caught sight of the ocean in one the pictures. The ocean breezes must feel wonderful from your beautiful porch!

Nice porch! Love the touches of using older things; the old bricks, the old locker, and the old washtub for the sandy sandals-great idea! Nice post, as usual.

  3. Lovely porch and the ocean too!! Lucky Carla!! Thank you for sharing!
The song *I do like to be beside the seaside* is now running through my head!!! 🙂

I feel as if I have seen Carla’s house. Carla, are you on one of the islands off of Savannah, or Tybee? I am not a stalker, LOL, just curious. 😉

What a great idea for the fireplace AND the beautiful swing/bed. I would never leave the porch if I had one of those!

All your “finds” to furnish your porch are so cute, and I think I need to buy one of those big wash tubs to get everyone to drop their shoes before coming in my house!

Thanks for showing another beautiful porch idea!

  5. No, Mary, our house is on St. Simons Island off the coast of Brunswick, GA.

  6. I love that porch – and how smart to include a fireplace. The locker is the biggest surprise though and now I want one.

  7. As always, I love seeing pictures of these pretty porches. They are all unique and lovely!!

  8. Favorite place to be!! franki

Carla, I am so glad you found BNOTP before you built yours and took the advice to make it deeper. I am sure that makes it’s much more useable and enjoyable for you. (I have porch envy! I so want a screened porch. Even my hubby does, lol. We may have to move to get it.) Very pretty and I appreciate that you shared it with Susan. I think I would spend every available minute there. Of course, this is just your vacation home, so it probably doesn’t get used all that much. 🙂 Still, I’m sure you enjoy it like crazy when you’re there. Thanks, Susan, for sharing.
