A Mary Frances Bag

Yep, you heard right…it’s snowing in Georgia. All you folks in the Northeast are laughing about right now, because this is nothing compared to what you’ve seen this winter.

I am TOTALLY a warm, weather kind of girl…but I do see the beauty in Mother Nature’s decorating.

And this…well, it is certainly not the view I normally see from the porch.

A Mary Frances Bag:
I always carry a small purse because I don’t like the weight of a heavier one. This Mary Frances bag is my favorite for an evening out. You can dress it up or down. It looks great with an evening dress or with jeans…I’ve carried it with both.

Front view…I love all the little details…like the beading.

Back view… This little bag is covered in a wonderful mesh-type fabric, under which appears to be a silk fabric. I fell in love with it because it has the look of an antique or vintage piece.

Mary Frances purses are known for their intricate detail work…they are usually covered up in beading…and I do mean, covered up! This bag actually has a lot less beading and detailing than most of her bags. I love the pink beads you see here. The other beads you see running all over it are a gorgeous green…they are the same color as the fabric, with which the bag is lined.

More details…do you see the pink in the darling iridescent butterfly? I love the soft colors of all the fabrics used to make this bag…like the little pink flowers under the butterfly.

Isn’t this just the cutest clasp?

This bag reminds me of Mary Poppins’s bag because it looks like it wouldn’t hold very much, but it’s actually very roomy down inside.

It’s lined with a beautiful deep-green fabric…hard to capture in a photo. Each Mary Frances bag is a little different since so much of it is hand-made.

Mary Frances bags are available at some department stores and on eBay.  All the Mary Frances bags have style names, but I can not remember the name of this one for the life of me. If someone recognizes it and remembers, let me know, and I’ll add it to this post. It’s retired now, so about the only way to find it would be on eBay. I normally remove the dangly ‘Mary Frances’ name thingy when I’m using it…I just like the look of the bag without it.

  4. I love your bag! Mary Frances was my great grandmother's name, so I should be able to remember the name of this talented designer for sure! I love your snow pictures. I take it your porch floor can withstand a little rain and snow? We are expecting our snow later this evening. Happy Valentine's Day too.

Your yard looks beautiful with the snow, but it is a bit hard to see your lovely porch so naked.

    Lovely bag.

  6. I was born and raised in Florida but I lived in Georgia for 5 yrs. and we loved it. I understand about the warm weather thing. We just moved from Florida to a suburb of Cincinnati Ohio and I am not loving the snow. We are getting snow for the next 9 days out of 10! That will add to the 10 inches that are already on the ground:( Stay warm and I will try to do the same.

  7. Glenda/MidSouth says:

What a beautiful handbag! Yes, the snow is beautiful to look at, but to get out and deal with everyday life in it, it is a pain. We are not equipped to deal with it and people around here DO NOT know how to drive in it either.

  8. Annesphamily says:

You know, until a couple years ago I had never heard of Mary Francis bags. A group of women I know were talking about them and I just played along like I knew what they were talking about. So then, I of course came home and googled it. Then one of my friends bought one. Hers is pretty but yours is fabulous. Lucky you.
As for the snow it looks so pretty off your porch. I live in the midwest so it is nothing new here. Most of us are complaining about it by now but it is kind of nice to have an excuse to stay in sometimes.

  24. Allie and Pattie says:

I love that beautiful purse Susan! We are used to tons of snow in Wisconsin. I prefer snow to bare winters because it's at least pretty. Our snow plows don't even go out if it's less than 3 inches. We just get used to driving on crappy roads. hehe. Stay safe and warm. Cindy

  28. Jeanette P. says:

Hi Susan! We also have alot of snow here in NJ. Quite frankly I am ready for my flip flops and some where warm. We had a big storm on Wednesday this past week that dumped alot. Now I ready for it to melt and go away. Those purses are gorgeous. Thank you for sharing them with us.

    Happy Valentine's Day, early.

  30. Susan, Your purse is darling.. just the right size for some mad money, a lace handkerchief and a tube of lipstick.
The snow is a great excuse for staying indoors and decorating or tablescaping.. not that I need an excuse.
    Have fun and stay safe.

  31. Beautiful snow pics and a stunning purse! Almost makes me want to try to re-create it using tulle and my embroidery machine!!

  32. Your bag is lovely and I've never heard of Mary Frances but will be sure to check it out! What can we say about all this snow in Georgia? I am enjoying looking at it but ok, now it can go away so I can get out of the house. Happy Valentine's Day Susan!

  44. Enchanted Rose Studio says:

Happy Pink Snow Day, Susan! I so miss the snow. It makes such an enchanting backdrop to your charming porch.

Your Mary Frances bag is so pretty! I'm a tote-it-all kinda gal. A habit that started with my first born. My mom says, even if you don't need to carry everything all the time, it makes a pretty good weapon in a pinch. ha!

    Happy Valentine's Day!
    Tina

Hi! I finally made it here – came by way of BJ's Sweet NOthings. I was looking for tablescape stuff curious what it's about and decided to browse – I read about your FIL and the heart cakes, which I love. And, just a little bit here and there. Very enjoyable. (I've peeked here before but I cant remember if I've commented and I'm too tired to try to recall… dejavu or not -it was fun browsing and reading! And I love the purse. I need a new purse. Thanks, Jenn. <><

  60. Susan, I have to tell you that no one I know laughs
at your snowfall. Mostly the conversations are about the fact you are not as prepared as we are to weather it. Yes, sometimes the plows are late, but that is because there usually is an emergency somewhere.
Years ago, back in my hometown, we took our new baby down to see my parents and it started to snow.
A lot. For one whole week if you can believe that. My sister came home from college with a friend and at the end of the week we were all zombies ! Claustrophobia, big time. It was a horror story with a happy ending — it stopped snowing on day 7 ! !

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
