Summer Dining on the Porch

Welcome to the 53rd Tablescape Thursday!

I’m often asked where I get my inspiration for the tablescapes I create each week.  Really there is no set answer.  Sometimes the inspiration might be a holiday that’s approaching, like the 4th of July or Christmas. Sometimes it’s china I have that I’m just itching to use. And sometimes it’s a treasure I stumble upon that’s just screaming to become a centerpiece.

Spring Table Setting with Birdcage & Candlelight Centerpiece

Recently, while I was out antiquing/thrifting, I came across this really neat birdcage at A Classy Flea. I loved the green color…it reminded me very much of the green I’ve used so much out on the porch. I cleaned it up a bit and removed all the birdie perches, feeding implements and the plastic panels on the lower section.

I filled it full of pretty, white, Colonial Candle candles…

I especially liked the detailing on the top. I thought about putting a ribbon or something decorative on the very top, but ultimately, I decided I liked seeing the metal ring.

As it started to get dark, the candles gave the tablescape a romantic feel…

Two little birdies nestled down inside…

I think they liked their big fluffy nest of wisteria blossoms. 🙂

With my inspiration coming from the birdcage centerpiece, I looked through my china collection and chose pieces I thought would work well.

A friend gave me these darling linen towels…I love using them as napkins. The green glasses I’ve had for too many years to remember where I found them, now. The wine glasses were another Classy Flea find at $2.50 a stem.

A different design on the napkins…

Bowl and salad plate are by Tabletops, designed by Dario Farrucci. The pattern is Ma Maison. They came from Home Goods, spring before last. The bowl is full of fluffy white clouds against a blue sky. 🙂

Salad plate…

Instead of using the Ma Maison dinner plates, I decided to mix it up a bit and pulled out my Bordallo Pinheiro cabbage plates. (Cabbage plates from HomeGoods and Ross. Flatware is Napoleon Bee from Horchow and Neiman Marcus…click on the pic for a better view of the flatware.)

I’ve had the pitcher for a couple of years…another buy from Home Goods.

It has a topiary design…I can never resist anything with topiaries.

Bird’s-eye view…

What could be better than dining by candlelight on warm, breezy summer nights?

  59. Lovely, lovely tablescape. I just went through everyone on the list and looked at all of them. This is all new to me. Is there somewhere I could learn what makes a good tablescape? I am not a natural at design or arranging things. I see there are things of varying heights and textures and colors but what would the 'rules' be??
    Thanks!

  60. Susan,
What a talented & creative woman you are, you always have such beautiful tablescapes. Such an inspiration to us all.
I foresee birdcages & Colonial candles appearing on lots of tables from now on.
I'm certainly going to be looking out for a birdcage to use in this way.

LOVE it. It all really fits together. I have been really wanting to start a collection for tablesettings (thanks to your inspiration) but I wondered how many settings do you try to purchase? Do you always buy 8 of a piece that you like, or 6, or 12?

  62. Another amazing tablescape!

    Carolyn

  63. Just beautiful dear!!

  64. inner_child says

Love the play of green and white! I adore those cabbage plates and have some of my own.

  65. That birdcage centerpiece is fantastic!!!! I love it!

  66. Hi again, Susan. I am still waiting for my pitcher, LOL! (j/k). Anyway, thanks for coming by. Actually I wanted to set the topiary plates on the other table, the rectangular one that is on the very far side of the patio. We have 3 tables out there. The square one is very close to the kitchen so I do not mind setting one there especially when using unbreakable plates because they are not heavy…Christine

    Hi Susan,

I was on my way to view today's Tablescapes when I found your message on my blog. HELLO to you too. 🙂 I love, your table with the birdcage, I did something similar early this summer, but your cage is better suited to a table setting then mine was.

I've got to get going, we are on our way to look for tile, my husband is re-doing the fireplace in our family room, so he can put a wood burner in there. I'm not happy about it, but it's his house too and he has to get his way sometimes. I'll have to come back to view the Tablescapes.

  109. As usual, your table is out of this world!
    I have a personal question for you…
Do you have an entire room in which you can store all of your china and table items?
I used to have 4 sets, one for each season. When we moves to a smaller house, I gave everything away except the white!

  110. Every Thursday I stop by for lunch…you are the perfect hostess…thank you tremendously for the invite!

  120. I love your tablescape! I especially like the painted dishes. The house in the bowl looks like Ludwig Bemelmans' drawing of Madeline's house in Paris.

I love your tablescapes! I love dishes and decorating tables. Now, I understand yours is mostly for "show" but let me ask a question: What do you do if your "centerpiece" is so Tall and Large that you can't see the people across the table from you if you decorate for a dinner…a real dinner where food is being served!!

I have had that problem in the past and wonder what the solution is? Do you leave it on the table till everyone arrives and gets seated and then take it off so everyone can see each other?? Then the table looks a little bare?
You may have addressed the problem before but I missed it!
    Thanks for your lovely blog!!

Susan, I loved finding this old post from before I discovered your blog. There are two things here I haven’t seen you use; that awesome bird cage (which gives me the idea to do the same with a birdcage that I have) AND the bowls from your Ma Maison. I have seen you use that dinnerware before, and of course seen it displayed on the hutch on the porch, but I don’t remember seeing the bowls like that before. They are adorable! I love the interior with the blue sky and puffy white clouds and pretty flowers tied with a ribbon. It makes me smile looking at them. 🙂 I’m going to keep my eyes open for some of those. I hope I can find them somewhere.

Your tablescapes are so inspiring. 😀
