In The BNOTP Library: The Art of Decoration

Though the book I’m sharing today is an older book, it’s written about a topic that’s classic and forever in style: English Design.

The Art of Decoration by Nina Campbell

3 Things I Like About This Book:

  • One of Nina Campbell’s first jobs was working with John Fowler of Colefax and Fowler. You can see John Fowler’s influence in her designs. Nina also worked with Mark Birley and the American decorator, Elsie de Wolfe.
  • Though this book was written many years ago, the designs featured inside are classic and traditional, so forever relevant and beautiful. I really enjoyed the detail she goes into in describing how and why she made certain design choices for rooms, especially regarding the furniture and fabrics. It’s a little like being inside a designer’s head as she designs the interiors for ten different clients. Each chapter starts with a gorgeous fabric or wallpaper design on the opposite page. I loved seeing those and they just build up excitement for the chapter ahead.
  • To give you an idea of the homes we go inside in this book, the chapters are titled: Classic English Style, A Banker’s Retreat, A Baronial Castle, New for Old, East Meets West, Small But Stylish, An English Country House, Rooftop Drama, Town and Country and Elegance in Miniature. This is a great book for anyone who enjoy classic English style and design.

  1. Susan, thanks for the review. Nina Campbell was on a design panel last year at the Nashville Antique and Garden Show. I much enjoyed her expertise and personality. I should order this book. 😉

  2. Juanita in OH says

I LOVED Nina Campbell’s style. I feel terrible in saying that I had forgotten about her because of HGTV having so many exceptional designers on shows. When I would here her name or see her work I would always think of film fashion designer Edith Head. I don’t know why I make that connection but, it is a good one.
Today I am so giddy! On our local news at noon I received some great, fantastic, hold the presses, unbelievable and joyous news…IKEA is coming to Columbus, OH!!!!! The closest one now is in Cincinnati which is about a two hour drive, this one will be about twenty minutes!!!

    • Juanita, that’s awesome! I love visiting the one that’s in ATL a few times a year. They always have a “pillow of the year” and I love to see what it is each year. Wonder how long it will take for it to be built?
