In The BNOTP Library: The Romance of British Colonial Style

The book I’m sharing today is one I purchased back in March of last year. I looked through it and enjoyed the photos when it arrived, but only recently when I began to read it, did I realize how much history is woven through the pages. History never looked so lovely as it does in this book!

3 Things I Like About This Book:

  • History and geography were always my weakest subjects. I would memorize the information for tests but it never stayed with me for very long afterwards. It’s almost as if not being able to experience it, made it not real. Reading this book brings history to life. In addition to the beautiful furnishings and decorative pieces, there’s a bit of history intermingled all throughout. I wish learning history had always been this beautiful!
  • The pictures throughout the book are romantic and lovely. They are very much like the one you see on the cover of the book. It feels as if you are looking through a faded album you’ve pulled out of an antique steamer trunk that’s been long hidden away in the corner of the attic of a wonderful old home. This book gives you a better understanding about how some styles of furniture came to be designed and how they found their way into our everyday lives. It’s amazing how many of the furnishings and accessories we use in our homes today date back to those early days when the British Empire included areas of India and Africa. For example, on page 94 the caption beside a beautifully decorated, traditional room states: The sconces that illuminate this American living room were common in colonial days, lighted then by oil or candle. Palms, linen and cashmere recall the days of the Raj.
  • The book includes a section titled, A Directory of Travel and Resources. I recognize many of the Safari Travel companies listed in the directory from my recent research online. If you’re interested in British Colonial decor, there’s a list of shops that carry furnishings and accessories, even clothing in that style.

  1. I think I would really enjoy this book. I love campaign style furniture and the British West Indies style (a la Ralph Lauren). Thanks!

    • I do too, Rita. It’s just such an inviting look with all the rattan and warmth of the furniture. I could easily live in a home decorated in that style.
