A while back I received an e-mail from Michele who shared a link to a beautiful home in Virginia located on the East River. The pictures were so charming, I’ve been saving the link so I could share them with you. Actually, I’m sharing two homes and both happen to be on the market at the moment so I’ll include the links in case you want to see more.
The first home is an historic home located in Matthews County on the East River. It has equestrian facilities, a carriage house with an apartment above and a studio cottage. I was caught up in the beautiful photography as much as the homes. Notice how lovely a home looks when the picture is taken in the evening with lights on inside the home. Really feels so warm and inviting, doesn’t it?
Another view of the amazing gardens and surrounding property. This house sits on 12 acres.
The kitchen, breakfast area…love all that wonderful book storage!
Another view of the kitchen…

Beautiful, traditional bedroom. The wall color looks a lot like my fave yellow, Duron, Sugar Cookie.
Pretty, updated bath. I so need to update all mine!
My favorite “room” of all. Doesn’t this take your breath away? What a gorgeous view out to the East River!
Love the three car garage with a wonderful room with dormers above. You can see that room and more of this beautiful home, here.
Classic Georgian Style Home:
There was another home that caught my eye…this is the view as you enter the driveway.
Are you dying to see the home? I am! And look…a four-legged friend is waiting for us!

And finally the house comes into view…A Classic Georgian style home with a center hall entry.
Stunning entry! The listing says you can feel the breezes from the river down this beautiful center hall entry.
I always love the old historic homes that have the double screened doors at the front door.
The Dining Room: I miss having wallpaper in my home sometimes…it can be so charming in the right room.
Big kitchen…
The Master Bedroom and another bedroom: Wouldn’t you love to tour this home in person!
A cozy library
Have to have a screened in porch with these views…
A view looking back into the living room from the screened porch. You can see more of this house here.
(All photos are from the site linked above in this post.)
Thanks again to Michele for telling me about this area of the country and the gorgeous homes!

Oh my – I would take either one! They are so, so beautiful. And those views…to die for.
Wow…these homes are beautiful…the view of the river is magnificent!….We travel to Virginia a lot, so will have to check out exactly where the East River is….thanks for the tours Susan….loved them!
Wow!!! I live in Virginia and not too far from Mathews. I’d love to see these homes in person! I like both, but I think my favorite is the second home. I’ve always dreamed of owning a yellow farm house. I also love the main layout of this home, especially the entry way/hall.
I love yellow houses…would be hard to choose between them! I love that big center hall!
I know, me too! I was reading this thinking, “Hmmm, that’s commuting distance to the base….” LOL
GORGEOUS homes! Thanks so much for taking us along on the tour!
OMG, these houses are to die for!! Yes, I need to redo my bathroom and bedroom next year, I CAN’T WAIT! Great inspiration here. Lots of hugs,
FABBY
If I lived in either house I would never leave home. It would be brunch at my house with friends – we’ll invite a guest chef and learn gourmet techniques, eat our lesson, it would be show & tell our best craft & review the best book we just read, and finally enjoy the view.
That sounds perfect, Madonna!
Gorgeous home tours! Thanks for sharing. It was quite the treat!
Oh, swooon! Love them both, but the second one has completely stolen my heart. That entrway is just stunning with the black & white floor and the twin bedroom with the white matelasse coverlets is perfection. I could easily spend hours pouring over all of the homes on the realtor’s website, but I do have to make dinner at some point. lol Thanks for sharing them Susan! (and thanks to Michele for finding them!)
I know…the entry is amazing! I love the floor, too!
Oh my, Susan! I’m in love with these two homes. What beautiful grounds and the porches are just enchanting. Thank you so much for posting these, and the additional links!
your tours always makes me feel like I am there! Thanks !
Oh Susan,
(Not in the entry hall but in two other rooms.)
such beautiful homes!
I am in love with both of them and especially with that cute and cuddly studio cottage! I wish we could see its three rooms! I’m just imagining how warm and cozy they are! I’m sure I’d stay there all day long enjoying an interesting book and several hot cocoa cups! Especially in the winter!
I also love the entry hall of the second house… I, too, have dark brown furniture against dark yellow walls…
Thank you, Susan, for these tours.
~Hugs to you~
Cecilia
These two homes are beautiful. I especially love the first home. White homes always get me. The grounds are so magnificent. May have to play lotto.
Thanks for always sharing such pretty homes with us.
Ha, buy a ticket for me, too!
WOW! I live in Mathews County and I have been to this home. It has been on several house tours. It is a lovely home.
Debbie
Debbie, you lucky girl!
Blog Cabin from the DYI network was in Mathews last year. Here is the house they did

Enjoy!

Mathews is a couple hours (give or take) away from me. I would love to see these houses in person. They are beautiful! Thanks for posting!
I really love the out buildings of the first house and the stunning view, but the second one’s facade looks like a picture perfect postcard, and I adore the wrap around porch…decisions, decisions.
Great tours!
I only live about an hour from Mathews. Such a cute little town. I’ve always wanted a second home there.. Lots of water.. everywhere.. Thanks for sharing this. Beautiful home..
All simply beautiful but…oh, that floor in the entry is fabulous.
Susan, have you been to Natchez, Mississippi for their Spring Pilgrimage? It is an unforgetable tour of old southern homes. You would love it.
Connie, I haven’t but I so want to go! I need to google that…maybe I can go one year!
such beautiful homes and amazing settings!
Susan, Thanks so much for sharing these with your fans. I took the photos of both homes. I saw the huge influx of traffic to the website yesterday and had to see where it came from. What a delightful site you have and devoted followers. I sent links to both homeowners who I’m sure will enjoy the read. Thanks again!
Bruce, your photos are beautiful! They really give you a sense of how lovely these homes truly are. Thanks so much for letting me share them with my readers. We loved virtually touring these wonderful homes.
Susan, What an amazing site you have created! Thank you so much for your kind remarks about our home. I wish you lived in Mathews; with over 500 square feet of screened porch (and twice that of open porch) I could really use your help– your porch is gorgeous. We’d love to have you come and visit–Mathews is a wonderful place (and the whole county has fewer residents than you have readers!). By the way, the two houses are on adjacent streets–perfect for 2 BFFs. I’m your newest fan! ps. the black and white floors in the entry are floorcloths that I designed and had fabricated–anyone can have them!
Hi Betsy, Wow, that’s a big porch! My porch could use a little more space…it’s only 18′ x 14′. Mathews sounds like a wonderful place to live. Thanks for sharing about the floor cloths. I looked at the floors again yesterday and wondered if those were floor cloths. You did a wonderful job designing those…I love them! I bet there will be some folks trying to copy this idea for their own foyer/entry.
Forgot to say that the Garden Club of Virginia has three houses and a garden in Mathews on tour this year–April 27. Love to have you!
Thanks, Betsy!
