My Decorating Book Wish List Just Got A Little Longer

I’ve just discovered another talented designer on Instagram whose pictures are like something from a fairytale or a movie. Check out the Instagram account of nicolasdepompadour. Nicolas has a beautiful home and is very well-traveled, so he shares some absolutely gorgeous photos of stunning rooms and gardens. He also has an adorable doggie named Sophie who is completely devoted to him and often appears in his photos.

Since I discovered Nicolas’s Instagram, I’ve been stalking it regularly, looking back through a lot of his older pictures. While drooling over photos of his beautiful paneled library, I noticed quite a few decorating books on the coffee table. Nosy that I am, I was able to make out the names of many of them. Some I already have and have shared with you previously in book reviews, but there were a few that I hadn’t seen or had seen and forgotten about. My “Decorating Book Wish List” just got a little bit longer.

One of the books I spotted on Nicolas’s coffee table is Nicky Haslam’s, Folly De Grandeur Romance and Revival in an English Country House. At first I thought it was one I didn’t have because I didn’t recognize the cover. After taking a closer look, I’m pretty sure I already have this book.

This is the book I have and though the cover is different, it has the exact same title and release date: March 2013. Perhaps they changed the cover for later printings? It’s a fabulous book and you can read the short review I wrote about it previously in this post: Nicky Haslam’s Folly De Grandeur: Romance and Revival in an English Country House.

Another book I spotted on Nicolas’s coffee table was: Fifth Avenue Style: A Designer’s New York Apartment by Howard Slatkin. Doesn’t it look delicious? I’ve seen this book before and have now added it to my decor library wish list.

What other books are on my Decorating Wish List?

Rescuing Eden: Preserving America’s Historic Gardens by Caroline Seebohm hits me where I live. I can’t bear the thought of an heirloom garden vanishing forever. I have several of Caroline Seebohm’s books and they are all excellent, so this one definitely makes the cut for the wish list. This would be the perfect gift for anyone who loves gardening.

The Parish-Hadley Tree of Life by Brian McCarthy and Bunny Williams is another book that came out fairly recently that I’d love to have. It’s all about the legendary design firm, Parish-Hadley and the peek I got of the inside looked really good.

Continuing in the English theme, The English Country House by James Peill is getting great reviews. I love that there are so many wonderful books out on English Country design. It’s a classic style of decorating that never fails.

With spring/summer just around the corner, I’m dreaming of warm weather decor. Another book on my wish list is Palm Beach Chic. Ever since I visited Palm Beach years ago, I’ve wanted to get a peek inside the homes I saw there. Now we can!

Michael Devine’s An Invitation to the Garden, looks wonderful and is definitely on the wish list. If you do any entertaining outdoors in the spring and summer, this would be a great book for your entertaining library. Look at that hydrangea centerpiece! Gorgeous!

If yoy like traditional decor but with a more current twist, check out Barbara Westbrook’s book, Gracious Rooms. Lots of beautiful design and inspiration for any home.

Carolyn Westbrook’s book, A Romance with French Living has been on my wish list for a while. I have two of her other books and they are awesome, so I know this one will be just as wonderful. She never disappoints!

Love Valentino shoes? This book, Valentino: At the Emperor’s Table, looks absolutely amazing but is a bit more than I want to spend. I’ve added it to my wish list in case it eventually drops in price. The preview pics are just stunning!

I’ve mentioned this book, Charles Faudree, Country French Legacy, before but had to mention it again since I’m such an admirer of Charles Faudree’s work. It’s a book that was published after his passing and is a compilation of all his work. If you’re a Faudree fan, it would be a wonderful addition to your library.

  1. Gee, I thought since I live in Palm Beach County (not Palm Beach, it might as well be another world, even though it’s just a few miles away) I should buy the book. Yikes…..$47, a price only actual Palm Beachers could afford!

    • The list price is $75 so $47 is good compared to that! Give it some time Bernie and the price will probably come down. It’s a fairly new release and a large book: 304 pages and measures 12.2 inches tall and 1.2 inches thick. Those color photos cost a lot to produce. I’ve looked into creating just a softbound book with color photos of the tablescapes I’ve created and the price I was quoted was very expensive. And it wasn’t going to be over an inch thick, either! 🙂

  2. I still think you should do a book of your tablescapes along with a menu and recipes. I will buy the first one off the press!!!!!

  3. I checked the “look inside” google offers for Palm Beach Chic. There was more variety of styles than I expected. But they all had one thing in common: warm sunny weather. Just a little over 72 hours til meteorological Spring!!!

  4. Nicholas de Pompadour looks 18 ! I am in love with his shoe collection.
Great photos for all of the book covers.

    • I know, he looks very young for such sophisticated taste in design. Did you see his table settings? He has a few of those mixed into all the photos he’s posted and they are beautiful!

  5. You have shared some true gems that definitely speak to my heart, gorgeous, and thank you, Susan! I hope you are enjoying your weekend.

    • So far it has been filled with sunshine and watching the birds coming to the feeders. I think they know spring is almost here! 🙂 Hope you have a wonderful weekend, too! xx

  6. I look forward to everything you post on BNOTP…love decorating and gardening myself but since my husband’s death almost 2 yrs. ago in April, I’ve slowed down with all of that, but all the beautiful pictures you post of your lovely home and your porch (my favorite) is such an inspiration to move forward and take an interest in my passions again!

    • Thanks so much, Sandra. I’m so sorry to hear of your husband’s passing. I hope spring brings you lots of beauty and joy this year. I’m so excited about the longer days and the promise of long days filled with sunshine! ♥

  7. Marlene Stephenson says

I love all your decorating and gardening you do. You have a wonderful home, so cozy and warm. I am so ready for Spring some days are water now than others, can’t wait to get my hands dirty!

  8. Mary from Virginis says

I love book review day! These look great. I will check them out! Thank you.

  9. Cyndi Raines says

Susan thanks for the great book review and I’ll have to check Nicholas out on Instagram. Haven’t looked up anyone else but you and your pictures while in Africa. I like what Mia said about meteorological seasons, that’s a great way to look at the seasons, especially since Winter can be SO LONG in MI. We are just coming out of a winter storm and today it was in the high 40’s which is pretty uncommon for later Feb. in MI but I’m thankful. Tomorrow supposed to be in the 50s’. I know we may get hit with another snow storm, usually do right around St. Patrick’s, but it will gradually move into Spring. Mr. “Pottery Barn” bunny is now being displayed and I am totally in love with him. I think I told you that already, but he is just too precious. Thanks again!

  10. Mawnin’ Susan,
It should be a must to have a booklist, and make your near and dear read it.
Several on your list are already on my shelves. One of my biggest disappointments was Valentino. It was tired, stuffy, jaded with beautiful pictures of course. Recipes that didn’t work etc. etc. never even displayed it. Peek at it in the library before somebody shells out $100 for this heavy drone. Howard Slatkin’s home OMG. I could move right in. Maybe not for long but long enough to enjoy everything in his collections. Palm Beach Chic is now on my list along with Rescuing Eden. The others are perfection. Ever looked at Ann Getty’s book? It’s a fantasy house filled with treasures from her travels and I’m sure in a past life she was Chinese. Maybe a bit much, but this really shows you how the other side lives. Oivey.

    • Thanks for those book recommendations, I need to check out Ann Getty’s book. That’s a shame about the Valentino one. It’s so disappointing when you’ve been waiting for a book and then it turns out the only room you love is the one that was on the cover! I think I would have been tempted to return that one if it was $100! Palm Beach Chic does look like a good! I’ve only been to Palm Beach once but I’ve never forgotten it. We ended up buying a grandfather clock, actually, I think that was on a second visit, so I’ve been there twice. It used to be a great place to go antiquing!
