A Fun Find During My Drive Back Home

A few years back I stumbled across a big, fat turkey in Pottery Barn. He was a bit on the pricey side so I didn’t buy him that day, hoping to catch him in a sale later on. Well, much to my dismay he sold out faster than you can say Jiminy Cricket!

Amazingly, Pottery Barn brought him back the following year. I was so surprised! I remember a sales representative in Williams Sonoma once telling me that sometimes WS will introduce an item into their line and if it sells well, they will often bring it back the following year. Pottery Barn and Williams Sonoma are owned by the same parent company so maybe PB follows that policy, too.

Anyway, when he showed back up the following year, I didn’t wait for a sale and bought him as soon as I spotted him. Of course, that year he did ultimately go on sale. Ha! Just my luck!

I love using him as my centerpiece in a lot of my Thanksgiving tables since he’s such a nice neutral and works with any dinnerware pattern I may want to use. He’s also fun to dress up for my grandsons. lol

Since I’ve enjoyed Mr. Turkey so much, when I spotted this guy in Williams Sonoma last year (or was it the year before?) I bought him right away. He was their display and the only one they had in stock that day, so he came home with me sans box since they couldn’t locate it. A few weeks later I stopped back by and they had quite a few Mr. Pheasants out on display.

I’ve had a lot of fun using him in various table settings.

I’ve come to realize that white centerpieces are super flexible for incorporating into a table setting. You can do so much with them!

Whenever I make the long 8-9 nine-hour drive home from visiting family in Ohio, my fave rest stop for a bathroom break is always a Cracker Barrel restaurant. I love stopping in their restaurants for many reasons: 1. There are a lot of them right off I-75, so they are easy to find when I’m ready for a break, 2. The bathrooms are always clean, at least that’s been my experience, and 3. I enjoy walking around inside their shop to stretch my legs a bit before getting back on the road. I often find something in their store that I just can’t leave without. I’ve bought gifts for my grandsons, Christmas ornaments, and even shell napkin rings.

This time I spotted two items I really liked and came very close to buying both. I loved this adorable rooster lamp. If I’m remembering correctly, it was around $50 which is not bad for a lamp with a fabric shade. I also liked the shape of the shade.

I thought it would look really cute here in my kitchen during the year and I could use this pinecone lamp in the fall and winter. (That’s an older photo, I no longer have a TV in the kitchen since I got rid of cable TV.)  But then I realized I really like keeping the pinecone lamp here in this spot full time, so I think I’ll just look for a different shade to use on this lamp during the spring/summer months. So I managed to talk myself out of the lamp.

But I did pick up this guy below during my visit. He was the same price as the lamp: $49.99. That’s a lot less than what I paid for Mr. Turkey and Mr. Pheasant–about half the price!

I placed him alongside Mr. Pheasant so you could see how he compares in size. I think he will be great as a centerpiece any time of the year. He’s a nice, big size, but not too big. He should be cute in the center of my breakfast table when I’m not using him in a table setting.

If you live near a Cracker Barrel, you may want to stop in to check out all the cute stuff they have available right now. I noticed today that both the lamp and Mr. Rooster are available at their online store here: Cracker Barrel.

Hope you are having a great Sunday. It’s so beautiful here, finally seeing some wonderful sunshine! See you tomorrow for Metamorphosis Monday!

  1. I love shopping at Cracker Barrel, too!

  2. The rooster and the pheasant look great together.

    • They look like they are having a conversation, don’t they? I think Mr. Rooster is inquiring how Mr. Phesant likes living with the crazy woman who brought him home. 😉

  3. Your rooster is darling – I love that he (and Mr Pheasant & Mr Turkey) are all white – they’ll work anywhere! Hope you’re having a lovely weekend – see you back here tomorrow!

  4. Enjoy your treasures. They are lovely and so festive.

I thought of you today, Susan as it is super beautiful and mild and SUNNY here in Ohio today, too. It’s been so long since it’s been sunny- what a treat it was to wake to this morning!

Oh I loooooove Cracker Barrel!!! They always seem to be along big travel routes and I too stop at many. We often stretch and maybe even sit for a spell and have a tea or coffee and a slice of pie. Yum, their pies are so good. I am not a fan of their food but the cuppa and slice – nice.

I also love their quilts and clothes.

I also am a huge fan of their candy area. Just saying I don’t believe I have ever walked out empty handed from one – even if it is just candy. ♥

Glad you are back home, safe and sound. Nice purchases – so you! : – )

I love Cracker Barrel–always find something well-made at a great price…plus, sitting next to their large, warm fireplace in winter is so cozy. Your white finds have worked so well in so many tablescapes. I love Mr. Turkey’s hat & scarf! We, too, are enjoying a sunny weekend, with a sunny & warm week predicted. Although I am a fan of winter, especially w/ snow (which we’ve hardly gotten the last two decades), I am more productive on the sunny days. It’s the ongoing rainy spring days that don’t work well for me. I did comment on your ” looks like daylight at night” post but it wouldn’t go through ( twice) so I gave up. We get that effect here and I love walking in it when others are sleeping–all I hear is the crunching snow beneath my feet. My nicest memory of that light effect was coming home from Lancaster Co. (county just west of us) and seeing about a dozen Amish children ice-skating (some carrying lanterns) on a lovely pond surrounded by various evergreen trees. Had to pull over to watch them as it really looked like a Hallmark movie. That’s the only time in 20 years ponds have frozen over around here– something that was the norm when I was growing up near here–so I feel blessed I got to have that perfect winter day. Hope you have a lovely week. Hugs!

I love both the pheasant and the rooster! Now, my mind was blown when you said about a Cracker Barrel online. Never did I ever even think about looking online or them even being online. Dumb I know as everything is online anymore. That rooster lamp was beautiful too. To bad you talked yourself out of it. lol Glad you got home safely Susan. I always love going to Cracker Barrel too-good food, clean bathroom and a nice little shop to look around in. Hugs, Brenda

  10. Love your new rooster!! Can’t wait to see him in one of your tablescapes. I haven’t seen any Cracker Barrels in So. CA, but I sure would love to go through their gift shop!! I’d have to travel in my SUV each time I went, though, and it would be full! Fun post, Susan.

  11. Susan, should have bought the lamp too. I give myself permission to buy something big for ‘me’ once a year. We will all be in trouble after you let the cat out of the bag about CB online.
Glad you made it home safely.

When I saw that lamp, I had to laugh!!! Way back in the 1960’s, when my mother was decorating her home everything Americana, sh had at least two rooster lamps like the Cracker Barrel one you photographed. you brought back fond memories! I, too, love stopping at Cracker Barrel. A few years ago I found two gardening themed wreaths and have used them every spring. They’re about ready to be replaced and I wish Cracker Barrel would have a good replacement! I’ve enjoyed your posts! Thank you for sharing!

  13. I love the Cracker Barrel stores also. I always seem to find the cutest salt and pepper shakers there! Thanks for sharing your life with us.

I have a rooster and hen that I love (from Cracker Barrel about 23 years ago) but they are in color. I do love their food and the store. I also have the sweetest Mr. and Mrs. Bunny in soft pastels that are wonderful for spring. Glad you are home safe. We’ll soon be getting ready for Valentine’s!

    • I love the roosters that are colorful, too! I’ve seen some gorgeous ones over the years. That is so awesome that you still have yours all these years later!
Thanks, it’s good to be back home. I really miss my home when I’m not here, then I miss the family I left back in Ohio.

  15. Hi friend,
I’ve enjoyed reading your blog for years! You have a beautiful home and I’ve been so inspired by your tablescapes. You are a classy lady and I try to somewhat decorate in ways you share with your group. I love stopping at the Cracker Barrel along I 81. Have fun with your treasured Christmas center pieces. Happy New Year!

  16. I love the Rooster! I would buy him for my kitchen, but I really don’t need another one. And I’m trying not to get too much into a barnyard theme! ha ha. I love Cracker Barrel for shopping too. I bought a huge Santa in a sleigh one year the day after Christmas for $50! The sleigh is pretty large and sits beside my tree most years. When we were having a ladies luncheons at church in the spring and fall, I almost always bought cute little seasonal salt and pepper shakers from there for favors for the guests who sat at my table. Of course I bought sets for myself too. I haven’t been in Cracker Barrel as much since the pandemic. It might be time for a visit!

  17. Hi Susan,
Glad you are safely home in GA. That rooster lamp is really cute, you might want to order online.

I have a white rooster similar to the one you bought but I think yours has better detail at the rooster’s legs. Mine sits above the refrigerator all year long and I add a red bow and some holly around his neck at Christmas. I really like the look on Mr. Turkey with scarf & hat. I should try that for my rooster next Christmas. My Mr. rooster was purchased at Home Goods.

I do miss Cracker Barrel, have not been since pandemic.

    Enjoy your southern weather!
