A Grinch Christmas Table Setting That’s Super Kid Friendly

Welcome to the 636th Tablescape Thursday, a blog party sharing beautiful table settings for all occasions!

A couple of weeks ago I set this fun Grinch-themed Christmas table setting in the breakfast room.

Grinch Christmas Table in Tartan, Grinch Salad Plates

Here’s a bit better view of that table.

I set that same table again in the dining room the first evening my son, daughter-in-love, and grandsons were here. I knew the boys would love the Grinch plates and Grinch centerpiece, but I changed this setting up a bit to make it even more kid-friendly when I placed it here in the dining room.

I changed the glassware slightly for the boys.

Plaid Chargers, Grinch Stole Christmas Plates, Ornament Glasses

I used the same adorable ornament-shaped glasses, which aren’t really made of glass, though they look like they could be. For their milk glass, I used inexpensive holly glasses purchased years ago from Dollar Tree–so no worries if one was broken. I also changed out the glasses at the other place settings, this time using my Spode Christmas Tree stemware.

Forgot to take a close-up of the Spode Christmas Tree stemware, but here’s a photo of the wine glass from a previous table setting.

Pssst: You’ll find the directions for making this Christmas Tree Napkin Fold here: Christmas Tree Napkin Fold.

For the centerpiece, instead of the Grinch Christmas Tree, I used a mercury-glass tree that I lit in the evening with small battery-operated tealights.

Did you notice the napkin rings and napkins are also different? I simplified the napkins to just one napkin instead of two thinking that would be easier for the boys. I chose “Ho, Ho” napkin rings for this table. It’s been ages since I last used those in a table setting. I love how the lime-green color of those goes so well with Mr. Grinch.

The boys seemed to really enjoy this table, especially the Grinch plates and ornament-shaped glasses.

Looking at this table now, there’s one thing I would change. I wish I had added some faux snow about the base of the sled and the tree. That would have been so pretty against the plaid table cloth. Now I think of it! lol I had a lot going on that day getting ready for their visit, so I guess I’ll cut myself a little slack.

If you are participating in Tablescape Thursday, please be sure to add your permalink below, and not your general blog address. To get your permalink, click on your post name, then copy and paste the address showing in the address bar, into the “url” box when you link up. You’ll need to include a link in your post back to the party to link up and participate.

That’s so visitors to your blog will be able to find the party and the other Tablescape Thursday participants. Requiring a link back also prevents businesses and scammers from linking up to sell their products. (Yep, that really happens, unfortunately.) If you see a post that’s not table setting related, let me know and I’ll remove it.

Please, don’t add your post name/blog name ALL IN CAPS…it tends to create big spaces between the rows of links.

Please link up table setting or table setting related posts only for Tablescape Thursday.

  1. very nice…I guess you could use that white fiber fill that they put in pillow for the snow then it’s not so messy for clean up. Really cute table and I know the boys really enjoyed eating there. Makes the food taste extra special. rls

  2. Susan, your Grinch table is so cute – those doggie antlers for napkin rings are adorable!!! Thanks so much for hosting. Have a wonderful Christmas season!!

  3. Oh my, that’s so darling! I’m sure the kids – and grownups – loved it! I’m heading straight to the napkin folding tutorial! 🙂 As always, thanks for hosting – this party is one of the highlights of my week!

  4. Loved your kid-centered theme! Tables like this help us all to be a kid at Christmas!

  5. That was a very cool table especially for the kids! I didn’t know there was a Grinch dish set out there! Love those napkin rings and the Grinch centerpiece!

  6. That’s so cute. I bet the boys were super excited seeing Christmas and having their own glasses. Susan, thanks for hosting us crazy dish lovers. I swear, it’s been my happy activity all year.

  7. Your tablescape is such whimsical fun, Susan! Well done! Those boys are lucky to have such an awesome grandma!

You know if you were to use a large tray or platter – if it would fit – that you could set the sleigh on, the faux snow could go there and be easier to clean. You would get a pop against the plaid….or even better those “blankets” of fake snow that one rolls out (vs the little bits from you-know-where.) Just thoughts.

So much fun! And, so many cute touches—the tables are treasure chests of ideas! I also looked back at a 2009 post of yours about Lenox Winter Greetings and the amazing accent plates that were made to enhance that pattern. I have those plates and I love working with them every Christmas. They lend themselves well to many differing table scapes. Thanks again for all of the lovely postings. I enjoy each and every one.

  11. Hi, Susan,

I’m going back thru some of your previous Christmas table scapes for inspiration. Are the matching plaid tablecloth and napkins you used for these two table scapes from Williams Sonoma, or did you find them somewhere else? They go well with the WS plaid chargers, and I’m trying to find something that does.

    Thank you.

    Maureen

    • Yup, they are from WS. I purchased them a few years back, I think during a sale they were having. They are the same design as the chargers. Good eye!

      • Maureen E. says

Thanks, Susan! I wasn’t sure, but I thought they were WS. I still can’t figure out why the plaid on the chargers includes green but the table linens are basically red and black. However, they do go together well. Question: You probably remember featuring a tablescape in your blog that I created with the Pottery Barn Winter Bird table linens, the WS plaid chargers, and Spode Christmas Tree dishware. How do you think the WS tartan table runner would look running lengthwise on top of the bird tablecloth? I’m considering trying it to tie the chargers in better.
