A Kitchen Renovation

Welcome to the the 13th Metamorphosis Monday!
Time for another Metamorphosis Monday! I can’t wait to see all the Before and Afters posted for this Met Monday…you’ll find all the links at the end of this post.

Hold on tight…we’re going for another ride this week in my time machine. Did you take your Dramamine…you know this thing goes pretty fast. I’m setting the dial for 1991…destination: Kitchen.

I’ve pulled all the “before” pics you’ll be seeing (except one) from an ancient VHS tape we made on our second walk-thru of the house, prior to actually purchasing it.

I played the tape, stopping it periodically to take a photo, so the pics are not the greatest quality…but I think you’ll get an idea of what the kitchen looked like prior to renovation in 2002.

Kitchen Renovation

The pic below was taken right before renovation began in 2002, so it’s the only “before” pic you’ll see that was taken after we had actually moved in. At this point, we had already replaced the stove, microwave and dishwasher. As you can see the kitchen felt very small and dreary with all the stained cabinetry.

Kitchen Renovation, Before Picture

After: I painted the inside of the cabinets myself and had the exterior painted professionally.

Kitchen Renovation

I added Kichler, xenon under-cabinet lighting. I almost never use the overhead canned lighting I had installed because the soft glow of the under-cabinet lighting is so much nicer. If you’re planning a kitchen renovation, I highly recommend Kichler. You are not going to believe this, but I have been using this lighting since 2002 and have NEVER had to replace a bulb, yet. Isn’t that amazing?!  (Oops, forgot to turn the light over the t.v. on for the pic…it is usually off for a better view of the t.v.)

Kitchen Renovation

Below you will see a “before” pic taken prior to our moving in. You can’t really see it in the photo, but the formica counter top had been melted in two spots where apparently a previous homeowner had placed a hot pan.

And now for an “after”…the name of the granite is “Portofino.”

Kitchen Renovation: Granite and backsplash

I decided to go with an ogee edge, as opposed to the standard bull nose or squared off edge.

Out with the beige, formica back splash!  One of the more expensive parts of the renovation was this narrow trim piece that runs along the back of the back splash, and the accent tiles you see throughout. I think they add a lot to the kitchen and were worth the expense in the end. I chose neutral colors for the kitchen hoping I wouldn’t tire of the look.  It’s been 7 years and I’m still loving it.   I’ve added color to the kitchen via the mixer and decorative accent pieces.  Those are always easy to change out for a new look.

Kitchen Renovation: Backsplash

Here’s a before pic showing the awful stove/microwave. It was all one unit and you could barely lift the lid off a pan to stir because of how low the microwave was in this one piece unit…very poor design.

I always wanted a double oven.   This kitchen is way too small for that but this Maytag double-oven fits in the space of a single one. The top oven is as wide as a full size oven and is perfect for casseroles, pizza, bread/rolls and about 90% of the things you might cook in an oven on a day to day basis. It has a toaster function which is awesome for making toast or heating up leftovers. It also heats up very, very fast because of its size.  I use it constantly and it is so much better than waiting for a full size oven to pre-heat.

The lower oven is full size and will hold anything a full size oven will hold. The double ovens are really handy when you have a turkey in the bottom and a casserole or bread baking in the top. So if you have limited space, but would really like a double oven, I can recommend this one.  It also has separate timers, separate thermostats, separate everything.

Kitchen Renovation: Double oven for small kitchen

Since the kitchen isn’t very large, I wanted to open it up as much as possible. I’ve always liked cabinets with glass doors, so I took all the doors to a local carpenter and he cut the center panel out of each door so the glass could be added.  It really opened the kitchen up and made it feel a bit larger. You can read more about this, HERE.

Decided to go with red accents…

Kitchen Renovation: Red Kitchenaid Mixer

This may be my favorite addition to the kitchen…a dish washing detergent dispenser. This appealed to both my practical and aesthetic side…no more unsightly detergent bottle sitting out on the counter.

Before: Dull, stainless sink…

After: A shiny, white Kohler sink…one side is nice and deep for those really large pans…

Kitchen Renovation: Kohler sink

Below is a view of the desk area before renovation. (You can also see the vinyl flooring that was pitted and in terrible condition.)

Don’t know if you can see it, but there was a stiff, wire mesh in the cabinet doors above the desk. I replaced the wire mesh in these doors with glass.  It looks much better and keeps dust out of the cabinet, something the wire mesh did not do. Note how the counter ends right behind the faucets in this pic…after pic coming just ahead.

After:
I carried the granite over to the desk area in the kitchen. This pic also shows the glass installed in the doors of the cabinet above the desk.

No more vinyl flooring…I love hardwoods in a kitchen. They are really comfortable for standing and working.

I had the granite cut larger than the countertop had previously been to create an eat-in bar area for the kitchen.  Scan back up two photos and you can see how it looked before. Whenever I entertain, guest seemed to love sitting here.

I purchased a “counter depth” KitchenAid refrigerator. Counter depth refrigerators are several inches taller than normal refrigerators and about 4-5 inches less deep. It gave me several more inches of much needed space.

Kitchen Renovation

Before pic of the breakfast area… All the trim was stained and made the kitchen feel very dated and dreary…

After: Stained trim is gone…breakfast area feels much brighter and more open. The open door leads out onto the screened-in porch.

Another “after” pic of the breakfast area…this is the view while standing at the sink. (The room you see through the bay and off to the right is the screened-in porch.)

Hope you enjoyed this kitchen renovation. Let’s go check out all the great “Before and Afters” posted below for your visit today!

Wow, your kitchen looks not only brighter but larger too. You had a real sense of ‘vision’ to see how totally acceptable cabinets could become even better and brighter with the paint, glass fronts etc. We have a very similar layout, but my sink and dishwasher are in opposite locations to yours and our counter has a raised breakfast bar. The glass fronts and beautiful counter material are something I hope to upgrade to in several years. Beautiful job! Happy Easter

  2. Kathy's Red Door Welcome says

I am totally amazed at how much you have accomplished in such a short amount of time. Hope you are having a lovely Easter! I haven’t morphed anything this week but I still wanted to leave you a comment.

  3. FOR THE SAKE OF TIME says

This a wonderful change from dull to dynamic! I so wish I had before pictures from last fall before my kitchen change. I also went with lighter cabinets with a glaze. Your update is a real plus in the world of kitchens. Thank you for sharing.

  4. Susan,
I have always loved your kitchen. I remember seeing it on RMS and I thought what a creamy beautiful kitchen. The countertops are so beautiful and so are the cabinets. I love the use of red and of course your dining area is just about the prettiest! Thanks for sharing I love seeing this kind of redo. I bet you just are as happy as a clam in there. Cindy

  5. Terri and Bob says

This is an amazing transformation. Thank you for sharing it with us. What an inspiration for those of us who don’t think a small kitchen is worth the redo. How wrong am I?!?

  6. Linda/"Mom" says

    * How many people are lucky & blessed enough to see their visions come to fruition?… And your visions were fabulous, as is EVERYTHING you do, dear friend! Again, HAPPY EASTER! Love, Linda *

  7. Melissa Miller says

Susan your kitchen is truly one of my all time favorites.
I love it’s bright and welcoming feel.
The granite and trim are gorgeous. The Red appliances just pop!

I haven’t had any luck with the Targets birds yet. I’ll try again tomorrow and hopefully I can join in the fun.
    ~Melissa 🙂

  8. Dream Mom says

The kitchen looks so much nicer. I like a nice bright kitchen myself. In my former home, I used under cabinet lighting and loved it-it was great for task and for ambiance. I also like the bright white sink-I’ve never really been partial to stainless since it’s “gray” and that seems so depressing. Love the granite countertop “edge”. Nice job.

  9. prof en retraite says

Hi Susan! I hope you had a wonderful Easter! I’m still laughing at your Carmen Diaz comment about my fork!!! I love your kitchen! It’s amazing to see the “before” pics…incredible difference!! You really have amazing vision and the ablility to make your visions come to life!! Thanks for sharing…hugs…Debbie

  10. Barb @ GritsandGlamour says

Susan – as a Real Estate Broker, I can’t tell you how many homes I see that have so much potential and possibilities. But because they have been cosmetically neglected over the years, Buyers pass them by. Your story is the perfect example of what a little insight can accomplish. Your kitchen is designer quality, and I would not have expected anything less from you. I loved all your details. Thanks so much for sharing. I can tell Jean-Claude is quite happy to be the Executive Chef at your home. 😀
    Hugs, Barb

  11. Miss Laura Lu/RMS4291960 says

Susan you are just one talented lady! Your kitchen is beautiful but when you get to see the before it just shows what talent you have! You really make me want to break out the paint for my kitchen cabinets! To paint or not to paint! That is the question! Actually I just want new cabinets! Thank you for sharing! God Bless! Lauralu 🙂

  12. Hi Susan! Oh, I just love seeing your beautiful home and guess what? Your kitchen’s layout (the working section) is a lot like mine! My cook top is in the peninsula and my sink is where your stove is! We need to redo so badly, but so much has happened after the storm, the kitchen is still on hold! Shoot! I love yours so much!
    Be a sweetie!
    Shelia 😉

  13. Your kitchen is gorgeous! I love everything! I would love to have that sink with the dish soap dispenser. I hate having the bottle out too. 😉

  14. ~CC Catherine says

Susan, You and I were on the same wave length this week. You’ll get a kick out of mine, even though the makeover is at my sisters house in Norcross; our posts were very similar, but very different at the same time. I love your white and bright kitchen! It’s one of my favorite choices for a kitchen. The home we purchased when we moved to GA has Cherry cabinets., I miss my white cabinetry from NC. Hope you had a blessed and Happy Easter! 😉 ~CC Catherine

  15. nikkicrumpet says

Never underestimate the power of paint. This transformation proves that with great taste and some hard work any kitchen can be beautiful! Now it fits in with the rest of your stunning home. I can’t even imagine you ever having worked in a dark kitchen…it just is so not you! Happy Easter!

  16. Hi Susan, I am so enjoying your blog! Love your kitchen. It is so pretty. You have so many wonderful ideas. You really do inspire!!

  17. Incredible! I’m ready to come over and share a cup of coffee or tea or whatever just so I can enjoy your kitchen! hehe Hugs from Conroe, TX!

  19. It’s an amazing transformation- and I’m coveting! I know I shouldn’t – especially on Easter, but it’s So BEAUTIFUL! Thank you for this inspiration – I’ll see if I can’t get Scott to look it over. I know he’ll be as inspired as I am to change over my kitchen, too! Thanks for hosting such a great Monday blog post, Susan. Glad that I could participate!

  20. Clean and Classic Interiors says

What a beautiful and dreamy kitchen! It reminds me of our redo – doesn’t it just make you so happy that you gave the old kitchen new life. What a vision! I also especially love the integrated soap dispenser!

  21. Terrie's Lil' Piece of Serenity says

Susan, I always love seeing this transformation. I love your kitchen!

  23. Hudson Goods says

really amazing photos, great style here. Looking forward to my first meta monday!

  24. Hi Susan….I’ve seen that “Before” kitchen picture before…those awful dark cabinets…formica countertops..Oh wait…that’s my kitchen!! No, mine has ugly navy blue formica counters….no burn marks though. I think the day I left the house and kept the stove on I intentionally wanted to burn it down…Your’s is beautiful..you have such an eye for beautiful classic rooms…I love it…and I’m a bit jealous….Sue.

  25. DesignTies says

This is a perfect transformation, Susan – you’ve worked with what you had and made it soooo much better with a little paint, some special materials and a whole lot of creativity! Excellent!
    Victoria: EdinDesign Interiors @ DesignTies

  26. Your kitchen remodel is beautiful! You really had a vision and now have a bright, open, and cheerful kitchen. I bet you can’t even believe the before and afters!

  27. starsfault says

I love the lighting too! We’re planning to upgrade and add this to our kitchen this year. My transformation this week is a very small one – I used old anaglypta wallpaper from a prior remodeling project to make May Day baskets. I love this heavy wallpaper, you can use all kinds of paint techniques to make it look like vintage leather, or tin ceilings, or beadboard… and if your base wall is less than perfect, it hides most blemishes.

  28. Tamara Jansen says

Wow! Your kitchen really turned out fabulous! amazing 🙂

  29. Fifi Flowers says

    LOVE the kitchen remodel!

  30. You have my dream kitchen. very jealous…but happy for you! Someday…maybe…I can have a kitchen that beatiful!

  31. Wonderful kitchen. Such inspiration.

  32. This truly is a metamorphosis–an ugly old caterpillar to a glorious butterfly!! Your vision and hard work certainly paid off! The only thing I morphed yesterday was a kitchen full of dirty dishes back to normal–it was almost worth a picture! Can’t wait to see where all our Target birds have been 🙂

  33. Room Service ~ Decorating 101 says

You did a great job on that kitchen. Thanks for coming by and the sweet note that you left there.

  34. Pat@Back Porch Musings says

Your kitchen makeover is gorgeous, Susan! It certainly made the room brighter. It also seems to be larger.

I’m working on a makeover to the powder room. Not as dramatic, as your kitchen makeover, though.

  35. Nancy, your kitchen makeover is awesome. I wish I could have showed this to my husband, before we put in our new cherry cabnets last summer. You really lighten up the space. I also have the undercabniet lighting, but they are still in the box, waiting on husband to install:) I may try to do this post next Monday (if I can figure it out)

  41. Your kitchen is absolutely gorgeous Susan! What an amazing transformation & great Monday Metamorphosis post.

  42. I definitely like your new kitchen better. LOL! You’re right, I couldn’t see anything on the before pictures… That would have driven me nuts!

Susan, wonderful! You are truly amazing. Thanks for sharing with all of us.

  44. What a fabulous rennovation. It doesn’t even look like the same space. I am really learning from all you guys to look at the possibilities, and not what is there. Great pics showing the before and after. Love the new kitchen. Hugs, Marty

  45. Dear Susan, How great to view that kitchen makeover again! You did an absolutely suberb job. I think I may have said it before, but I have the same Maytag double oven and microwave over it, only in stainless. Did I mention that I never want stainless again? LOL That top oven is a grand idea, and we use it almost exclusively. I hope your Easter was a wonderful one, and your week is as well. Hugs, Jan

Paint just does wonders for a small, dreary kitchen! And yours is beautiful with all of the wonderful details. Sally

  47. Hi Susan,
I just enjoy your blog so much. I love it when I read about napping on the porch ~~ not quite yet, here. Good title for you.
I have an award on my blog for you and would love you to come ‘on over and get it for your blog. It’s a FAN and you may want it in a few months!
Lastly, I adore those dishes you have on the upper corner of your header and also on the hutch picture on your sidebar.
I gave all my china and dishes to my 3 grown girls and make do with what I am left with. I don’t entertain that often as we usually to out.

I would love to know where you were lucky enough to find them ? I have called, written and done the internet, with no luck.
Now those I would have out and use. Again, I think it’s the “House” thing some of us have.
See you over here, soon. Connie

I love your kitchen and when you see the “before” and “after” you realize how much work you put into it. We’ve only done two things to our 13 year old kitchen – we put in a laminate floor to replace the awful vinyl flooring put in by the builder and we had to replace our refrigerator and I also choose a counter depth one. I did the measurements and made sure the new one was the right size and when it was delivered it was higher than the measurements given. We had to cut out the cabinet above it – but it doesn’t show so we were lucky. One of these days we may replace the other old appliances, sink (I want a farm style one) and counter top. One can dream!

  67. What a beautiful and inspirational job you did Susan! Your kitchen layout is very similar to mine, however instead of upper cupboards I have an abundant of Pantry ones that flank the refrigerator etc.
(Which is nice for storage but generates lack of counter space.)

Hope you and yours had a wonderful Easter. Hugs -Brenda-

  68. Hi Susan! Just got back from the Western Caribbean and i have missed your posts. Your kitchen transformation is bright, perfect and cheery. Big change!…Christine

  69. I love the lightening under the cabinets. That is the one thing my kitchen is missing. I am so happy I followed one of my garden friends to your charming blog. Can’ wait to see what is next on your list of blogging.

Stop by my garden in The Midwest sometime! Happy Bloom Tuesday

  70. Charli and me says

Sooo beautiful Susan. It looks so bright and cheery. It’s just lovely!

  71. Your kitchen redo nturned out great. I have the same stove and microwave as you, only had it for a couple of weeks now and we are loving it. I also have a counter depth fridge, it looks nice. Someday I hope to replace my counter tops with something, just not sure about what yet because I want to keep the farm house feel and not so sure granite is my answer, as mush as I love it. I too have a huge white sink. It is beautiful, but alittle hard on the breakable dishes. I love what you did with the cabinet doors. I have often thought of removing 2 doors or having some glass installed, I just can’t decided on which 2 doors and not sure if it works out for 2 doors. I wish I had you here to help.

  72. Your kitchen is really beautiful! Are the cabnets cream colored or white? My work monitor is kind of dark so I cannot tell. Love the detail!

What a beautiful make over. I hope I can make the kitchen in my new home look even half so good. I redid my last home, did all of these things and when he died…I had to move. I lost it all..30 rosebushes that were gifts from my children and my husband..all of it is gone. I am starting over..but it’s fun to look at yours and remember and hope I have what it takes to do it all once again. Simply lovely!!! 🙂 I can tell how proud you are and I am so happy for you!! You have exquisite taste!!

    Great Job!

  77. Sarah @ Thrifty Decor Chick says

Wow, just gorgeous. Thanks for the heads up about the double oven. I have never seen that and it would be perfect for us! We wanted a double oven but decided too late for the builder — I guess it was a structural change and we couldn’t do it. This is great!!

  78. I love the change your kitchen went through! I just purchased a house, and the previous owner painted their cabinets black, yikes! It actually looks nice, but I’m more of a white/cream kitchen type of girl, but I’m trying everything I can to lighten it up because painting over it seems like a nightmare. I was wondering if you had any advice on the under cabinet lights — did you install them yourself? Any tips?

  79. Absolutely fabulous kitchen make-over! Beautiful job. Your blog is wonderful – I'm new to it and having a great time getting to know you!

  80. Susan,
I've looked at this post before but decided to revisit after reading today's post of the porch transformation. Wow! Amazing how you changed the entire feel of this house. You certainly had vision. If I ever get my blog up and posting, I'll post the transformation of our kitchen. Thanks again for your creative inspiration. I spend many hours on your blog.

I like the idea of removing the center of the wood cabinet doors to insert glass. Economical choice with huge design impact. Yours go to the ceiling, I noticed. Mine have the hideous firdown ( not sure how to spell this word) set up. My dream would be new cabinets that go to the ceiling and give me another row of shelves that stretch all the way around the kitchen…and turning the shelving over the kitchen desk into another group of true cabinets. Ahhhh…it never hurts to dream. I really like the granite that you chose, too. Thanks for much for sharing your vision for your marvelous kitchen redo. Cherry Kay

    Dear Susan:
Beautiful job with your kitchen make over…I love the way it came out, my favorite place in the house is my kitchen, I renovated my kitcen on Sept. 09, last year too, mine was white, but not pretty, kind of modern style, I'm more classical and so I did mine completely! The cabinets are hard wood and granite too, nothing better to work in such surface.
Thank you for sharing Susan. You're terrific.

This was a great renovation! I love how light and airy it all looks now. I remember the darkly stained trim back in the 80’s and how everybody loved it. But boy, it seems so dreary now. And I love the granite you picked. Very pretty. Do you like granite? I have it in my new house and ugh .. it drives me crazy. I keep thinking I must be missing something. It seems so streaky to me. I like it to look shiny and polished, but it never seems to. Any hints? And I laughed because I too have red accessories, even a red Kitchenaid mixer, lol. It’s a very pretty, inviting kitchen, Susan!

  88. I love your kitchen. I just found your blog and plan on exploring everything! I’m planning a kitchen reno too, and wanted to get the doors professionally painted but didn’t know where to go. May I ask who you went to (I’ve heard of people taking them to uto body shops)? Do you remember what the cost was roughly? Thanks for any advice 🙂

    • Lisa, Welcome! Glad you found BNOTP! Well, I didn’t have the best experience with the painting part. I primed and painted the inside shelves and had a professional painter come to my home to do the cabinets. He painted them in my garage on a super rainy day. I don’t know if that was responsible but the finish didn’t come out as nice as I would have liked. I hadn’t heard of taking them to a body shop but that sounds like a great idea. I think I just had a bad painter who was in a hurry. I think if you hire a really great painter who is a true professional, you could probably get a nice job at home. But, I bet the body shop idea would be the most durable. If I have mine repainted at some point, I just may try that.

    • Oh, and about cost, I don’t remember now because it’s been around 13-14 years, but I don’t remember it being super expensive.
