A Kitchen Renovation

Wecome to the 4th Metamorphosis Monday!

Welcome to my modest kitchen renovation.  Okay, if you have a weak stomach, you might want to look away at this point.  This was my kitchen before renovation…dark and dreary. This is the only “before” pic I have to share…but it really tells the story of what the kitchen looked like prior to renovation.

You can’t see it in this photo, but the genuine builder-grade, formica counter top was melted in two spots where a previous owner had apparently placed a hot pan. The back splash was the same bland, beige formica. Over the years, I had replaced the dish washer and stove. I’m not a huge fan of stainless appliances and I knew I wanted a white kitchen some day, so I chose white appliances along the way.

Ahhhh…much better!

Kitchen Renovation, White cabinets with glass doors

I added Kichler under cabinet lighting that can all be turned on with the flip of a single switch. I almost never use the overhead canned lighting I had installed; the soft glow of the under cabinet lighting is so much nicer.

Kitchen Renovation with Glass front cabinets and undercabinet lighting

Got rid of the bulky t.v. and replaced it with a sleeker model. Cooking isn’t my favorite thing in the world, so I love having a distraction in the kitchen to help pass the time.

Kitchen Renovation with Glass front cabinets and undercabinet lighting

Decided to go with neutral colors in the kitchen…the granite I chose is called Portofino

Kitchen with Granite Counters and White Cabinets

Removed the beige formica back splash…yea!!! One of the more expensive parts of the renovation was this narrow trim piece that runs the length of the back splash…and the accent tile pieces you see throughout the back splash.

Wish I had taken a picture of the original stove before it was removed…it was awful. I always wanted a double oven but my kitchen is fairly small. I found this Maytag double oven that fits in the space of a normal one. The top oven is as wide as a full size oven and is perfect for casseroles, pizza, bread/rolls and about 90% of the things you might cook in an oven on a day to day basis. It has a toaster function which is awesome for making toast or heating up leftovers. It also heats up very, very fast because of it’s size…so much better than waiting for a full size oven to pre-heat.

The lower oven is full size and will hold anything a full size oven will hold. The double ovens are really handy when you have a turkey in the bottom and a casserole or bread baking in the top. So if you have limited space, but would really like a double oven, I highly recommend this one.

Since my kitchen isn’t very large, I wanted to open it up as much as possible. I’ve always liked cabinets with glass doors so I took all the doors to a local carpenter and he cut the center panel out of each door so I could install the glass…it really opened the kitchen up.

Preserved Wreaths for Christmas Decorating

My sister, Glenda, cross stitched this for me years ago…she knows me all too well!

Since my kitchen isn’t very large, I wanted to give it some special touches. I paid a little extra and had the edge of the granite cut with an ogee edge, as opposed to the standard bull nose or squared off edge you usually see in most kitchens.

Decided to go with red accents…

Baking Station in Kitchen

This may be my favorite thing in my new kitchen…a dish washing detergent dispenser. This appealed to my practical side and is so much more attractive than having an unsightly detergent bottle sitting out on the counter.

Before I had a dull, builder-grade stainless sink.  I really liked this Kohler porcelain sink.  One side is nice and deep for really large pans.

I carried the granite over to the desk area in the kitchen.

I had the granite cut large enough to create an eat in bar area for the kitchen. Whenever I entertain, guest seemed to love sitting here. I purchased a “counter depth” KitchenAid refrigerator. Counter depth refrigerators are several inches taller than normal refrigerators and about 4-5 inches less deep. It gave me several more inches of much needed space.

Standing at the sink…this is the view. The room you see through the bay and off to the right is the screened-in porch.

  3. Can’t believe I am the first to comment but am still in THE STICKS of Fl…..yes, there is such a place…and have been BORED so am lurking around on my laptop:):):) Susan, you know I LOVE your kitchen….loved it when I first saw it on RMS. IF and when I get a new oven (please God) I am really going to consider the double one like you have….GREAT idea and since there are just the 2 of us now it would be SO much more practical! I adore your granite and I, too, HATE stainless sinks. We are kindred souls it seems:) Can’t wait to see all the transformations tomorrow! Have a great evening! Hugs, Pinky

  6. Kimm at Reinvented says

That is beautiful, I love everything about it. Love the cabinets, the glass fronts, and the granite is to die for.
If you ever decide to pass on that cross stitch, I could provide a loving home for it!

  7. Susan, you know how much I love this kitchen! That is probably one of the prettiest granite colors I’ve seen, and you KNOW I love the pops of red. Did you do the happy dance when that formica backslpash came down? We certainly did lol. Thanks for sharing this. Kathy

  8. It really doesn’t look anything like it did when you moved in. At least nothing resembling what I remember. I know it took a long time to get everything like you wanted it, but it was so worth it. Besides increasing the value of the house you really improved it’s livability.

  9. Hi Susan! Oh,how I love your kitchen and what a transformation! Wish we could do all of these wonderful things to our olden 70s kitchen! Everything you do is spectacular!
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia 😉

What a beautiful transformation!!! I absolutely love it. The edging you had done on the granite is nice. I like it much better than the usual cut. Great idea. You kitchen looks so much bigger, brighter and welcoming.

  19. I’m in! Susan, the narrow trim that you added is worth all the money you paid for it. It’s gorgeous. And I love your whole kitchen, love the glass cabinets and the granite and that double oven stove is so practical. I wish I could get one but we have a counter top Jenn air stove and a double oven installed in the wall so I don’t have room for a standing stove/oven. Love your renovation!…Christine

  20. I forgot to add that the picture that Glenda cross-sticthed is precious!…Christine

  91. Theresa Marie DeCosta-Keener says

What is the backsplash color tiles called? I love them and want to put in my kitchen.

    • Theresa, unfortunately, I don’t remember now. I did that renovation over 10 years ago and I purchased the all the tiles from Home Depot Expo, which is no longer in business. You may want to visit a Home Depot and go to their kitchen renovation department. I don’t know if all HD’s have that but the one near me does. It’s in a separate area of the store. Anyway, bring up this post on your phone or have them bring it up on their computer and maybe they will recognize it or have something similar. Hope you find it…I bet something similar is being made today.

  92. Just found your blog, I know a bit late, but I guess I’ve been too involved in my art. Anyway when we redid our kitchen with $$ new cabinets stained in a med. to dark stain, I had my misgivings. Cabinet maker and my hubby talked me into the wood. Our previous kitchen was white but we had problems with the white yellowing and cheap wood. Long story short I miss the light of my old kitchen, the cabinets are beautiful but so dark for my taste. If you did your painting of the cabinets 10 years ago, how is the paint job holding up? I know white paint wears from use, how does it look now? Any hints on keeping it fresh looking?

    • Hi Gloria..I painted the inside, priming with Kilz first…then I had the outside professionally painted. It has held up well. There are a few places that I’ve dinged an edge with a pan or dish but overall it has held up really well. I will need to think about having them repainted again sometime but they still look good. I just use a soapy rag to wipe them down occasionally.
I would highly recommend having them professionally spray painted and do a bit of research to determine the most durable paint to use. I can’t remember now what I used but I remember it was very washable. I would not use oil based paint because it’s famous for yellowing with time. With everyone painting cabinets these days, I bet Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams will have a paint that’s great for that. I know Benjamin Moore has a really expensive line called Aura. I used it on my front door and it held up great for many years. But just check with several paint companies to see what paint they recommend for cabinets now. You learn a lot by talking to different paint companies, at least I always do once I start a new project.

  93. What a great job you’ve done with your kitchen. An inspiration, for sure.
