A Magnolia & Lemon Centerpiece

Welcome to the 11th Tablescape Tuesday!

On one of my trips to A Classy Flea this past summer, I came across this happy daisy china.  It was love at first sight!

I used place mats and matching napkins I already had. The faux bamboo flatware is from Big Lots…very inexpensive but I love it.

This is an American made dishware and it dates back to the 1960s. It was made by Metlox Potteries out of California and the pattern is Poppytrail, Sculptured Daisy. The pattern is raised and it gives the daisies a bit of a 3-D look.

I found these cute flower-shaped plates at Home Goods…really wanted six, but they only had three. So I alternated them around the table with the salad plates that actually match the china.

Here’s a place setting with the matching salad plates.  Which do you like best?

Isn’t this just about the happiest china you’ve ever seen…you just couldn’t be sad while eating from this plate!

The Sculptured Daisy china is so sweet and uncomplicated, I decided to decorate the table the same way. Instead of using bold candle holders with large candles as I so often do, I went with a more delicate look, using lots of small votives instead.

For the centerpiece, I went with an arrangement I frequently use on one of my tables during Christmas parties. This has to be one of the simplest centerpieces ever…I stole the idea from a Southern Living article a few years back. Just toss lemons into a large vase, fill with water and add some live greenery/cuttings from your yard. I like to use magnolia leaves but I’m sure other types of greenery would work just fine.

Here’s the view from the other end of the table. Just as I took this picture, the sun managed to find an opening through all the trees and lit up my centerpiece.

A few pics as it was starting to get a bit darker outside…

Ok…I’m going to hush up now and just let you enjoy!

  1. Susan, Beautiful. My wedding china has daisies on it. Wouldn’t it be great if someone knows where you could find 3 more of those flower plates? I have used the fruit in a vase also…but with flowers…I like the greens.

  2. OH! So refreshing and sweet!!! I love the lemon centerpiece–VERY clever!

  3. Darlene - Our Creative Life says

Susan you are amazing! Do tell me how many sets of dishes you own?

  4. Thanks for hosting again this week! I can't tell you how many times I've looked at that very pattern in different antique stores, and considered buying it…not that I need it, but just because! I bet it would also look pretty w/ limes in the vase & some of those big old spider mums (we always used them for homecoming in high school). Hope you know what I'm trying to describe. I can't tell you how many different kinds of dishes are "speaking" to me right now! I'M SO TRYING TO CONTROL MY BAD SELF!

  5. Susan (Moonlight and Magnolias on RMS) says

Hi Darlene…I think I have around 11 or 12 sets of china…but then I’ve been collecting them for 30 years and for the most part, I find amazing deals. Like this daisy china…for 6, 5 pc place settings and some serving pieces, I only paid $85 at A Classy Flea. 🙂 But I am running out…only have 2 more sets, I think to share with everyone.
    Susan

  6. I have read that limes work well also, if you need a darker color in your vase to help hide the flower stems.
I think the china and flatware are a good match. Either one of the salad plates goes very well with the place setting. I like the idea of alternating around the table.
I think it was wonderful that the sun smiled on your efforts. Then when it was no longer visible those lovely votives took over.

  7. Lilly's Life says

That is gorgeous. I love the 3D daisies. Thanks for the idea on the table centrepiece – that is really simple yet stunning. Isnt green peaceful!

  40. Linda/ "Mom..." says

*** SS~ I smile at the thought of "Daisy Dishes", as that is similar to OUR first set of "everyday china" (back in the stone ages, you know, 1967!)~~~ Oh, did I just LOVVVE those "happy plates" n' their various pieces, & was more excited to receive THOSE than our "good china", so to speak!!! You did sooooo much to present it all in such an "uber-specialicious" (my latest, made-up word!)way, that is sooo pleasing to the eye ~~~ Heck, a MacDonalds burger would even look fabulous on THIS cheery table, Susan!!! THANKS, yet once again! Love, Linda

  41. I love daisies in general, so this china really appeals to me! I love the whole tablescape, and I think the simple centerpiece and votives are perfect.

  42. brettinsky says

  49. I love the tablescape, the arrangement, the light, all of it! Very well done!!1

  50. I was so surprised to see your Daisy china set. I have this set too. It was given to my mom from my dad’s sister and to me when my mom passed away. It’s been boxed away for years in my basement. I started to open the box earlier this summer as I thought maybe I would see if my SIL wanted the set. Now I’m curious if it is the same as you described. It looks so pretty on your porch! Where do you keep all of your china sets? I found you first on RMS and fell in love with your beautiful home. Later after discovering Blogland I found your blog which is marked as a favorite.

  51. Lady Katherine says

Your china is so lovely on the porch, I love the leaves and lemons, my neighbor has a magnolia tree, wish I did, but I go and cut off his. Every thing is beautiful!
Go see my persimmon cake! It was a lot of work! Georgia is known for peaches, and every where we went, working, north, south, everywhere were pecans! I am happy to say we have NOW, lots of pecan trees, they grew up while we worked out of state for 5 years.

  52. First time visitor to your blog, drawn by your Tablescape Tuesday!
Enjoyed your daisy dishes and tablescape. You should ask all of your blogging friends around the country to look at their HomeGoods, TJ Maxx or Marshall’s to see if they can spot your additional flower salad plates you need….I know I will look in ALL of mine for you, and if I find them I will happily send them to you. My car automatically turns into the parking lot of every one of those stores I pass, as I love dishes and tabletop accessories and they have great deals there. So, say your prayers, cross your fingers and those little salad plates just may appear!

  57. I'm Just a Southern Girl says

I'm so glad to see this! When I got married back in 1970, I picked this out instead of a formal china that I thought I would not use. I love these and try to use them as much as I can. I am still completing the set, they made so many pieces of this! I paird it with Fostoria Green Argus.

Loved seeing my pottery used for a beautiful tablescape. Maybe I'll get around to doing one for your Tablescape Thursday soon!

  58. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

Thanks, Southern Girl! You can still find a good bit on eBay. So neat that you are still collecting it. I love it!
