A Nautical Table Setting by Candlelight

Welcome to the 357th Tablescape Thursday!

Soooo, remember yesterday how I mentioned plans to create a table setting on the little bistro table that lives here on the deck. HA! Mother Nature had other plans.

A huge storm came and  raged on for quite a while. It ended about half an hour before it became totally dark out. When the storm finally ended, I  rushed downstairs and quickly put the table I had been thinking about together, then took pictures as fast I could with the little bit of light I had left. So please excuse the darkness of some of the photos and the completely fogged up wine glasses. lol

Remember that fishing net I purchased so long ago at Marshalls?

I used it as an overlay for the tablecloth and the little starfish that came attached to the netting was cute hanging along the front.

If I’d had a bit more time, I would have placed some pretty white sand around the candle inside the lantern and tucked in a few seashells, so pretend they are there. You have a good imagination, right? 🙂

I used my favorite fishy flatware and some shell napkin rings I made years ago by gluing pretty shells to plain, wood napkin rings found in Kohls.

If you like tables for two, you’ll find a bunch more under the category, Tablescapes/Occasion/Tables for Two at the top of the blog. I’ll also link to that category page at the end of this post.

Flatware is called FishStix, love that name! The shark face on the face of this flatware, along with the fins on the handle, totally crack me up. It’s perfect for a casual nautical/beach table setting. I found this flatware here: FishStix Flatware

You may remember when I purchased these wine glasses a month or two ago.

Fish Wine Glasses for Summer

Did you know wine glasses will fog up when it’s very humid outside? As soon as I poured the room temperature wine into the glasses and brought them outside, they fogged up completely and stayed that way until I brought them back in. I’m pretty sure there’s a physics lesson to be learned in this post. 😉

So, you can’t see it very well, but there are little fishes on the decanter, as well.

Tablescape Thursday

If you are participating in Tablescape Thursday, please be sure to add your permalink below, and not your general blog address.

To get your permalink, click on your post name, then copy and paste the address showing in the address bar, into the “url” box when you link up. You’ll need to include a link in your post back to the party to link up and participate.

That’s so visitors to your blog will be able to find the party and the other Tablescape Thursday participants. Requiring a link back also prevents businesses from linking up to sell their products. (Yep, that really happens, unfortunately.)

Please, don’t add your post name/blog name ALL IN CAPS…it tends to create big spaces between the rows of links.

Please do not link up table settings that were just recently shared in the last few weeks for Tablescape Thursday.

  1. Can I come over?? LOL

  2. Susan, the darker pictures make the candlelight show up prettier. Lovely table for two. Thank you for hosting.

  3. Love your nautical table by candlelight Susan! I have the same problem with my camera lens that you have with your glasses! I have to try to remember to put my camera on the porch in the morning to warm up this time of year, otherwise when I’m ready to use it, it takes 30 minutes to defog 🙂

    • Wow, I never thought about how it can effect a lens, too. I’m so cold natured and keep it so warm in my house that I don’t think I’ve run into that, yet. But this is the first time I’ve taken pictures after a huge storm late at night, so the humidity was really bad. Thanks for that tip, Mary!

  4. Such a pretty table, Susan. I love the blue and green colors and the fishy glassware is adorable. Thanks for another festive Tablescape Thursday.

Susan, I love your romantic little table scape for two. The dimmer light and flame from the candle make it all the more romantic! And I love the fish net over the table cloth. The little star fish just makes it all the cuter. I didn’t realize you had found a decanter to match the wine goblets. Love that! And the sand and sea shells inside the lantern are the perfect finishing touch. 😉

    • Yep, I lucked out and found it a couple of days after I found the glasses. 🙂

I love the way you accessorize your tablescapes. I just wonder how all your good table scaping fodder will ever fit into your little cottage. 😀 Maybe you can buy two cottages. One for living and one for storing. 😛

  6. It’s so lovely! Love Beachy/Coastal things and the glowing lantern…Perfect!

  7. Hi Susan! Your table is so charming. It feels like your having a romantic dinner in Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard on a porch or terrace. You are very talented! I love all your table designs! 😉

  8. Linda Campbell says

Love your nautical table setting!!! The darkness makes it look even more romantic with the candle. Lik what you did with the fish net – it completes the look. Thanks for sharing.

  9. Love that flatware!! I’ve never seen anything like that – so unique! Thanks for hosting another wonderful Tablescape party!

  10. What a great idea to use the fishnet over your tablecloth! In fact, your whole tablescape is so pretty, and it’s made me think of something… In the past I’ve been used to doing things like that on a large scale (more people), but recently I’m “empty-nesting” and sometimes doing things like your tablescape just doesn’t seem worth it for only 1 or 2 people. But you’ve reminded me that it is still worth it, even for 1 or 2, to use our creativity to add some beauty to our everyday lives. Thanks, Susan!

  11. Mary from Virginia says

Beautiful table, and I like the use of the fish netting; very cute!

  12. Oh Susan, you have created a wonderful summertime tablescape! I love its darkness- that blue hour is always a favorite, right? It’s real and lovely.

Your fish flatware and stemware is ADORABLE…..and that lantern is one of the best I have ever seen.

Thank you for hosting – holy moly, has it really been 357 of them????

    • Thanks, Michele! I thought about the blue hour a few times. I never turned around to take any photos through the trees to see if it was upon us! lol I think it was getting close. It has to be really, really dark to capture it.

  13. Susan, seems the tablescape gods delayed your photo shoot for good reason–the lighting is so romantic and the setting that much more charming. Your table-for-two scapes have all the style of the party size. Well done.

  14. I think your photos are great (I can totally imagine the lantern filled with sand and seashells). I live by the ocean and I feel like I ABSOLUTELY need to find the same fishing net for my ocean inspired tablescapes!!! I don’t live near a Marshall’s/TJ Maxx/Home Goods, so I will ask 2 of my besties who often go to those to keep an eye open for me (& I’ll pay them back). LOVE the net and the entire tablescape!!! You are so creative and you have a wonderful, enjoyable blog!
    Best wishes,
    Michelle from simplysantabarbara.blogspot.com

  15. Lovely Summer time tablescape for two. Very nautical with that terrific lantern and fish-net table topper! I love it dear Susan, you are one creative lady.
Thank you so much for the great party.
    Hugs,
    FABBY

  16. I would be happy to share a meal with you at this table! Great job acting QUICKLY!!! Can you share where you got the lantern? It is one of the prettist I have seen! Love the glasses and flatware!!

    • Thanks, Pinky! I’m pretty sure I found that in either Michaels or HomeGoods. I have purchased lanterns before in Old Time Pottery, so it could have come from there. I’ve had it so long, I’m just not sure…but those are the three places I normally purchase lanterns because they tend to be too expensive in other places.

  17. Lovely tablescape. My favorite elements are the fishnet overlay and the lantern–with sand and seashells added, of course. I believe I have a blue fish net somewhere–I’m going to look it up and use it on my table!

  18. Susan, as usual, a stunning tablescape! I love that flatware, it is amazing! I shared my link as I usually do and it kept telling me I didn’t have a backlink. I even went to my post and clicked on the link to come over to share my post, I don’t know what the glitch is, I have never had a problem with it before. I hope you will approve and share my post! Thanks, Chloe

  19. Susan, you have really inspired me in past posts about setting romantic tables for two! I have an antique English gate leg table in my living room that I have brought into the den and put in front of the fireplace for a beautiful Valentine’s Day table for the hubby and me back in February. I have plans to use that same table in the middle of my very sunny living room for my soon-to-visit best friend. I can see us enjoying a very feminine setting there.
Living in Memphis, I totally sympathize you with your fogged up glasses. Every time I step out of my car, my eyeglasses totally fog up! Isn’t this heat and humidity especially awful this year in the south? At any rate, your table is a hit! Thanks for the ideas. I love the use of the netting over your tablecloth.

    • Oh, I love that Martha…dining in front of the fire! Your friend is going to feel so special…what a lovely dinner that will be!
You are not kidding about the humidity…it’s crazy here now. I actually love it most of the time, give your skin that perpetual dewy look. lol What do they say about southern women…we don’t sweat, we perspire. 😉

      • Susan, I used to hear my mother say we don’t sweat; we glow. If that’s the case, I must look like neon by now! =)

  20. Wow, I think this is one of the loveliest little table settings I’ve ever seen. The fishnet is such a great idea. I love all the little details that you thought of to incorporate. Stunning!

  21. The flatware is great.

  22. I’ve had trouble getting outside to do a tablescape for that kind of reason too. I need to plan better because we have plenty of days that are beautiful!
Those plates are cute- and the fish stemware goes well with them! The fishnet is a perfect accent for your nautical table.

    • I know, I should do the same, although there have been times I’ve set a table on Monday or Tuesday on the porch and by the time I could take photos, it was raining. We seem to be in a rainy period right now. I shouldn’t complain though since I know the folks out west would happily take the rain we’re getting.

  23. I love the netting as an overlay. I have those same wine glasses and would love the matching decanter. Did you find at Marshalls? Ours did not carry it. Bummer! Pretty simple setting.

    • Yep, but in a different Marshalls from where I found the glasses. I just happen to go inside another Marshalls one day, not even looking for glasses, etc… and I spotted it.

  24. Marlene Stephenson says

It a very nice table setting,i don’t think a liile humor hurts when you sit down to eat and they certainly will add to the conversation.
