A Princess and the Pea Master Bedroom

Welcome to the 9th Metamorphosis Monday!

When I first entered the foyer of this home, 18 years ago, it was pretty obvious why it had been on the market for over a year. The carpet throughout was a burnt orange color and the interior had not been painted in 8 years. On our second walk through, we videotaped many of the rooms so we could remember it as we shopped for a new house.

Please bear with me on these next 4 pics…they were taken with a “state of the art” video camera…state of the art 18 years ago! 🙂 To get these pics to share with you today, I put the ancient VHS tape in a VCR and played it, pausing every so often to take a pic. These aren’t the greatest pics, but I think you will get the general idea. Note the orange carpeting…the walls were painted “grammar school green.”

A darker green floral border ran around the ceiling…even the molding was painted green!

The dressing area off the master bedroom used to be a fifth bedroom, but the first owners of my home had the hallway door walled off and made this area into a dressing area, complete with built in cabinetry and three closets, one of which is a walkin. We were told the walk-in was the “fur closet” and had its own separate zone on the security system. No furs in there today, unless you count my furry slippers. 🙂

Here’s a shot of the dark green wall paper that once graced the walls of the dressing area…

Here’s the master bedroom today…

Gone are the grammar-school-green walls and green molding. Walls are painted a soft, buttery yellow called Sugar Cookie. It’s an old Duron color and is my favorite yellow in the world. You can still walk into any Duron store or Home Depot and ask for it…they all still have the formula.

To make the bed extra cozy for winter, I’ve added a down mattress topper, on top of the regular mattress. Max (kitty) loves it! I jokingly call this my “Princess and the Pea” bed because of its height. 🙂 Do you remember that fairy tale? Don’t you just love this whimsical painting below by Edmund Dulac ? It’s called The Real Princess and is based on the fairytale.

Without the comforter…you can see the “lumpiness” of the down topper…

This bedding is Summerton by Rose Tree and was purchased at Linens and Things many years ago. The dust ruffle that came with the bedding was much too short, so I had one made to accommodate the 23 inch drop. If you Google, Summerton Bedding or Summerton Rose Tree, you can still find this bedding available online.

I love a bed piled high with pillows! You may recognize the pillow in the center from the “tease” post I published yesterday. That little pillow is very special to me because it was made just for me by a very special person.

My sweet friend, Carol, made this beautiful pillow as a surprise birthday present for me a couple of months back. Carol is a wonderfully talented Interior Designer! When the surprise package arrived and I opened it, I thought Carol must have seen my pics on RMS and made it just for my bedroom!

As it turns out, Carol didn’t know I had used this very fabric in my bedroom….she just thought the fabrics in this pillow were ones I would like. Have you ever seen a more darling pillow? Thank-you, Carol…I LOVE it!

Remember this little tole tray I used for last weeks Tablescape Thursday…this is where you will normally find it…here on the bed.

Several of you asked about it, so I thought I’d include a close-up in this post. It was a wedding gift over thirty years ago.

Since I knew you were coming by for a visit today, I made some hot cranberry tea to go with a sweet blueberry and cranberry muffin. 🙂 (Creamer and sugar are Lenox, Butler’s Pantry, Gourmet. The cup/saucer and plate are from HomeGoods.)

The pink camellias are from my garden. Winter has been hard on my camellia bush this year, but I managed to find a few blooms.

Someone else was highly interested in the muffin on the bed.

This Met Monday post includes a Mini-Met involving this space between the windows. For years this space had a table with a mirror above it…you can see the mirror peaking out behind the highboy, if you look closely. When I first purchased the highboy, and before I took the mirror down, I tried it in this spot for a few days. I was never happy with it here because the highboy is quite deep and it created deep wells on either side. The logical thing to put on either side seemed to be chairs, but the highboy was like a large wall of wood beside you when sitting in the chair. Plus, it just seemed to overwhelm the windows and impeded some of the light.

So I moved it to this corner of the room. I could have placed it flat against the wall where the chair is, but as you walked down the long hall toward the master suite, you would be staring into the side of the highboy…not the most attractive view. I like it catty-cornered here…and it’s nice to see when coming down the hall and into the room.

This highboy is large…over 7 feet tall. It was a lucky find for only $400 while antiquing in Roswell, Georgia one day.

Remember this from yesterday’s tease?

Continuing with our Mini-Met…this was the next piece of furniture I tried in-between the windows. It worked better than the deep, large highboy, but I was still missing the mirror and table. Without the brightness of the mirror, the room was beginning to feel like it had too much dark wood furniture in it.

Another shot of the secretary between the windows…

I had always planned to buy a “painted” piece of furniture for this room, hopefully a painted secretary. When I came across this secretary at A Classy Flea for around $345, even though it wasn’t painted, I couldn’t resist. Love that Flea!

A cat’s eye view…

So, where did the secretary get moved? I placed it on the one wall where I thought I could never have a piece of furniture, the one across from the foot of the bed.

It actually works well there and seems perfect for that space.

Best of all, I was able to bring my mirror back in…so the room doesn’t feel like it’s all brown wood anymore. This room is always evolving…still needs draperies, a fabulous chandelier of some type and chairs to go on either side of the table/mirror.

Update: Added the chandelier in April 2010…you can view that post HERE.

Do you recognize the table skirt from Tablescape Thursday a few weeks ago…the one about dining fireside in the library? It’s a duvet cover my sis, Glenda, gave me…it’s working pretty well here as my tableskirt.

I have a large glass top for this table, but I’ve decided to leave it off for now…kind of nice seeing the texture of the crocheted covering.

This bedroom has a dressing area just through those doors. I’m really glad the previous owners converted the next door bedroom into a dressing area. They walled off the door from the hallway and added two additional closets and built in drawer space.

The fabric on the chair was in yesterday’s tease post…remember the bee and the little bug?

Dressing Area in Master Bedroom

Here’s another view of the chair fabric…every room needs a little whimsy.

This dresser goes with an 80 year old bedroom suite.  The bed and chest-of-drawers are stored away in my basement for now. The green paint of the dresser goes really well with the fabrics I’m using in the master bedroom.

And this is where Between Naps on the Porch gets created, only normally, it doesn’t look this neat.  Update:  Turned my son’s old room into a home office in early 2011.  You’ll find a post showing my new work space here: Pottery Barn Bedford Home Office, Craft Room, Sewing Room.

This was the best shot I could get of the picture that hangs above my desk.  The glass created a lot of glare.   Do you see the sweet black kitty sitting on the walkway?

The view from the dressing room…you can see the top of the bed here. I’d love to find some wool or flannel bed hangings for the winter months. I envision kind of a “Ralph Lauren” look with a plaid bed-skirt in rich, jewel tone colors. The current look is more suited for a summer look.

Steps hold bedtime reading…bed holds a lazy cat.

I bought a seagrass rug at Bed, Bath and Beyond. I thought it would work well to ground the room and I liked how it contrasted with the dressy  feel of the moire bedskirt.

Well, that’s my bedroom metamorphosis. Hope it was worth the wait…and the tease. 🙂 Thanks for coming along for the tour!

  1. I love your bedroom transformation. I think my favorite piece is the 80-year-old dresser.

  2. Well, Susan, what can I say? That tease lived up to the anticipation. So many wonderful ideas…It’s hard to pick just one thing that I like best. Your fabrics are great, the pillows are plush, and the secretary is beautiful. But, you know, I think I like the surprise of the seagrass on the floor. It’s such a different texture and look for everything else – it binds everything together. And how sweet to have the table skirt from your sis! Beautifully done! Linda

  3. What a lovely, lovely bedroom you put together! I love the colors and all the furniture. You really transfomed your space from what it was. Just beautiful..

  4. Your bedroom is beautiful! It is great to see the before and the after. I love your taste.

That’s a gorgeous re-do! You know, I think I may have that same old wallpaper that you had 18 years ago. We have a 100 year old farmhouse. It’s huge and has lots of character but the wallpaper is not so great. We’ve been here for four years and only gotten a couple rooms re-done. But, I don’t plan on moving again so I guess I have plenty of time 😉

    Blessings… Polly

Susan! You have great taste! LOL I have this same bedding bookmarked at Dillard’s to order after my Master Bath re-do. I fell in love with it when I saw another post on RMR featuring the Summerton collection. The paisley and plaid are the perfect combo. I really love the dressing table w/ the plates above. That area just speaks to me. I love the view from the bedroom looking in. Sooo inviting. Thanks for hosting and sharing your bedroom with us. Barb

ps – I thought Debbie had loaned out Baby Kitty to you for this photo shoot, b/c your kitties look so much alike. Those shots are great! 😀

  31. Susan,
You have done a beautiful job, on the decorating, and how you put this post together. You also got some great bargins along the way! Have a great week. Cathy

  32. I have a hard time believing that you are not a professional designer. That room is beautiful! I can’t believe that you got the highboy for so little. My mom had a 1930’s secretary identical to that one, which she “antiqued” in the 60’s. I gave it to my daughter and she had it refinished and it looks as good as yours now.

  33. Melissa Miller says

~WOW~ Susan I am truly floored by the regal yet comfortable beauty of your bedroom.
    Just an outstanding change.
    ~Gorgeous highboy and bedding.

  35. Susan, you have a beautiful bedroom. You and I have very similar bedroom furniture. I love mine and have had it for years.

I have a strange question for you…I have wanted to get a seagrass rug but worried that my cat would be tempted to scratch on it. Have you had that problem at all? Seems like it would be tempting.

  36. I save the word ‘scrumptious’ for things I truly love … your bed being one of them. It’s like a bed from a fairy tale ~ you are right about that! Does kitty like the texture of your area rug? Your transformation is truly magical.

  37. laurie @ bargain hunting says

Susan, I remember your beautiful bedroom, but I don’t recall ever having seen your dressing room. What a wonderful space. It all flows together beautifully. With all of these shelter magazines going out of business, I think you should start your own magazine. All of your pictures look like they are from a lovely magazine spread. laurie

I enjoyed seeing where you create “Naps” and I LOVE the vignette on the skirted table, the plates on your dressing room wall, the bedding, and the perfect pillow that Carol made. Love the tole tray and decorating books on your steps.I enjoyed this so much!

    Hi Susan,
I have that same plaid in one of our bedrooms. I bought the baloon valance from Country Curtains, but found the material in my favorite fabric store and made the drapes, pillow sham and dust ruffle, only mine isn’t as full as yours. 🙁 I didn’t buy the coverlet, since I already had one suitable to use with the plaid, but I love the one that you have. Great post, thanks for sharing.

Good morning Sweet Friend, I love your bedroom! It is the epitome of Southern charm and comfort! I’m so pleased to see the pillow in a place of honor. Anytime that dressing table needs a new home (along with its other pieces), I’ll make the sacrifice and take it off your hands. You are so lucky to have such a wonderful space and I love your dressing room, the fabrics, the textures, (am I gushing yet)? Anyway… it’s nothing short of perfect!

Love that nifty dressing area, what a great little space. Our bedroom is not as big and I'd love a little more space in there & I'd love hardwoods in the bedroom too, such a great look.

I could just steal that cute kitty cat, Max from you! He's just adorable. I think I told you, he reminds me SO much of a Max cat I used to have. Great personality too.

  57. Hi Susan,
It is beautiful! I love the plaid! I have the same plaid in my living and dining room…and it is slowly creeping into some other rooms as well!

Isn’t that plaid the most versatile fabric in the whole wide world? I have used it for a while myself, and it is still a fave. Currently I have two drapery panels as portieres on my front door sidelights and one square as a table-topper in the LR. It looks great with so many colors and patterns. It made up beautifully into your bedskirt.

Lucky you to have that huge dressing room! I miss mine, now that we have downsized.

    Susan,
You have my dream bedroom! Your colors and bedskirt are so similar to mine. I’m just having a really hard deciding what color to paint my walls. I would love your suggestions. I can’t believe your Classy Flea finds on the furniture–JEALOUS!! I have wanted a secretary like that as long as I can remember. The combo dressing area/office is a great idea. Fur closet? Maybe you could find one at a CF just for fun–haha! And the floors…love it! What a wonderful retreat. Just lovely!

  66. Oh I love it! Left my very first Met Monday…silly though. VERY spur of the moment.

  67. Beautiful! Oh how I love plaids, flowers and painted furniture pieces!! This is such a restful and lovely room.
Have you tried the green chest of drawers (the one in the basement) between the windows? Does your bed have the wood pieces on each side? I actually hang my bed skirt on our rice bed with curtain rods mounted behind the wood pieces.
As you can see the juices are flowing!! Sorry I just can’t help myself. You really don’t need any suggestions from me but…. Keep up the wonderful decorating! Mary Ann

  90. Oh,Susan, you have the most gorgeous bedroom, I love all the fabrics. I love the plaid so much, I even bought two pillows in it, and I think it was even before I saw yours on RMS, but I can’t say for sure. I’m getting forgetful!lol Your furniture is exactly my style, I wanted a highboy , but it didn’t happen. You are such a decorator, in just my style. I love everything you do! The before is unbelievable to what it is now! Wow! Oh, and is that Max? Just adorable! Hugs, Connie

  91. Everything is absolutely beautiful in your bedroom. Your friend choosing the same fabric that you had used is remarkable. You both have great taste.

What a beautiful bed! I loved seeing the “before” photos. I never would’ve guessed your house looked like that before you got your hands on it. I’m even more impressed with what you’ve done with it than I was before!

It’s amazing what a difference hardwood floors can make. I’m slowing adding them as I can, too.

  98. Miss Janice says

Lord have mercy that is beautiful Susan. I’m just like Kitty, I love those linens too! EVERYTHING is just perfect!

  99. Susan,
Your bedroom was one of my absolute favorites from the first time I saw it on RMS! I love the pink/reddish colors of your bedding SO MUCH! And I have a thing for high and comfy beds! 🙂
I try not to be envious…but I can’t help it when I see your dressing area! I’m in love with your built in desk too! And the painting is so sweet!!
As always..your attention to detail is just awe inspiring! I’m so glad to take the tour…even if I AM late! 🙂 Love ya! L~

Susan, I had to smile when I saw the first pictures. We also had hideous pink carpet to get rid of. Your vision for your bedroom was brilliant and that room is nothing short of magnificent. You are a gifted decorator.

OH MY WORD – where did you find that painting with the black cat?!?!?! I LOVE IT! I have a tuxedo but from the back, he looks all black, and I hunt paintings that remind me of him! I love my baby.

Susan, another fabulous room to explore. I love visiting your home! Wish we had a Classy Flea here in Austin. A small secretary has been on my wish list for many years. Thanks for the tour.

  103. Hi Susan,
What a gorgeous bedroom and I love the colors and patterns on the fabric. One special piece caught my eye and that was the green dresser. Love it!
I bet you love you floors, also – i would love to pull up my white carpet that runs throughout the house. Don't you wonder sometimes why we make dumb decisions,
    tho it appears you don't.
Reading your blog backward and it is so interesting. I really enjoy it !

  104. OMG!!! Susan! I don't think I ever saw this post!!!!!!! I saw your bedroom on RMS, I guess but never saw the FABULOUS dressing area! Oh what I would give for that!!!! I adore the fabrics you have, in fact there must have been a reason for me to click on this today as I am currently searching for new summery bed linens and I am going to see if POSSIBLY these are still available anywhere! I have red and gold bedding right now, and I love it for winter but really need to lighten things up for spring/summer. This may be the ticket. And I love the fasbric on your chair, the nubby round table cover and the vignette there, oh I love it all. You really should be a designer…..maybe in the next life???:):) HAPPY SPRING, dear friend!!! XO, Pinky

  105. You did such a beautiful job on your bedroom.. I love it.. as a matter of fact I love all your ideas.. great blog

  106. From Houzz to here…Thank you Susan, for sharing your tips and ideas with me! I Love the bedding and see now how it can be done to skirt a 4 post bed. I hope by using an inverted box pleat this can work and look just as great with a "straight line look" without noticing the "hump or lump" underneath from the side wood boards. All in all ~ Beautiful…Simply beautiful ….Thank you , Blogging Porch Princess!!! (Max is adorable, too:)

    Thanks!

  108. I have been admiring your bedroom for some time. I am redoing my childhood home and would love to do the bedroom in this bedding. I need a 22 inch bedskirt. Where did you find fabric to match and how did you find someone to make it? Would love to hear. Love looking at all the rooms.

    • Thanks, Jane. It’s been about 6-7 years since I purchased that fabric but I still see it around sometimes. I purchased mine in a decorating store called Decor Mart and I’ve also seen it in a Calico Corners store. It’s a plaid moire. If you can’t find it in a fabric store where you are, I’ve also seen it online at Country Curtains. You could bring up their site on an iPad or phone and show it to a fabric store. Or sign up for the Country Curtains catalog and then take the catalog to a local fabric store to show them what you want. It’s been a popular fabric so I bet almost any fabric store could order it for you. You could order the fabric from Country Curtains, but not sure how competitive their pricing on their fabric is. I asked the fabric store here for a recommendation of someone in the area to make my bed skirt, so that was how I found someone to make it. I still love that fabric. I guess it’s a classic because it’s been around for years! 🙂

      • Susan, I have your bed!!! Sometimes things don’t live up to your expectations, but this bed certainly does. Thanks for all your help. Of course mine doesn’t look exactly like yours, but it’s beautiful. I used an iron bed that my parents started keeping house with and I am 77 years old so can’t imagine how old the bed is. I found the bed set at Dillards, the fabric at Hobby Lobby and I remembered that a friend make drapes so I called her and she did the bed skirt. It is beautiful. Thank you for your inspiration. If I can figure out how to get a picture to you I would love for you to see it.

  109. Hi Susan! Just to help you ladies out, I work at Country Curtains in Chester, NJ! The fabric on your bed appears to be our Moire Plaid in the color Rose. The fabric is wonderfully priced at $20.50 per yard, it’s 54″ wide with a 33 1/4″ repeat. It’s made of 55% cotton/45% polyester. I hope this helps Jane out. And yes, the bedroom is simply beautiful . . . but I’m sure you’ve heard that before, many times! 😀

  110. Dear Susan,
I am officially hooked on blogs now about home and decorating due to you:)
I don’t even remeber where I saw your web address but when I went to your site and began to look around and I
thought she is a woman after my own heart and I just love your style! I too have always wanted the type of foyer you speak of , but alas, will never have it. Been in our house for 30 years and don’t see any chance of moving, but it has evolved into what I want over the years and with the kids gone now it still changes. I have been going over all your posts at night while my husband and I watch tv and seeing your home and tastes evolve too.
I am so sorry to hear about Max and so happy that you have recovered and look forward to more posts from you.
I know this is none of my business, but as I said I have connected to you and your story. Are you widowed? My heart went out to you knowing that you had no one there to take care of you and Max during your ordeal. You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to. You know how we women are. We get personally invested in everything. I live in Covington, LA which is about 40 miles north of New Orleans. It has always been a bedroom community of New Orleans and my husband and I have lived here mostly all our life. We were both born in New Orleans and our families moved here. It is a lovely town with many old homes. I am just absolutely sick today because I offered to watch my four grandchildren while my two daughters and their husbands go to Jazzfest in N.O. today. We are having our bi-centennial celebration this year in Covington and they were having a house tour this afternoon with all the old homes on tour!!! Can I tell you I am just heartsick! Oh well, nothing can match watching my six year old playing t-ball today with the three year old cousing cheering him on and chasing after two 20 month olds in the bleachers. My husband and I are in the grandparent heaven stage of life right now and loving it.
Blessings to you my friend and thanks for introducing me to your lovely world and the world of blogging/1

Just love the room…simply stunning! The pillow your friend made is the perfect addition. Do you know what the name of the small floral fabric she used is, I have been looking everywhere for a small print with those colors.

    • Hi Kay, Unfortunately that fabric is no longer available. Isn’t that just always the way. You find the perfect thing and it’s been discontinued. I’ll bet if you search Calico Corner or your local fabric store you could find something similar!

    Hi Susan!

I LOVE your blog and I’m so glad I discovered it on Pinterest! You have a beautiful home and I was admiring your “MY NEST” photos and much to my delight I see that your Master Bedroom has the same bedding as my guest room. So glad to see someone else loves this pattern. I also have a matelasse coverlet on the bed and the comforter at the foot of the bed. Here’s a picture. I will continue to enjoy your home and your blog. Thanks for all the great information and pleasure you provide.

  113. What a beautiful master bedroom! Any chance you could share where you purchased your bedding, and the brand/pattern names, of the floral comforter and the plaid bedskirt/pillows?

    • Thanks, Vicky! I purchased that bedding about 17-18 years ago from a store called Linens and Things if I’m remembering the name correctly. It was a big chain store like Bed, Bath and Beyond but sadly, they went out of business many years ago.

The name of the bedding was called RoseTree Summerton Bedding. You can see it in this old ad on Amazon:
      https://www.amazon.com/Rose-Tree-Summerton-Bedding-Collection/dp/B000PIB8IU

I don’t know if you can still find it anywhere. The Euro shams are in a beautiful moire plaid and I found that same fabric in a local fabric store and had the bedskirt custom made since the bedskirt it came with was way too short for my bed.

Looks like the Euro Shams are still available on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2RsxjO5

I found a few pieces of it on eBay: http://bit.ly/2RpWuAU

I’m amazed any of the it is still around since it’s been so long since I purchased. I still love it after all these years.
