Okay, But I Could Set the Building On Fire…

Yesterday I was stapling some papers together when my stapler up and died. The spring inside broke and after several frustrating moments trying to reconnect it, I gave up. Normally I would have persisted but I’ve been ready to ditch that stapler for a long time since it has always jammed about every other time I used it.

In searching for a new stapler I came across one I knew I had to get. Do you remember Milton and his infamous red stapler? The movie, Office Space, is an all-time favorite in our family, so when I discovered Swingline now produces the iconic stapler made famous in the movie, I had to get it.

Stapler Scene, Office Space

I came across an article online this morning with some fun facts about how the red stapler came to be. Mike Judge, the director of Office Space, was looking for a special stapler for the stapler scenes in the movie. Apparently, he approached Boston Stapler Company and they declined to be a sponsor for that product placement. He next approached Swingline and they agreed to let him use their stapler, but declined to pay for the sponsorship/product placement, as well.

Mike decided to go ahead and use the Swingline stapler, but he wanted it to really stand out in the movie. So he took it to an auto body shop and had it painted red since Swingline didn’t have a red stapler at the time.

After the movie became a cult hit, replicas of the iconic stapler began appearing on the market. They were selling so well, Swingline began producing their own red stapler in 2002. It is one of their best selling staplers today. If you need a giggle this morning, here are two funny scenes from the movie: Scene 1 and Scene 2.

I purchased my own red “Milton” stapler this morning here: Red Stapler. If you have a few moments, take time to read some of the reviews at that link–they had me laughing out loud this morning! If you’ve ever worked in an office setting, or for a big company but haven’t seen the movie, you’ve gotta watch it! It’s hysterical! Any Office Space fans out there?

Another Tool to Help with Denim Transfer

One other item I purchased recently and have been very pleased with is this Super Cleaner below that has a 4.7 rating after 618 reviews. You may remember the post I wrote recently about issues I was having with denim transfer. If you missed that post, you’ll find it here: Denim Transfer, The Bane of Handbag Lovers Everywhere.

I ended up using a Magic Eraser to remove the majority of the bluish transfer that had appeared on my leather car seat, but it didn’t get down into the creases that naturally occur in leather seats over time. Magic Eraser can be a bit abrasive, so I knew I didn’t want to keep using it over and over if the denim stain returned. Also, the Magic Eraser couldn’t get down into the creases in the leather, and this stuff did! It removed the last traces of the blueish coloring I was seeing on my leather car seat.

Apparently, it’s good for a lot more than just leather seats. It’s an all-purpose cleaner that works on plastic, rubber, vinyl, upholstery and carpet, as well. I haven’t tried it on any of those other surfaces yet, but it did a great job at removing the last of the denim transfer stains from my leather car seat. You’ll find it available here where I purchased it: Super Cleaner.

See you tomorrow for Tablescape Thursday! In the meantime, please refrain from setting any buildings on fire! 😉

  1. I hate to be bearer of bad news but I purchased same stapler about 3 mos ago and it broke, jams..whatever, it’s not working. Was so frustrated especially since I opted for this over a cheaper one. This post was just the reminder I needed to dig out my receipt to see if I can get a replacement.

    • I wonder if you got a dud. The reviews look so good with 4.5 stars after 2,592 reviews. Karen, you may want to exchange it for another one, although it may be too late depending on where you purchased it.

  2. I’m glad I read your post this morning! It made me smile! I’m going for some tests today & I am a little nervous. I love that movie! I love Milton too! My husband & I have watched it many times! You’re right about the stapler comments. It’s funny how many people referenced the movie! In fact, I think I’m going to suggest watching it tonight! Cross your fingers for good test results! Thank you again for the good post this morning! :0)

  3. Susan,
I can’t believe I haven’t seen that movie – now I will definitely search for it on Netflix. Stephen Root who plays Milton is the first cousin of one of my friends. He is so funny! And, it took me a few minutes to realize that it was Gary Cole (with very dark hair)asking Milton to move and taking the stapler.
Thanks for a good chuckle this morning. Hope all is well…

    Susan

    • It is so funny, Susan…I think you’ll love it. Wow, it’s a small world! He is so funny in that movie. All the characters feel real, like someone you’ve known in your life. 🙂

  4. Too funny! I havent seen that movie (why not??? Probably because I want working in a similar type office at the time, lol). Love the red….

    • Oh, Rita…ya gotta see it. It’s one of those movies that gets funnier each time you see it. It definitely reminded me of a couple of the places I’ve worked over the years.

  5. Rebecca Dexter says

Did you ever buy a new car? You mentioned leather car seats and it made me wonder. If so, what did you buy?

    • No, I spent 3 intense weeks researching for hours online, visiting dealerships, “building” my car online and talking to a dealer in the Boston area who had one car I thought I wanted. I even went to the corporate headquarters of the car manufacturer, which is located right here in Atlanta. The SUV I wanted doesn’t come in an interior that I like. I pretty much hate all their interior color combos. So I’m going to keep driving my car to see what they offer in 2019. This was one of the most frustrating experiences because they make the interior I LOVE in one of their smaller SUVs, but they don’t offer that same interior combo in the SUV I really wanted. I discovered through this process that apparently most folks just show up at a car dealership and pick from what’s there. I guess I’m the exception about being so picky. Since I drive my cars forever (drove one 16 years before I gave it to my son who drove it another 2 years) it’s really important to me that I get a car that I love, both inside and out. Really disappointing outcome but it made me appreciate the SUV I currently have that much more.

  6. I love this movie. When it came out, and the red stapler became available, my boss at the time bought one for all of his managers. 10+ years later, I still have mine.

I made him a “Jump To Conclusions” mat and he hung it on the back of his office door 😀

  7. Saw that movie so long ago, I’ve forgotten much of it. But do remember how they captured so many office personalities spot on!

  8. I love this movie, we have all felt like Milton at one time. We make everyone that visits watch it. Also, Little Shop of Horrors. And, if it is only the girls we watch The Heiress (Olivia de Havilland) or Nadine (Kim Basinger). Love the costumes/clothing in both of the last two movies.

I was hoping you would do a post about “your new car”. I have been delaying a new car for the very reason you said. Also, I don’t put many miles on my car anymore so should I buy a hybrid or ????

  9. Thanks for reminding us to watch that movie again! My husband has had the red Swingline stapler for years. My forever stapler has been my black and brass, stapler by El Casco. The history is interesting in that they were a gun manufacturer in Spain in the 20’s and now make luxury desk items that have that sturdy nostalgic, vintage look. Have seen some on Ebay as well!

  10. Gosh, Susan!
You really had me worried for a minute! But then I thought nah, those threatening words never came out of Susan’s mouth!! So glad to learn I was right! lol Needless to say that I haven’t seen that movie and didn’t know Milton, but I already feel really sorry for him: That red stapler was the one and only spot of color in his dreary cubicle! Look at that poor pot plant! lol
Okay, now I am curious about that movie! 🙂
(I only hope it is available on Netflix in Germany!)
    ~Hugs to you~
    Cecilia

  11. We love that movie too! I’m going to have to get that stapler! I’m going to try that cleaner too. My car has leather seating and there’s a bluish cast on the drivers side plus my leather recliners could use a cleaning.

  12. Me, too, luv’d the movie and SO emphasized a lot of it! 🙂 We drive our vehicles “for evah” as well…currently 25 years and 20 years and, well, we did get a 2014…just in case. Luv the stapler!! franki

  13. Well now we have matching staplers. I got the same one in March two years ago. I’ve never seen the movie, though, so guess I’d best catch up with you on that.

  14. Dawn Pinnataro says

The post today gave me a giggle, as did seeing the Office Space scenes too. I sooooo get that movie (being in corp america myself) and the reviews on Amazon a riot!!!

  15. Michele (Finch Rest) says

One of the best movies of all time. Been ages since we’ve seen it. Great suggestion, thanks.

Funny thing about staplers – I must be hard on them – so when my father passed away I got his super heavy, all metal vintage stapler and it hasn’t jammed once since.

Like most things, older is better. Like me. LOL.

Glad you got yourself a happy stapler. OK = going to watch movie now.

  16. Michele (Finch Rest) says

LOL – just watched your two scenes.

Love Milton’s dead plant in the corner. Each time I watch this I see something I missed. Talk about a cult classic. And oh my gosh, 1999 technology – hahahahaha.

  17. Okay, this is hysterical! We were just laughing over Milton references this weekend. Heading over to the read the reviews now! 😀
