A Summer Sunday Stroll

I’m making the long drive home today, wish me luck! Last time it involved a bit of drama…read more about that here: Drama on the Drive Home. Hopefully, I won’t encounter any 18-wheelers with exploding tires this time. Ugh.

While I’m driving all day, I thought you might enjoy a nice stroll through some of the beautiful neighborhoods in this area. I snapped these photos as we walked to a local park on Sunday. No commentary…just lots of delightful, beautiful old homes. Hope you enjoy!

Pssst: There’s a wonderful sculpture at the very end of this post. It was one of my favorite parts of our walk that day!

The mailman stills hand delivers all the mail to the door of each home. ~~~sigh~~~

This sculpture outside one of the local schools is absolutely wonderful! Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any information about it online this morning.

You can hear them laughing, can’t you?

See you tomorrow for Tablescape Thursday!

  1. What a beautifully maintained older neighborhood! I love to see these! What city are they in?

    Travel safely!

Such beautiful homes, but it was the statue that won my heart! I love to hear kids playing and laughing outside. Thus why I enjoyed recess when I worked as an aide at our elementary school. Well, it was a job that I loved all the way around. Working with children is not a job, but a joy. I enjoyed seeing the light bulb go off with my at risk readers. My most favorite job-which really wasn’t a job to me at all. lol Hope your trip home is uneventful this time Susan! Was just talking to my step father about retread tires and he thinks too, they should be illegal, but unfortunately it is the price of tires that keep truckers using the retreads. Makes one wonder why they don’t value human life better! Maybe one day they will be illegal. Hugs, Brenda

    • They def should be illegal…can’t imagine how many people have died due to retreads. Sad that they are allowed. They litter our highways everywhere.

Where were the pictures of the lovely homes you displayed? Thank you!

  4. What a beautiful neighborhood and sculpture. Looking for a place there yet? Some of those homes seem to have your name all over them!! Thanks for sharing with us, Susan.

    • I always love the exterior, but when I start reading the real estate ads, I get dismayed when I see that they’ve been covered at some point with vinyl siding. Almost all the homes there have had their beautiful original windows ripped out and replaced with horrible metal (or something other than wood) energy-efficient windows. Many have had kitchen renovations that are horrible to me. Also, a lot of the downstairs interiors, especially the kitchens have been reconfigured/renovated in farmhouse style or designs like you see on so many of the HGTV shows. Those folks expect to get their money back out of those kitchens and in my eyes, they are complete gut jobs.
It breaks my heart to see these beautiful old home covered in vinyl siding and original windows replaced with cheap vinyl/metal windows. I keep hoping a darling cottage that no one has ruined will pop up for sale.

    • I’m always looking but since the next home I move to will be my forever home, I’m very picky. Afraid of moving and regretting it. Also, would love to add on a screened porch again wherever I move. Thanks, Julie!

  5. Love the statue of the children and wishing you a safe travel home. -Brenda-
P.S.: It’s pouring rain where I am, so hope you have sunshine.

  6. Wishing you safe travels today!

What a gorgeous neighborhood! I’d would look for that story book house in a heartbeat. Lovely place to walk for sure. It’s so wonderful that you have such a friend in Nancy. I know your grandboys enjoy having you around.

Be careful on your trip home!

  8. lovely homes but… the second picture….somehow that tin roof just doesn’t fit well with the architecture of the home ….something that a lot of the homes had in common were the porches…just love a wrap-around porch. rls

That is a statue by Gary Lee Price. I visited the Dallas Arboretum this summer with a friend to see an exhibit of his work titled Celebrate the Children. If you notice the opening on one section of the sculpture, that is there for people to stand in, grab the hands of the children on either side and be a part of the sculpture. My friend took a photo of me doing just that! His work is amazing and it was a great exhibit to visit.

    • Oh, I never realized what the opening was for…what a sweet idea! This sculpture is up to high to really join in the fun, but I love that idea!

  10. Beautiful morning stroll. Classics all.

  11. Wow, what great homes in a lovely neighborhood. I would have a hard time picking out a favorite. I noticed a couple of the homes had upstairs windows open. Must have been beautiful weather. Have a safe trip home.

  12. What beautiful homes. Definitely not a cookie-cutter neighborhood, and how wonderful that it’s been so beautifully maintained over the years. Thanks for sharing.

    • I love that…no cookie-cutter homes. How did we ever move away from that? I bet back in the day, folks would never have dreamed of building or buying a home that looked just the same as their neighbors.

  13. Love the big trees and porches. Beautiful neighborhood.

  14. How I am going to miss my visits to Ohio since our family has moved. These homes are lovely!

  16. Sigh … I could live in any one of these amazing homes! Thanks so much for the tour,

  17. Franki Parde says

    So cool!!! franki

  18. Beautiful peaceful neighborhood and even the postman delivers to the door…

    • Yes! Love that! And they still pick up the trash from the backyard…no pushing a huge, ugly bucket to the end of the driveway where it sits like an eyesore all day long.

      • Charlotte Bruce says

I know, isn’t that awful?! They have “valet trash pickup” here at the apt. we moved into last March. It’s great. They will pick up small empty boxes too.

  19. There is a very similar, if not identical, sculpture at the Magic House in St.Louis, MO. It is level with the pavement in a courtyard and children can step into the open spot to join the fun circle.

  20. Hi Susan! I thought for a second you were in my part of the world – this looks very familiar! 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing all these gorgeous homes – it must have been such a beautiful walk! Hope you have a good drive today!

  21. Such a lovely looking area!!

  22. TERRI SANTIAGO says

    Hi Susan
    Safe travels.
    Love the homes.
In one picture, it showed a mailman walking delivering mail to residence.
Nice to see neighborhoods where that happens.

  23. All beautiful well kept homes. I love seeing the interesting windows some of them had, one had an eyebrow/eyelid…don’t see many of those. Re big rigs, I’m told must have new tires on front wheels. Maybe regulations will get to the back ones. I get concerned when those big trucks weave over to my side when on the freeway. The sculpture was delightful! Safe trip wishes!

  24. I especially like the house with blue shutters, and I see it has a For Sale sign in the yard. Wink, wink. Might cute house!

  25. Bonnie Gutierrez says

Such an eclectic collection of architecture styles! There is nothing like an established neighborhood with tree lined streets.

  26. Loved the Sunday stroll. Those Americana neighborhoods are the best.

  27. What a lovely place for a late afternoon stroll. Even nicer if a few neighbors were sitting on their porches and waved as you walk by. I could see you in one of those beautiful homes. The sculpture is wonderful. Hope you have a safe, uneventful trip home.

  28. Maggie Amis says

I love driving through neighborhoods with the beautiful houses that they used to build…. Thank you so much for sharing – and hope your trip home was uneventful…..

  29. Lovely homes tho too big for me now. I love the sculptures. do you know who the artist is?

    • I don’t, unfortunately. I was with my grandson and was so busy with him, I forgot to look for that. I will have to check when I’m back up there next time.

Love that first house with the eyebrow window, those are awesome. House picture #5 with the mailman looks like a cute cottage type for you Susan, but it would need to be painted yellow with white shutters. But house picture #9, is my absolute favorite and one I could definitely see you in as the front of it reminds me of your house and then with the lovely side room with all the windows, ahh, over the top awesome! So glad you like our northern homes, many neighborhoods in MI are just like this as well. They are fun to go through, even in winter, with a blanket of snow and all the pretty lights, really makes it like a winter wonderland. (For you, a nice visit at that time, haha.)

    • I guess they feel like home for me because these are the same homes you see in all the historical homes areas in Georgia cities. Feels very much like the south I know and grew up in.

  32. Charlotte Bruce says

Wow….what a neighborhood you live in!! Wish I knew all the history of every home. And could see inside them! Anyone would look forward to walking, bicycling, cruising slowly in this fairyland of homes. It’s wonderful it’s all so well preserved and kept up. Thank you for sharing this. It was delightful.

  33. Michele M / Finch Rest says

Oh, my word. What a walk! Whew!

I want to move into a beautiful old neighborhood like that – I have loved living in my beautiful relatively new suburb….but frankly, I am over it.

There is nothing that beats those stately homes. They’re absolutely gorgeous.

PS – So sorry about the accident – so glad you are unharmed. God blessed!

  34. DEBRA D WADE says

Wow … what a walk … I absolutely loved all (okay … most of) the houses, some more than others! The children are adorable.

  35. Hi Susan, just catching up on your posts. Loved this one! We used to take evening walks in Highland Park when we lived in Dallas, which is filled with beautiful old homes. So many now are being mowed down for McMansions, which should be a crime, really. Really!! Also Lakewood in Dallas, near the Arboretum. You can see some in Pinterest — Lakewood homes, Dallas or Highland and University Park homes, Dallas. 300K in the 80’s — now multi million. One can dream! Hope you’re well!!

  36. What a lovely neighborhood! Thank you for sharing. I adore historic neighborhoods, and am so proud to own and am preserving/restoring/rehabilitating my hometown’s two oldest homes. Both are from the Victorian era and were built around the same time, so I call them The Sisters. It’s a lot of hard work, perseverance and some tears, but so worth it to save them from the wrecking ball.

  37. Love the 9th one and the 11th ones the best. Beautiful neighbourhood. Thank you for sharing.

  38. Sorry no I love the 9th one down and the 12th one which is yellow.

  39. Wouldn’t you love to tour inside these homes? *Sigh* There are so many favorites, it’s hard for me to pick just one. I’d have to see inside as well to pick my very favorite. I miss your home tours, Susan. I know about the trouble you had, and I understand, but I always loved those posts so much. So many pretty (and different) floor plans, exteriors, furnishings, etc. It was all so lovely.
