Thanksgiving Tablescape for the Kids

Welcome to the 169th Tablescape Thursday!

Thanksgiving is only one week away!  Wow, this month has flown by.  For this Tablescape Thursday I put together a tablescape with the little ones in mind.  Do you set up a “kids” table each year for Thanksgiving?  Sometimes I think sitting at the kids table would be more fun than the grown-ups table.

Though this table was created with little ones in mind, there are three things I would change on this table if children were going to be sitting here.  1. There would be just one glass at each place setting.  2. I’d remove the salad forks which could prove a little confusing for the youngest ones.  3.  I wouldn’t have acorns on the table since they could end up in mouths or being hurled through the air. 😉  With those three changes, I think this would work pretty well as the children’s table for Thanksgiving Day.

I ran across a cute pinecone turkey place card holder at Martha Stewart online.  Their pine cone turkey was made by gluing feathers to the back end of the pinecone for the turkey’s tail.

This little turkey could still hold a place card, but instead of feathers for a tail, I created a “fan” shaped napkin fold for the tail.  Tutorial for this turkey napkin fold can be found here: Turkey Napkin Fold.

Turkey Napkin Fold for Thanksgiving

Dinner plates the color of yellow autumn leaves are by Noritake, part of their Colorwave Collection.  Rattan chargers dress up the “kids” table without being overly fussy or formal. Flatware is by Gourmet Setting and can be found here: Gourmet Settings Treble Clef available HERE.

These whimsical turkey plates would work great as salad or dessert plates for the kids table because they were very inexpensive.  At only $2.99 each, there would be no angst if one gets broken during Thanksgiving dinner.

The pumpkin I decorated with ribbon before Halloween is still looking nice and fresh, so it worked as a handy centerpiece for this round table setting.

Dollar store glasses let the little ones dine in style just like the grown ups.  At only $1 a glass, it’s not a big issue if one gets broken.   Again, if children were sitting at this table, I’d just use one glass (probably the tumbler) at each place setting to keep it nice and simple.

This napkin fold is really easy.  I’ll try to post a tutorial on it soon, in case you would like to duplicate this look for a Thanksgiving table setting.

I’m looking forward to the beautiful tablescapes posted for this Tablescape Thursday!

HI Susan, those pinecone turkeys are so stinking cute I can't stand it. I love them! so sweet. YOur table is warm and inviting and so beautiful. I'm in love with rust this season and feel that it cozies up the house so much. Your table certainly is warm, and fallish…makes you want to eat and then visit by a fire with a warm fuzzy throw! Love your post today!
    Blessings,
    Debbie

  3. I love the turkey pinecone napkins. So Cute!

  4. I love that table, Susan! The heck with the kids, I 'll sit there!
I would def use fake acorns due to those little worms coming out when it gets warm in the house. The kids would go "nuts" with that!
I remember making the name card holders with a pine cone and feathers with my class every year, always a hit. Love your version with the napkin!
I found some turkey plates at Pottery Barn Outlet last year, melamine, but cute for 50 cents. It was almost a knock down fight to grab them, I needed a lot!

  5. Yeah for Martha Stewart online ideas – and you for doing them. Your table is as always whimsical and warm. The napkins as tail feathers remind me of a school project. The ribbon wrapped pumkin is another inspired idea. Congratulations on your decoupage awards. Well-deserved. Happy, joyful Thanksgiving. ~CJ

  9. Hi Susan- Those pine cones are so cute! I love the fan(tail)napkins! What a creative idea! I see we were on the same page with the pumpkin, rattan and glassware with leaves! What a cute table for kids! We always had a card table set up for the kids when I was growing up! I couldn't wait to advance to the "big peoples" table! It's always so cute to see the little ones at their own table! Your pumpkin still looks great- I loved that idea as you know myself! Those turkey plates were a great price and a wise choice!
    Love it all!

Your table is sweet for the younger family members! I love the pinecone turkeys. I used the fan napkin fold as a symbol of the turkey feathers on my table this week as well. #14 Best wishes for a very Happy Thanksgiving, Susan, and thank you for hosting this fun party!

    Hi Susan..

I love your child's Thanksgiving table, my friend! It's colorful and fun! My favorite…your little pinecone turkeys! I think they're just adorable and you are so clever to use the dinner napkin for the turkey's tail feathers! That's a great idea. I will be keeping this in mind for future use! I ended up buying the same turkey salad plates for my Thanksgiving table. They certainly were a bargain at only 2.99 and it's always fun to have something new! love your pics!!!!! greeetings, angie

  34. I started to say any child from 8 to 80 would feel special seated at your festive, charming turkey day table — but why set age limits?? 😉

Letting the fan-folded napkin serve as "feathers" is both fun and practical! Your originality and eye for color always inspire me. Nicely done!

    Fondly,
    Bill

  35. not that i NEED another dish… but those turkey plates are calling me.. I think it is because the nakpin fold turkey feathers make the whole table look so darn cute…. I'll take the KIDS" table any day.. that's where ALL the excitement happens… Happy Turkey Day to you & your family..

  36. Those glasses immediately called to me and as I read on and found out that they were only $1 I KNEW I was in LOVE!

Those turkeys made of pinecones were a stroke of genius and so cute!

    Great table!

  37. laurie @ bargain hunting says

How cute is that. Love the turkey feathers represented by the napkin fold. By the way, as a sort of experienced grandchildren entertainer, I'd leave the salad fork on the table and remove the dinner fork. The smaller fork is easier for little ones to handle. laurie
