Adding Curtains or Sheers to Your Porch

Welcome to the 3rd Metamorphosis Monday!

Not long after the screened-in porch was completed, I made a simple change that had a large impact on both the appearance and the “feel” of the porch. The total cost for this change was only around $100.

Here’s a pic of the porch before the change…

And here’s after…do you see the change? ๐Ÿ™‚

And after

Big hint: The change is billowing out in the breeze in this pic.

And after

My goal was to soften the feel of the porch. I purchased sheers for all the windows for $4.99 each at Walmart. ย I also purchased the painted wood rods there, too.ย ย The sheers actually exceeded my expectations because in addition to softening the hard edges, they also gave the porch a romantic, up-in-the-clouds feel that I really love. Even inexpensive, small changes can sometimes make a large impact.

Update: It’s been 5 years now and the sheers have really held up well. ย I just give ’em a gentle wash every couple of years and they look like the day I bought them. ย When they get wet, they dry right away since they are sheers. ย I love how lightweight they are because they catch the breezes and it adds to the airiness of the porch.

I can’t wait to see all the great “Before and Afters” posted for this Met Monday!

  18. It’s amazing how much those sheers changed the look and feel of your porch. It reminds me of that Seals and Croft song, “Summer Breeze”.

  19. texasdaisey says

The sheers made all the difference on your porch. It gave it such a dreamy ethereal look. The perfect place to read a book.

  20. LOL – No, I didn't notice because I had my computer speakers on mute. I was watching television and I often turn my speakers off so I can multi- task.

I agree that great minds think alike. :>)

  21. The sheers did make an amazing transformation of a beautiful room to an exceptionally beautiful room! โ˜บ Diane

  22. Hi Susan, thank you so much for visiting my spaces at Micasa, you are so sweet and it means a lot to me that you enjoyed your tour.there are two things that I love a squeeking screen door that slams shut and a billow sheer in the wind.It is a visual I have in my mind and I can come and look at this wonderful porch and see it.I love this room everything about it is perfection as is the rest of your lovely home. Kathysue

  23. Lovely porch before and after! but the billowing sheers add a whole other layer to the look.

    Kathy b

  24. The sheers bring life and movement to what would otherwise seem to be a static area. Being on the second level of your home I’m sure you get a few more breezes than you would at ground level.

I really like the change they make in the overall look. I think it also brings more definition to the windows.

  25. I love seeing your beautiful porch again. And, yes, the white curtains just seem to have really added to the romance. Great job!
    xo bj

  29. Owwwww I just love your porch room. I love the sheers. My friend suggested it to me a couple of years ago and I sorta laughed and blew her off. Oh my after seeing yours, I would love to try it on mine. I had to show her pics of your sheers recently and I reminded her of her suggestion to me and she was smiling like the cat who ate the mouse, and she said “I told you so”. Love the difference it made on your porch.

  30. Would you share where you found the sheers you used to totally transform your porch? I have looked but haven’t seen any that quite equal yours ….

  31. Debbie @ says

Susan your porch has got to be my absolute favorite. I try to look at it and think how can I do this? I just love it! 32. Glenda/MidSouth says

Love the porch with or without the sheers ๐Ÿ™‚ – but they do soften the look. I hung some to help cover my vertical blinds on the sliding glass door, without blocking light and it looks so much better.

  33. Hi Susan…I think I remember you said you had kept an inspiration photo for years of how you wanted your porch to be…if so, have you posted that picture? I’ll just bet your porch turned out even more beautiful than your inspired one.
Great idea you had for MM…so many participants to visit! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Bo

  34. Lady Katherine says

First,as you and others have asked, I am ok, Trying to deal with it all on my on, not told anyone, including hubby whats going on. But I will be in Tuesday for more tests. I am taking one step at a time. Now if you know anyone who makes a corset, I am needing a few, not for fun, but doc says it will help me. I am reading a book on how to make one now.

  57. You porch is just over the moon fabulous! I grew up in an old farmhouse that had a lovely wrap around porch. We all spent a lot of time out there. There’s just nothing like it!
I am working on mobilizng the bloggng community to ry to get Conda Nast to keep the Domino magazine website up as a subscription site in the hopes that we will not lose Domino completely. I have posted the letter I wrote and sent to them on my blog. Please let me know if you are interested in participating. Thanks so much!

  58. Susan, adding curtains to my porch right now, after seeing yours. Our porches are very similar, except I have a hammock instead of a swing. I am getting ready to have my tongue-in-groove floor polyurethaned, but I am wondering, have you had any problems when rain comes in during storms? Sometimes we are away and wouldn’t be able to clean it up right away!
