In The BNOTP Library: Adventures With Old Houses

Adventures With Old Houses was one of the very first books I ever purchased on Amazon. I don’t remember now why I bought this book but I’m sure it had something to do with the title. I had never heard of Richard Jenrette but I had a feeling I would like him because anyone with the passion and fortitude to take on the restoration of an old home, and not just one but 14+ old homes, knows a whole lot about adventure!

Adventures With Old Houses by Richard Hampton Jenrette

3 Things I Like About This Book:

  • I loved that this book was written by Richard Jenrette himself. It’s a personal accounting of what he went through purchasing and restoring several beautiful historic homes including Edgewater on the Hudson River, Millford Plantation and Roper House in South Carolina and Ayr Mount in North Carolina. If you are a lover of old homes, you’ll feel a real kinship with Mr. Jenrette because his passion and love for historic architecture is so apparent in the way he talks about the homes he has restored.
  • Furnishings and interiors are beautiful in all the homes. Lots of gorgeous antiques! We even get to tour Cane Garden, a home he restored in the Virgin Islands.
  • In the book Jenrette goes into details about how much each home cost, how much he spent on renovations/restoration and even the financial strain some of the homes created for him at different points in his career/life. These were all things he could have left out but he chose to share the bad along with the good.

Extra tidbit: The foreword for the book was written by HRH The Prince of Wales…Prince Charles.
