In The BNOTP Library: American Writers at Home

The book I’m featuring today isn’t your average decorating book, far from it! But I think you’re going to agree that it’s pretty special. It’s definitely one of my faves and is one of the few books written about houses that usually gives me chills when I sit down to read it.

American Writers at Home

3 Things I Like About This Book:

  • Imagine getting to go inside the home of Emily Dickinson or William Faulkner. How about a visit to the home of Louisa May Alcott or Walt Whitman. This wonderful book takes us inside the homes of these and many more well-loved American authors. We get a chance to see where they worked and dreamed, where the novels and books of poetry we so love were created.
  • Every time I open this book and see the desks and work spaces where some of my favorite authors sat and worked, I get goosebumps. Some authors lived and worked in beautiful, elegant homes while other worked in much more austere surroundings. It may surprise you to see where your favorite authors lived and worked…it did me.
  • The authors whose homes we visit are: Louisa May Alcott, Kate Chopin Samuel Clemens better known as Mark Twain, Emily Dickinson, Frederick Douglass, Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Faulkner, Robert Frost, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ernest Hemingway, Washington Irving, Robinson Jeffers, Sarah Orne Jewett, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Herman Melville, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Flannery O’Connor, Eugene O’Neill, Eudora Welty, Edith Wharton and Walt Whitman.

  1. What a cool, cool book. I think I need to buy that as a gift for someone special to me. Thank you!

  2. Truly an amazing concept! I am sending this info to an aspiring author. (Rita is more generous than I 😉

  3. Okay, Susan, you have convinced me to buy one more book during my birth month. LOL! I usually treat myself to a few books for my birthday, but I think I have gone a little overboard with some of your recommendations. I will definitely have to buy another bookshelf. I love biographies and some of the aforementioned authors. If you do not already have it, you will love One Writer’s Garden: Eudora Welty’ s Home Place. It is a beautiful book with a flexible semi-hard cover. Also, it is a great gift for gardening friends. Another favorite within the last few years is Wait for Me: Memoirs of the Duchess of Devonshire (Deborah Mitford). I did not realize, until a few weeks ago, that she had passed away this past Fall. Of course, my entire Fall was spent taking care of my Mother who had a very bad case of shingles, so I was hardly aware of any current events. Thankfully, she is better now. Good weekend to you. Ashley

  4. Why don’t you see people with coffee table books like you used to? I used to keep Southern Living, from a whole year, on mine. But I got away from it. I think it started to feel messy because I kept a chessboard underneath. The table is round with a glass top and a mirrored second shelf that the board sat on. So I think I shall start looking for a nice set for my table as it sits empty.
