An Easy Way to Store and Display Your Summer and Winter Scarves

Welcome to the 686th Metamorphosis Monday!

Do you love wearing a scarf–a woolly warm scarf for winter, or an airy, bright scarf in the spring or summer? My winter scarves tend to get worn a lot more than my summer ones, probably because this girl can’t stand being cold for even a minute. lol I think I would wear my summer scarves a lot more if I had them displayed in my closet where I could actually see them more easily, instead of tucked down at one end of the closet on a scarf hanger.

In a previous post, I shared some small, silk Twilly scarves that I was in the process of steaming to remove wrinkles.  Twilly scarves are very small scarves that can be worn in the hair, around the neck, on the wrist, or on the handle of a handbag as a decoration or to protect the handle from sweat, lotion, or skin oils.

In that post, I also shared how I had been previously been storing the few scarves I have collected–in a little craft-type box with dividers. That method has worked okay but it took up shelf space in the cabinets where I love to store my bags and I couldn’t really see the scarves very well. I started thinking last week that there had to be a more pleasing/functional way to store them and I suddenly had an idea.

You may not have small Twilly scarves in your wardrobe but I’d thought I’d share this storage method because it could work for any type of scarf. In the cabinets where I store my handbags, most just sit on a shelf, and that works great for those bags.

But a few are displayed on decorative metal hangers designed for holding handbags. Fortunately, I only have three bags that need this type of storage. As I was noodling out a better way to store my small collection of Twilly scarves, it dawned on me that I could maybe place a small tension rod across the back of the cabinet to hold them. I purchased a small tension rod since the Ikea cabinet I’m using is only around 30 inches wide.

Removing the white Saddlebag that was hanging in the middle, we can see that I lucked out and the height of this particular shelf is just right for hanging Twilly and Mitzah scarves, including two longer Mitzah scarves in the center.

This is a great way to make use of that space in the very back of a closet, or in my case, a cabinet. Tension rods come in various lengths since they are often used for hanging curtains, shower curtains, and various other things. I purchased this small rod here: Tension Rod but you’ll find them in many different styles and lengths here: Tension Rods in Different Lengths.

Hope you found this idea helpful for hanging your scarves!

  1. I love taking a peek into your closet. Thanks so much for having us over, Susan, have a great week!

  2. any suggestions for storing the longer and wider scarfs for easy access.

    • Ellen, do you have a coat closet where you could place a longer/wider rod across the back? Or an armoire or wardrobe? Some of my wide ones, I have folded, but much prefer them hanging if you have room for a rod. They do make scarf rings for hanging in closets, but I’m not a fan of those since they end up all bunched together.

  3. Ah, and there it is….the beautiful Darjeeling Limited bag! Just curious to know whether you’ve ever had an occasion to use it? It’s absolutely fabulous!

    • Thanks, Debbie! It gets used a lot, in fact, I’ll be using it again soon. Every time I visit family in Ohio, I use it along with my Away luggage. I don’t use it for plane travel because it would get destroyed by the airlines, but it’s perfect for road trips.
If I were buying it again, I probably wouldn’t go with the monogramming option because it’s pretty expensive and whatever paint they used for the monogramming has sorta yellowed. Or, maybe the leather part of the bag is just showing through now. But I do love the bag itself, would love to order some of their other whimsical designs. I love the nautical designs!

  4. Great idea Susan! You have so many beautiful accessories! Thanks for the Monday ideas~

  5. You’ve given me a few ideas here, thanks!

  6. I only wear scarves on my purse during the summer. I should try a twilly scarf around my hair for summer!

  13. Such a genius way to store scarves! I love how you have everything organized. It’s totally goals. Hugs and thanks so much for hosting, CoCo

  14. Brilliant tension rod idea! I also have the IKEA (Billy) cabinets with glass doors for shoes and handbags, and wanted to use some of the space for storing my silk scarves in a way they wouldn’t crease. I am going to use your suggestion!
