Autumn Comes to the Porch

I’ve been playing outside today, bringing a little fall to the porch.  During the summer it looks something like this

a-summer-porch

Because the porch is all white (for the most part) it’s a blank slate for anything you can dream up.  For the 4th of July, it looked like this. (4th of July porch can be viewed here: Porch Decorated For the 4th of July)

It was time to add a little fall  to the porch.

The wall to the right of the swing definitely needed something. So I stole the wreath from my fall decorated mantle in the family room.

Some how Halloween crept out onto the porch.  Love the title of this book. It’s not about what you think it’s about.

I couldn’t decide what to do with the hutch.  It started out with a faux leaf garland across the top, but I eventually removed it.  It just felt a little too busy.  (Hutch painting tutorial can be found here: Paint a Hutch for the Porch)

Swapped the summer china on the hutch for plates with more of an autumn feel.

The fall floral arrangement on the door is the same one I used last year for fall. The only thing I purchased for fall this year was a lantern from Old Time Pottery.

This shabby, old chair holds a sunny red geranium all summer. Old chairs make great plant stands.

For fall, it’s sporting a sunshine yellow Chrysanthemum.

If you could grow sunshine in the garden, I’m pretty sure this is how it would look.

A view yesterday as the sun began to go down.  I feel an attack of hot cocoa coming on, don’t you?  The only question is, one dollop of whipped cream, or two?

Happy Fall!  See you tomorrow for Tablescape Thursday!

Once scoop or two? Are you kiddin' me??!?!?!! The answer is ALWAYS two!!!! 🙂 You've made a beautiful and graceful transition into the season. I just love how spacious and inviting your porch is. I have been bugging my husband for a screened in for years…to no avail. I shall prevail, though…mark my words! 🙂

  22. Sell WoW Accounts says

    that looks really nice!
i just wish we had a porch as beautiful as yours 🙂

  23. Everything is pretty, as always! But, I'm wondering, did the sunflowers end up in 3 vases (like in the last photo) or in the rooster? I'm thinking maybe in the 3 vases getting ready for a tablescape. And, maybe you have answered this previously in a post, but do you have real hardwoods on the porch, and if so, how do you protect them when it rains? Love the new lantern and the spooky looking book.

  24. Susan, your porch looks stunning any time of year. I think it's fun that you change things up for the seasons.
Fall would be my favorite time to relax on "the porch".

  25. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

Hi Penny, lol I was wondering if someone was gonna notice that. I started out yesterday placing three faux sunflowers in three tall bottles. I liked the look but I really didn't want to use faux sunflowers. So I bought a sunflower bunch today that included 3 flowers. When I got them home, their stems were too fat to fit in the bottles. So I decided to use them in a vase and the only vase they looked good in was Mr. Rooster. I do want to use the clear bottles in a tablescape sometime…something like I did for THIS tablescape.
About the flooring, it's pressure-treated, tongue and groove, KDAT pine flooring designed for porches. It's as thick as the hardwood flooring you have installed in homes…so it can be refinished lots of times if ever needed. KDAT means kiln dried after treatment…that's the process that removes most of the moisture out after it's pressured treated. It's both glued and nailed down and has 3 coats of poly on it. It sat with snow on it for three days once and weathered well. So, it's meant to take the abuse of the weather.

  26. Love your porch's summer look…I need a nap ;). All the white is so soothing.

  27. BTW, like the cross lantern, too.

  28. martinealison says

  29. Tombstone Livestock says

ok, just have to ask, where do you store all the stuff you rotate on and off porch? Basement, Attic? Love the porch, but that's a lot of different pillows, dishes, candlesticks, cushions, etc. to keep track of season to season. Not only would I need a lot of storage to do that I would need a maid and staff just to help pack and unpack it all. And an inventory clerk to keep track of where it is stored, lol. Keep up the good work, love it all.

  30. I wish I were as imaginative and creative as you! Your porch is so welcoming. Love your sunflowers and those yellow Chrysanthemums just brightened up your porch all the more! I will be on the look out for old chairs. Just think, I used to give them away to the Salvation Army and Goodwill, never even thought of using them as plant holders. Talk about not having any imagination…I learned so much from following your blog. Thank you.
    Wishing you well,
    Nenette West

  31. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

Tombstone, I do have a basement but store very little down there since I'm too lazy to go down to get it. The only pillows that are changed from spring to fall are the two on the swing…all the others are the same. For the 4th of July, those cushions are stored in the large linen closet in the upstairs hall. Two of pillows are the same ones you see on the swing in the summer, I just made covers for them.
The upstairs family room has a lot of storage up under the eves…I actually showed that in a post once. That was one of the things we loved about this house…lots of storage. Oh, the lanterns are stored in the garage. I don't store anything in the attic…again, just too much trouble to try to get to it.

  32. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

Nenette, thanks so much! You are so sweet…appreciate those kind words! 🙂

  33. Hi, Susan. Very pretty as always. After the beautiful summer colors this felt so calm and relaxing. You snuck the 3 sunflowers across the table in the last picture…I like that idea as well. And that yellow mum! Wow!

  34. Celindy Kellum says

love it! but i HAVE TO KNOW: WHERE DID YOU FIND THE MERCURY GLASS PUMPKIN??? it is beautiful!

thx for sharing your gift w/all of us!

  35. I feel the same way about sunflowers. You can't help but smile when you see them. Love the ones you found. Very different.

  36. J.Covington says

  38. Love it! I would love a space like this! I love the pumpkin on the urn like that- looks wonderful! I think I'll try mine on my champagne bucket! I wondered if anybody else noticed the sunflowers were different in the last picture (I see someone else commented)LOL and the garland is still on the hutch! (where's Waldo!)
I love your lanterns! I also have one with the Fleur-de-lis metal design in the glass area! Hmm…seems we have much in common at times!!

  39. What a cozy area to read and savor hot chocolate in. Make that hot chocolate with two BIG dollops of whipped cream!

  49. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

Nikki, thanks so much! I found those acorns at Hobby Lobby back in 2008. I first used them in THIS tablescape. Hobby Lobby is a great resource for seasonal decor.

  50. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

Celindy, I think I found it at Marshalls. It's been a year or two ago, so hard to remember now. I wasn't able to find them there this year. Pottery Barn had some, but they were a good bit more expensive. Ummm, wonder if they have gone on sale?

  51. Visions of Virginia says

It is always such a pleasure to visit with you and your porch. Cocoa and cocooning at home is very much needed now. Sunny, warm autumn days giving over to cool/cold nights is slowing turning the leaves. The garden slows down and so does the gardener! Thanks for another lovely post, Susan. Patty/BC
