Beautiful Christmas Banister

Recently, my friend Joy sent me a few pics of  her banister decorated for Christmas. When I saw the photos, I gasped!  It’s covered in hundreds of ornaments and took several hours to create…worth every moment!

I asked Joy how she created this stunning look and she said, “It’s two strands of garland wrapped in three strands of 100 lights. I work each strand individually and wrap it with the garland so that the cords don’t show.”

“Then I start placing the ornaments. I cluster small and medium ornaments together, similar to a cluster of grapes, and then add the larger ornaments as highlights.”

“Some of the larger ornaments are the same color and some are accent colors.”

“I’ve always used silver, red, and pearl ornaments, but this year, I added some touches of blue.”

Joy, thanks so much for sharing your beautiful banister decorated for Christmas. It’s breathtakingly beautiful!

  25. Alycia Nichols says

Wow!!! That took a LOT of work and patience and talent and skill…all the things that at this moment I doubt I have in comparison!!!! I have not put up one single decorative item inside for Christmas yet. No tree, no garland, no wreaths…nothing! I just can't catch the bug yet this year. I'm hoping to awaken tomorrow with a great deal of energy and imagination to fuel the decorative spirit. Here's hoping!

  26. Just beautiful!

  27. I wish I still had a bannister to decorate! I love this look. what a beautiful job!

  28. On Crooked Creek says

    Susan,
This bannister is gorgeous!!! your friend, JOY did a remarkable job with the color hues and all the bright lights! Sparkle for sure! Thanks for sharing!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  29. That is gorgeous!

  30. The colors are calming and high-end! Joy has a sophisticated eye! Love the details on the ornaments. Are they glass or plastic balls? I'm afraid I'll be a copy-cat on this one! It's just too beautiful!! Don't worry, I'll give Joy all the credit! Thanks for sharing Susan!

  31. I love your stairwell decorations! Did you use battery operated lights or plug-in? Thanks.

  32. They are plug-in lights. We had an outlet on our landing upstairs. This was the final year for this banister. In May, we moved to a single story house. I’m going to miss my banister this year.

  33. Beautiful! How are the ornaments attached to the garland?? I think I’m going to try this myself. 🙂

  34. The ornaments are just hung on there using normal ornament hooks. This year, if we were still in that house, I’d have had to do something different to secure them because we have a toddler.

  35. Susan, my respect to your friend! This is simply gorgeous! I’m trying my best to do something similar and so far I have bled from every single finger on both my hands!!lol ouch…would send you pictures but it’s to painful and just yucky!!lol…Your friend’s garland was sure a labor of love! Will let you know how mine ended up looking like…well other than Red All Over. !

    • Lizy, ouch! Had no idea it was so painful. That reminds me of when I made the shell chargers…had some sore fingers for a few days. I know it’s going to be beautiful when you’re finished. 🙂

  36. I need more direction. Did you double the purchased garland THEN wrap lights? I would love to tackle this project.

  37. Yes. I put the garland on first and them wrapped in lights. With my lights I traveled down and then back up with the lights, but carefully wrapped them so the cords were not obvious. The larger ornaments, medium ones, followed by small, and finally the bells.

  38. And yes, it’s two pieces of garland.

  39. Absolutely beautiful!!!!
I love reading your blog everyday. It makes my day.
Thanks for all your sharing and caring.

  40. Dianne Different says

This may be a dumb question but 2 garlands end to end OR side by side?
    Beautiful either way.

  41. It’s two pieces end to end. It overlaps just a little right in the middle.

  42. How many ornaments did you use??? This is absolutely stunning.

  43. I’m trying to do something new with my banister and love what your friend did. Can you tell me if she wraps the banister or just lays it on the top of it?
    Thank you
    Nedra

  44. Wow! Simply gorgeous!!
