Beautiful, Hand-Painted Morning Glory China Sparks a Very Special Memory

Welcome to the 710th Tablescape Thursday!

I’m posting Tablescape Thursday a bit early this week and I have a beautiful, heartfelt table setting to share with you. Elena, a lovely BNOTP reader and friend wrote, “We had friends over for dinner on Wednesday this week. This was my first chance to use my Christmas gift from my husband, “Morning Glory” dinner plates, hand-made and hand-painted in Hungary.”

Anna Weatherley, Morning Glory China, Beautiful Table

“The design is by Hungarian fine china artist, Anna Weatherley.”

Morning Glory Dinnerware

“My mom’s favorite flowers were beautiful blue Morning Glories; she lovingly tended the vines in the yard of our tiny house on a steep hill in Globe, Arizona. I was just a toddler then, but I still remember. I wanted the Morning Glory plates because they remind me of my mom, rest in peace.”

“Then I realized that the Morning Glory plates are from Anna Weatherley and the chargers are from Annie Glass. My dearest sister, Anna, died five years ago, she was a heart transplant patient; her transplanted heart lasted 17 years, but eventually, that heart gave out. When Anna was a little girl, everyone called her Annie. So this table is a tribute to both my mom and my beloved sister, Anna–my beautiful Annie.”

What precious memories this lovely china (and table setting) hold for Elena, her family and friends.

Gold Chargers with Morning Glory China

This hand-painted pattern is so detailed and beautiful! I looked to see if this dinnerware is still available and it is. I found it here: Morning Glory by Anna Weatherley.

I love the beautiful linen tablecloth Elena chose for this special dinner. The scalloped edge is so pretty!

Matouck Mirasol Auzre Linen Tablecloth

The tablecloth and napkins are from Matouk Mirasol Azure. (Matouk Mirasol linens are available here: Matouk Mirasol Linens. I was also able to find the tablecloth here: Mirasol Tablecloth.)

Matouk Mirasol Azure Napkins

Elena chose her vintage Wallace sterling and gold flatware, Romance of the Sea, a 25th-anniversary gift from her hubby. I’ve never seen this pattern before and it is stunning! Sooo elegant!

For this table, Elena chose these beautiful gold-rimmed glasses from Venice, Italy, and her Waterford Crystal Sullivan water goblets.

Elena placed a second napkin underneath the scalloped Matouk napkins–a napkin embroidered with Morning Glory flowers.

Embroidered Napkins, Morning Glory Pattern

How perfect are these beautiful napkins with her Morning Glory dinnerware! (Napkins are available in sets of 4 here: Morning Glory Napkins.)

I can just imagine how enchanting this table must have been when the candles down the center were all lit and glowing!

Elena, thanks so much for sharing this very special, elegant table setting with us. I know your Mom and Sister were looking down with so much love and I know you surely felt them there in spirit as you so beautifully honored their memory with your friends and family.

Morning glory embroidered dinner napkins from Zazzle
Gold sparkle napkin rings from Z Gallerie
Gold rimmed wine glasses from Venice Italy
Waterford Crystal Sullivan water goblets
Vintage Wallace sterling and gold flatware, “Romance of the Sea” (a 25th-anniversary gift from my husband)
Centerpiece candles and candle holders from the At Home store. I chose very simple low profile centerpiece items; I didn’t want anything to compete with the beautiful plates.

  1. What a beautiful table! That China is stunning. My mom too loved Morning Glories. I can remember her helping me plant some seeds by our porch one spring and they graced us with their beautiful blooms all summer. Everything about this elegant table is just gorgeous. Thank you for sharing.

    • Thank you so much. After my husband gave me the plates for Christmas, I was worried I wouldn’t be able to find just the perfect linens to go with them. I was so happy and thankful that I found the Matouk Mirasol Azure linens and the morning glory napkins from Zazzle.

Everything is so beautiful and meaningful!

  3. This is such a lovely pattern. It brings memories of my childhood as well. It was my Uncle Artie who loved morning glory and I remember a beautiful vine growing right beside his back door. To this day, it makes me smile.

  4. Biodynamic Barb says

Oh, wow! Beautiful! But waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of my price range!

  5. Just beautiful! What a lovey tribute to her family and I’m sure it was a very special night for everyone. I’d love to know what the menu was. 🙂

    • I kept the menu simple: filet mignon steaks, a help-yourself loaded baked potato bar, broccoli, sweet corn, and raspberry cheesecake for dessert. My husband did a great job with the steaks, . We first seared the steaks on both sides in hot cast iron skillets, 2-3 minutes on each side, then put the skillets in a 425 degree oven to finish cooking for 5 to 7 minutes. Then we let the steaks rest under foil for about 5 minutes before serving. The steaks came out PERFECTLY medium rare. This is how fancy steak house restaurants cook steaks, they don’t use a barbecue grill.

What a beautiful tablesetting–and even more beautiful is the way the pieces become a tribute and bring back memories of the special ladies! Enjoy–find more occasions to set the table and reflect on happy memories.

  7. Everything is beautiful. The plates are exquisite and made even more beautiful since they represent the precious memories of Elena’s Mother and sister. Elena’s husband is a treasure!

    • Yes he is! I am a lucky and blessed wife!

    • I forgot to include something when I sent the photos to Susan: My husband bought me the sterling and gold version of “Romance of the Sea” flatware for our 25th anniversary. There is a pure sterling version of this pattern. I told my husband if he was going to get me something nice for our Silver Anniversary, I really truly wanted the gold and sterling version of this flatware. My husband and I married late in life, and we probably won’t make it together to our Golden Anniversary. We would both have to live to be 90 years old. So this flatware is a celebration of both our 25th and 50th anniversaries.

  8. Jane Kelly says

So exquisite! But wow – one plate costs more than my entire set of china I bought out of the Spiegel catalog when I first got married LOL! I would be afraid to eat off of it and wash it!

  9. franki parde says

How beautiful and enchanting!!! The china is absolutely beautiful…thanx for sharing tablescape & memories!! franki

  10. Beautiful….

  11. That morning glory china is beautiful, especially with the gold chargers.

  12. Maureen says

Exquisite table! Elena has impeccable taste. Anna Weatherly China is an investment and a heirloom to pass down to the next generation. The linens are beautiful and do complement the China. I would love to be a quest at Elena’s table. Enjoy Elena!

  13. Thank you to Elena for sharing her beautiful table…..the tribute to her beloved Mother and sister brought tears. Gorgeous! I live in Phoenix, and have never been able to grow morning glories here….it must be a little cooler in Globe for them to grow there.

    • I love blue morning glories also, and there aren’t that many true intense blue flowers. Globe is 8 to 10 degrees cooler than the Phoenix area (where I live), and even in the hottest part of the summer, Globe does cool off at night (unlike Phoenix!). Globe seemed to be the perfect temperature for my mom’s morning glories.

  14. Marlene says

What a stunning table. Perfection but the memory of your mother and sister is truly what makes it so special. What a special table to share with your friends and loved ones.

  15. What a stunning dining table in every way! And the memories attached, priceless. Thank you so much for sharing. And I’d say that man is a keeper!

    • LOL, Cathy, I’ve told my husband many times that if he ever leaves me, I’ll have to go with him. :0)

  16. This table setting is a beautiful tribute to Elena’s marriage and her family. Her attention to detail is impeccable. Thanks so much for sharing!

  17. Oh, Elena, this made me cry. What a beautiful story and lovely tribute.

    • Thank you Pam. I do get choked-up and tearful about my sister Anna, she was only 63 years old when she died. Also, her life after the heart transplant was never easy. My mom was 92 when she died, she had extraordinarly good health her entire life, but at age 92 it was her time to pass. I think about them often.

      • Elena, I had a similar situation. I lost a sister to breast cancer and my mom also lived a healthy life into her 90s. She would probably still be alive today if she hadn’t broken her hip. It’s hard losing people, I know. I also know that fortunately, you have a loving husband and family – and that helps you face the challenges of life.

  18. An absolutely exquisite table, Elena! Be still my heart! Your dinnerware is beyond words and you’ve honored it perfectly!

  19. I always look forward to Thursday mornings to see what beautiful tables you are bringing us, AND all of the lovely tables people are linking up!

  20. Such a beautiful table Elena shared, those plates and napkins are almost too pretty to use! I’m sure her guests felt very honored! Thank you Susan and Happy Mother’s Day!

  21. Rosie S says

    Gorgeous!!!!

  22. The morning glory china is stunning and the story behind it makes it even more beautiful. The lovely napkins are the cherry on top. It’s truly a lovely table & thank you for sharing it with us. Have a wonderful Mother’s Day Susan. XO- MaryJo

  23. Those plates and linens are FABULOUS! I too LOVE morning glories and grow them every year. My memories of them growing in the corner of cornfields and I would pick them every morning as I waited for the bus when I was a child. I have a mix of the blue, purple, pink and white that all cover a huge trellis on my back deck.

    But the plates are spectacular!

  24. Oh that’s beautiful! It’s so nice of Elena and you to share – I love the sweet stories, and that lovely table! What a thoughtful husband too. Thanks to both of you. ♥

  25. What a gorgeous table Elena has set and that morning glory china is just stunning! Love the beautiful linens as well. Her guests must have felt very special indeed. Thank you Susan and Elena for sharing! Happy Mother’s Day to you both!

  26. It is simply stunning perfection…

  27. Elena’s table setting is just stunning, the morning glory china is stunning, it is all stunning! I’m so glad she was able to honor her mother and sister with this table setting. Simple elegance in all it’s glory! Hugs, Brenda
