Dremel Deserves a Crown

Welcome to the 156th Metamorphosis Monday!

Greetings Friends!  I hope you’ve been having a marvelous weekend!  I have a mini-metamorphosis to share for this Met Monday, but before I letcha see what I’ve been up to, I want to share a big change Blogger made recently, a change that made this girl very happy.

Mini-Metamorphosis:
I’ve been dremeling.  Yep, I’m using that word as a verb today.  You may remember I recently shared a post called “Fun Stuff Worth Sharing” which included, among other things, a wee addition to the office.

The addition was this little mercury-glass and silver crown I found at Marshalls about 1-2 months ago for just $12.99.  I had been thinking about adding a crown to the top of the dress form for a while, but most were a bit more than I wanted to spend.  The only problem with the crown I found was it had a rather large hanging loop attached to the top.  I guess it was supposed to be an ornament, although, it is so heavy a Christmas tree branch would most certainly droop under its weight.

I really wanted to get rid of the hanging loop so I tried to cut it off with some heavy duty ceramic cutters I already had.  No going.  The cutters weren’t even making a dent.

About a year or so ago I was cruising around one of my fave stores, the Home Depot, and I came across this Dremel set on sale.  I had no idea how I was going to use it, but I thought it might come in handy when I began renovating a vintage dollhouse that adopted me a few years ago.  I used the Dremel recently to do a little sanding on the dollhouse in THIS post.  (Still haven’t painted the dollhouse trim…it’s on my to-do list, though.)

When I posted about my “loop” dilemma, Labbie (who blogs at The Adventures of Garrett Squared) suggested using a Dremel.  Duh!  Why hadn’t I thought of that?

I got out my trusty Dremel and sure enough, there was a “cutting” attachment that looked like it just might do the job.  I didn’t have any safety glasses so I wore my dorky sunglasses I bought at Wally World a while back.  They are curved and designed to fit over regular eyeglasses, which is good since I wear those most days (since I’m on the computer a lot) instead of my contacts.  The sunglasses worked well for shielding and protecting my eyes since they curved right up to my face, but they made it sort of tricky for seeing.  lol  I recommend wearing real safety glasses when using a Dremel.

I cut from both sides of the loop and I snapped this pic below right before I cut the last teeny thread of metal holding the loop on top.  It worked great!

I attached this little tool to the Dremel and sanded down the top edge a bit to make it nice and smooth.

And here she is, back in place.

Come a bit closer and check it out.

Loopless and much better!

So, that’s my wee metamorphosis.   Do you have a Dremel?  If so, what have you been using it for?  I’m sure there are a 101 things I could be doing with mine that I just haven’t thought of, yet.

Oh, I almost forgot…another change I made this week that really seemed to help was I moved the lamp to the other side of the chest.  I kept thinking I needed it right beside the chair to read, but I decided to try it over on the other side and it looks so much better.  It seems to balance out the space much better this way.  And I can see to read just fine.  Lesson learned:  you don’t always have to have the lamp on the side where the chair is located to see to read.

Looking forward to all the Before and Afters for this Metamorphosis Monday!

Oh what a sweet pic of Chip as a boy! Did you make those jammie for him and for his Christmas bear? SO CUTE!

I think that effect is really neat. I would love to see the side by side comparison.

Grats of perfect use of your Dremel – my husband has one and swears by it.

I back away nervously from all power tools, I am a big baby. I applaud your courage!

  8. LOVE your bust form and the crown just is fabulous! I have a half form that I need to freshen up. Thanx for hosting!

  9. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Michele, You wouldn't be afraid of the Dremel…it's small and not too scary. It's more like a mini-power tool. No, didn't make the jammies…but it cracked me up how similar they were to his Teddy Ruxpin's pjs.

  10. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Thanks, Karen! So glad Labbie suggested it. It's amazing what it (Dremel) can do.

    xoxo laurie

  16. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Thanks, Laurie! The clock was an inexpensive find from Marshalls a few months back. They had it in several styles. I wasn't sure if I would keep it but I really liked how it looked in the office and it keeps great time! I was really surprised at that. lol

  17. Rosemary@villabarnes says

Love the bust with the crown. Thanks for hosting.

  18. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Thanks, Christine! You'll find lots of uses for it once you start using it.

  24. Just found your site and love your post. I am attracted to the "Bee" pillow in the chair. Can you share where you found it? My daughter has bees decor in her home and I would love to make buy one for her. Thanks, [email protected]

  25. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Thanks! I found the bee pillow at a Ballard Designs Outlet here in GA. They are currently on sale right now at the Ballard Designs online site for around the same price I paid at the outlet. 🙂 Here's the link: http://www.ballarddesigns.com/bee-pillow/12190

  27. Okio B Designs says

That crown is gorgeous! I don't have a Dremel but if my husband had one, I'd definitely use it!

    Jeanine

  28. I love your room!! Thank you for passing along the info about the comments. I wasn't aware of this; it's a good thing. I love my Dremel and use it more than any other tool I have. When I'm in "jewelry making mode" I use it several times a day for grinding.
    Thanks for hosting every week:-)

  29. Karah @ thespacebetweenblog says

I wish I had an all in one, I have a dremel sander with some really handy attachments. But it's in storage, didn't make the more to the Caribbean. 🙁 I am feeling quite star struck that you've stopped by my little blog and left such a nice comment on my pallet art. I Love your link party, your readers are always very supportive of my projects. I'm happy to be following you all over blog world. 🙂 Thanks again!

  30. Carlene @ Organized Clutter says

Do you know if the comment reply setting works on the old interface?

  31. Betsy@ coastal-colors says

Thanks for the info. on Blogger Buzz! Your mini metamorphosis looks great! Thanks for hosting this link party! It's always fun to see such great ideas!

  32. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Carlene, that's a good question. I had been using the old interface until I read about the comment threading feature at Blogger Buzz. Now that you mention it, I wasn't able to find the settings tab it mentioned in Blogger Buzz until I switched over to the New Interface. I'm pretty sure you could switch to the new interface just long enough to click on the "embedded" setting and anything else you need to do to add the threaded comment feature. Then you could probably just switch back to the old interface and I think it would still work. I didn't switch back this time, and just stayed with the new interface. It's taking a little getting used to, but I'm gradually learning my way around it. It's working very well…just takes a little practice since things look a bit different.

  33. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Aww, thanks Karah! Appreciate you sharing your talents for Met Monday!

  34. The Polka Dot Closet says

thank you fro the info, it just showed up on my blog and I was trying to figure out what it was….I knew some fabulous blogger would explain it and that was you! Oh, I linked up, thank you for hosting!!

    Carol

  35. Hey nice to be here in one of my all time favorite blogs ever and one of the first I started following. I love your insights and I personally love the old interface I guess I am a plane Jane I tried it and it would not run with internet explorer which is the one I run on my desktop big screen computer so had to switch it back. I might try that comment thing though sounds AWESOME. thanks so much for all you do. I have a word press but just like Blogger better 🙂 cheers.
    Shel

  36. Susan, I have a dremel tool also that I have never used. I don't remember even why I bought it….just remember I had to have it. You have inspired me to get it out and find a project to use it on.

  37. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Shel, I was an IE girl forever and ever…but once I tried Google Chrome, I loved it. It works really well with gmail and everything loads soooo much faster. Plus, Blogger works great with it, too. I also resisted the new interface, tried it and switched right back. It's actually more user friendly than it seems at first…just takes some time figuring out how to use it. I really like that when I go in to add or edit a post, I don't have to scroll alllll the way to the bottom of the post to click publish again…just click update right there at the top and I'm done. Plus, if you flip over to the html view to make a change, which I do a lot, when you flip back to the compose view, the screen is right where you left it, instead of back at the top of the post again. It's those little things that are making the interface much more enjoyable. Those are the things that you don't discover until you use it a bit. Just sharing this in case you find it helpful. I'm discovering I don't like change sometimes. lol But sometimes it is better.

  38. ❁Velma ~Down Our Country Road❁ says

Hmmm…wonder what hubby would think if I asked for a Dremel set? I'm like you, I'm not sure exactly what I would be using it for but it would be nice to have when I do need it.
As far as the new comment thread…does it work kind of like a forum where you have to come back to the original post's comment section to see what is being said?

  39. I do have a dremel, for 10 years! Never used it, lol. Someday!

As for the new feature…is the answer emailed to the person? I never remember to go back and look for an answer, but i have an email they can respond to. Some people have the no reply addy, so no way to answer them.
I know one blogger did a post about having trouble with the new feature. All too techie for me!

  40. The Wallace Family says

My husband also has one and swears by it!! Thanks to the help of that little dremel we have a pretty nice backsplash in our kitchen:)

  41. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Velma, I think you do have to come back to see the reply. I'm not sure if it has a box to check that let's you know a reply or comment has been left, like you see on some blogs.

  42. Jane@Cottage at the Crossroads says

Aw, your son looked so cute in his pj's with his teddy bear. No wonder you couldn't part with the bears. The dremel looks like a tool I need to put on my list of things I'd like to have someday. I wanted to mention that I have a WordPress blog-only because my step-sons set me up on one. Let me know if you have some questions about WP.

  43. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Kathleen, I think you do have to come back to see the reply…don't think it's emailed to you. Also, you may have to switch to the new interface just long enough to click on the setting to activate the reply feature…then you can probably switch back to the old interface if you wish. I'm not positive if it will work with the old interface, but I think it will.

  44. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Jane, Thanks! And thanks for the help offer…will call on ya if I make the switch. 🙂

  45. Karla Medina says

First time seeing your office and i'm in love. Simple but so beautiful. Thanks for hosting 🙂

  46. Designs By Pinky says

HI Susan, I love the pic of Chip and his Teddybear. It brings back memories of my son, and then he JUSY CALLED!!! he is living in Fl. right now so I don't see him much at all. I promise to join in next week. I have been so busy I haven't blogged in days. XO, Pinky

  47. Thanks for hosting us! Looking forward to trying the new commenting form on my blog! Thanks for telling us!
    Amanda

  48. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Good to know they work for that, too!

  49. Barb @ GritsandGlamour says

Susan, I have a similar dress form up in my guest room. She's a beauty just like yours. 🙂 I had to put her away though because she scares my Grandson who sleeps in that room when he stays over to Grammy's house. Maybe soon she can come back out to play. Love the crown, it was the "crowning" effect. Hope you are well. Barb

  50. Kelly @ JAX does design says

The sketch effect photo is so cool! I wonder if my Nikon has that feature… I'll have to check.

Your office is so bright and fresh, and the crown is the perfect finishing touch to your dress form. I love the big wall clock 🙂

I'm trying to set the new Blogger comment feature on my blog, but I can't seem to find the links I'm supposed to click to get it set up. Sometimes computers drive me crazy!

  51. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Kelly, I couldn't find the settings either at first…I was still using the old interface. I think you have to switch to the new interface to add the new comment thing or at least that's the way I did it. You can probably switch back to the old interface once you're done…I think it will still work with the old interface, but not positive.

  52. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Awww, Barb, that is so cute. I can see how a dress form might scare a little one.

  53. Fox Hollow Cottage says

I love your office space. It's so beautiful and that clock is devine!
Thanks so much for hosting. Hope you had a wonderful weekend.

  54. Susan, you make me smile as you get out your tools and make everything work. I confess, I did not know what a Dremel was, my excuse is I have my built-in handyman and he has all the tools, I just feed him cakes!! 🙂
Your lady looks lovely in her crown and I agree with you on the lamp placing.
I do like the new threads as we can interact with one another.

  55. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Thanks, Megan! The thread comment system is definitely a huge improvement.
That's pretty good payment, cakes. I'd work for cakes. lol

  56. Such a cute little fellow — precious photo.

I have had a Dremel for a long time, and it comes in handy for some of the most unusual things.

  57. I love that crown. And what in the world did we do without Dremmels? I used mine like crazy this summer when we redid a bathroom…great for cleaning & sanding out grooves in cabinetry before painting.

Thanks for hosting. Always enjoy your blog.

    {HUGS},
    kristi

  58. Oh Susan! That is Teddy Ruxpin with Chip! I LOVED him, more than my son did, I think. Do you know they still make one? I can't wait for a grandbaby, so I can get him. My son fell asleep to him and his stories every single night. Thanks so much for such a wonderful trip down memory lane for me.
    Hugs, Lisa

  59. the crown is a great (and royal) touch! … love my dremel! i got it last year for christmas and my husband couldn't believe to see me so happy with "just a tool" … ehm… just a tool??? excuse me??? 😉 xox, d.

  60. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Lisa, Yep, you're right…it is a Teddy Ruxpin. I hope they still make him, but I'm not sure.

  61. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

They have them on Amazon that are "like new" for $99. That's not a bad price considering how rare they are now. They were pretty pricey even back when they were still being made…so that is actually a pretty good deal.

  62. Hi Susan, It must be fairly easy to add the reply "bit" to comments as I managed to do it a few days ago and I am hopeless at anything like that as you know!! I printed off the instructions from Blogger Buzz for "Threaded comments" and followed them and it works!!

" If you have commenting on your blog, then threaded commenting will work provided you have your blog feed set to "full" and have chosen the "Embedded" option as opposed to "Full page" or "pop up window". To change the commenting settings, just go to the Comments section under settings/Posts and comments. The settings to change your blog feed can be found under Setting/Other"
If I can do it anyone can!!

My grandson has a lovely toy puppy called scout,( available from Amazon UK) he has a chip in it so my daughter has programmed it with his name etc.. It has a foot that when pressed plays sleepy music and he always seems to go to sleep to this.

Your study looks great and whatever the tool is it has worked well to get rid of the hook on the crown. Have a great week, Jackie in Surrey, UK.

  63. Susan, You are always in the know and so helpful. Thanks for all the advice you give. Oh and now I want a dremel!

  64. DearHelenHartman says

As always your decor and images are breathtaking! But the best is the Teddy Ruxpin Christmas. Too cute. Thank you for hosting MM.

  65. Rebekah Greiman says

Good morning! I've linked up my tutorial on Pickling Jalapeno Peppers. They can be mild or hot, depending on your preference. And they last forever! Hope you enjoy and thanks for hosting the party again. Have a great week!

  66. Gloria (The Little Red House with the White Porch) says

Happy New Year, Susan! I haven't commented in so long, I hope you had a nice Christmas and New Year. Thanks for this info on threaded commenting! I am going to do it today. Love the new crown, and I have a few of those little wreaths you have on the mirror. I'm so lazy, I never hung them up yet. 🙂
Love the photo of your son too! Aren't our old photos of the kids the best…
    Take care,
    Gloria

  67. Sharing Shadymont says

    Susan,

As always, thanks for hosting Met Monday. Your office inspires me so much. That will be a project for me once I retire (March 30). Can't wait to have more play time. Have a great week.

  68. Pam~ Virginia Retro says

Really beautiful, I especially like the huge clock on the wall. The sketch photo is great! I'm a fairly new and simple blogger, my blogs are not near as grand as the others, but I've enjoyed joining in here a few times, and also for Tablescape Thursday. Glad I found you!

  69. Hello Susan,
My husband has a dremel – and you've just given further proof to my notion that we women need our own set of tools!
I saw some of these crowns at the Country Living Fair – they seemed to be pretty popular – very clever to put it atop the dress form. Thanks again for hosting. I hope you have a fantastic week,
    Kathy

  70. Love your dollhouse! I've got one that I'm hoping to get started on soon. I know that you'll inspire me! 🙂

  71. You are SO handy, Susan & not afraid to tackle anything. Power tools scare me! ~shudder~
Nice job on the crown redo!

I loved seeing Chip with his teddy bear & I know exactly what you mean about 'the little things' that matter.

    Hugs,
    Rett

  72. Lizabeth @ Infuse With Liz says

Looks really great! You did a good job! Dremels are awesome! Love the picture of Chip with Teddy Ruxpin! I forgot that name entirely!

  73. Lisa Nelsen-Woods says

I have a Dremel. I get the most use out of the cutting wheels. I used it to cut my downspout and install a rain barrel.

  74. I love your office, so beautiful, and the crown was the "crowning" touch. Thanks for hostessing the party! Hugs ~ Mary

  75. Joy@aVintageGreen says

Your office/craft room invites one right in, it is so beautiful and such a big change too. Thanks for hosting. Love the Teddy Bear pictures too.

  76. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Jackie, the puppy sounds so cute…perfect for bedtime. 🙂

  77. Laura Wilkerson says

I just love this room and watching each metamorphosis big and small. Just wondering if youve done any embroidering or sewing lately?

  78. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Not yet…but I keep thinking about it. I need to carve out a day to play with the machine and learn the process. 🙂

  79. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Terry, they do come in handy!

  80. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

    🙂

  81. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Lisa, really? Never realized you could do something like that with a little Dremel. Amazing! Maybe we should have a "Dremel" party and everyone can show what they have done with their Dremel.

  82. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

    Thanks, Joy!

  83. Ashley Lynn says

LOVE your blog! And I tagged you in a post at my blog! http://ashleyslittlenook.blogspot.com/

  84. Kristin @ My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia says

This is just gorgeous as well as that beautiful clock! I love our dremel. The hubs uses it for a ton of things I love it for the fact that I can add the sander and get into tiny little areas with it. On my way to link up, thanks for hosting!
    XO
    Kristin

  85. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Thanks, Kristin! I was amazed how many different types/sizes of sanding attachments there are for the Dremel.

  86. FABBY'S LIVING says

Your Chip was so adorable and yeah, I can understand the nostalgia. We have a drumel too, hubby uses it more. I loved your post Susan and the little mercury glass crown sure had to go home with you, I don't blame you. I love it where you put and that clock is great! Thank you for hosting. Hugs,
    FABBY

  87. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

    Thanks, Fabby!

  88. I will check it out, I would put one in the closet to save. Did you save Chip's?
    Thanks again,
    Lisa

  89. I should get one to save. Thanks again Susan!
    Lisa

  90. Entertaining Women says

Dremel is indeed a wonderful tool. I used to design and make lamps. I used mine so much that it finally died. I have a gazillion attachments, but I need to replace the tool. Did you buy the stand that lets the tool be used almost like holding a pencil? It's worth the purchase…especially when working on small objects. I've kind of looked with a leery eye at the button that gives me the option to change to the new blogger format. Mainly I'm frustrated that I can't seem to delete my current background template to change to another one. Cyber world…a steep learning curve here. Still loving that sketch book effect on your D5100. Cherry Kay

  91. Drama Mama Lori says

Susan, I can't imagine living without my dremel and I know it's capable of more than I'll ever use it for!

I did have a Blogger question and I thought you might have the scoop for me. Since the moment the comment/reply change was launched, all of my pages go directly to the bottom of the page or to the comment box (that's only if I open a blog – not all web pages.) I opened up your blog (and all others) and it happens every time! Anyone else?

Thanks for hosting, I just linked up! – Lori

  92. I also use blogger. One day last week the reply option just appeared on my blog. I was a little confused at first wondering when in world did that happen, but I'm so glad. It makes it much easier to answer questions and talk to my readers!

  93. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Cherry Kay, Do you have one of those new templates? I'm not sure how or if you can switch back. When those first came out, some folks were saying on the Blogger help forum that they couldn't switch back. Check the forum to see if there have been updates. Just type in your question in the search box and maybe someone there will have a solution. Wish I knew what to tell you.

  94. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

I don't know..hadn't encountered that before. That is strange. Check the Blogger help forum to see if anyone is talking about that. I find a lot of help over on the forum when I have a problem. Chances are someone else has had the problem and solved it.

  95. Beth @Under A Pile of Scrap! says

The corner of this room is so pretty and spring-like! Somewhere I have a Dremel, but I can't seem to find it, but I so need to. I could use it for some of the same thing you did. I noticed the Reply/Delete option on my blogger blog the other day too, and I KNOW I didn't do anything to add it. I like it a lot too!

  96. Lisa - A Room with A View says

Thank you for hosting and for the update from Google..so much going on it is difficult to keep up with all the changes. I do love what you did with the dressform; it is quite unique.

  97. DallyGirl @ Lifeat2810 says

I am really glad Blogger did this. However, I have been using Disqus and when I removed that from my blog, all of the comments look like they are from me instead of my readers. Did you by chance encounter any information about that in your reading/research?

  98. Thanks so much for hosting. Great that blogger has added the reply to comments feature – think they're still ironing out the kinks – can't get into my comments since the update!!

  99. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

That's got to be frustrating. You may need to email/contact Disqus and asked them what to do to fix that. Hopefully they can tell you how to fix it. I almost added Disqus to my blog so many times in the past. I hope Disqus can help you solve that.

Hi, Susan. What a cute picture of Chip….to think he's an attorney now! 🙂 (Does he know his cute little picture of him is up?! 🙂 ) Thanks for continuing to keep the rest of us informed and trained on Blogger. It seems to not be cooperating today; I haven't been able to visit several blogs. But it's great when it's working!! ~Zuni

Thanks for hosting the party! AND, thanks for the advice about Blogger. Gotta check that out!

  104. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Zuni, lol I doubt it. That's what happens when your Mom has a blog. She gets all sentimental. What blogs are you trying to visit and can't access? That's scary! Clear your cache and see if that helps.

  105. Thank you for hosting the party.

    Have a great week.

  110. Hi Susan,
Thanks for the info on comments. I just answered a question regarding my pergola. A follower asked if I dated or put a hand print into the cement. I was so happy to answer and I just love this new feature in blogger.
    Thanks again
    Betty
P.S. I have a dremel and I love it so much.

  111. Shirley Hailstock says

I love th story about the Dremel. I want one. I've been doing home improvements and seen the Dremel used on DIY Network. I went to check the price and they are very expensive, at least to me. Until I come up with something that really needs one, I'll have to wait. But thanks for telling me about their use. And I love the crown.

  112. I had just put this feature you speak of on all my blogs when I read on another blog that some people using internet explorer and some using firefox or is it foxfire (I forget!) were having problems placing comments when you have this application running. So this blog said to go back to the pop-up blog until blogger gets it fixed. She said some people could comment , but others could not and that until blogger got it fixed not to use it. So I changed it back…I will have to check for more news on this!

  113. Farmer's Wyfe says

I tried changing my blog so I could reply to comments, but when I hit "reply" nothing happens. Does this happen to anybody else or do you know if I did something wrong?

  114. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Try rebooting and if that doesn't work, you may want to download Google Chrome, if you don't have it on your computer. IE and some other browsers don't seem to work too well with Blogger lately…not sure why. Hope that helps.

  115. Hi Susan! Just happened onto this very old post and find I have a question about that crown atop your dress form: How do you get it to stay on without toppling off? It is a perfect fit for the top! Thank you!
