Breakfast with Villeroy & Boch’s Melina & A Yummy Fruit Tart

Welcome to the 630th Tablescape Thursday, a blog party sharing beautiful table settings for all occasions.

Many, many years ago, actually, it’s probably been around 35 years now, I got the itch for some new everyday china. I don’t remember now how I came across Villeroy & Boch’s Melina pattern, but it was love at first sight. I think I came across it one day while shopping in either Macy’s or Rich’s.

V & B Melina was definitely out of my budget back then so I remember I used one of the store’s 12-month no interest, payment plans to buy 12 place settings and a number of serving pieces.

Melina was my everyday pattern for around 20 years. It lives in view full-time here in my kitchen so I still use it occasionally, just not as much as I once did since it’s so hard to find now if a piece gets broken.

I love to use it for breakfast whenever family is here visiting. It just feels like a great breakfast pattern to me, not that it’s not great for other meals, too.

Today we’re imagining a breakfast with all the fixings including a yummy fruit tart. By the way, you’ll notice a roving cup in a couple of photos. I flipped over a saucer to take a photo of the back so I wouldn’t misspell Villeroy & Boch when I created the post and apparently, I forgot to put the cup back. Argggh! So please ignore the randomly placed cup in some of the photos. lol

Like this one. lol

Many years ago when Rachel Ray’s cooking show had just become super popular, she did a show where she took her viewers back to where she used to work before becoming famous. One of those places was The Sagamore Resort. I remember she was somehow involved with helping run the restaurant. Anyway, I was so surprised when they showed the restaurant because the china on all the tables was Villeroy & Boch, Melina. I think at one time during the show, Rachel sat down at one of the tables to talk and you could clearly see Melina on the table. I tried to find that video online to refresh my memory and to link back to it, but was unable to find it. Does anyone else remember that particular show?

One of the things I love about the Melina pattern is how all the pieces are trimmed out with a pretty green rim.

After all these years, I still love this pattern.

Several years back I found these cute little egg cups on eBay. The glasses are from Williams Sonoma around 20-25 years ago.

Each glass has a different fruit pattern and they came in a set of six.

The green and white gingham napkins and the green, velvet-edges napkins are from Pier 1 several years back. The green beaded napkin rings may be from Pier 1, or they could be Old Time Pottery. I’ve had them so long, I don’t remember now.

Pass me your plate and I’ll cut you a big slice of this fruit tart. It’s from Publix and truthfully, it’s more like a dessert than a breakfast tart. Under all those layers, there’s a cookie-like base that’s coated in chocolate on both sides. So it’s basically like a crunchy, chocolate-covered cookie, topped with custard and fruit. The little, round brown things around the edge are also chocolate. It’s very tasty! My favorite part is the custard under all the fruit. lol

I need to bring you up on all the goings-on around here. It’s been very busy since I arrived back home with pneumonia a few weeks ago. Thankfully, I’m fully over the pneumonia I came down with in Ohio–that took about three weeks total. During that time, I still got a lot done. It takes more than pneumonia to slow me down. lol I’ll share more in this coming Metamorphosis Monday.

If you are participating in Tablescape Thursday, please be sure to add your permalink below, and not your general blog address. To get your permalink, click on your post name, then copy and paste the address showing in the address bar, into the “url” box when you link up. You’ll need to include a link in your post back to the party to link up and participate.

That’s so visitors to your blog will be able to find the party and the other Tablescape Thursday participants. Requiring a link back also prevents businesses and scammers from linking up to sell their products. (Yep, that really happens, unfortunately.) If you see a post that’s not table setting related, let me know and I’ll remove it.

Please, don’t add your post name/blog name ALL IN CAPS…it tends to create big spaces between the rows of links.

Please link up table setting or table setting related posts only for Tablescape Thursday.

  1. Your table looks beautiful – and so does the fruit tart! Thanks for hosting and enjoy the rest of your week!

  2. Your Villeroy and Boch Melina is such a happy looking pattern, Susan! It would look lovely on a Spring or Summer table, as well. I like the way it looks with your white wicker. All very pretty and easy, breezy.

That is one way we are very much alike, Susan. When I find something I love, I love it for a long time. Even if styles and trends change, I still love it. ~ So glad you’re completely well now. I knew that ‘ole pneumonia couldn’t keep you down. 🙂

    • Yup, especially when you have that instant love. That’s the way it was with this pattern, I just knew I would love it forever. Thanks! Everyday got better but the really turning point was about a week ago when my full energy returned. Lung power = Oxygen = Energy. Without lung power, there is no energy. Hope you are staying well!

  3. I love your beautiful china. And the egg cups!!! Those brought back memories. When my children were little, I used to make a soft boiled egg for them and then cut the toast into strips to dip into the yolk part. They always loved that and often remind me now about that. I’m not sure what happened to my egg cups, but would love to find new ones.

Whenever we are in England, I always have an egg in a cup. Brings back wonderful memories.

  4. Such pretty dishes and timeless!!! LOVE the egg cups!

  5. If you aren’t already on it, Check out the group Beautiful Table Settings on Facebook.

  6. Your table is so inviting. I have a couple of Villeroy & Boch patterns as well, Ivoire and Ault Luxembourg. Replacements Inc in Greensboro, NC have some pieces of Melina pattern in stock if you need a couple of replacement pieces in stock. They are available online and will ship. I have dealt with them a few times and they are very helpful.

I love almost all of Villeroy and Boch patterns! I have Country Cottage that I use primarily in the spring and summer months. It has blueberries, cherries, and blackberries on it, with a blue rim. I am on their email list so I am always getting info on their sales. Your pattern is very pretty too. Your tables look so inviting. What time is brunch?

  8. Thank you Susan, and I love that V & B pattern, it’s a classic and so nice you are still using it and enjoying. Your fruit tart is so pretty! Glad you’re feeling better!

  9. Pretty table to sit down to for a nice breakfast or brunch! Please slice that tart for me! Also glad to hear you are running on full steam (ahead).

  10. So pretty Susan! I love the vintage fruit glasses.

  11. Beautiful china! I love the fruit pattern, and it’s perfect for this harvest season too. The tart looks yummy! Glad the pneumonia was treated and didn’t keep you down.

  12. That china is lovely and sets such a pretty table! The fruit tart looks wonderful and if there was a Publix nearby I would try one. 🙂 I’m glad you’re over the pneumonia, I had it a couple of years ago and it was NOT fun. Stay safe and well now!

  13. Beautiful. Having an elegant set table makes food taste even better. I like that high domed glass to store your tart. Looks like just the right size.

  14. Gorgeous china Susan! I have a pattern that I think of as my “breakfast” china too – so fun! 🙂 So glad you’re feeling better! Thanks as always for hosting!

  15. Lovely table setting. Villeroy and Boch make lovely patterns that never go out of style. I have the Basket pattern that was discontinued but they have brought it back with just the basic pieces. That fruit tart looks very inviting! Wish I could have a slice with you!Be well!

  16. Your V&B dishes always catches my eye at Macy’s. It is timeless. Glad you are feeling better!

  20. Mary Conlon says

Your table setting is beautiful! I’m with you and agree if I like a pattern I like it for a very long time! The tart looks delicious but I must admit if you live near a Wegman’s try theirs! Unbeatable!

  21. This is such a classic and beautiful pattern of V&B and you’ve set a lovely table too. Love all the pieces you have, it’s quite complete, so it was worth buying it at 12 month payments.
I too have a Noritake beauty that I bought like that, at 12 month payments many years ago. Anyway, I love it and it made me happy.
Thank you for hosting dear friend.
    Keep safe and happy.
    Enjoy your weekend.
    Fabby

  22. Not sure if you get this comment since somehow I missed this particle blog.

I have some pieces of this pattern and also some of V&B basket weave too, which I mix together. But I always wished that I had bought more of Melina.
But money was an issue then too. It is a gorgeous pattern and never out of style. All Villeroy and Boch are treasures and lasting pieces of China.

I can’t wait to buy one of those fruit tarts from Public. Yum!
