A Christmas Tree for the Porch

I’ve been busy this last week decorating for Christmas and preparing for the neighborhood Ladies Cookie Party that will be at my house Sunday afternoon. Even though the weather is a bit chilly for hanging out on the screened-in porch, I thought I’d dress it up a bit since it’s visible from inside. And maybe, just maybe, Sunday will be nice enough to venture out for a bit. Last week was in the 30’s and today the temps reached the 60’s here…Georgia weather is crazy!

Here are a few views of the porch…so far. This tree is in a large urn so I think I’ll just remove the star and leave it out here year round. It would be kind of nice to have some soft lights in that corner on those sweet summer nights on the porch.

Dragonflies love being on the porch, too.

A little candlelight…

What? How did this picture get in here?  If you have seen my porch on RMS, you may remember this little chair that acts as a plant stand on the porch during the summer.

Since it’s too cold for a big ole fat, red geranium, I stuffed this large clay pot with several strands of white lights and threw some sparkly ornaments on top.

This only cost around $4 to do. I already had the clay pot and the lights…and the ornaments came from Dollar Tree. The ornaments were in canisters that each contained five ornaments…for $1…so that’s twenty ornaments for $4. Can’t beat that dollar store.  Ummm, I’m thinking I might need to weave some lit garland around the top of the chair…what do you think?

It’s a party in a pot!

Thanks for stopping by for a peek at Christmas on the porch!

Hi Susan..Yes, we are having crazy weather, aren’t we? A tornado watch in December?? I love your porch! The nice thing about our weather is that there will be days when you can enjoy it in the winter. I love your sparkly party in a pot, too! I’m heading out to the $ store for some cheap Christmasy finds tomorrow!…Debbie

  2. Rita Kent at TesoroFino.Com says

This is simply gorgeous. I just want to come over and sit on the porch with something hot to drink! Lol, Rita

  3. Those dragonflies are great, and you can’t beat the price of that party in a pot. Our screened porch is visible from our living room, and I haven’t done a thing out there. I keep thinking that I should – you have inspired me to do so! Thanks, Sally

  4. Terri and Bob says

I am totally in love with that pot. I love it just the way it is! If you add some greenery, won’t you be tempted to add a bow, too?

    Thanks for the great post!

  7. Susan, You always have the best ideas! I've been eyeing trees in an urn, you may have just tipped the maybe to a go get one! Where did you find the adorable dragonfly lights? They're just too cute! Love the ornaments in the pot idea & yes, I think a little greenery would finish it beautifully! β™₯ Diane

  8. Love those dragonfly lights on the outdoor tree and that clay pot in the chair with the lights and ornaments…ohhh that is just the neatest idea girl!!!! Loved it all…hope you are having a great week!

  9. Lady Katherine says

The tree is pretty lighted on your porch! I love, love, love, the dragonflys! The clay pot is all spruced up! A little garland or strands of ice cycles from Dollar Tree would look great. But I know you, will find something very special! Is that a swing I see for the first time or a hammock?

  10. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

Katherine…yep…that’s a swing…it’s the same one that’s in my header pic…I’ve disguised the chains. πŸ™‚ Diane, the dragonfly lights came from Smith Hawkin online and the tree came from Michaels…on sale from $225 to $99 because it supposedly leans…I didn’t see a lean. πŸ™‚

  11. Wow Susan… I LOVE your porch and you tree is stunning…I think it would look great out there all year… you could even make it an all occasion tree… We use to have on by our front door… When we had a house… LOL LOL Those little dragonflies are adorable… What a cute idea the planter is too… Have a great night

  12. Love your porch all ready for a party. I love the “uplights” in your party in a pot! That porchswing is calling my name. I’d be out there even if I had to take the electric blanket to wrap around me. Hot chocolate would be great wouldn’t it? Let’s all meet out there tonight about midnight?

  13. Suzann @ Lavender and Roses says

Oh so lovely! My girlfriend just said today that she wanted a tree that she could keep up year round and decorate for seasons and holidays. So hearing you say that you were going to keep your tree on your porch made me smile and think of her. Knowing how wonderfully creative you are, I can see how you would decorate it for Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, spring, summer, 4th of July, someone’s birthday or anniversary, etc. Okay, now I want one too. LOL.

  14. Glenda/MidSouth says

Love your porch decorations, and I love the dragon flies. It is all beautiful.

  15. A Hint of Home says

The tree with the dragonfly lights are very elegant. Your porch is very pretty.

  16. profenretraite says

Susan…You are soooo sweet! You know I’d love to meet you! I’ll have to find out if I am needed to babysit. My daughter isn’t very good about giving me much notice. Can I get back to you?…Debbie

  17. Very pretty! Your guests will enjoy this for sure, enjoy the cookie party and I hope weather will be nice to enjoy the porch too. We had a bad storm last night and as of now, we still have no electricity. Thank God for generators or we would be sitting in the dark being bored….Christine

  18. I can only say WOW! Your porch is just magical, Susan!
    Merry Christmas…Kathy

  19. You might consider a garland that has lights incorporated, to go across the back and wind down the sides of your chair.
One thing about the weather in Georgia, if you don’t like it, hang around for a day or so, and it’s bound to change. It’s 63 degrees at 12.30 a.m. right now here in Middle Georgia and Sunday night it is supposed to be 25 degrees. I think that is why so many people have trouble staying well in Winter. The body has a hard time adjusting to such rapidly changing conditions.

  20. Happy To Be says

Susan love your Par-ty in a Pot idea..very cleave as everything you do..hope you have a great Cookie party are you baking them??I di some sugar cookies today and more to do tomorrow..have a great and fun day…hugs and smiles Gloria

  21. I love the ornaments in a pot. The way the light comes up…love it!

  22. Really Rainey says

Susan, your porch looks extremely nap-able! I really love how you wrapped the chains from the swing in fabric… Soooooo sweet!
I admit to being an afternoon napper. My favorite nappie is to cuddle up with my Granddaughter Mady and her soft pink blanket on my big king bed. She is a cuddler!

  23. Hi Susan…

Girlfriend, I just love your “pot party”….ooops I mean “party in a pot”…hehe!!! Sorry darlin’, I just couldn’t resist! Seriously though, I love that idea! You always have the greatest ideas my friend!!!

  45. Kathleen Ellis says

Susan…this is so cozy and pretty! I love the dragonflies! what a clever way to “winter up” your chair! Yes, I think lit garland around the back of the chair and even the base of the pot would be a wonderful addition, but it looks great without it, too!
I hope the weather is nice enough on Sunday for you to enjoy your cookie party on the porch! πŸ™‚

  46. I really love that planter with the lights in the bottom and the bulbs on top. Amazing! I bet I could even do that.

  52. Rhoda @ Southern Hospitality says

Love your porch, Susan! And the balls and lights piled in the clay pot is wonderful.

  53. I had to work today (literally–had to go sign books with local authors at a humongous thing for senior citizens) and I just came home and read your comment about the gray china.

But first–I have to tell you that I enjoyed your porch decorations so much. You have such a magical touch–I just love it all. The idea with the clay pot is fantastic. I’d outline that chair with lights in a heartbeat!

Those gray-blue dishes are 25% off, and it’s a place-setting for 6. I called the store and said, Gollumize it, baby! lol Now to find some placemats. LOL I did look on Ebay, but there aren’t many pieces of this. It’s from the 50s.

  54. OMG! Party in a pot! What a crack up! That is an awesome idea. We’ll probably start seeing them all over the blogisphere! : )

  55. What a charming home! I will certainly add you to my blog list. Happy Holidays!

  56. Susan, I love the dragonflies! Are they lights or did you hang them in front of the lights?
Oh I just love it all! LOL

  57. I predict a run on clay pots, strands of lights and bargain ornaments in every city across the nation!

  58. Hello, hello, hello–and thanks for the ideas. Chargers would be a great way to go for my NEW china. lol. Also, I managed to buy a strawberry pitcher for $5.95 on Ebay–a major score, if Replacements LTD is to be trusted as a guideline. I wanted to ask you to please sign me up for Tablescape Tuesday, as I’m working on something wildly pink.

  59. P.S. Now, listen: you simply MUST buy more plates. A china closet would be heaven, but until then, buy those dishes, girl! Put them in Gollumy places, under the bed, under the sofa, under chairs. LOL You can hang plates and just take them off the wall a la Bunny Williams when you need them. Or just buy pairs! I once saw a darling tablesetting for two (mismatched dishes) in Martha Stewart’s Gardening book.

  60. susan,I love the party in the pot idea,I agree more lights on the top of the chair, the more sparkle the better. You have such a magical touch and how lucky for the ladies to be seated on your beautiful back porch,Have a wonderful,sparkly,cookie-time.Hugs Kathysue
