A Cozy, Woodland Setting

Welcome to the 221st Tablescape Thursday!  (Pssst:  The seasonal footer at the bottom of BNOTP is all decked out with Christmas and Holiday posts.)

As I put this table setting together yesterday, I thought I was creating a Christmas tablescape.  Once I sat down and began writing my post, I realized this is really a great “transition” table, a table that’s as much at home for a fall or Thanksgiving dinner as it would be for a Christmas feast.

Fall Tablescape, Plaid Dinner Plates and Deer Salad Plates

Perfect timing since we are move from one holiday/season and another rapidly approaches.  I love, love, love plaid, so this is one of my fave settings.

You may remember the deer in our centerpiece from a previous hunt-themed Christmas mantel and a Thanksgiving table setting in 2010.

They are having fun romping through the magnolia leaves.  Tucked among the leaves are four shed antlers.  Plaid ribbon is entwined throughout, adding a bit of festive color.

I was so surprised to find the plaid napkins I’ve had for several years worked great with the Carson Plaid dinner plates from Pottery Barn.  They kind of look like they were made for each other.  Nice when that happens!  Napkins were previously used with the plaid plates in this tablescape: Christmas Table Setting: Mad About Plaid

My friend, Bonnie spotted these plaid plates from Pottery Barn and sent a picture my way.  She knows me well!  We both ended up buying a set.  It’s a good thing we live on opposite sides of the U.S.  We would be dangerous together.

I’ve used the antler flatware many times in previous table settings but this is the first time I’ve paired it with black flatware.  The antler flatware only came as a fork/knife set so it’s fun and sometimes challenging to decide what flatware to use along side it.  The black worked well with the napkins and plaid plates.

I started out with pine-cone napkin rings but changed them out for rustic acorns, instead.  We have kind of a acorn, deer antler theme going on in this table setting.

A couple of weeks ago I shared a super inexpensive way to make place cards.  I couldn’t resist making some for this table setting, too.

Antler Placecard Holder

Real acorns adorn each place card and work well with the acorn tureens and acorn napkin rings.  The place card holders are antler ornaments found last year in Walmart (I think it was Walmart.)  They were previously used in this Thanksgiving tablescape.  The acorn napkin rings were ornaments, too.  I love shopping the ornament section of stores because you can find some really cute “napkin rings” and “place card holders” there for very reasonable prices.

Looking forward to the tablescapes posted for this Tablescape Thursday!

  1. those plaids really work! i used acorns and pinecones…i’m glad to know i don’t have to retire those in the fall!

  2. Gorgeous, Susan! I like the plaid too and the reindeer. I have them too and that reminds me, I need to take them out again….Christine

  3. Beautiful, Susan. I wouldn’t have thought to use my brown acorn bowls for a Christmas setting, I just put them away!
I love plaid, I am on the look out for plaid dinner plates. I know WS?PB has them, but not at the outlet yet! You know I would never pay full price! 🙂
Thanks for hosting and sharing your beautiful woodsy table. Glad those antlers aren’t real! I am not into body parts on the table, LOL!

    • Kathleen, You’re so lucky you have a great outlet for WS and PB. The nearest one to me is about 1 1/2 hours away so I’d waste any savings on gas money. Plus, they never have the things I really love from the stores in the outlet…just the stuff that didn’t sell. The antlers are real…they are shed antlers, found on eBay.

  4. Just wonderful, Susan! I’m still moving slowly toward Christmas — and it IS still November! This is a lovely table, with such wonderful fall touches. I really adore the plaid, and those little antler ornaments are darling!

  5. Susan, this is such a lovely party to come to. I love when I have something to share here.
    Have a great weekend.
    Laurie

  6. I love your tablescapes…the hunting theme and plaid dishes and linens are traditional and comforting.

  7. I absolutely love this tablescape!!! I am also mad for plaid and you did this one just right!!! Love all the details, elegant yet not overdone…..

  8. What a gorgeous “transitional” table! It looks very inviting on this rainy November day… a cup of soup and some crusty bread at your mountain retreat! Love the deer in the centerpiece. The plaids match so well! And those little “deer in the snowy woods” plates are beautiful. The flatware makes an interesting mix, and the acorn items tie it all together.

  9. The antler ornaments at each place setting are so cute! Love the magnolia leaves with the browns and plaids, so festive and warm! Looks great with your walls too! Sometimes I wish I could blink my eyes to change wall color to match what I’m doing! Merry Tablescaping!

  10. Beautiful! Love those plates!

  11. I have the plaid plates, too, and have found that they work well with a lot of things I already have. You will too!

You put everything together so beautifully, especially the centerpiece. Thanks for hosting.

  12. Tombstone Livestock says

Great table again Susan, but where are the overhead zip line photos, hope you had a great Thanksgiving and are ramping up to a very Merry Christmas.

  13. Susan, just a beautiful table I love the acorns and the dishes. Very pretty and festive.

  15. Stunning. Decorating w/reindeer and plaid are among my favorite ways to decorate — so I LOVED your dining room table! I decorated the mantle in my dining room with an abundance of pines, pinecones and pheasant feathers…and used plaid placemats and napkins. Everything you touch, Susan, is magic.

  16. Thank you Susan for hosting. If I saw those plates I would be buying too!!!!!! I started collecting red transfer ware as my Christmas plates last year, like I need more plates, but I thought they would be perfect for Christmas and all year long. Your table is a beauty!! Deer are so popular and I plan to get my set out today from the Christmas shed. I found them at a yard sale and just truly love them! Have a wonderful weekend. xo

    • Oooh, be still my heart. Love red transferware! That would be beautiful for Christmas…Valentines Day…really all year long! Lynn, it was so late when I finished the table and the post, I forgot to list where things came from at the end of the post. I need to add that. Unless they have sold out, the plates are available at Pottery Barn online.

  17. Gees, I just LUV this!!! I have the deer, too, and did plaid last year…but I’m REALLY into the antler look…NICE JOB! franki

  18. Oh, Susan,
such a beautiful (Scottish) tablescape! 🙂
I can just picture you doing the “Carlton Banks” dance (LOL) when you realized how great those plaid napkins do work with those beautiful plates! 😉
Love, love, love all of them! Actually, I love anything Tartan, plus they really look like they were made for each other! Oh, and, of course, those deer plates are gorgeous and those acorn tureens are really, really cute! Long story short… I love, love, love everything I see on your table! 🙂
    (As always… lol)
    ~Hugs to you~

  19. Susan, this table makes me smile with its woodland theme and tartan touches. I set up a transitional table last night that I will share next week. I don’t like to rush into the Christmas season, but rather savor the autumn days we have left. Thanks for sharing this lovely tablescape. I adore all the natural elements!

  20. I love your cozy plaids! Perfect for cold weather. Thanks so much for hosting, Susan!

  21. Hi Susan,
I love plaid!!! And use it all over my house. I wrap all my gifts in plaid paper with black velvet ribbon. I saw this done at Ralph Lauren store in Chicago. Stunning!
Love your napkins with the plaid dinnerware and salad plates. Just a beautiful table. Enjoying your blog so much!

    • Marlene, that sounds sooo beautiful! I love that RL look…how smart you were to make it your own! I can’t decide how I want to wrap my presents this year, but I’m toying with one idea. 🙂

  22. LOVE this, Susan!! I have to get busy and put away all the pumpkins, turkeys and fall things and drag out a few Christmas things now that we’re home. I’m inspired by your plaid deer in the snow setting! x♥x
    B.

  23. Beautiful, as always, Susan. I’ve always loved those deer, and they look gorgeous with the magnolia leaves. My tablescape today is also plaids, but much more casual than your beautiful scape. Thanks for hosting. laurie

  24. Hi Susann,
this table with the Tartan theme is lovely. Especially the acorn dishes are cute. Thanks for sharing and for hosting this wonderful event.
    Best greetings, Johanna

  25. Hi Susan-
Boy I love your tablescape! I want to pick it up and set it in my house! I’ve had a bun on for the woodland/cabin kid of look this year. I tried to squeeze it in to the home and I got those same dishes with the deer! I love the plaid dishes with them too. Your plaid napkins were a lucky go together look!
    Got any snow yet? LOL…

  26. Very pretty! I love plaid on a Christmas-oriented table! It just takes me back…makes me think of the movie “Little Women” for some reason! 🙂

  27. Susan, I LOVE it!! The deer plates are beautiful and I want them!! Where, oh where, did you find them?
Thank you so much for such a beautiful blog and your ever helpful posts from everything from tablescapes to painting. You’re the best!! Have a blessed day!

  28. Susan, LoVe your classic tablescape!
Thank you for hosting all the beauty and inspiration from all over the world,
it is always a pleasure to peruse.
    Blessings, Paulette

  29. As always, your table is beautiful. I’ve just finished creating a home page app on my iPhone for BNOTP – now I’m able to visit on the go. Have a wonderfule weekend – I’ll link the “how to” for the app on Monday, along with a mini Morph.

  30. This is so beautiful! Love the plaid, love the reindeer, love the antlers . . . just love!

  31. Oh Susan! Now, you’ve got me wondering what I did with all the red and green plaid tablecloths, that fit different size tables. Tomorrow, maybe I’ll find them! Love your dining room tablescape! Love the pop of unexpected complimenting 2 holidays with one.

    Merry Christmas,
    Helen

  32. Saw those reindeer plates and ooh am still fighting the urge to get them. Seeing them on your table just makes me want them even more! I love the acorn dishes and the plaid napkins too.. Great table Susan. Thanks for all the inspiration you give us and for hosting this most joyous Thursday event! xo marlis

  33. I can definitely see that table transition from Thanksgiving to Christmas…so beautiful…I so love the woodland themed tablescapes…and those place card settings are fantastic….You always set such a gorgeous table Susan…so many wonderful things to see and admire..Have a wonderful weekend!

  34. It is indeed a transition table quietly leaving fall behind and moving into a new season. You amaze me with all the accessories you have to work with and how each week you come up with new looks, new ideas.

  35. Just beautiful, Susan. I like the reindeer plates and the plaids.

  36. Absolutely beautiful. I covet those deer, and your dishes are wonderful, especially the deer plates. Just lovely, every single detail is perfect.

  37. Oh gosh, I had to double take—I swear we had the same thoughts–plaid, same plates, natural items! I haven’t photographed yet but will soon. LOVE your deer too. Sigh, just lovely.

  38. As usual Susan, exquisite! Love the mix of everything. Question: Is the greenery used Magnolia leaves? Also am admiring your reindeers as I began collecting them a few years ago, however am discovering it is getting more difficult to find ones that appear hand crafted rather than coming off an assembly line. -Brenda-

    • Thanks, Brenda! Yep, those are magnolia leaves from the huge magnolia in my front yard. It’s taking over the driveway and needs trimming so I have a feeling I’ll be using a lot of magnolia this year in my decorating. I found the reindeer in Lowes around 3 years ago. Recently I saw some really cute ones in Hobby Lobby and though I don’t think they were hand crafted, they almost looked that way. They had some pretty carving on them. Not sure if you have an HL in your area. It is hard to find them sometime.

      • …and thank you, Susan. You are so fortunate to have fresh Magnolia leaves at your disposal. They are sooooo pretty! Where I live, I have to settle for evergreen boughs which can be a bit messy to work with. ºÜº Also, there is no Hobby Lobby in Canada to my knowledge. Often shop in the State of New York, Michigan or New Hampshire however don’t believe there are any there as well. From all reports though, they are a fantastic store. Wish we had one! -Brenda-

  39. Oh, gosh, Susan…your table is just FULL of great ideas as well as being wonderful to see at first glance. Thanks for sharing all of your tips for us. I have those deer in my attic and have not gotten them out for a couple of years…after your inspiration, they may see the light of day soon.

  40. Mary from Virginia says

love love the plaid! Good thing I don’t live close to you. I would be at your table all the time or at least borrowing all of your NEAT dishes-especially those cute acorn bowls!

  41. Hi,

I discovered your blog some time ago and have really enjoyed it. Since our son moved to Athens this past summer I have been enjoying your writings and photography even more! It’s like a little piece of Georgia comes into the house everyday.

  42. Your table setting is beautiful & I LOVE the plaid, too. I’ve put that on my list for fabric the next time I visit Hancock’s. Your dishes reminded me of a Christmas pillow from Pottery Barn! Do you remember where you got them? Thanks so much for sharing.

  43. Hi my friend! I heart your deer. The deer have taken over my house this year. Pheasants for Thanksgiving and Deer for Christmas. My house has gone wild! haha I soooo want those deer ornaments. I just love your table. Who can resist the plaid? xxoo

  44. Hi Susan,
Loved your Christmas table with those neat deer. Really like them, and also love magnolia leaves, they are just so pretty, and you are right those napkins do look like they were made for those plates. Lovely table
as always……………how do you do it!!!

    Thanks for hosting as always.
    Blessings, Nellie

  45. What a pretty tablescape, Susan–I love the snowy scene in the beautiful deer plates in particular.

  46. Hi there, haven’t visited your blog in a while. I miss your beautiful Tablescapes. This one is gorgeous. Love the chandelier so much.

    Rebecca♥

  47. Pam ~ Crumpety Cottage says

Love this table scape!! I too am a plaid girl. I usually don’t like stripes, though there are exceptions, but I LOVE plaid. There is just something so homey and cozy about plaid. I think it brings me back to my youth and all those plaid skirts with knee socks in the fall. *sigh* And I love the reindeer (I’m going to call them reindeer, lol) They are so pretty and elegant. The little acorn tureens are too cute! I’ve never seen tiny tureens like that. I love them. And those beautiful deer and tree salad plates on top of the plaid dinner plate … with the plaid napkins!! Too pretty! Yikes that’s a good one. And say, how much do you want for that mirror? I want to buy it from you!!

    • Pam, I have a good news! Those mirrors used to hard to find but now if you google “Venetian Glass Mirrors” there are bunches for sale at pretty reasonable prices. I’ve had that one for about 15 years. It’s not antique but I do love it. The tureens came from William Sonoma…they usually have some type of tureen each fall so keep your eye out.

  48. pam ~ Crumpety Cottage says

Awesome! I’ll look for the mirrors and try to wait patiently til fall, lol. The idea of individual tureens like that is just too cute! Thanks, Susan.

  49. May I ask the brand and pattern of the deer accent plates? I have the plaid dinner plates and WANT those deer plates!

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
