In The BNOTP Library: Colefax and Fowler: The Best in English Interior Decoration

If you’re a lover of English Country design, this book is about the firm that pretty much invented this style of decorating. They greatly influenced some of our favorite designers including Arthur Hadley, Mario Buatta and Mark Hampton.

Colefax and Fowler by Chester Jones

3 Things I Like About This Book:

  • The design firm of Colefax & Fowler was established in the 1930’s and amazingly it still exists today under the name Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler. That says so much about the impact and influence of this firm through the years. This book goes into the history of how the firm began giving lots of beautiful examples of their work over the years.
  • Book is divided in three parts: Part I: The Origins of Colefax & Fowler; Part II: Hallmarks of Colefax & Fowler Style and Part III: Colefax & Fowler Today. It’s impossible to overstate the influence of this firm on the style we all know and love as English Country. The inside flap describes their design style beautifully this way: “Chintz in glorious faded colors, fringed and tasselled curtains, sofas design for years of fireside comfort and expertly applied paint finishes, subtly lit to show off beautiful antiques and paintings: These are the hallmarks of English Country style, developed fifty years ago by the preeminent English design firm of Colefax & Fowler.”
  • This isn’t a “how-to” decorating book but a celebration of all that Colefax & Fowler accomplished and the impact they left on the world of design that lives on in full force today.
