Create An Autumn Porch That Will Invite Guests To Linger

Welcome to the 397th Metamorphosis Monday!

Even though it’s still nice and warm here in Georgia, the mornings are feeling wonderfully cool. I come downstairs each morning and throw open the doors to the screened porch and let the cool morning air fill the house. Some days are so nice now, I can leave the doors open all day.

Doors open to Porch

This weekend I went ahead and hung my favorite fall wreath though I know we still have another month or two of warm weather ahead. I couldn’t resist adding a bit of color to the porch.

Since adding benches to the porch, I’m surprised how much I enjoy sitting out here.

Fall Porch Decorating Ideas

Of course, when the mosquitoes find me, it’s time to head to the back porch which is thankfully screened in.

Build a Screened Porch

My favorite memory of the front porch this summer was discovering how much I enjoy sitting here listening to the soft sounds of the lawn sprinkler watering the newly planted shrubs. I had forgotten how nice a good old-fashioned sprinkler can sound as it gently sways to and fro. It was absolutely mesmerizing and the benches on the porch became my new favorite spot to sit and open the mail each day.

Decorate with Tartan for a Fall Porch

Since summer is slowly fading away, I thought I would create a little welcoming spot for guests. I’m not expecting guests today, but hope this gives you a few ideas for sprucing up your porch for fall.

Bench for a Front Porch in Autumn

I use this wreath almost every single fall. I’ve had it for years and have never found another one that I like better for my autumn front door.

Bats seem to like it too, come Halloween! 😉 (Tutorial for creating this batty door can be found here: Eye of Newt and Toe of Frog)

No bats today, thankfully! lol

Decorate Porch for Fall

Just muffins, hot chocolate and a good book for weary souls who could use a little rest and cozy comfort on a chilly fall day.

Autumn Comes to the Porch

Are you seeing any signs of fall yet in your area? The trees are all still green here, but the cool mornings are the biggest hint that fall is headed our way.

  1. We won’t actually see leaves changing here in NC until October, but there are definitely signs of fall all around and we are finally getting some cooler temps:)

  2. Your porch is gorgeous, and I love your benches! Thanks for hosting the party, and I hope that you have a wonderful day!!!

  3. You are so lucky to have such a lovely front porch, Susan and it is super inviting! I have a tiny stoop. Boo. 😉

    • Thanks so much, Kim! I totally understand, that’s what I had at my last house and also on this house for several years. I’ve lived here 25 years and only added the porch 8 years ago. I have really enjoyed it and wish I had added it on a long time ago.

  4. Your porch looks so inviting Susan, love the picnic set up! I’m not quite ready for the blanket though, I’ve got my bathing suit on today! Thanks for the party, Happy Labor Day!

  5. Your front porch looks so inviting…..Maybe it will hurry in welcoming fall our way. We are in eastern NC and I have always been a summer girl…right now I am wishing for fall in the worst way !! Have a great Labor Day and week.

    Leigh

    • Thanks, Leigh! I have such mixed emotions, hate to see summer ending but I know fall will be beautiful. Now winter, that I could do without. lol

  6. Susan I have always loved your porch and the bats are fab!

  7. We have had a couple of cool mornings…it’s amazing how much more energetic it makes you feel. I can’t wait!

  8. Thanks so much for hosting!!

    Hugs,
    Deb

  9. omg that bat porch is killing me….LUV IT! xoxoxo

    • lol I know I should do something entirely different this year, but I think I may do the bat porch again this year. I just love it and the Trick or Treaters really love it, too!

  10. Your porch looks so inviting. Love the fall wreath on your door.
The throw on your bench is adorable!

  11. Those benches look so inviting, dressed for a fall day, and it’s good to hear that you actually use them. Love that red throw. I see a limelight in the background–will there be a follow-up status report?

    • That was such a surprise, to find myself actually using them! I figured they would pretty much just be for decoration but it’s actually fun to sit out there and read, until the mosquitoes find me!

I should have done a follow up on those. The one on the other side of the porch that I’ve had two years now was gorgeous! They are the perfect size to go between windows because they don’t cover them and you just see the flowers peaking into view through the windows. I’ll take some pics of them tomorrow to share. I need to do some more planting this fall, fall is the perfect time for that.
Thanks for asking about those, Mia…will post about them soon.

  12. Lord, I wish Fall would get to Arkansas. We’re still hotter than blue blazes here. Your porch is lovely!

    • I can’t believe how much it’s cooled off here. After having such a hot summer, it does feel good. I’m sure hot days will return though before fall really gets here. Hope you see some cooler days soon, Tammy!

  13. Living in Hawai’i you wouldn’t think we experience changes in seasons, but …yes, we do…albeit subtle, after living here for a while you do start noticing them. We’re already experiencing cooler early mornings (even though the thermometer might climb to the mid and upper 80s later on) and there is a special quality to the sunlight…

    • I didn’t know that, Sonia…I’m so glad you told me about that! I didn’t realize you guys saw a difference throughout the year. What are the highs during the wintertime?
The weather you’re having right now is very similar to what we’re having, although today was a little cooler. I never had to close the doors to the screened porch today, never got hotter than 79 on the porch.

  14. Your front porch is wonderful. And oh, how I can relate to the bugs biting. We just returned home and not once was I bitten during travels, only upon return. Have a great week.

  15. Pam Matheson says

Hey Susan: I’ve enjoyed BNOTP so much since being told about it by a mutual friend. Much of our old group is still at Peachtree–wish you’d come see us.
    Pam Matheson

    • Hi Pam! So good to hear from you! I miss you guys! If you were about 20 minutes closer, I would love it! ATL is so far for me, especially in this awful traffic on I-75. Maybe it will be better once they finish that huge extension they’ve been working on the last few years.
Maybe I need to have another Halloween party and invite everyone so we can catch up! 😉 Say hello to everyone for me!

  16. Oh yes! Here in Minnesota,we are noticing changes. Daylight hours are already feeling shorter. Squirels are starting to bury acorns for later. Birds are starting to flock up for migration. Leaves are barely starting to change color. Mornings are cooler! So ready for fall! My favorite season! Winter is my next favorite! Love a snowy day! Love your porch!

    • Yeah, that part I don’t like…it’s getting darker here sooner, too. I was trying to remember when the time changes occurs…is that in October. Dreading that. Oh well, fall and winter are for snuggling, hot fires and lots of reading and puzzle-doing. lol At least for this girl who think she’s freezing when it’s in the 60’s outside! 😉
Laurie, I’ve never been to Minnesota, I should see your great state one day!

  17. I feel Fall in the morning also. Sometimes it get really hot in the afternoon, but cools off quickly about 5 p.m. I love having all the doors and windows open and smelling the fresh air.

Your front porch looks amazing and the muffins too.

    Have a great week Susan.

    Mary

  18. What a find those two benches!! I’ve got the “swing” version and swing (gently) every morning!! It is so quiet and usually I see an eagle…today TWO PAIRS!! HAPPY LABOR DAY!! frani

    • The swing is so pretty! I love it! I’m so jealous, Franki! The only time I’ve seen eagles in the wild was on a birding trip to Jekyll Island during fall migration back in 2009. They were very far away, high up in a nest, but I was still thrilled to see our national bird! 🙂

  19. Oh Susan, your “new” porch is so beautiful and I’m glad you are using your great benches. Maybe you can wrap up in a nice warm blanket and fill that thermos with some hot chocolate when it gets colder and still enjoy your porch.

  20. LOVE the fall decor you’ve put on your porch! Looks so inviting and cozy! That throw blanket is fantastic and the set-up with the thermos and muffins speaks of glorious fall days. Thanks for hosting!

  21. I love your beautiful porch and would so much like to be sitting right there with you drinking some coffee and eating one of your delicious looking muffins. Of course we would also go shopping a little later in the afternoon. 🙂

  22. Last night we sat on the deck and got so chilly we had to come in and heat up some Trader Joes spiced cider. Today, I have the AC back on and it will be hot all week. Had over 10″ of rain in one week and then Saturday morning had an earth tremor. Used to be we had drouth and tornado’s. Hope you had a wonderful holiday and as usual, you post was beautiful.

    • Carol that sounds just like our crazy GA weather, you can experience all the seasons in the space of a week around here. lol
WOW! You had a tremor? Man, those freak me out. I’ve only experienced two earthquakes here in GA and both were very small, but still very scary! I hope you don’t have anymore. We’ve been very lucky regarding tornadoes, I haven’t had to go to the basement for a tornado in the last couple of years. Hope it stays that way!

  23. Your porch is beautiful, cozy, and inviting! …Thanks for hosting Met Monday!

  24. nancy c harris says

    Susan
Your wreath is beautiful and matches the front door perfectly.

Would you mind sharing the color name of your red door?

    Thank you.

    • Sure, it’s Benjamin Moore “Heritage Red.” They only make it in their Aura line, so it’s a bit pricey, but totally worth it for doing something small like a door. It’s absolutely my favorite red for doors! Not all Benjamin Moore stores carry the Aura line, so it’s a good idea to call around and see which BM store in your area has it before driving there.

  25. Susan, your porch is autumn perfect! Thanks so much for hosting! Pam @ Everyday Living

  26. Your porch is beautiful and I love the addition of the benches! Where did you find the great Tartan Bag? I love it!

  27. Love all of the inspiration! Thanks for hosting.

  28. Love your beautiful porch when you have it dressed for fall.

  29. What color is the front door, I love it?

  30. Love fall decor and you have some beauties!

  31. Sarah Smith says

So enjoy every aspect of your blog – love and identify with everything. Look forward to every post. Today’s question: Is there a source for tartan bag with leather trim?

    • Thanks so much, Sarah! We’re you thinking about a bag like the one that I have on the porch with the thermos bottles, or were you thinking of a tartan handbag for winter?

  32. the one on the porch with thermos

    • Oh, gotcha! I found that one on eBay a few years back. I don’t believe the brown part is leather.
It’s a vintage King Seeley Picnic set. I just did a search on eBay and there are several on there…you can see them all here: Plaid Thermos Sets
This one says it’s unused, which is pretty amazing considering how old these are: New Set

  33. renate peterson says

Just lovely as always, love that purse…not ready for autumn yet…gee today is so hot here in Indiana, think I will go into my pool and enjoy the last hot summer days.

  34. So pretty as always…this Indiana heat has to pass before I can get into the Autumn mood. Love that plait purse.

  35. Wow… your gorgeous entryway looks almost exactly like one I drew in pen and ink ( https://pamdepoyanblog.wordpress.com/category/beautiful-doorways-charming-gates/ ) Beautiful! Thanks for sharing…

    • Thanks, Pam! I like the one in your drawing even better! Gorgeous fan light and sidelights! Looks like some of the beautiful porches I see when on historic home tours.
