Welcome to the 326th Metamorphosis Monday!
Hope you had a wonderful weekend! I’m sharing an edible “Before and After” for this Met Monday. I love to eat but don’t necessarily enjoy cooking unless it’s for a party or a gathering of friends or family, then I do look forward to cooking. But if it’s just me, I’m more prone to grab a handful of nuts or eat a piece of salmon and call it a meal.
Recently I’ve started buying those funny looking green juices you find in the refrigerator section at Whole Foods, since I know I don’t eat enough vegetables. I like the way they taste but they are super expensive. Plus, they always look so watery.
This sent me down the path one evening of looking at juicers online at Amazon. In the process I learned there are different kinds of juicers and the most popular seem to be the centrifugal and masticating styles.
Masticating seems to be the most efficient at getting all the good stuff out of vegetables, but I was surprised after watching a YouTube video by how much of the vegetable and fruit was left over after the juicing. Also, it took several minutes to make a glass of juice from a huge pile of vegetables. I know myself well and if it’s not fast, I’m not going to do it.
I finally decided to buy a centrifugal style juicer since those seem to work the fastest, although they aren’t quite as efficient at removing all the juice from the vegetable. I ordered a centrifugal juicer but after 5 days, it still hadn’t even shipped. Irritated by how long it was taking to ship, I canceled the order and decided to see what I could find locally.
One day I was in Target and ran across this, a NutriBullet. It was about 1/3 the cost of the masticating and centrifugal juicers I had seen on Amazon and I really liked how you got the benefit of eating the whole plant and not just the juice from the plant. That had really bothered me when shopping for juicers, how much of the vegetables and fruits was left over and thrown out after juicing with the masticating and centrifugal juicers. So I purchased a Nutribullet and decided to give it a try. When I drink juices, I always go for the ones that are almost all vegetable based. Diabetes runs in my family, both my father and brother had it. Plus, I’ve noticed in the past if I drink a fruit smoothie, it wipes me out. I guess my blood sugar plummets or something because I feel absolutely horrible and always have to lay down and sleep for a couple of hours after drinking one. I feel my best when I stay away from a lot of sugar, natural or processed.
I purchased a juicing book online, but unfortunately when it arrived, it was all fruit drinks. So, I decided to make up my own. These are the vegetables that went into my drink, all organic except for the cucumber which I ended up peeling. I also added in a big handful of kale but forgot to get it out before taking the photo below. It’s visible in the next picture.
The photo below shows everything ready to go into the juicer, including the kale. The only thing I did to prepare the food for the Nutribullet was rinse off the celery and romaine, core the apple and peel the cucumber. That took about 1-2 minutes…my kind of prep time!
Since this was the first time I’ve ever juiced vegetables and the first time using a Nutribullet, I wasn’t sure how much I’d need to make a full glass of juice. I ended up using around 1/2 to 2/3rds of what you see below. There’s a printable recipe at the end of this post sharing what I ended up using in the end. I was surprised to find it made two good-sized glasses of juice, so if you’re making this juice drink for just yourself, you could probably cut this recipe in half.
The ingredients for this juice are:
Handful of kale
2 Romaine leaves
1/2 cucumber
1/2 bunch of parsley
2 stalks of celery
1/2 to 3/4 cup of seedless green grapes (not cut up)
1/2 Granny Smith Apple
I didn’t take any pictures of the juicer loaded up but basically I tossed everything inside in no particular order and turned it on. Here’s how my drink looked in the end.
I had started by adding in just 1/2 cup of grapes (not cut up) but after tasting it once everything was mixed, I added in a few more grapes. I loved the texture/thickness of the drink. It wasn’t too thick to drink but definitely thicker than those watery looking vegetable drinks I’ve been buying at Whole Foods. It also tasted a lot better! If you like your vegetable juice less thick, you can add a small amount of water or apple juice.
Update on 4-28: I mixed up a new recipe today adding in ginger, fennel and lemon juice. Love trying new ingredients. One thing I noticed is things like apples and celery take up a lot of space when you first add them unless you cut them up into smaller pieces. It’s really important (per the reviews I read on Amazon) to not overfill the Nutribullet container. You only want to fill it to the “Max” fill line on the side of the container. So, if you’re adding in your fruits and veggies in big pieces, once things blend down, you can open it back up and add in more. Or, just chop up apples, celery and bulky foods into small pieces first, then you can fit more in at the start.
Clean up was so easy, I literally just rinsed out the Nutribullet container with hot water. That was it!
The recipe made two full glasses, the size shown below. As mentioned, the recipe can be cut in half if you’re just wishing to make one glass of juice. I loved knowing there was no waste and I’m getting everything from the vegetables. The only thing that didn’t go into the drink was the skin of the cucumber.
I noticed today that NutriBullet is available on Amazon for a lot less than what I paid at Target. I paid $129 at Target and it’s only $94.99 with free shipping on Amazon here: Magic Bullet NutriBullet 12-Piece High-Speed Blender/Mixer System.
Update: This morning I took my left over glass of juice that I had refrigerated and squished into it about 1/3 of a ripe banana. It was sooo good! I love the flavor of the banana with these ingredients. So, if this juice isn’t quite sweet enough, add in about 1/3 to 1/2 of a ripe banana.
Do you do any juicing? If so, share your favorite ingredients in the comments. I think I may try adding some nuts next time for the protein, maybe even some flax-seed which is supposed to be really good for you, too. This will make a great breakfast when I’m in a rush, especially with a few nuts thrown in for protein. It will definitely improve the lack of vegetables in my diet because if I’ve got to cook, I’m probably not going to get them into my diet. This was so easy, great for lazy cooks like me!
Would love to hear what you enjoy adding to your juice drinks!
Healthy Green Juice
Ingredients
- Large handful of kale
- 1/2 bunch of parsley
- 1/2 cucumber
- 2 celery stalks
- 1/2 Granny Smith apple
- 1/2 to 3/4 cup of seedless green grapes not cut up
Instructions
- Toss all ingredients into a food blender/extractor. (I used a Nutri-Bullet.)
- Run until completely blended, in a Nutri-bullet it took around 20-30 seconds.
- Taste your juice and if it's not quite sweet enough, add more grapes or 1/2 a banana.
- Serve over ice.
- Makes 2 drinks the size shown in the photo.
Notes
The morning after I made this, I squished about 1/3rd of a ripe banana into the glass of juice I had left over from the night before. (I had refrigerated the other glass of juice overnight.) It was really good with the banana! Loved the flavor of the banana with the other vegetables and it added just a bit more sweetness to the mix.
Looking forward to all the fabulous Before and Afters for this Met Monday!

Please observe these few rules:
Only link up Before and After posts that are home, gardening, crafting, painting, sewing, cooking, DIY related.
Do not link up if you’re doing so to promote a website or product.
Do not link up a post that was just linked last week since a lot of readers will have already seen that post.
Now that’s my kind of cooking! Thanks for the party, Susan!
I make something similar for breakfast every morning and add protein powder and also a greens powder, flaxseed, and fat free plain yogurt. The added protein keeps me full until lunch. Sometimes I even put the ingredients (all but the protein and greens powder) in plastic bags and freeze them. Then I just throw in my vitamix blender in the morning and I’m ready to go!
Sandy, I was wondering about adding in protein powder, had read about those. I don’t know much about them, though. I’m amazed how filling this is but I’m sure the protein powder would make it even more so! Thanks for the freezing idea. I know the “purist” out there probably don’t like freezing ahead of time but I care more about convenience, otherwise I won’t do it at all. I may just make some up in advance for the times I’m rushed.
I have tried many protein powders and found the best tasting is from a company called Unjury. I believe it is Unjury.com and they have great flavors plus unflavored.
Thanks for that info, Nancy. I was looking at the protein powders in Target yesterday when I was there on an errand, and couldn’t decide on any of them. I just finished listening to an awesome book on Audible by Dr. Perlmutter called Brain Maker: The Power of Gut Microbes to Heal and Protect Your Brain For LIfe. He had very good things to say about whey protein…so I’ll order some Unjury. Thanks for that recommendation!
I got the freezing idea from a website called Organize yourself skinny. Fabulous resource! Both a website and a facebook site.
Hi Susan, yes, I do juice fruits and veggies and I love it. Flax seeds add a nice little texture, in my opinion, as well as all the health benefits.
I got some juicing recipes from a N.P. (Natureopathic physician) and they are all delicious. He uses granny smith apples to sweeten his recipes, so you may not like them or you may want to adjust them to have less sugar.
My very favorite is this one:
1 medium beet
4 granny smith apples
1 whole lime (skin removed)
small chunk of ginger root (optional)
blend it all up and it’s incredible. The lime really sets it off. Very simple and easy to make, yet delicious.
Another one I really like
6 large kale leaves
4 granny smith apples
1/2 – 1 whole cucumber (to taste)
4-5 stalks of celery
1 whole lemon (skin removed
Again, delicious and refreshing. You can almost feel the nutrition making it’s way into your cells. Glad you discovered the benefits of juicing! 🙂
Thanks for the recipes, Pam. That’s what I used in this recipe…a granny smith apple, so I bet I would like this!
That green juice looks delicious! I think I need to find one of those juicers at Target and give it a try! Thanks for hosting!
🙂 Linda
Linda, I noticed they are cheaper on Amazon. I probably should have purchased mine on there but I wanted it right then. Impatient!
Thanks so much for hosting! And I’m thinking that green juice would look fabulous in a mason jar! 🙂
I bought the Ninja. I just use it to make smoothies for the gkids when the summer fruits are plentiful. Really for me, just another piece of rarely used equipment. Thanks for hosting, Susan.
I can see where these would be good ‘meals’ when there’s only 1 or 2 people in the household, and the schedules or desire to cook are off from one another, but I kinda like real food, lol. I have tried a fruit-based one, and drank it as 2nd breakfast, on my way to the antique mall when I knew I’d be home later than lunch (recipe included flaxseed, almond milk & butter – taken from another blogger, and it was good). Thanks for the info – it’s always good to hear from actual users. Thanks for hosting us too.
I think I’ll really love it for breakfast. It was so nice having my breakfast ready for me and waiting in the refrigerator this morning. I think with the addition a few nuts and some flax seed, it will be a really healthy way to start my day each morning.
I have never juiced and have never had a juice drink like this. They always look unappetizing to me:) Drinking something gREEN just doesn’t look good but I really should try it. I am pretty sure my girlfriend has a nutribullet too so I will ask her to make us some juices and try one! BTW, I added my links but don’t see them. Will come back and check in a few mins. Thanks again for the party!!!
lol You know the very first time I saw a green juice drink Pinky was when I watched the movie, The Thomas Crown Affair. I LOVE that movie! I think I fell in love with Pierce Brosnan in that movie. 😉 Anyway, the leading lady/actress, Rene Russo, who is playing an investigator, comes in to work one morning (after partying hard the night before) carrying some disgusting looking green drink. I think one of her co-workers asked what it is in disgust. lol Anyway, after I saw that, I’ve been wanting to try one of those…figured it had to be good for you. That movie was made ions before juicing was so popular so it was way ahead of its time with the green juice drink.
I have ot get on the band wagon with this – I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never owned a juicer !
Thanks for the party Susan – hope you have a great week 🙂
xox
Me, neither so don’t feel bad, Suzan. I’m always reluctant to try a new gadget, afraid I’ll buy it and not use it. But when I realized I’m spending a fortune on the watery green drinks from Whole Foods, I decided it was worth a try. I love it so far! I think my body is really appreciating finally getting some healthy veggies.
Susan ~ I have thought about looking into one. The problem is I like to chew too much! Really though it is something to consider, thanks for all the info!
Jan, I do too. I’ll probably just be doing this for breakfast or a late evening snack. I’m not morning person and usually skip breakfast, so this will help in that area.
I crash after some breakfast foods like oatmeal. I sometimes have it as a bedtime snack. I sleep like the dead.
I have been wanting to try Chris’ smoothie that she makes with quinoa, since quinoa is protein. http://thecafesucrefarine.com/2015/04/fresh-pineapple-and-kiwi-protein-smoothie/
I am going to give yours a try also.
That’s what happens to me, too Madonna…oatmeal does that to me, too. I’d forgotten about quinoa…that would be great to add in!
Unfortunately that recipe has too much fruit for me, plus I get a rash when I eat mangos or kiwi. 🙁
what a coincidence , I have the Nutri on my Amazon wish list for Mother’s Day. With 3 kids, surely one of them will surprize me!!
Juicing has always been on my “try one day” list! Thanks for hosting!…hugs…Debbie
Hi Susan, I haven’t tried any of the juicers yet. I confess that I have a hard time with green juices. 🙂 It’s all in my head, I’m sure, so I probably should just buy one from Whole Foods and drink it so I’ll know for sure whether I like it or not. It looks like you made the best choice with your style of juicer; I think we have to choose what best suits our particular needs and lifestyle. Your juice looks like it’s loaded with healthy fruits and veggies.
Thank you for hosting and have a great day!
Hugs,
Denise
Denise, you may want to try one with a little sugar in it. I always buy the ones that all greens but they might not be to your liking. The ones in Whole Foods are so watery. They don’t compare to making your own!
This is something I really want to try! I had a juicer, but it was a pain to clean it, so I gave it away and yeah I didn’t like the amount of vegetable left in the machine.
Cristina, the cleanup is so easy on this one. I knew I wouldn’t use it regularly if it wasn’t.
Susan, you are such a healthy eater! I need to try some of this healthy juice. Thanks for the review and recipe, and thank you for hosting the linkup.
I admire anyone who makes these healthy drinks and your ingredients sound good~ I need to try this, thanks Susan! Thanks for the always great Monday party too
My kids have been after me to start making smoothies, so this review came at the right time. I’ve seen those on infomercials but who knew they were so powerful?! Thanks for the party too. 🙂
In March I bought I soup maker, my eldest daughter has one and loves it. So easy to make the soup in and in less than 25 minutes I have a lovely jug of soup. It also juices, but so far I haven’t juiced with it but that is on the try list. Like you I make up my own recipes, and I will do the same with the fruit/veg drinks. At least you know what has gone into them when you make your own.
I’m shocked to see how many people say they’ve never tried juicing! 😮 I thought every body did it. :/ In fact, I thought they’d be a plethora of ‘recipes’ to try.
As for the green, oh my goodness, that stuff is incredible! Seriously, don’t let the color put you off as it is absolutely delicious. I honestly believe my juices are better than candy! They are sweetly delicious, but only leave you feeling well and healthy. Give it a try!
Pam, that’s exactly how I feel. I can’t wait to drink it every morning…I love them!
🙂
Hi Susan – you know I have never once had a veg juice drink? I cook often and make and eat vegetables a lot (was a vegetarian for 30 years) but never tried it, I think I need to – because I know I am not getting enough of what’s good for me in my diet. Thanks for the inspiration! Also thanks for hosting – I actually am joining in the fun this time around. Yay. Have a great week. : – )
Thank you Susan for researching out the juices, want to try out juicing veggies but never thought of adding grapes which I love, so thanks for the tip. Will look for the nutri bullet at target. Glenice.
Hi Susan! I bought a NutriBullet after sticker shock from the other brand’s too! I have had mine for almost 18 months and still love it. Thanks so much for hosting your always wonderful party. Jane
As delicious as that looks, I’m of an age when I wonder about the…er…after effects of drinking such veggie-laden smoothies.
lol I was worried about that but my body seems to handle this much better than just a raw salad. I think it’s because it’s already ground up so finely that my body seems to process it a lot better.
Susan, not sure if you can tolerate dairy but Greek yogurt is fabulous in the drinks. I like to peel and mash bananas with a fork and then freeze them. I keep a bag of them in my freezer and add them to my smoothies. You’re right … they really add a whole new dimension to the flavor! I’ve also put a pinch of cinnamon in smoothies. Keep us posted on your flavor combination discoveries!
Good for you! I have always been good about eating lots of veggies, but not so good about eating much fruit. At the beginning of this new year, I started to incorporate more fruit into my diet and I feel better than before. Love the idea of juicing. Enjoy!
Big Texas Hugs,
Susan and Bentley
Your timing is perfect, Susan – my parents got me this same NutriBullet unit for Christmas since they love theirs, but mine is still in the box! They enjoy cooking but have recently replaced their daily lunches at home with a “Green Goddess” smoothie they make up with yogurt, kale, walnuts cinnamon, etc. I make smoothies regularly with plain Greek yogurt and fruit with my handblender, but need to make the transition to adding some healthy greens – and using my new NB machine, too! Your post is the extra push I needed to get it out of the box and start smoothie-ing with something green! Thanks!
That sounds soooo good! I need to try that recipe, Jill!
Hi Susan, we have been juicing for years, not as a meal replacement, but as an added health factor. We also eat lots of veg and fruit with our meal. I like the carrot and apple combination, also we add wheat germ to our juices.
Carry on with the good work, you do need vegetables in your diet.
Megan, I need to make a trip to the grocery store and wheat germ will be on the grocery list! Thanks!
I gave a Nutri Bullet to my son for Christmas. He has made some fantastic drinks in it. Most of his have fruit, kale and some yogurt in them and are like a smoothie. But they are yummy. I am going to try your recipe and add a little banana. Looks and sounds very good. Also wrote down the two recipes from Pam – crumpet cottage (Thanks, Pam!!) as they both sounded really good. Thanks for doing this juicing post. I hope you continue to enjoy and use your Bullet, Susan.
You’re welcome, Linda. 🙂 I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
Sounds delicious! I used to juice in my vita mixer. I have become lazy and now just grab some fruit ,veggies and eat them when watching TV. Try to eat an apple a day, celery, carrots, etc.
Thank you for the informative post, Susan! The only masticating we do around here is with the teeth, tee hee, I must get with the times! This sounds great, especially for my eldest son who adores Naked juice. It’s probably much less expensive this way, looking into it! Thank you for hosting!
We have a Nutri bullet and love it! The boys enjoy making smoothies with it.
Susan,
I love that you’re juicing now! I started in August making one green smoothie every morning with a variety of greens, plus a green apple, sometimes frozen mango, and carrots. I also add a little cayenne pepper and ginger for kick. Usually, I put in a half cup ice to get the frozen iced drink I love. This is the first year that I have not had a single cold; I attribute it to my daily greens!
Thanks for the smart post!
~CJ
Susan,
As always, I love your posts! You made the right choice with the Nutribullit. I love ours. It is so much healthier and less wasteful than juicing. They also make some wonderful cookbooks with recipes for drinks that treat various conditions. The only problem I have now is that my husband is diabetic so many fruits are out. Also, he had a quadruple by-pass and a heart valve replaced and can’t consume too many greens which can clog his new valve. Those problems severely limit our choices. Also, that company offers many seeds and protein powders to supplement your drinks. They are terrific and not costly. We utilize lots of nuts in ours as well. Good luck with your new purchase. I look forward to viewing any new recipes you come up with. I love cooking and baking, But I am NOT enthusiastic in the mornings. These drinks really help.
P.S. Please post a page letting us know if you have decided on locations for your Europe trip. I have lots more ideas and tips to send you, but most are location specific. My all time favorite is ITALY!!!!! Happy travels.
If I’m home, I usually try to have a smoothie for lunch which consists of greek yogurt, honey for sweetness, vanilla, milk or coconut milk, frozen overripe bananas and coconut flakes. I usually boil some tapioca pearls that I get from the asian market for texture and use a big straw to suck them up :).
Thanks for the party Susan!
Thanks, Susan. I have a juicer and I think it’s fun to use. Shove veggies in and watch the juice come out. But, I’ve always been concerned about the lack of fiber in the juice. The fiber is in the pulp that you throw away. And, the juicer is a bit of work to clean up. I LOVE your solution. I tried it out right away with what I had in my fridge and I loved it! Thank you so much for sharing this with all of us.
Thanks for all of the great information Susan. I’m like you in that I love juices but I want all of the fruit/veggie and not just parts, plus I want something easy. I may have to look into one of these. I usually freeze my very ripe bananas, in pieces, and add them in when I want a little bit of sweetness. Thanks so much for hosting.
I have a NutriBullet and I make a smoothie every morning, for protein I use pasteurized egg whites called Allwhites, Almond/Coconut milk, flax seed and a combination of fruits and vegetables. You do not even know the egg whites are in the smoothie and they are safe because of being pasteurized. I vary what fruits and veggies I use. The protein helps to keep me from looking for that cookie I often crave. LOL

I’ve been wanting to get one of these. FYI….grapes have the highest sugar content of any fruit. A bit of cinammon with some avacado, makes for smoothest drinks, you could just skip the grapes. I use, free range egg, protein whey powder, avacado, greens, cucs and fresh strawberries or blueberries, cinammon, and almond milk and ice.
I’ve had my Vitamix for years. Throw in a kiwi for a little sweetness. Some greek yogurt and a scoop of protein powder can go a long way. Buy the whey protein at a nutrition store or Trader joes (or even Costco). Someone else mentioned beets and ginger for ingredients. These are great for detoxing the liver. Just be forewarned about beets! Some people have beeturia. The beet juice is excreted in the urine. It looks identical to blood! Don’t freak out. Ditto for the other end! This may be TMI, but I had to go, like really go, an hour after having a beet smoothie. Um, lets just say I thought my colon was hemorrhaging! Again, certain people have the gene that lets the beet coloring squeeze through! haha. Good thing for Google or I would have gone straight to the doctor!
I own a centrifugal juicer and a masticating.. both were several hundred dollars (one was an xmas gift from my son and the other a gift from hubby after I went on and on how I wanted to start juicing after watching the documentary “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead”)
The problem was I got so sick of trying to think up ways of using the pulp which both systems produced tons of.
I started out with the centrifugal that my son bought me and there was lots of pulp… so I thought maybe masticating would be more efficient so my hubby bought me an Omega… still tons of pulp.
I made muffins and lots of other recipes trying to use all the good pulp….but over time I tired of taking the juicers apart and scrubbing each little piece after every use and I also tired of using the pulp before it would go bad.
I just wanted a nutricious drink… I didn’t want all the work!
Then one day several months ago I was visiting my son and he had a Nutribullet.. he asked if I’d like to try his new favorite energy smoothie… he tossed some celery, apple, cashews, kale.. etc.. etc.. into it.. *WHIRRRRRRR* and poured it into a cup for me… NO pulp.. NO waste… we drank everything that was placed in the container…. I WAS SOLD… lol.
Plus it was so easy to clean… no wire screens and little bits and pieces to wash… just a simple rinse with hot water.
I stopped at Walmart on my way home from his house and bought myself a Nutribullet… and I love it.
Now I whip up a smoothie for myself and hubby everyday and we both love having such an efficient way to get our daily requirements of veggies and fruits.
You made a smart choice Susan 🙂
I have a Vitamix, and this machine is a BEAST. It’s great for juicing but I like it best for incredibly smooth frozen margaritas. It also makes incredible smoothies, better than anything I’ve ever had at Jamba Juice. My favorite smoothie recipe: 12 large frozen strawberries, 1 ripe banana, 1 cup plain Greek yogurt and 1 cup Simply Orange orange juice. Combine all ingredients and blend on highest speed for about 45 seconds. If you like your smoothies sweeter, add a little Stevia or Sweet and Low sweetener. This is SO flavorful I bet you could throw in some kale leaves and you wouldn’t taste the difference. Of course, the color would look different. :0)
williams Sonoma just had their free techniques class on juicing….usually do it annually to showcase products. Go to their website for some good juicing recipes, and you should be able to stop by your local store for tips and recipes too. We saved up for a vitamix since it not only obliterates all traces of fiber pulp into your juice so you get the good stuff, but also will create heat for hot veggie soups in winter! And having the pulp in your juice seems to fill us up more, another bonus to juicing. Really nice in summer when too hot to eat heavy but still want nutrition.
Thanks for the juicing inspiration!
I’ve kind of been on fur-low from it all…
and well….you’ve now re-sparked my interest.
I do have a juicer but have only ever tried
making carrot juice with it…and your so right
about the excess waste just to get a bit of carrot
juice out of the juicing machine.
Think I’ll try your recipe in a bullet!
Thanks so much for sharing your insight
and your wonderful yummy looking pictures!!
I just bought a Nutri Blast, a cheaper version of yours.
I love beetroot, carrot, celery ,Apple & ginger.
It wasn’t a success, in fact it was awful, so the next time we put in less beetroot, thinking it was too fibrous, but it still wasn’t very nice.
Does anyone have any hints on what we might be doing wrong?
I hate all the waste with the centrifugal ones, it does my head in.
I was so happy when I got the bullet one, cos of no waste.
Thanks for your article on it.
Help!!
I am a very spoiled girl…my hubby makes me a protein/fruit shake every morning…We have a Vitamix and use it every day…..thanks for hosting Susan…have a most wonderful week!
That is wonderful, Shirley…now that is a thoughtful hubby! 🙂
This is a great recipe, and there are many more out there. Thanks for encouraging others into a healthier life style. I would like to point out that using a Nutri Bullet or Vitamix (which are excellent machines) gives a result that is not a true juice, more of a smoothie. This is fine and actually great if you are looking to add nutrition as well as fiber. However, if you are looking to “juice cleanse”, as Joe Cross did in “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead” a true juice devoid of fiber is important to that process as it allows your body to focus on cleansing and healing as opposed to digesting, for this purpose a masticating juicer is essential. For general health, the others are truly excellent! Keep up the encouragement!!!
Hi, Susan – I have a VitaMix and love it. My favorite smoothie contains either spinach or kale for the greens, pineapple, apple, green grapes, and about half a banana. I also add a couple of ice cubes and blend for about 45 seconds. The idea of adding protein powder is appealing and that addition would round out the smoothie to something more like a “meal”. The mangoes at Public and Whole Foods have been really delicious these last couple of weeks so I need to experiment with a mango smoothie. I always enjoy your posts – thanks!
Susan, I feel the same way about cooking. I love to feed a crowd but end up snacking or eating cereal way too much.
My husband bought a Vitamix and it is a beast but I never really took to juicing with it. It’s a bit clunky and I wasn’t crazy about the taste. I bought the Nutribullet after my daughter bought one and raved about it (the aqua one, I’m a sucker for aqua and turquoise colors) and bought a few things she suggested like chia seeds and superfood powder. They really pack the nutrition into a drink.
I don’t do fasts because of blood sugar drops and they wreak havoc on my body in general, but the juicing for nutrition’s sake really does wonders. Thanks for the recipe, I’m definitely going to give it a try!
Thanks, Sophie! I was wondering what kind of protein powder is good to buy. Any suggestions? The drink I’m having each morning is really filling but I know it would be even more so if I add protein powder to it. I’m going to also look for chia seeds and flax seed and some of the other ingredients folks have mentioned. I really love these veggie smoothies I’m making and I know I’m getting lots of nutrients I don’t normally get since I never eat vegetables like I should. So I’m really excited about this. Okay, I didn’t know they made the Nutribullet in aqua…I’m jealous! 🙂
The powders she had me get aren’t protein powders, the big one is the Pure Synergy Superfood. It sounds gross (it has everything from algae to wheat grass and everything in between). I noticed on the days I put it into a smoothie I seem to have more energy and I feel lighter if that makes sense…less bloated feeling.
The others are Pure Synergy Pure Radiance C (I have an autoimmune disease and this is a safe immune booster for me), Pure Synergy Barley Grass Juice Powder, and Chosen Foods Chia seeds (it’s a good sized pouch).
I bought everything from Amazon because they had the best prices plus I’m a Prime member so I get everything within a day or two.
I used to be a fan of supplements but so many did absolutely nothing and cost a fortune. I can really feel the difference with this mixture. It’s taken some getting used to, but adding a little bit of frozen berries covers up the taste of some of the gross yet healthy nutrients. 🙂
For protein powders, I’ve bought them online from Net Nutrition in the past. I go on low carb kicks every now and then and I find they have the best selection of high protein powders that actually taste good. My husband swears by whey protein from Wal-Mart, it comes in a huge container. I didn’t like the taste of it but a lot of people do.
You’ve motivated me to start getting back on track with the daily juicing, thank you!
Thanks, Sophie! Appreciate all this great info!
I too have one of those husbands that showed up at home with a vitamix. Apparently the demo at Costco was very persuasive . He has become the king of juicing and I am a grateful recipient of his creativity. I always like it when he throws in a section or two of lime – peel and all. It adds a really nice dimension to the drink.
Printed your smoothie recipe to try. I use Nutiva Hemp Protein Powder, I like that it doesn’t have the weird aftertaste that some other powders have.
Thank you for the link up. I love coming here! 🙂 Kimberley. seasideave.com
Can someone tell me which model of the NutriBullet they use ? I see 3 models… NutriBullet, NutriBullet Pro and NutriBullet Rx.
Mine is the least expensive one, the “Original” Nutribullet that is 600 watts…the first one on the left on this page: https://www.nutribullet.com/
Thanks, Susan ! Great timing. Checked the Costco website and it’s on sale ($12 off) through midnight. Ordered it.
Thanks for the recipe! It looks delicious and I will be trying it. Just a note to those who use a protein powder in their drinks, I talked to my pharmacist about it prior to purchasing and he said that it is mainly for body builders and that we regular folks should never use more than a tsp in our smoothies. He said that they crush it so hard to turn it into powder that it sometimes changes the molecular makeup of it which may not be good for us. Smoothies are drank for their pureness and being whole foods, the powder is actually a processed food. I only use it sparingly in my smoothies since he said that the fruits and veggies should give us all the protein we need. xox
Diane, that makes a lot of sense. I always feel a little funny adding anything into my veggie smoothies. Thanks for sharing what he said. I’ll use it sparingly and may not buy any more once I use it up. Most of us get plenty of protein in our diets, probably more than we ever need. It’s veggies and fruits we are usually lacking.
