Historic 1852 Ski Cabin, Restored & Updated

Welcome to the 228th Metamorphosis Monday!

Thank you so much for the loving comments you left on my weekend post and on Facebook. I’ve read each one and appreciate them more than you know.

Metamorphosis Monday:

Last September Cornelia shared pics of the restoration and renovation process they had started on their historic ski cabin located in the Swiss Alps in the Canton of Grison.  The cabin dates back to 1852 and was badly in need of restoration/renovation to make it a more comfortable for overnight stays.

During winter, the only way to reach the cabin is via skis due to the heavy snows. The cabin is a “ski-in, ski-out” cabin and is located just 500m from a ski lift.  In this “Before” pic taken last summer, the cabin looked like this.

Here’s another “Before” pic taken during the winter. Lots and lots of snow!

The restorations and updates began in Spring 2012 and they continued all summer until the heavy snow arrived. When we last saw the house in September of last year, it had been raised and a new foundation had been added underneath.  Cornelia said, “The original was made of stone and mainly wood, it did not have a proper foundation. There were only loose stones under a wooden floor which was rotten.”  You can read and see more about the addition of the new foundation in this previous post: Historic Swiss Ski Cabin Renovation and Restoration

Once the foundation was built, work began replacing the roof.

They worked quickly to get the new roof on before the winter snows arrived once more.

New siding and a new roof were installed just in time.

Now that spring has arrived, work has begun again.  Look at that view!

The workers have moved to the interior of the home.  The goal is to finish the restoration/renovation before winter returns again.

Here’s how this side of the cabin looked right after it was raised and given a new foundation.

As work continues this summer, I’ll post again with updates.  I can’t wait to see how the interior will look when completed!  Thanks to Cornelia for taking us along on this amazing restoration and renovation.

Metamorphosis Monday:

One on sidebar

If you are participating in Metamorphosis Monday you will need to link up the “permalink” to your MM post and not your general blog address. To get your permalink, click on your post name, then just copy and paste the address that shows up in the address bar at the top of your blog, into the “url” box for InLinkz.

In order to link up, you’ll need to include a link in your MM post back to the party so the other participants will have an opportunity to receive visits from your wonderful blog readers.

Please observe these few rules:

Only link up Before and After posts that are home, gardening, crafting, painting, sewing, cooking, DIY related.

Do not link up if you’re doing so to promote a website or product.

Do not link up a post that was just linked last week since a lot of readers will have already seen that post.

Do not type in ALL CAPS. It spreads the links waaaay out.

Let’s try something fun today! Please visit the person who linked before you and after you…that way everyone will get some visits.

Welcome! Thanks for coming to the party!

The scenery is just gorgeous, but I think I would like to see it in the summer months since I am so wimpy about cold weather. Thanks for sharing. You are in my thoughts. 🙂

  12. Wow Susan- Her cabin is coming along very nicely! What a fabulous view they have. It’s going to be quite a nice cabin when they’re done. The metal roof was an excellent choice. It will live on for a long long time. It will be fun to see her new kitchen and how she finishes out the interior!

  14. What an amazing transformation on the cabin! I can’t wait to see what they do with the inside.

Been thinking about you this weekend & wondering how you were getting along. {{HUGS}} I know it is quiet at your house & you still find yourself being careful where you step, in case Max was underfoot. I did it for a long, long time.

Thanks for hosting MM. I’m glad I had something to contribute today.
    fondly,
    Rett

  26. Oh, Susan,
I so hope you are doing well… I know it’s hard for you but I’m glad you are hosting today, too…
Susan, living in Germany, and going to Italy each year, I know Switzerland very well and it really is a beautiful country! I love it! I also love Cornelia’s cabin… we and the Swiss call it “Chalet”. (Stimmt’s, liebe Cornelia? 🙂 ) Susan, I wish you could visit Switzerland (and Germany and Italy, too! 🙂 ) during winter, someday! I know you don’t like the cold but believe me, when you drive through Swiss snowy mountains, looking at those light up chalets, you think you are in the middle of a giant Christmas village! So lovely and romantic… I’m sure you would love it, though the cold! 🙂
~Hugs to you, my friend… you are always in my thoughts and prayers… ♥ ~
    Cecilia

    • Cornelia says

      Dear Cecilia
This Type of cabin is called a Maiensäss, not Chalet. Chalet is a term used for wooden houses in the western parts of Switzerland and in the alpine regions of France. The farmers had his cows or goats in the Basement where he also made cheese and slept. The first floor was used to store hay. Maiensäss were only used during the summer time.

  27. Susan, thanks for hosting. I loved seeing the ski cabin. The view is outstanding and reminded me of the view from “Eagles Nest”.

    Helen

  28. Thanks for sharing..I love that they saved it instead replacing it…those logs are wonderful..I was wondering if they did anything with those beautiful boards from the outside of the cabin…..my mom gave me a great love of architecture…I had always hoped one day to restore an old place myself…think my time is running out…I’d have to hire out most of the work now…remodeled one of my smaller apt’s last winter…it was much fun…but tiling the tub surround taught me…yes Wende…you are getting too old for this…
I do hope your feeling somewhat better today….

  29. Thanks for hosting Susan! What a beautiful ski cabin. Thinking about you and your loss – hoping you are surrounded by hugs & love. Jane

  30. Hi Susan,
Thank you for the tour. Can not wait to see the inside! Take your time mourning Max. Maybe you could plant a small tree or bush to honor him, and sit by it when you are sad. A place you make for this special purpose. I have a concrete bench my Mother bought me for my birthday the year she passed away, it is on the path that leads to our pond. That bench is my place and means the world to me! You are in my prayers.
    Blessings,
    Shelly

  31. What a lovely cabin and an amazing view! Thinking about you…hugs…Debbie
