How The Solar Fountain Is Working & An Exciting Basement Update Coming Soon

Welcome to the 743rd Metamorphosis Monday! A few days ago I shared an addition I had purchased for the heated bird bath I keep out year around on my deck.

I had ordered a solar fountain for the bird bath. This bird bath see a lot of visitors throughout the day so I thought it would be something the birds would enjoy.

The solar fountain arrived yesterday and I pretty quickly realized my backyard is a bit too shady for it to work at its peak performance. It would shoot water up in spurts, pausing between each spurt/spray. I moved it to this section of the deck near the stairs where the deck sees a bit more sun.

Solar Fountain for Birds Birdbath, Needs Full Sunlight

As the sun traversed across the sky and its rays found little open spots in the tree canopy above my deck, the fountain came to life! Unfortunately, it didn’t last very long since I have so many trees in my backyard.

So I think what I’m going to do is place my other birdbath back where it normally stays and purchase another birdbath that I can place atop this little bistro table here on the deck that’s on the other side of the porch.

Spring Dining Outdoors

This end gets full sunshine throughout much of the day so the fountain should work well here.

Just wanted to share how the fountain was working. If you have a bird bath in a sunny area on your deck or in your yard, it works really well. (Solar fountain is available here: Solar Fountain for Bird Bath.)

Today, I have a representative coming out from the company who did my epoxy flooring here in the garage.

Granite Garage Flooring, Garage Makeover

When I did the garage makeover, I got a quote for doing the exact same flooring in this unfinished part of the basement. He’s coming out to look at the room again and to verify what we’ll be doing. So, hopefully, the flooring will get installed here sometime in the next few weeks.

Utility Room in Basement

Every time I come down here to retrieve something I have stored in this area, which is almost every day, I imagine how the flooring I have in the garage would look in this space. I can’t wait to see that flooring in this space because I have so enjoyed having it in the garage. I’ll keep you posted on that and share how it looks once it’s done.

Updates for unfinished basement

Not sure when I’ll get the flooring done here on the almost-finished side of the basement. I think that will have to wait until after I get at least one of my bathrooms renovated since it will be a more expensive update. I never use this side, so I guess that’s why I’m itching to get the floor done on the unfinished side since I’m in there almost daily. There will definitely be some big updates this year–looking forward to sharing all of those with you as they occur!

I wish you better luck than I with your solar fountain. I have bright sun everywhere and the water shot so high it kept emptying the birdbath regardless of the tube or spray head used. Finally took the tube and just letter bubble. That was nice but it only lasted two weeks before it died. I paid $35 for mine a bird seed shop right Hurricane Ian and only just recently was able to put it out. No refund, unfortunately.

    • This one is around $15. Another BNOTP reader said she had this one and it is still going strong. It has a 4.6-star rating, so hopefully it will live up to the reviews. Sorry you had such a bad experience with the one you had, Susan.

  2. Love the bird bath and fountain, Susan. My birds would go nutso for that. When it’s really hot there’s a line for bathing. Have a great week!

    • lol I can just imagine the birds lined up, waiting their turn. 🙂 My birds are so far not afraid of it. I had a Cardinal drinking today and a Phoebe took a bath yesterday with it bubbling away.

  3. Oh! Susan I can’t wait to see all the updates you do. That’s one think I miss out here in California- no basements. So much square footage we can’t have. Thanks for hosting us & have a great week. XO- MaryJo

    • I wonder why they don’t have basements in California…too close to the ocean maybe? Thanks, MaryJo! They are coming to install the floor in the unfinished side this Friday and Saturday. I can’t wait to see it finished! I hope to share it in a post next Monday.

  4. Hi Susan,

Your solar fountain is so cute! We have had one in our bird bath for a few years now, and we love it. The little screen on the fountain gets clogged periodically and has to be cleaned out, but it really is low maintenance. Once you get yours in the place with optimal sunlight, you’ll really enjoy it. We think the birds like it, too. 🙂 Thank you for hosting the link party today, Susan — hope you have a great week!

    Denise

    • Thanks for that tip, Denise…I’ll watch for that. So far, the birds seem to love it and it’s working better now, shooting up a nice height during parts of the day and bubbling the rest of the time. I think they like the movement of the water.

That fountain is cool and I am sure the birds will love it. Can’t wait to see your finished floor in the basement. I bet it will totally transform the room. I was wondering have you ever decided how you were going to transform your library/ office room across from the living room?

    • I would love to do that room but I really need to renovate my two upstairs bathrooms first. Thanks, Ann! I’m looking forward to getting the flooring done!

      • Ann Butler says

I completely understand. I can’t wait to see all the reno’s you complete this year and years to come, unless you pack up and move to your home in the woods first. LOL

  6. I, too, had bad luck with the solar fountain. We have bright sun everywhere and had the same problem. It then died.

    • I’ll try to remember to share how it’s doing toward the middle of summer. It’s doing better today, maybe because it’s a bit sunnier. The birds seem to love it.

  7. Nancy Thompson says

I had no luck with the solar fountain , my birds were afraid of it ! My sister had the same problem . Good luck !!

    • Really? So far, mine really like it. I’ve seen Cardinals and Bluebirds drinking from it and a Phoebe got inside and took a bath yesterday. He barely between the little things that stick out to keep it centered in the birdbath. I love seeing them splash around, it’s sooo cute! ♥

  8. Thanks so much for hosting this wonderful party each and every week!! I really appreciate the time and effort that goes into it! Thank You!! I hope you are having a great week!!
    Hugs,
    Deb

I have two of the same heated birdbath. Everybody comes to it…feral cats, raccoons, opossums, skunks, birds and who knows what else. I’ve bought several of those solar fountains and the birds avoid that birdbath. Like someone else said, my shot out too high emptying the water so I too took the stem off and let it bubble. The birds finally started using it then. I have a plug in waterfall I love but had to bring it inside my mesh tent because a raccoon kept pulling out the pump. I don’t know if it was playing in the water, washing it’s hands or what. I also had to move my hummingbird feeder because it would empty out overnight and I know hummers don’t drink after dark. It was a raccoon climbing the fence, tipping the bottle so it could drink it. Never had that problem before last summer. I put the feeder on a pole away from any fence or wall. It has a squirrel baffle so that helped. I bought a couple of trail cameras from Amazon and it’s amazing what goes on at night after you come in. That’s the only way I would know what was going on.

  10. Susan, what do you use to feed your geraniums? They are always SO lush and full of blooms!
    Martha

    • Thanks! I use Osmocote…a landscaper recommended it to me many years ago. I sprinkle a little in all my plants in the springtime and each time they get watered or it rains, they get fertilized. It lasts for about 3 months if I’m remembering correctly, so you don’t have to keep fertilizing them. You can see it here: https://www.homedepot.com/b/Osmocote/N-5yc1vZ4b4
      It’s also on Amazon.
