Inspiration Galore for Your Flea Market Finds

Flea Market Finds with Matthew Mead

Recently I received a copy of Flea Market Finds, compliments of Matthew Mead.  I had heard this issue would be coming out in April so I couldn’t wait to dig in and start reading.  It didn’t disappoint!

For this issue, Matthew teamed up with some great talent in the Blogosphere to create an issue filled with wonderful ideas for taking those everyday flea market and thrift store finds and turning them into one-of-a-kind treasures you can display or use in your home.

You get a real sense of who Matthew is in this issue and shhh, don’t tell anyone, but he’s a bit on the sentimental side.  You can feel the passion Matthew has for vintage pieces and they don’t need to have a high monetary value, either.  Matthew believes a piece has value if it has meaning for you. Maybe it brings back a cherished memory from your childhood or reminds you of a special time and place.

Matthew totally gets it!  He understands why our cars seem to have a mind of their own, making u-turns whenever they pass the thrift stores and vintage shops.  He’s out there with us hitting the flea markets and swap meets on the weekends.

Here’s a little sneak preview of what you’ll find inside this beautifully designed, drool-worthy issue. Remember those old globes and maps of yesteryear with their soft blue, green and yellow color schemes?  In this issue, you’ll find lots of unique ways to incorporate them into your summer entertaining.

I love the suggestion in Flea Market Finds of taking a map to the local paint store to get that perfect shade of blue you’re craving.  Didn’t this piece turn out beautifully!

Remember when I made this ice chiller with cranberries for Christmas, 2010 using an old tin as a mold?

Flea Market Finds with Matthew Meadshares how to create one with beautiful lilac blossoms for your summer gatherings with friends.  Since we don’t have lilacs here in the south, wouldn’t this be gorgeous with wisteria blossoms or rose petals?  Oh, the possibilities are endless!  I’m definitely making another one of these this summer.

It would be impossible to pick a favorite project or flea market transformation from all the wonderful projects featured, but this would definitely rank right up there in my top three.  You’ll find all the details on how to create this beautiful fern design for your vintage treasure inside Flea Market Finds.

  1. Love the repurposing of these great dressers. Wish I had more room in the house, or another house to keep playing. I would start by painting ferns on a drop-leaf desk. I just returned from Home Goods and found a doll like the Santos one you have in your office, and mine is holding a sweet bird. Meant to be mine. Thanks for your daily inspiring posts. Happy Spring. ~CJ

  2. Nice ideas! I love that chest with the ferns on it, those cupcakes are divine, too!!

  3. Looks like a perfect book! I like the ice with the lilacs–I can only imagine how sweet it would smell as the ice melts! I think you are right that wisteria and rose petals would be good too!

  4. The Country Nest says

I too love the fern chest and the wine chillers.

  5. I’m so glad I stumbled upon this! Definately look for his issues – is it a magazine or book? By the way, I don’t know where in the South you are, but I’m in Atlanta and I have a back yard full of lilacs! We can grow them here.

  6. Olive Cooper says

I read it last week and oddly enough enjoyed his Mid Century Modern work space. He has some cool pieces in there. Plus I remember a lot of them…wink.

  7. Nice review-can’t wait to read it!

  8. Hi Susan, What a good book. I like the ice moulds…they’re so pretty…and the chest of drawers is nice with the ferns on it. God Bless Barb from Australia

  9. Love that fern-filled desk/chest, and the cupcakes. As a matter of fact, I have GW on my errand list today! Hugs, GraceinAZ

  10. I’ve just bought a copy of his Holiday magazine from E Bay and can’t wait now for it to arrive. I’ll be buying a copy of Flea Market Finds as soon as I can, Sally xx

  11. He is certainly a master at his craft…he has such insight!…Love all the ideas!
