In The BNOTP Library: John Fowler, Prince of Decorators

Being a big fan of the work of designer, Mario Buatta, a few years ago I went in search of books about John Fowler. Mario has mentioned many times in interviews and books how greatly influenced he was by his work. He credits John Fowler with teaching him how to use color and how to arrange and use furnishings in a room.

3 Things I Like About This Book:

  • If you love English Country Design or love the work of Mario Buatta, you’ll enjoy this book. Of course it includes the famous “butter-yellow room” at Avery Row designed by Nancy Lancaster. John Lancaster was amazing! If he couldn’t find a fabric he envisioned or wanted for a room, he found someone who could produce his design for him. He had an amazing talent and a dedication to his designs and to his clients.
  • This is a great book for anyone working in the design field because it’s such an important part of the history of English Country style. A lot of the photos are of rooms that would feel outdated by today’s standards, but many are classic and will be forever in style. I loved seeing the evolution of Fowler’s designs.
  • I love books like this because even though the rooms are much grander than I have in my own home, I learn so much from just observing the way furniture is arranged and used in a room, the way the walls are decorated, the way paintings are hung…and so many other design choices. It really challenges you to think differently about how you decorate your own home. John Fowler and his firm were masters and this book really showcases their talent.

I never thought about Mario being influenced. He just always struck me as someone born with that naturally wonderful designers eye. But if he liked Fowler, I know I will too. Particularly the English Country House aspect. 🙂
